    Abstract [en]

The growth of cloud computing has enabled the provision of computer resources online and offers two essential characteristics, illusion of infinite supply and pay-per-use. Learning management systems are currently used extensively by the Swedish universities as learning tools. This brings better opportunities for distance courses and e-learning. To combine cloud computing with a learning management system is now possible and should therefore give the schools benefits. If the Learning management system is hosted as a cloud service by an external provider, so should the requirements be different.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether there are any incentives for rent a learning management system as a cloud service and also investigate if the requirements are different in a rented cloud service. A case study was conducted at Uppsala University and Dalarnas University, in order to compare a learning management system installed on their own server with a learning management system rented as a cloud service.

The result of the study proves that there are advantages to rent a learning management system as a cloud services. In terms to the requirements, there are no great differences. An important requirement when the learning management system is hosted by a supplier is that there is a good dialogue and that the organization relies on the supplier.

#MeToo: A case study of #sistabriefen2018Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

As a result of the #MeToo movement in Sweden, #sistabriefen was created to represent the women, non-binaries and trans-persons working within the communications industry. This study analyzes the dynamics and identities of the #sistabriefen group members on their private social media platform. The analysis incorporates The Logic of Connective Action by Bennett and Segerberg (2012), and two complementary Social Identity Perspectives; Social Identity Theory and Self-Categorization Theory (Hogg & Terry, 2001; Hogg & Reid, 2006). The study consisted of 23 interview participants, and a qualitative content analysis over the course of five months. This research assesses how members are motivated to participate in the #sistabriefen group, how they identify themselves within the group, and how the group features affect members’ involvement. The findings of the research indicated that digital social movements have the potential to effectively mobilize social change.

Low-Code Development Life Cycle: En beskrivning hur systemutvecklings-verksamheter hanterar Software Development Life Cycle-processer i low-code plattformar2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines how systems development operations manage the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) in a Low-Code Platform (LCP) and how these descriptions relate to today's SDLC standards. To investigate this, a case study for a specific LCP has been made. Semi-structured interviews have been carried out with the aim of investigating theSDLC managed in the investigated LCP. An analysis model based on ISO/IEC/IEEE12207:2017 has been used for a deductive thematic analysis. The analysis shows a great breadth regarding how system development operations can integrate an LCP into their IT infrastructure and work with it. The choice of strategy will control how the system development operation works with the SDLC for IT artifacts that are developed in theplatform. In order for the organization to be able to enjoy the benefits of the LCP, business processes need to be possible to model in the platform. Complex and extensive business rulesaffect the possibilities to model business logic through low-code in the platform. Addressing this through traditional code can increase the complexity of certain elements of the SDLC and the need for expertise, which can significantly increase resource requirements and the time required for the system development process.

Användbarhetsproblem i open source-projekt2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Usability is more prominent now than ever as the competitiveness of software market grows.Mesmerizing functions is not enough if the user doesn’t understand the interface. Open sourcesoftware, software with open source code developed for free modification and redistribution, isgenerally not up to par when it comes to usability. This paper describes which usability factorsis characterizing for usability problems in open source projects and how they relate to theoverall usability. This case study includes the analysis of interviews with main developers anda usability evaluation, based on ten key factors of usability in open source, of two open sourceprojects. It also includes which previous general issues considering usability in open sourcethat’s still an issue. The result of the study shows that usability issues in open source projectsis characterized by usability knowledge, usability testing and the capability of a software toenable the user to learn how to use it. These factors are related to the usability of the projectbased on the developer’ way of working with usability, previous experiences with handlingusability and the amount of user feedback for the project. The previous general usability issuesis still a part of the open source community except for the developers’ ability to communicatewith the end users.

    Abstract

Title: Communicators communication- A study on how Prime and Hero Kommunikation communicate on Facebook  (Kommunikatörernas kommunikation- En studie om hur Prime och Hero Kommunikation kommunicerar på Facebook)

    Tutor: Anne-Marie Morhed

    Period: Autumn 2015

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University

Aim: The aim of the thesis is to conduct a study on how the communication agencies Prime and Hero Kommunikation communicate on their Facebook profiles. Furthermore, how are these agencies presenting themselves and what are their purposes of being on the network?

Method/Material: The study is based on qualitative research where the methods of choice are netnografical observations and semi-structured interviews. The material collected and analyzed is Prime and Hero Kommunikation’s communication feed on their Facebook pages, and inteviews with people working at the bureaus.

Main results/Conclusions: The main result of this study is that the communication agencies are communicating differently from each other. Prime’s communication is characterized by a more serious tone where news reports are frequently being published. Furthermore, Prime is consciously associating themselves with important people and organisations. The study indicates that Prime is building their brand on Facebook through communication strategies.

Hero Kommunikation, on the other hand, is communicating a more easy-going image of themselves by publishing events where they often mention their customers. Hero Kommunikation opines that only events are suitable for Facebook communication. This indicates that they have a respect for the network.

Hero Kommunikation´s purpose is, unlike Prime’s, not to build their brand on the network. The main reason why the communication agencies’ communication differ from each other is due to the fact that they have different business ideas and different perspectives on social media.

Propagaming: Uncovering Propaganda In War Videogames2017Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis deals with the issue of propaganda in contemporary war themed videogames. Considering the current geopolitical situation on one hand, and the pervasiveness and widespread use of the videogame medium in general, and war videogames in particular, together with the collaboration between the military and the videogame industry, part of the wider military-entertainment complex, on the other hand, it cannot be excluded that military propaganda might be present in such digital media.

This study explores through which persuasive techniques is propaganda manifest in war-themed videogames. The answer is achieved using theories of rhetoric and persuasiveness in videogames and by conducting a textual game analysis of 10 different war-themed videogames.

A great number of persuasive techniques at work were found within the videogames, each of them working based on certain principles identified by previous literature. Through a limited set of options, players are exposed to the normalization of morally questionable acts such as civilian shooting and torture of enemy prisoners. The war videogames in question are not neutral in their playworld, mechanics, and playformance, and heavy and widespread use of propaganda can be found within them.

“Excuse me, I am still here”: Designing for the Wellbeing of People With Dementia2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

A growing number of studies have been addressing the use of technology in dementia care. As traditional views of society focus mostly on the symptomatic aspects of dementia, the use of technology is limited to people’s impairments. However, critical dementia aligned with the third wave of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) adopted a more holistic approach that goes beyond individual cognitive functions. In this paper, I will (1) present findings about the experience of practitioners and family members of people with dementia (PwD) in a long-term care residence in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; (2) Present and discuss digital design solutions for the well-being of PwD in the field of art therapy, Internet of Things (IoT), augmented technology and multisensory environment, and (3) Propose interaction qualities to solidify the epistemological shifts of HCI in the context of dementia care. The overall aim of this paper is to understand the psychological and social needs of PwD in the context of a long-term care institution and suggest a design approach that leads to digital artifacts that enhance engagement and social connectedness for the wellbeing of PwD.

Prioritering av icke-funktionella krav i praktiken: Ur ett agilt perspektiv2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Requirements management is an important part of the software development process. The success of a project may depend on how this is handled. Even though several research studies indicates that more attention should be paid on non-functional requirements, the primary focus in practical projects still regards identifying functional requirements. Especially the prioritization of the non-functional requirements has been proven to be of great importance for the success of a project.

This report investigates basics in agile requirements management involving opinions from experts from a software development company. This is done with help of existing literature and interviews with key actors involved in prioritization at the company. I investigate prioritization of non-functional requirements and possibilities for agile project development. The results contribute to developing an overall understanding of the agile way of working.

The methodology of this report follows a qualitative approach. It is based on secondary data from literature and documents, but also on data collected via interviews.

The results are acknowledging earlier findings from the literature and illustrate with examples actual prioritization of non-functional requirements, and how and why prioritization is a complex activity at a company. However, according to one of the most important findings of this study, the strict use of prioritization techniques is not the most urgent necessity for the success of a project.

Commencement of and Retention in Web-Based Interventions and Response to Prompts and Reminders: Longitudinal Observational Study Based on Two Randomized Controlled Trials2021In: Journal of Medical Internet Research, E-ISSN 1438-8871, Vol. 23, no 3, article id e24590Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Web-based interventions are effective for several psychological problems. However, recruitment, adherence, and missing data are challenges when evaluating these interventions. Objective: This study aimed to describe the use patterns during the commencement phase, possible retention patterns (continuation of data provision), and responses to prompts and reminders among participants in 2 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating web-based interventions. Methods: Data on use patterns logged in 2 RCTs aiming to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression among adult patients recently diagnosed with cancer (AdultCan RCT) and patients with a recent myocardial infarction (Heart RCT) were analyzed. The web-based intervention in the AdultCan trial consisted of unguided self-help and psychoeducation and that in the Heart trial consisted of therapist-supported cognitive behavioral therapy. In total, 2360 participants' use patterns at first log-in, including data collection at baseline (ie, commencement) and at 2 follow-ups, were analyzed. Both the intervention and comparison groups were analyzed. Results: At commencement, 70.85% (909/1283) and 86.82% (935/1077) of the participants in AdultCan and Heart RCTs, respectively, logged in and completed baseline data collection after receiving a welcome email with log-in credentials. The median duration of the first log-in was 44 minutes and 38 minutes in AdultCan and Heart RCTs, respectively. Slightly less than half of the participants' first log-ins were completed outside standard office hours. More than 80% (92/114 and 103/111) of the participants in both trials explored the intervention within 2 weeks of being randomized to the treatment group, with a median duration of 7 minutes and 47 minutes in AdultCan and Heart RCTs, respectively. There was a significant association between intervention exploration time during the first 2 weeks and retention in the Heart trial but not in the AdultCan trial. However, the control group was most likely to retain and provide complete follow-up data. Across the 3 time points of data collection explored in this study, the proportion of participants responding to all questionnaires within 1 week from the prompt, without a reminder, varied between 35.45% (413/1165) and 66.3% (112/169). After 2 reminders, up to 97.6% (165/169) of the participants responded. Conclusions: Most participants in both RCTs completed the baseline questionnaires within 1 week of receiving the welcome email. Approximately half of them answered questions at baseline data collection outside office hours, suggesting that the time flexibility inherent in web-based interventions contributes to commencement and use. In contrast to what was expected, the intervention groups generally had lower completion rates than the comparison groups. About half of the participants completed the questionnaires without a reminder, but thereafter, reminders contributed to both baseline and follow-up retention, suggesting they were effective. Strategies to increase commencement of and retention in eHealth interventions are important for the future development of effective interventions and relevant research.

    Abstract [en]

Title: The representation of gender: A semiotic study of Tom Ford's Gucci campaign 2003 and Frida Gianninis Gucci Campaign 2013.

Number of pages: 73 (79 including enclosures)

    Author: Sara Andréasson

Tutor: Anne-Marie Morhed Course: Media and Communication Studies D (2IV091) Period: VT 2013 University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Informatics and Media, Uppsala University.

Purpose/ Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the representation of gender in advertising that has both men and women as the primary audience. The aim of the study was to investigate how Gucci has chosen to represent men and women in their advertising campaigns 2003 and 2013.

Material/ Method: A semiotic analysis was performed by using three images from Gucci's spring/ summer campaign for Tom Ford in 2003, and three images from Gucci's spring/ summer campaign for Frida Giannini in 2013.

Main result: The results showed that there was a clear difference between Ford and Gianninis ways of representing women and men in the two advertising campaigns. The women in Fords campaign 2003 are presented as sexual objects and represented by the male pornographic imagination and portrayed as sexual eye-catchers while the men are portrayed as addicted to sex. Frida Gianninis advertising images is a contrast of Ford pornographic portrayal of women. Giannini presents women as confident individuals while the man is represented as feminized and androgynous in his appearance.

Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The communications changes, which come with technological development for organizations, have resulted in an increased complexity and decentralization that places greater demands on each individual employee. This notion has also changed how employees embrace, communicate and process the information that is given to them at work. In addition to the content of what is communicated, which should not only be preceded by relevance, higher demands are also directed at managers and individual department manager's own internal communication accomplishments. Internal communication is therefore a key factor for a company to qualify as a whole and single-hearted unit, which each employee needs to feel involved in.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and create an understanding of how to format and formulate the content that is communicated internally within organizations, in order to match the expectations and preferences of the study's target audience, Generation Y. The survey is based on a triangulation of qualitative semi-structured interviews with consultants on an internal communication agency, two of their clients, as well as a quantitative survey directed to generation Y and their general expectations of internal communication. Major themes and concepts regarding the study consisted of organizational culture, community spirit, formality and interaction within organizational cultures. In addition, the employee application highlighted as an artifact was also studied, based on communication and learning. The analysis of generation Y's preferences, based on Cook's 4K model, also supported the other themes in the study by deriving at the target group's preferences regarding the different types of social software.

Results from the study show that organizational culture is an extremely important factor, which represents the link between both knowledge sharing, engagement and learning. These soft factors should also be borne in mind regarding the design of employee applications, in the form of technical artifacts. However, these effects are also proven to be bidirectional, that is because a lot of focus is required from the managerial side of the company, highlighting the need for a more active and participatory leadership, which also affects the organizational culture greatly through a manager’s communicative skills. Lastly, the study shows that Generation Y prefers a relatively informal organizational culture, focused on individual performance but where problem solving in groups occurs. With regards to the content, generation Y seems to prefer that an employee application should be characterized by consisting elements such as exchange of experience, information about change and problem solving, which partly corresponds to the epistemological approach that the study has had to organizational cultures.

När två blir en: Nyckelpersoners strategiska användning av diskurser i media i internationella omorganiseringar2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Aim: To identify the ways in which key actors, in corporate cross-border mergers, make use of strategic discourse in printed media texts. Moreover, we sought to link these discourses to specific themes and issues in order to determine possible patterns.

Material and Method: We have made a quantitative (phase 1) and qualitative analysis (phases 2 & 3) of the media coverage of the merger between the companies Telia (Sweden) and Sonera (Finland) in 2002. The study was made through analyzing a number of articles in selected Swedish and Finnish printed media between January 2002 and December 2006. By studying certain themes and issues more closely the motive was to detect how key actors in the company use discursive strategizing methods to maneuver the presentation constructed in the media. The term discourse has in this study, essentially been defined as a framework in which key actors are able to draw on certain content specific perspectives and themes in order to deliver a certain point of view. Critical discourse analysis is therefore an important tool in order to identify the different messages within these discourses. In processing the results with critical discourse analysis, we have tried to explain how the key actors in the merger, have used these discourses to mobilize and highlight certain issues.

Main Results: Based on the results of our research, the issues that were given the most attention in the media coverage were ownership, corporate governance in the merged company as well as shutdowns. Our main conclusion was that different actors used different discourse strategies to mobilize these three issues. Subsequently, the results show that rational discourses were most frequently used. Thus, actors with operational responsibilities, within the merged company, maintained a consistency in keeping to rational discourses. This was true regardless of background and theme. In contrast, national discourses were primarily maintained by union representatives and by former members of the board or other former leaders within the company. These national discourses could primarily be linked to discussions about corporate governance and shutdowns. Finally, this study proves that the key actors within the new merged company used rational discourses consistently. Our conclusion of this is that it is the result of successful strategizing on how these issues were mobilized within the company.

Cold War Politics and Sports: Ice Hockey Competitions and the Image of the USSR in Western Mass Media2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The notion that politics and sport should not be mixed together have been a common notion throughout the 20th century. Nevertheless, the fact that sport is political has continuously been revealed and apparent, in particular during the period of the Cold War. During the Cold War, the Summit Series in 1972 and the Miracle on Ice in 1980 were two ice hockey events that characterised the confrontation between the Soviet Union and the West. However, rather than referring to the characterisation of the two events, it is of value to examine how the two sport events were reflected in Western mass media. Thus, this thesis, through the usage of mediatization theory in a critical discourse analysis of archival materials of Dagens Nyheter and New York Times, focuses on how international sport events outcomes of the Soviet Union, during the Cold War, were reflected in Western media. My thesis addresses this research question within the context of the Cold War led by the USA and the Soviet Union. Therefore, it is crucial to analyse this question within the intersection of national-and-international factors that condition this competition in all aspects, including in sports. It is demonstrated that the reflected image of the Soviet Union differed between the media outlets; moreover, it is illustrated that the coverage of the events was, to a certain extent, characterised and influenced by either political sentiments or countries political status, depending on the geographic location of the newspaper.

SVERIGE VET att The botten is nådd: En komparativ studie av prisbelönta svenska hiphopartisters  representation av droger och våld i musikvideos från två olika generationer.2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Given the controversial history of the music genre hiphop it is important to investigate how the genre is representing violence and drugs. Since the beginning of hiphop the content of the genre has been heavily criticised for its explicit references to drugs and violence. The controversial genre is growing in popularity and in modern Sweden the hiphop genre is topping  music charts.

This study aims to research the change in how acclaimed Swedish hiphop artists represent violence and drugs in their music videos, today versus 20 years ago. The study analyses four different award winning artists' music videos from two different time periods, using Stuart Hall's representation theory (1997) as its theoretical framework. Two of the chosen music videos are from the later half of this decade and the other two are from the early 2000s. The studied artists are Z.E, Einár, Petter and Timbuktu; their videos have been analysed by using the methodological semiotic approach, which utilises the denotative and connotative levels when analysing media content.

The result of the study shows that there is a change in how these acclaimed hiphop artist from these two generations represent drugs and violence in their videos. Especially it is shown that the modern era of acclaimed Swedish hiphop artist are connecting heavy drugs with success and social status. Simultaneously they use violence to build a threatening and powerful image of themselves. The older generation only represent lighter drugs which are portrayed in festive contexts and their negative consequences are presented. It should be noted that any violence portrayed in their videos is neutralised by the use of humor and levity.

Donald Trump på Twitter: en studie av konstruktionen av "vi" och "dom"2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines the content US President Donald Trump filled the terms "us" and "them" via his Twitter account during the last three weeks of the presidential election campaign in 2016. The analysis is motivated because it can give an indication of what kind of policy Trump will suggest as president.

The research question for this study is: With what content does Donald Trump, through his Twitter account, fill the signifiers "us" and "them"?

The essay is part of the research field of political communication and is based on a theoretical framework which places emphasis on the function language has as a tool for the construction of reality. Discourse analysis is used as method, which implicates that the meanings of "us" and "them" is interpreted on the basis of how the concepts are connected with other meaningful concepts and the context in which the tweets are produced.

According to the analysis of this paper, Donald Trump constructs an opposition between "us" and "them" based on religious affiliation and origin, in which "them" – who are Muslim or immigrants from Latin America – are the problem. Based on this constructed conflict, the political demands to stop immigration from Muslim countries and deport millions of immigrants from Latin America, appears as logical solutions. Solutions that has also been presented by Donald Trump. This type of policy proposals could lead to a further strengthening of the social divisiveness and an increase of xenophobia in USA.

Spelifiering inom rekryteringsprocesser: En kvalitativ fallstudie av det spelifierade rekryteringsverktyget Skyrise City2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Extreme Programming för två utvecklare: Problem vid implementering2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Health data sharing and privacy among older people using smartwatches2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Smartwatches can collect health data, location data and other sensitive information about users, and privacy concerns arise. This thesis aimed to investigate how older people (50-80 years old) in Sweden behave when it comes to privacy and health data. The data were analyzed according to the privacy paradox, which describes the discrepancy between how people behave and how they intend to behave in relation to risk and trust. The research approach was qualitative, and twelve semi-structured interviews were conducted. The interviews were coded and thematized following the chosen theory. Among the twelve participants in the study, a majority did not see, understand, or behave consciously towards the risks of sharing health data. Instead, trust was related to both the disclosure behavior and the intentional behavior among several of the participants in this study. This study indicates that for some of the participants, there are also other factors that determine their behavior, and the privacy paradox alone is not complete. Four of the findings when it comes to participants' behavior towards their health data and privacy were: trust-based decisions, lack of knowledge, low value of personal data, and value benefits more than privacy. Among several of the participants in this study, when trust towards an actor increase, the participant’s risk awareness decreases. It can be discussed whether the participants in the study value the opportunities more than the risks, and this impacts their behavior. Most of the participants think that sharing location data infringes more on their privacy than sharing health data, and self-education might be a reason the behavior and the level of privacy differ among the participants.

Hälsodata & smartklockor: En användarundersökning om medvetenhet och attityd2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Digital technology and the increasing digitalization that is constantly evolving worldwide means that structures in our society and our way of living are changing, when large amounts of data are being collected. Sweden is among the leading countries in the world when it comes to the use of new technology and every other swede has at least one connected device. Smartwatches have risen in popularity in recent years and provide many opportunities for the collection of health data, which for the users may lead to privacy problems. The purpose of this thesis is to research the attitudes of students (20-30 years old) using smartwatches based on the theory of the privacy paradox. The theory of the privacy paradox explores the relationship between the user’s behavioral intention based on the risks and their actual behavior based on trust. To fulfill the purpose the researchers conducted five qualitative interviews. The authors then analyzed the answers about how students relate to risk, trust, privacy and their awareness of sharing health data. It turned out that the students were optimistic about data sharing but the view of privacy differed. Risk was something that they said was taken into account but when the students actual decisions were made, such as downloading an application, the outcome was based on trust.

    Period: Autumn term 2010

University: Division of Media and Communication, Department of Information Science, Uppsala University

Purpose: Superiors and co-workers view on the internal communication is studied with the purpose to identify whether their opinions correspond with one another, and what differences and similarities there might be.

Method: This study is based on qualitative interviews with superiors and co-workers, and complements with the use of observations.

Main results: The results indicate that superiors and co-workers agree on several aspects of the communication, such as the fact that the organizational communication is disorderly and lack clear rules and guidelines. Superiors believe that the organization has a corresponding view on the internal communication, while co-workers are convinced this is not the case. This despite the fact that the results in the end show that both groups overall have very similar opinions on several of the elements in question. Another mutual opinion is that both groups wish to receive more information about current events and such. Communication strategies do hardly exist in the organization and there are no existing communication plans at all. When it comes to decision-making, the organization does not use any hierarchy or structure for the prosecution nor any processes for decision-making. On the other hand, co-workers believe that they are a part of the decision-making and that they always are encouraged to express their opinions, something superiors maintain is very important for the organization.

Kan en bättre prediktion uppnås genom en kategorispecifik modell?: Teknologiprojekt på Kickstarter och maskininlärning2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Crowdfunding is used to collect money via internet for potential projects through a large number of backers which contribute with small pledges. Kickstarter is one of the largest crowdfunding platforms today. Despite the big interest in crowdfunding a lot of launched campaigns fail to reach their goal and projects of the category technology shows the largest rate of failure on Kickstarter. Therefore, it is important to be able to predict which campaigns are likely to succeed or fail. This thesis aims to explore the possibility of reaching a higher accuracy when predicting the success of launched projects with machine learning with a smaller amount of category-specific data. The data consists om 192 548 launched projects on Kickstarter and has been collected through Kaggle.com. Two models of the type Random Forest has been developed where one model has been trained with general data over all projects and one model has been trained with category specific data over technology projects. The results show that the technology model show a higher accuracy rate with 68,37 % compared to the reference model with 68,00 %.

Effekter för sjukvårdspersonal efter införandet av Min journal via nätet i Uppsala län: En interpretativ studie2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Introduktion.

    Abstract [en]

Title: The transformation of news - an exploratory study of digital and analog news in the Swedish daily press.

Author: Annika Arnell and Sofia Amanuel

    Tutor: Lowe Hedman

Purpose: This explorative thesis attempts to study if new ways of news production and distribution created by recent digitalization processes and technical development has different impacts and effects when the same news events is published in the same daily newspaper in a digital as compared to an analog platform.

Method/Material: The method used is an explorative qualitative content analysis. The articles are divided into three levels: main news, middle-sized news and notes. The material consists of 40 news articles from two Swedish daily newspapers, with a divide of 20 news articles per newspaper.

Main results: This study demonstrates that there are differences in how a news article is formed in a digital as compared to an analog platform. The differences show that main news events are presented in the exact same way on both platforms. The smaller notes show vast differences in all categories and are often fuller on the digital platform, leaving information such as context and previous events out in the printed newspaper. The middle-sized news shows both similarities and differences. But the results are to varying to make any conclusive statement.

Russian Securitisation Framing of Ukraine Between February 2019 – February 20232023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The Russian-Ukrainian relationship is inherently complex. Since the end of the Cold War, there have been several defining moments in this relationship, which have contributed to how Russia perceives any potential challenges to its security. Securitising discourse from Russian political leadership, namely the President, offers an insight into what aspects of this relationship are escalated so extensively that extreme courses of action may be deemed necessary (i.e., a full-scale invasion of Ukraine). Drawing on Buzan et al. (1998), this project identifies the key sectors that Russia politicises, and those that it securitises vis-à-vis Ukraine. In addition, this study highlights the key sub-themes within politicisation and securitisation that were found within these sectors. This is all within a timeframe where relations have moved from comparatively stable to a time of war (February 2019 – February 2023). There is some degree of overlap between the themes politicised and securitised, especially across the military, political, societal, and economic sectors of security. There were no cases of securitisation within the environmental sector. Overall, this study found a significant shift in Russia’s securitisation framing of Ukraine from mid-2021 onwards.

Exploring User Trust in Natural Language Processing Systems: A Survey Study on ChatGPT Users2024Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

ChatGPT has become a popular technology among people and gained a considerable user base, because of its power to effectively generate responses to users requests. However, as ChatGPT’s popularity has grown and as other natural language processing systems (NLPs) are being developed and adopted, several concerns have been raised about the technology that could have implications on user trust. Because trust plays a central role in user willingness to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) systems and there is no consensus in research on what facilitates trust, it is important to conduct more research to identify the factors that affect user trust in artificial intelligence systems, especially modern technologies such as NLPs. The aim of the study was therefore to identify the factors that affect user trust in NLPs. The findings from the literature within trust and artificial intelligence indicated that there may exist a relationship between trust and transparency, explainability, accuracy, reliability, automation, augmentation, anthropomorphism and data privacy. These factors were quantitatively studied together in order to uncover what affects user trust in NLPs. The result from the study indicated that transparency, accuracy, reliability, automation, augmentation, anthropomorphism and data privacy all have a positive impact on user trust in NLPs, which both supported and opposed previous findings from literature.

An ecology of ideas permeating science, higher education, and society: Essays for Kerstin Sahlin2024Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This book is a dedication to Kerstin Sahlin, delving into the world of ideas and tracing their journey through the realms of science, higher education, and society. With collective efforts of Kerstin’s colleagues and friends, the book explores the multifaceted aspects of dominant ideas in science and higher education, unraveling their global trends and pro-found influences on universities and beyond. Structured into four comprehensive themes – critical remarks on global trends shaping universities and academic institutions; exploration of intricate relationships between the sciences and society; collegiality and governance of academic institutions; and the impact of global ideas in the public sector – the volume echoes Kerstin’s pioneering research on the translation, editing, and dissemination of popular ideas and management concepts. It also showcases her recent work on the ecology of ideas in science and higher education. This book stands as a testament to Kerstin’s enduring legacy, acknowledging her profound influence on our understanding of contemporary developments in society as well as in academia.

En kvalitativ studie om Volvos och BMWs reklamfilmer mellan 1990 och 20192020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine if and how the content and design of car commercials has changed the past three decades (1990 - 2019) and to examine if the intensified climate debate and concern for the climate changes has influenced what is communicated in the commercials. As theoretical framework a neo institutional theory was used. Nine commercials from Volvo and six commercials from BMW was analysed with a semiotic and rhetorical analysis to answer the following questions.

    1) What characterizes Volvo’s and BMW’s commercials in the 1990s, the 2000s and 2010s?

    2) Have the commercials changed during the past three decades? If yes, in what way have they      changed?

    3) Do the commercials in some way reflect the intensified climate debate and concern for the          climate changes? If yes, in what way?

The result indicates that Volvo's and BMW's commercials have changed from a focus on highlighting and conveying the car and its features, to a focus on arousing emotions of the consumer. No aspects of the intensified climate debate and concern for the climate changes was reflected.

In a constantly changing society, which over the years has led to new conditions and challenges for car companies regarding advertising production, it is important that companies adapt the communication in their advertising to the requirements and expectations of the environment in order to be more easily accepted by different stakeholders. The result should be seen as an initial step in the research area. Knowledge about how advertisement tend to change is important for all companies in the society since advertisement increases the company’s visibility and sales.

Pandemic Populism: A Mixed Narrative Analysis of Fria Tider's Tweets during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Infodemic2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

At the end of 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) receives information about a severe pneumonia outbreak in Wuhan city, Hubei Province in China. This event is the start of the worst global public health crisis in modern time, commonly known as the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. What is more, the situation turns into an infodemic as a massive wave of health-related information spreads worldwide, consisting of genuine facts mixed with conspiracy theories, dangerous hoaxes, and malign narratives, which risk not merely to endangering public health, but also to lower the trust in institutions, create polarization, and geopolitical instability.

This thesis explores the COVID-19 infodemic through the lens of pandemic populism and storytelling, using Sweden as a case. The overarching aim is to investigate COVID-19 related narratives produced by the Swedish countermedia outlet Fria Tider on Twitter. The theoretical framework builds upon news theory, narrative theory, and populism theory. A mixed methodology is applied, combining qualitative and quantitative narrative analysis. The data consists of in total 2,367 tweets, of which 256 tweets is the final sample size (n=256). The tweets are harvested through Vicinitas (www.vicinitas.io) and cover 2020-04-01 to 2020-06-30.

The findings show that Fria Tider tells an alarmistic story of a collapsing society, portraying Swedish institutions that handle the COVID-19 crisis as incompetent scapegoats while the crisis's noble heroes are SD and Russia along with journalists and nurses. When it comes to the Swedish people, most of the population are depicted either as internal enemies or helpless victims that are exposed to other persons` irresponsible behaviour, while only a few are enlightened. The conclusion is that Fria Tider conducts a smearing campaign that presumably aims to destabilize Sweden by undermining governmental trust and sow social tensions.

AI inom kreativa processer: Möjligheter och utmaningar2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Etiska problem vid användning av kontaktspårningsapplikationer: En kvalitativ litteraturstudie2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

During the outbreak of covid-19, contact tracing applications (CTA) were introduced as they have been proven to be an effective tool for contact tracing and thereby reduce the spread of infection. With Bluetooth signals, CTA can determine an individual’s positioning and which people they have been in contact with. This means that personal data about its users is collected, managed, and stored. CTA depends on a high level of acceptance and usage to function effectively. In previous research studies, attention is thus drawn to the fact that ethics linked to these applications need to be enlightened. Therefore, this study aims to shed light on the ethical problems associated with CTA. The study is designed as a literature review with a qualitative content analysis. The result consists of a compilation of the ethical problems linked to CTA based on the categories in the PAPA framework. The compilation shows that there are many ethical problems linked to CTA that need to be addressed and it also shows that it is largely the same ethical problems that arise and are relevant in IS today, as it has been in the field for decades since PAPA was created.

Hur gestaltas Black Lives Matter i svenska tidningar?: En gestaltningsanalys av Aftonbladet och Dagens Nyheters nyhetsrapportering, delvis baserad på tidigare forskning om hur amerikansk media gestaltat BLM-rörelsen2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this essay is to identify frames found in previous research on US media reporting on Black Lives Matter in two Swedish national newspapers, Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter. Other frames not found in US media were also identified. This analysis is essential as it is important to understand how societal challenges and problems are framed by the media, telling the public what the problem is and how it can be solved, shaping norms and opinions. A quantitative and qualitative content analysis is performed to answer the research questions;

    1) The frames in US media: anti-black, pro-white, stereotype and episodic, are they found in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter news articles during the period May 25th to June 25th?

    2) How are the frames solidarity, anti-racism, violent demonstrations and police brutality used in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter?

    3) Are there episodic and thematic frames in Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter during the period?

We make use of Shanto Iyengar’s theory on episodic and thematic, Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw's agenda-setting theory and Robert Entman's framing theory. The essay concludes that frames used in US media are not used at all or only used in a very limited number of articles. The result also shows that other frames, not previously used in US media, dominated the Swedish reporting. The last result shows that the episodic frame dominates the articles. Our hope is that this essay complements the current research area with a Swedish perspective on how the media frame the Black Lives Matter movement.

Multi-dimensional analysis of social multi-networks: Analysing a 5-layer social network case study2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Network theory analysis is applicable to many scientific disciplines (fields) such as biology, statistics and sociology. The social network analysis is one of the various branches of the broader network theory analysis, the social network analysis. It is of high interest among the researchers in social sciences. Social networks have had a significant impact on human civilizations for many centuries. During the last two decades, the main academic interest was addressed towards the research and analysis of a dynamically uprising sector of social networks, the on-line networks, primarily due to the domination of the Internet and technology over human attitudes and relations in modern societies. For many years, research was emphasized on the analysis of simple social networks, whilst during the last decade several researchers started working on the analysis of more complicated social networks, which consist by several smaller social networks.

There are important differences between mono and multi-dimensional network analysis. Mono-dimensional analysis provides the research with relevant knowledge. On the other hand, multi-dimensional analysis is still at initial stage. As a result, several potential models related to the multi-networks analysis cannot always provide reliable and adequate outcomes. However, due to the fact that different social networks can be easily combined and form more extended and complicated networks, it is of high importance for the researchers to advance the multi-dimensional analysis and provide more adequate analytical models.

The purpose of this thesis is to present the dynamic of the multi-dimensional analysis by consecutively applying both mono and multi-dimensional analysis on a social multi-network. The findings suggest that multi-dimensional analysis can add reliable knowledge on the social network analysis, but many problems that arose due the complexity of the multi-networks structures need to be addressed.

Inte så dum som den ser ut: Artificiell intelligens och användarvänlighet i interaktiva system2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study intends to research SVT’s work with dialogical and symmetrical two-way communication with their audience on the social media site Facebook. Because of SVT’s position as the government’s public broadcasting service, they inheret a certain responsibility towards the population of Sweden. With this study we aim to observe and analyze SVT’s communication on Facebook based on theories, interviews and their own policy regarding communication online. To be able to reach our goals with this study we are going to analyze the policy document as well as articles regarding social media use from SVT, interview communicators at SVT and also perform an analysis on one of SVT’s Facebook pages based on online observations. When analysing the content of the Facebook page we are using a synthesized definition of the theoretical frameworks and models regarding dialogue, two-way communication and deliberative democracy. Our results show that SVT’s own definition of dialogue differs from an academic definition of the very specific and complicated concept of dialogue. In our research we notice that SVT aims to market themselves and perform dialogue simultaneously, which becomes problematic due to the strict academic definitions of the dialogue-notion. The interaction between SVT and their stakeholders on Facebook mostly contain simple questions regarding the organisation’s broadcasting and range which does not provide the right conditions for dialogue.

Foreign agent law in practice2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the impact of the foreign agent's law in Russia from 2012 – February 2022. It reveals that the law on foreign agents significantly affects non-governmental organizations and individuals' possibility to operate through direct discrimination, reporting requirements, and lost funding. This was achieved using a theoretical framework and empirical case analysis. The empirical findings and content analysis are used to trace the impact of foreign agent legislation on organizations' activity.

Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Sustainability is a topic that is constantly on the agenda of today. Many countries today are makingadjustments to achieve the set climate goals within the UN, the EU and at a national level. GotlandGrönt Centrum is an regional actor on Gotland, which through its project "Increased food processing"aim to increase the sustainable development on the island. Gotland Grönt Centrum wants to increasethe dissemination of knowledge and the degree of innovation within Gotland’s food processingindustry by establishing a platform where players can meet. The research question for the essay istherefore focused on how the communication should be formulated to achieve the set goals in theGGC project. Through a qualitative study, this paper aims to answer the research question throughtheories of social network theory, sensemaking, structural holes, and more, in order to draw aconclusion. Through the coding of the empirical data, the analysis could show several aspects thatare vital for GGC to be able to conduct successful communication in order to achieve its goals. Theanswer was that by working with sensemaking to shape their message according to the target group, the commitment to the project can increase. This can lead to institutionalization and mutualunderstanding, which can lead to future collaboration between actors. The degree of innovation canalso increase if GGC assumes a role as a link and boundary spanner within the network to bridgestructural holes and thus bring in new information in the flow.

Consumer behaviour in Apple's App Store2011Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Mobile applications stores such as Apple’s App Store and Google’s Android Market revolutionized the distribution of applications for mobile devices. However, with thousands of application submissions, limited testing resources and the lack of an effective filtering mechanism, application stores suffer from information overload and a risk of releasing poor quality applications that could create confusion to consumers and may seriously affect the App store markets. Thus concern has been raised whether applications have been developed according to the need and interest of consumers. Therefore, the purpose of this study was mainly to identify and get insight into the main factors that mobile application consumer takes into consideration when purchasing mobile applications from the desktop iTunes App Store and the mobile App Store on the iOS devices: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

In this study both qualitative and quantitative case study approach was used. Accordingly twelve participants were selected from Stockholm and Uppsala area and their behaviour in the Apple’s App Store from the desktop iTunes and the mobile App Store on iOS devices was observed and recorded. Additionally questionnaires were administered to all participants in order to gather the necessary information.

Consumers on the App Store behave differently depending on the unit they are using. This is because applications on the App Store are presented differently in the desktop iTunes App Store and the mobile App Store on the iOS devices. The study shows that young consumers with lower income purchase apps more frequently than the consumers with higher income. It also shows that consumers often consider the description, the screenshots, and the ratings when they are interested in buying applications. Furthermore consumers take a look more on ratings in the list on the iPhone and iPad App Store because the ratings are not shown in the list on the iTunes App Store. Similarly consumers tend to read the customer reviews more on the iTunes and iPad App Store as the customer reviews on the iPhone App Store is displayed in another page. Consumers were found to be more attracted by visual elements that they are already familiarized with, apps with famous logos and known fonts and styles but also to coherent and descriptive app names and strong colors (i.e. red, green, yellow, black and blue, respectively). The majority of the participants found the iTunes App Store messy and cumbersome to use. They preferred using the iPad App Store because they found it to be a good mixture of both iTunes and iPhone App Store but also because it has more options to consider.

Although consumers behave differently depending on the unit they are using, the visual element of the apps, prior knowledge of consumers about the name of the apps, ratings, easy accessibility of screenshots and customer reviews of the apps were found to be the main factors to be considered by consumers when they visit app stores for purchase. Thus application developers and digital magazine publishers should consider these consumer behaviours in order to influence more downloads and successfully sell apps on the app stores.
