Inflytandet av ”irrelevanta” alternativ till resmål: En studie utifrån teorin om rationella val, antagandet om oberoendet av irrelevanta alternativoch prospektteorin.2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Intolerans - effekten av ekonomisk frihet och fraktionalisering2015Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Political Fragmentation and Changes in the Spending Composition2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper studies whether political fragmentation influence changes in the government budget composition during election years. Using data for Swedish municipalities between 1998 and 2014, different measures of fragmentation are used to analyze these effects. The results support the existence of such political budget cycles, but give no compelling evidence that these cycles are mainly driven by either less nor more fragmented governments. Furthermore, this paper analyzes if these cycles are rather driven by whether the incumbents won the previous election with a large respectively low margin as a proxy for electoral outcome uncertainty. Neither in this case, the results give any clear indication that these cycles are mostly driven by such factors.

Insynshandel: En sektoranalys på OMX Stockholm Small Cap2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This study examines if legal insider purchases earn abnormal returns on OMX Stockholm Small Cap during the period 2009-2011. A sector analysis is conducted on five sectors; Industrials, Consumer Services, Consumer Goods, Technology and Health Care. We also investigate whether outsiders can earn abnormal returns by mimicking insider trades. An event study is used and our main findings are that insiders on OMX Stockholm Small Cap gain significant abnormal returns. In the sector analysis we find that the majority of sectors also earn significant abnormal returns. The results indicate that an outsider can obtain abnormal returns by mimicking insider trades.

Kön och prioriteringar i kommunfullmäktige: En paneldatastudie över sambandet mellan andelen kvinnor i Sveriges kommunfullmäktige och kommunens kostnader för barnomsorg samt individ- och familjeomsorg2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Sell in May and go away - sanning eller påhitt?2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Food at All Costs?: Investigating attitudes towards genetically modified crops among small-scale farmers in western Kenya2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The international debate on genetically modified crops as a means of ending world hunger is characterised by the polemic between environmental organisations and the biotechnology industry. In African developing countries, the much-needed increase in agricultural productivity could potentially be reached through commercialisation of GMOs, but the findings of this study show that consumer acceptance among small-scale farmers in western Kenya is low. The farmers are not shown to have been influenced directly by NGO advocacy on a local level, but their attitudes are likely swayed by the negative climate of the national debate on GMOs in Kenya. The results also indicate that small-scale farmers do not support environmentalist attitudes, making NGO advocacy and European foreign aid policies potentially misguided in their attempts to promote organic farming principles.

The Economic Assimilation of Immigrants: A Study on the Economic Assimilation of Foreign-Born Immigrants Based on a Fixed Effects OLS Model and Panel Data of 28 OECD Countries Between 2004–20182023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

For several decades, the subject of immigrants and the integration of them has been a highly debated subject, both in politics and research. As the number of immigrants only seems to increase, the relevance of economic assimilation does aswell. The existing research within this field largely focuses on immigrants’ wage development while less attention is paid to their employment levels, implying that there are gaps in the literature. This thesis aims to contribute to filling the gap by examining how the role of governmental spending on labor market programs affects the employment rate amongst immigrants as a proxy for economic assimilation. This paper utilizes a panel data that observes 28 OECD member countries between the years 2004–2018. All the observations are obtained from the OECD Statistics database. The panel data is applied to a fixed effects linear Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model. While the hypothesis in this paper suggests that economic assimilation is promoted by increased LMP spending, the results indicated on the opposite; increased LMP spending seems to decrease immigrant employment rate by 2.4% and thus not promoting economic assimilation of immigrants. Though uncertain, this effect seems to weaken considering time lags.

Lending Relationships and Monetary Policy2009Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Financial intermediation and bank spreads are important elements in the analysis of business cycle transmission and monetary policy. We present a simple framework that introduces lending relationships, a relevant feature of financial intermediation that has been so far neglected in the monetary economics literature, into a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium model with staggered prices and cost channels. Our main findings are: (i) banking spreads move countercyclically generating amplified output responses, (ii) spread movements are important for monetary policy making even when a standard Taylor rule is employed (iii) modifying the policy rule to include a banking spread adjustment improves stabilization of shocks and increases welfare when compared to rules that only respond to output gap and inflation, and finally (iv) the presence of strong lending relationships in the banking sector can lead to indeterminacy of equilibrium forcing the central bank to react to spread movements.

Career interruption and subsequent earnings: a reexamination using Swedish data1996Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper reexamines the link between career interruptions and subsequent wages. Using a rich new Swedish dataset, we are able to disaggregate time out of work into several components. Regressing log wages on aggregate total time out leads to the standard result, i.e., a negative coefficient on time out. However, we find that different types of time out have different effects on wages and that these effects vary by gender. This casts doubt on the usual human capital depreciation interpretation that has been placed on the negative coefficient of total time out in the wage equation. We propose a simple signaling model as an alternative interpretation.

Ethnic Background and the Value of Self-Employment Experience: Evidence from a Randomized Field Experiment2021In: Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics, ISSN 0305-9049, E-ISSN 1468-0084, Vol. 83, no 6, p. 1287-1310Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We use a randomized field experiment in Sweden to investigate how self-employment experience is valued in the labour market. Our results show that self-employment experience negatively impacts the likelihood of receiving a positive response from employers. For male applicants, this holds regardless of ethnic background, and independently of whether we consider applicants with experience solely from self-employment, or applicants with combined experience from wage employment and self-employment. For female applicants, the results are less clear-cut. Our findings provide input into the discussion about the impact of self-employment on the chances for individuals with different ethnic background to obtain wage employment.

A natural economic experiment: An analysis of the macroeconomic consequenses of the Indian Ocean tsunami in Sri Lanka2006Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis we analyze the macroeconomic impact of the tsunami in 2004 on the Sri Lankan economy. The theoretical framework we use, the Australian model of a developing economy, gives direct or indirect predictions for the development of a number of variables after a natural disaster. In our case, we believe that the main reason for developments of the output variables and the exchange rate is the extraordinary large and rapid inflow of foreign aid money. In summary, we find the overall impact of the tsunami on the Sri Lankan economy to be minor.

Can endogenous monetary policy explain the deviations from UIP2002Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The co-movements of nominal exchange rates and short-term interest rates as the economy is hit by shocks is a potential source of ex post deviations from uncovered interest rate parity. This paper investigates whether an established model of endogenous monetary policy in an open economy is capable of explaning the exchange rate risk premium puzzle. Time series on interest differentials and exchange rate changes are generated from the Svensson (2000) model. Uncovered interest rate parity is tested on the simulated data and the b-coefficients are investigated. For most realistic choices of parameter values, the b-coefficients are positive but much smaller than the unity value expected from UIP. It is however also possible to obtain large, negative b-coefficients if the central bank is engaged in interest rate smoothing.

Monetary Policy and Swedish Unemployment Fluctuations2007Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

A widely spread belief among economists is that monetary policy has relatively short-lived effects on real variables such as unemployment. Previous studies indicate that monetary policy affects the output gap only at business cycle frequencies, but the effects on unemployment may well be more persistent in countries with highly regulated labor markets. We study the Swedish experience of unemployment and monetary policy. Using a structural VAR we find that around 30 percent of the fluctuations in unemployment are caused by shocks to monetary policy. The effects are also quite persistent. In the preferred model, almost 30 percent of the maximum effect of a shock still remains after ten years.

Cointegration And The Stabilizing Role Of Exchange Rates2006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

We show that empirical results concerning the behavior of áoating exchange rates di§er between otherwise identical cointegrated and non-cointegrated VAR models. In particular, virtually all ten-year movements in nominal exchange rates are due to fundamental supply and demand shocks when long run equilibrium relationships between the levels of the variables are included in the empirical speciÖcation. Another major di§erence between the models with the opposite im- plication for the shock creation versus shock absorption debate is that non-fundamental exchange rate shocks have much larger e§ects on output and ináation in the cointegrated models. Finally, impulse re- sponse functions in the Örst di§erence speciÖcation die out within a year whereas adjustment to long run equilibrium continues for up to ten years in the cointegrated models. Hence a correct speciÖcation of the long-run equilibrium dynamics of exchange rates is essential for capturing also short-run behavior of exchange rates.

Exchange Rates and Asymmetric Shocks in Small Open Economies2005Report (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

If floating exchange rates stabilize shocks rather than create shocks, a country that joins a monetary union or fixes its exchange rate looses a stabilizing mechanism. We use a first difference structural VAR on trade weighted macroeconomic data to study the role of floating ex- change rates for five "small open economies" with inflation targets. By including both domestic and foreign variables and using a combination of long and short-run restrictions, we identify asymmetric shocks more carefully than previous studies. Only in Sweden and Canada does the nominal exchange rate appreciate significantly in response to asym- metric demand shocks and depreciate to asymmetric supply shocks. Most exchange rate movements are caused by speculation and are not responses to fundamental shocks. However, these exchange rate shocks have negligible effects on output and inflation. Our findings indicate that exchange rates are neither stabilizing nor destabilizing but may be loosely characterized as disconnected from the rest of the economy.

    Abstract [en]

We study the stabilizing properties of exchange rates in five small open economies during to periods of floating exchange rates and inflation targeting. In the cases of Sweden and Canada, the nominal exchange rates behave in a stabilizing manner. Most exchange rate movements emanate from the exchange rate itself and are hence not responses to fundamental shocks. However, these non-fundamental shocks have only negligible effects on output and inflation. Our findings indicate that exchange rates display some stabilizing properties but can mainly be characterized as disconnected from the rest of the economy.

Exchange rates and long-term bonds2002Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Tentative evidence suggests that the empirical failure of uncovered interest parity (UIP) is confined to short-term interest rates. Tests of UIP for long-term interest rates are however hampered by various data problems. By focusing on short investments in long-term bonds, these data problems can be avoided. We study the relationship between the US dollar - Deutsch Mark exchange rate and German and American bond rates. The hypothesis that expected returns to investments in bonds denominated in the two currencies are equal cannot be rejected. This result is not simply due to low power as the ß-coefficients are close to unity. For the corresponding short-term interest rates, the typical finding of a large and significantly negative ß-coefficient is confirmed.

Can a time-varying equilibrium real interest rate explain the excess sensitivity puzzle?2006Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The strong response of long-term interest rates to macroeconomic shocks has typically been explained in terms of informational asymme- tries between the central bank and private agents. The standard mod- els assume that the equilibrium real interest rate is constant over time and independent of structural shocks. We incorporate time-variation in the equilibrium real interest rate as function of structural shocks to e.g. productivity and demand. This extended model implies that forward interest rates at long horizons move about 40 basis points as the short-term interest rate increases one percentage point. In terms of regressions of changes in long-term interest rates on changes in the short-term interest rate, including a time-varying equilibrium real in- terest rate explains about half of the puzzle.

Mixed logit estimation of the value of travel time1998Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we use mixed logit specifications to allow parameters to vary in the population when estimating the value of time for long-distance car travel. Our main conclusion is that the estimated value of time is very sensitive to how the model is specified: we find that it is significantly lower when the coefficients are assumed to be normally distributed in the population, as compared to the traditional case when they are treated as fixed. In our most richly parameterised model, we find a median value of time of 57 SEK per hour, with the major part of the mass of the value of time distribution closely centred around the median value. The corresponding figure when the parameters are treated as fixed is 89 SEK per hour. Furthermore, our finding that the ratio of coefficients in a mixed logit specification differ significantly from the ones in a traditional logit specification is contrary to the results obtained by Brownstone & Train (1996) and Train (1997). Whether the ratios will differ or not depends on the model and the data generating process at hand.

Hur påverkar inkomstchocker det colombianska inbördeskriget?: En replikationsstudie med heroinindustrin i fokus2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay examines the effects of oil prices on inflation in Germany during the twenty-first century. At this time, many important macroeconomic events have occurred and oil prices have fluctuated. Germany was chosen as it is a strong European economy dependent on energy imports. A multiple regression analysis based on the theory of the new Keynesian Phillips curve has been constructed. The results show that oil prices have a statistically significant effect on inflation; a 1% increase in oil prices results in an inflation increase of 0,011%. The result of this positive relationship is in accordance with the theory, but the effect is relatively small thus suggesting that oil prices are not the primary cause of inflation. Oil prices seem to have a more limited effect on inflation in the twenty-first century compared to earlier time periods.

    Abstract [en]

Can transparency interventions improve WASH service provision? We use a randomized experiment to evaluate the impacts of a transparency intervention, a deliberative multi-stakeholder workshop initiated with a community scorecard exercise, in schools in rural Bangladesh. To measure impacts, we combine survey data, direct observations, and administrative data. The intervention leads to moderate but consistent improvements in knowledge of WASH standards and practices, and institutions for WASH service management, but does not improve school WASH service provision or change WASH facility use patterns. Drawing on rich descriptive data, we suggest several reasons why the intervention we evaluate did not improve WASH service outcomes and propose ways to improve the design of future interventions.

Evaluation of the Swedish Trade Council’s Business Opportunity Projects2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 15 credits / 22,5 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of the Business Opportunity Projects (BOPs) that the Swedish Trade Council uses when promoting export for small enterprises. The Business Opportunity Projects have the same type of setup for all offices where the Swedish Trade Council is established and are subsidized by 60 percent from the government. A dataset on firms’ financial state on a ten year basis is used and survey interviews conducted in 2005/06 and 2007/08. From this data three types of methods are used; a calculations on expected values of return; a panel data model and a probit model. The results show that the expected return of one project is around 250 000 SEK and if the project is successful the average return is around 1 000 000 SEK. The governmental return is around 22 times the invested money. The probability of creating business volume directly or indirectly is around 45 percent. It is also shown that the projects have an impact on the export turnover of the participating firms. The effect comes after two years and it increases until four years after the BOP. The interpretation of the exact effect should be made with caution due to estimation issues. The result also indicates that the BOP generates around 1.5 employees on averages. The results show that the participating firms do not have advantage being larger, or being from the middle region of Sweden nor in a specific branch in order to have a successful project. Firms from north part of Sweden that have a slightly smaller chance of having a successful project, if the project is made in Western European offices, the firms have a higher probability to succeed compared to other offices.

Vad styr den etiska fondefterfrågan?: Om vilka faktorer som som påvekar den etiska fondförmögenheten.2009Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper examines what affects the demand for five Swedish ethical funds between the years 1997-2007. The purpose of this study is to examine if there is a relation between fund value and other values than just financial. This study examines if the number of conflicts in the world and the media’s coverage of the climate change debate could have an impact on the demand for ethical fund. A multiple linear regression shows that we don’t have a significant result from the examined variables except for household wealth. The regression results indicate that only household wealth is significant to explain the demand for ethical funds. It’s interesting to see that risk premium isn’t significant for the decision to invest in the ethical funds we studied. The study shows that statics inferens cannot be used to show these correlations for conflict and climate.

Påverkar föräldraförsäkringen negativt?: En studie om effekten av föräldraledighetens generositet på kvinnors sysselsättning och fertilitetsnivå2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Krona is getting increasingly much attention from economists and in the media. The Riksbank is monitoring its development closely and is prepared to act if it appreciates to a level which is too high. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the value of the Krona affects Swedish producers of goods. A static model is set up and shows that the effects depend on several factors. Most important seem to be the degree of international competition and how much materials and capital that is imported. A partial adjustment process is assumed to capture that labor and capital do not immediately adjust to optimal levels. Empirical results indicate that the exchange rate's effects differ substantially between industries. There exist considerable difficulties in measuring the effects empirically. One of the more robust results is that capital stocks seem to be positively affected by an appreciation.

UTBILDNINGSNIVÅER OCH ÅLDERSSTRUKTURER I SVERIGE: En jämförelse av utbildningsnivåer och åldersstrukturer i Sverige år 2011 och år 2040 samt uppskattningar av dess effekter på BNP per capita2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Förändrade bosättningslagen fördelningen av nyanlända i Sveriges kommuner?2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
