    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to describe parents' experiences of empty nest. The sample consisted of individuals who had experienced one child moving out of the parental home. Data were collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews and were analyzed by using thematic analysis. The thematic analysis revealed four themes, Concerns about the new time in life, Changing roles, Socializing in the family and Testing the relations. Due to the themes participants' stories reveal anxiety facing the time that will come when children takes the step to leave the nest. The experiences of the children moving out changed over time as well as the phases of the process to reach a new identity follows a progression. The relationship within the family is changing with new ways to communicate and socialize. This affects the parental relationship and leads to deeper relationship or in the direction of a separation. One conclusion is that mental preparation in the context and the time before moving out leads to positive experiences, which contributed to the relocation of a whole experienced as positive even if it starts with concern. Parents who discuss the new situation of life and prepare for changes improve the relationship.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine how social work professionals in child protection relate to situations of client related threats and violence, in the workplace, and also how they reason about the preventive work, in order to avoid threatening situations. In order to achieve the purpose, we used a qualitative approach, consisting of five individual interviews. In our semistructured interviews we looked for answers to the following questions: What knowledges about work-related measures did the social work professionals receive, on how to act when threats and violence arise in meetings with clients in the workplace? What strategies do the social work professionals use to avoid threatening or violent situations that can arise in meetings with their clients? We have, throughout our research process, been inspired by the hermeneutic method. The analysis was based upon Antonovskys KASAM (sense of coherence)-theory and theoretical concepts of mentalization, organizational culture and coping. The results show that only a few threatening situations occurred in the physical workplace of the five social work professionals. More common were threats expressed by phone and email. It appears that social workers have an awareness, preparing for meetings with clients to try to understand how the client will experience the meeting. All stresses the importance of responding to client with respect. The results also show that the interviewees believe that they receive good social support from colleagues and managers; they do, however, lack a broader perspective of education on how to act during threatening or violent situations. Majority of the interviewees felt that age and professional experience can be of importance in the interpretation of the situation. It is found by the interviewees that the work experience is something that affects what precautions they take in their private life, to private life should not be affected by one's choice of profession. They meant that these factors can affect the experience of threats and violence and how one interprets situations of violence and threats. The interviewees mentioned that they feel more confident in how to act when they need to diffuse a violent situation. They also meant that, as social work professionals working in child protection, you get a certain acceptance of the different kinds of situations your clients live through, the older you get.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the current study was to compare twins, nontwins and twins with other siblings regarding attachment styles and difficulties differentiation from others. A quantitative method was used, and data was gathered using a web-based survey. The sample consisted of twins and nontwins. Data was analyzed in a statistical analysis program using a six-way independent variance analysis. Results showed a significant difference between twins, nontwins and twins with other siblings regarding the attachment style subscale relationships as secondary. No significant differences were found between twins, nontwins and twins with other siblings regarding the subscales confidence, discomfort with closeness, need for approval or preoccupation with relationships, nor for difficulties with differentiation from others. This may indicate an insecure attachment pattern, which in turn could have a negative impact on interpersonal relations. Put together, this implies that more research is needed in order to implement relevant interventions including preventive methods.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate social needs and Facebook habits of young adults who work with service in the entertainment industry. Relationship between Facebook use and social needs to interact or express dominance were analyzed. Furthermore, it was analyzed whether social needs and Facebook use differ between women and men, privacy settings and the attitude to whether Facebook communication is equivalent to the communication eye to eye. An instrument, Social Needs and Facebook Use (SobFB), was constructed from which a questionnaire was created that was directed to employees in a company in the entertainment industry. 57 people, of which 28 women and 29 men, respectively, answered the questionnaire. From the questionnaire responses, composite variables were constructed in the form of indexes to describe the variation in Facebook habits and social needs. The result showed that the use of Facebook to search for information and to communicate was positively correlated. There were no significant links between Facebook habits and stated social needs. The women in the study generally spent more time on Facebook than men. Women felt more than men that Facebook communication is as valuable as communication eye to eye. Women also relied on Facebook to a greater extent than men. Those who spent a lot of time on Facebook often lacked privacy settings and expressed addiction to greater extent.

    Abstract [sv]

Measuring Adolescent Perceptions of the Physical School Environment: An analysis of the psychometric properties of a scale using Swedish adolescent data2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    (1) Background: Adolescents spend a considerable amount of their time in the school environment.  Most adolescents are also subjected to compulsory school attendance, implying that they have to deal with the environment on a daily basis. In health research adolescent perceptions about the school environment are often linked to mental and psychosomatic health. However, measurements seems to be focused on psychosocial or psychological aspects of the school environment more often than physical.

    (2) Aims: The purpose of the present study is to examine the psychometric properties of a scale of Adolescent Perceptions of the Physical School Environment by means of the Rasch model for ordered response categories.

    (3) Sample: The analysis is based on the survey Young in Värmland which is a paper-and-pencil based survey, conducted recurrently since 1988 targeting all adolescent in school year 9 residing the county of Värmland, Sweden. So far, more than 20,000 individuals have participated in the survey. In the analysis presented here, five items based on adolescents’ perceptions of the physical school environment were subjected to analysis using RUMM2030, in total about 22,000 individuals.

    (4) Methods: A scale consisting of five polytomous items is analysed by means of the polytomous Rasch model. General fit statistics as well as their graphical representations (ICC) are used to evaluate if the scale fit the Rasch model. A particular focus is also directed towards possible Differential Item Functioning (DIF) across sex.

    (5) Results: At a general level of analysis the scale subjected to analysis seems to fit the Rasch model fairly well, with good separation of the individuals, and showing no reversed item thresholds, i.e. the response categories work properly and as expected. Also, at a finer level of analysis focusing on DIF, the scale works fairly well, but with exceptions important in order to understand differences between boys and girls.

    (6) Conclusions: Although the scale fits the Rasch model fairly well, there is room for improvements. In particular the precision of measurement may be increased by improving the targeting through inclusion of additional items of appropriate severity.

Sample size and Chi-Squared test of fit: A comparison between a random sample approach and a Chi-Square value adjustment method using Swedish adolescent data2014Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    (1) Background: Significance tests are commonly sensitive to sample size, and Chi-Squared statistics is not an exception. Nevertheless, Chi-Squared statistics are commonly used for test of fit of measurement models. Thus, for analysts working with very large (or very small) sample sizes this may require particular attention. However, several different approaches to handle a large sample size in test of fit analysis have been developed. Thus, one strategy may be to adjust the fit statistic to correspond to an equivalent sample of different size. This strategy has been implemented in the RUMM2030 software. Another strategy may be to adopt a random sample approach.

    (2) Aims: The RUMM2030 Chi-Square value adjustment facility has been available for a long time, but still there seems to a lack of studies describing the empirical consequences of adjusting a sample to a smaller effective sample in the statistical analysis of fit. Alternatively a random sample approach could be adopted in order to handle the large sample size problem. The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare these two strategies as test of fit approximations, using Swedish adolescent data.

    (3) Sample:The analysis is based on the survey Young in Värmland which is a paper-and-pencil based survey conducted recurrently since 1988 targeting all adolescent in school year 9 residing the county of Värmland, Sweden. So far, more than 20,000 individuals have participated in the survey. In the analysis presented here, seven items based on the adolescents, experiences of the psychosocial school environment were subjected to analysis, in total 21,088 individuals.

    (4) Methods: For the purposes of this study, the original sample size was adjusted to several different effective samples using the RUMM2030 adjustment function, in the test of fit analysis. In addition, 10 random samples for each sample size were drawn from the original sample, and averaged Chi-Square values calculated. The Chi-Square values obtained using the two strategies were compared.

    (5) Results: Given the original sample of 21,088, adjusting to samples of 5,000 or larger, the RUMM2030 adjustment facility work as well as a random sample approach. In contrast, when adjusting to lower samples the adjustment function is less effective in approximating the Chi-Square value for an actual random sample of the relevant size. Hence, fit is exaggerated and misfit under estimated using the adjustment function. However, that is true for fitting but not for misfitting items.

    (6) Conclusion: Even though the inferences based on p-values may be the same despite big Chi-Square value differences between the two approaches, the danger of using fit statistics mechanically cannot be enough stressed.

The purpose was to examine if it is possible to decrease the non-response bias byimplementing Cialdinis principles of influence. As a part of a field-experiment, theparticipants were asked to take part in a survey. The way in which the survey was presentedto the participants were manipulated according to three of the above mentioned principles ofinfluence, one group for each principle, and one controlgroup without manipulation. Theprinciples that was used were “reciprocation”, “consistency” and “social proof”. The resultshowed that non of the manipulations used in the study increased the response rate, thoughone of the used manipulations lowered the response rate. The conclusion is that usingreciprocation as a principle of influence can give a lower response rate. This is hypothesizedto arouse from the fact that reciprocation is used a lot and the participants have learned thatby declining the initial gift they avoid the discomfort of declining the following request.

    Abstract

The purpose was to investigate whether a recovery perspective, viewed from a psychosocial approach is applied in municipal / private and county related care and rehabilitation. A recovery perspective means that the attending staff ensures that the clients are viewed as holistic individuals, where all aspects of life are considered to ensure adequate care and rehabilitation. A questionnaire was answered by staff in psychiatry, social psychiatry and addiction treatment from different areas of the municipal / private and county related sector.

The results show no difference in application of a recovery perspective between these two types of organizations. However, there is a slight tendency (non-significant) to lower-rated general individual competencies for municipal / private. There is also a strong tendency (non-significant) to a general difference between the aspects of the implemented recovery perspective, where the tendency is that the respondents as a whole estimate that the organization to a greater degree creates good conditions for a recovery perspective compared to the degree they are actually working on that basis. The results of the thematic analysis highlights that the county based organizations more widely create favorable conditions for the implementation of a recovery perspective, and that these organizations to a greater extent already has completed an implementation and apply a recovery perspective. It is concluded that there are no differences in application of recovery perspective between the investigated municipal / private and council based organizations, but that that there is a tendency for the county associated organization to better represent a recovery perspective.

Key words: recovery, rehabilitation, psychosocial, holistic, therapeutic, application, implementation.

Att möta klienter på fritiden: En kvalitativ studie om socialsekreterares upplevelser av att arbeta och leva i en liten kommun2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of choir singing. Despite the popularity of choir singing and its proven advantages, relatively few researchers have studied the extent of the supposed positive effects of choir singing on well-being. In a systematic review of research related to choir singing and well-being, it was found that many studies have taken place on a small scale and have been qualitative, with only a few large quantitative studies or well-designed experiments. The present study would contribute knowledge in the field by making a quasi-experimental study of the effects of choir singing regarding stress levels and energy, plus positive and negative emotions. The participants in the study were 20 choir singers from two different choirs, eight men and twelve women of mixed ages. Data was obtained through a psychometric test consisting of a self-assessment form, before and after choir practice. For statistical processing of the data, the statistical program SPSS was used. Calculations were made of descriptive statistics and dependent t-tests. In order to avoid mass significance, the results were presented based on p <0.0125 (0.05 / 4) a so-called Bonferroni correction. The results showed that choir singing decreased stress levels and increased energy levels and that positive emotions increased and negative emotions decreased. The result was significant. The conclusion was that choir singing increased well-being. It is probably no news for Sweden's 600,000 choir singers, but the conclusion could be important in other contexts, such as at school and at workplaces.

    Abstract [en]

Statistics from the National Board of Health and Welfare declares that on November 1, 2016, 384 people with drug addiction were receiving compulsory treatment in Sweden. Between the years of 2000 and 2009, 150 pregnancies and 8 presumed pregnancies which resulted in 94 children born of women receiving care under the LVM were documented. These children were born prematurely and had lower weight at birth compared to the rest of the population. In Sweden, there is no legal ways to grant a pregnant woman with substance abuse compulsory treatment for the protection of the unborn child. It is estimated that 1.6 children out of 1,000 are born with the most severe form of injuries due to the mother's alcohol intake, which is fetal alcohol syndrome. The purpose of this study is to by a qualitative approach examine how eight working social workers in Sweden experience their work with pregnant women with substance abuse and how they perceive the protection of an unborn child. The answers has then been analyzed on the basis of the theoretical concepts of power and scope, as well as Swedish laws, guidelines and the convention on the rights of the child. The result shows that all informants feel frustrated by not being able to take into account the child's wellbeing until after birth and that they think a change in Swedish law would have been beneficial for both the children and the pregnant women.

    Abstract

An experimental study has been conducted at Karlstad University. An independent measurement was carried out tests on 149 participants, of whom 75 men and 74 women participated. The study was designed primarily to examine how cognitive depletion affects behavior in decision making. Participants were randomly assigned to three different conditions. Each condition consisted of three different heuristics the first of which was Good-enough, meaning that the participant made a decision regarding a product that was good enough but not more than that. The second heuristic was specific, participants in this group were asked to find a specific product. The third heuristic was Take-the-best, the participants were asked to implement a product choice that they felt was the best product. After these elections have been held a strooptest on all participants, and then conduct two further decisions without heuristics and only with the guideline what they themselves might buy. The current study was able to demonstrate a significant difference between groups. The result suggests that the group that suffered the highest cognitive depletion and thus load was the group that took the longest time to implement a decision.

The What, Who, When, Where, and How of Idea Assessment.2016Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In contemporary innovation management literature there is limitedcomprehensive understanding regarding how different domains andfactors affect and bias early assessment of new product/service ideas. This paper aims at reviewing domains that previous research hasidentified affecting the evaluation of an idea and compiles them into aconceptual framework, and to test this framework among leading expertsand practitioners in the field of idea management. Empirical findings fromtwo workshops indicate that the identified domains in the framework areindeed relevant, but that additional aspect are highlighted and recognized by practitioners. We note that a proactive and deliberate approach to idea assessment needs to be carefully designed, attending to all factors in the presented framework in a comprehensive manner, while taking the organization's specific innovation needs and demands into account.

    Abstract [en]

This study is about the growing group of practitioners (so-called session givers) in complementary medicine and contemporary spirituality. The aim of the study is to explore whether such session givers perceive themselves as being in a working role, how they relate to this role, and their attitude towards clients, inside and outside their practice. The approach of the study is explorative and aims primarily at understanding the interviewees' experiences. To achieve this aim three questions are asked: (1) How do the interviewees relate to their professional and private roles respectively, and what role conflicts can occur between the two? (2) How are emotional aspects of the work described and how are emotions that arise during meetings with clients handled? and (3) What challenges and strategies do the interviewees describe regarding boundaries and setting limits towards clients? The method is qualitative and interviews have been conducted with five session givers. In the analysis social psychological theories of social interaction, roles and emotions are used.

The result shows variations in the view of roles, from work being a kind of calling to seeing it as a professional role. It also shows that the interviewees seek openness and authenticity in the meeting with clients and wish to minimize the discrepancy between what they display in their role as session givers and how they act in private. The result further shows that role conflicts and role confusion can occur when interviewees meet clients outside of their practice and that they, in some cases, experience challenges in maintaining personal boundaries. A conclusion from the analysis is that the interviewees are performing emotion work and are influenced by feeling rules and rules of expression and that they have developed individual strategies to deal with this.

Two Years)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is that from a Swedish availability sample investigate if the same individual may have criteria for the following personality types; high sensitive personality (HSP) and sensation-seeking personality (SSP) and any frequency of the combination. One purpose is to investigate whether there was a difference between the personality types perceived subjective well-being (SWB). The study also intend to investigate possible gender differences in relation to the perceived SWB. The method was quantitative and using web survey published by Facebook gathered responses from 121 respondents of which 91 women and 30 men of ages 18-76. Respondents submitted gender and age as well as anwsering the questions of the measuring instruments

Highly Sensitive Person Scale, Sensation Seeking Scale, The Satisfaction With Life Scale, PANAS - Positive Affect and Negative Affect Scale. The study showed that the same individual may exhibit the combination of the investigated personality types(HSP/SSP), which amounted to 15 persons of the study participants. There are significant differences between the distribution of personality categories and gender (χ2 = 23.771, df = 3, two-sided p = 0.00), women show greater HSP and HSP/SSP, and men show a higher frequency of SSP than women. Regarding the first purpose of the study there is no significant difference presence between the different groups of personality types in relation to the perceived SWB. There is no significant difference between men (30) and women’s (91) perceived SWB. Further research is recommended to clarify HSP/SSP personality types impact on patient well-being, and to increase knowledge of the likelihood of confusion between the HSP/SSP and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), and possibly also between HSP/SSP and ADHD. It is recommended that the participants in future studies are sought in environments that are believed to attract the relevant personalities, such as aesthetic activities, sports and adventure activities.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to compare if male and female students humor styles differ after controlling for life satisfaction. The humor styles that were compared comes from the Humor Styles Questionnaire and is split into two positive humor styles which are regarded as conducive to well-being and two negative humor styles that are considerate as deleterious to well-being. The two positive humor styles are ”Affiliative” and ”Self-enhancing” and the negative are ”Aggressive” and ”Self-defeating”. In order to analyse this an ANCOVA was used as statistical method, after the assumptions were tested the ”Affiliative” humor style didn’t meet the assumptions. Three ANCOVAs were done on the humor styles”Aggressive”, ”Self-defeating” and ”Self-enhancing. Main findings include more frequent use of aggressive humor style in men compared to women. But no significant difference between the genders regarding self-defeating or self-destructive humor style. The ANOVA analysis of the ”Affiliative” humor style showed no significant difference between the genders.

Att åldras med intellektuell funktionsnedsättning: yrkesverksammas syn på dubbel behovstillhörighet2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Title: In Sweden all women and girls are included in the human rightsnot just some. A qualitative study about different Swedish organization´s work with honour-related violence.

    Author: Therese Blomqvist

The aim of this study was to examine how different organizations in Sweden work with honour related violence, if they separate it from domestic violence, how their work can improve and if the work can improve by seeing the honour related violence as a cultural phenomenon. To answer these questions a qualitative method have been used through out interviews with four independent professionals who work with honour related violence in different organizations and associations in Sweden. The interviews were analyzed by using the concept gender perspective and cultural perspective. The result showed that most of the participants separate honour related violence from domestic violence and that they mostly regard honour related violence from a cultural perspective. Furthermore, the study has shown that it affects their work methods and that some of the improvements that is necessary within the field are about cultural aspects, such as a better integration and higher competence within the police force. Also changes on a structural level such as the same rules should apply for everyone so there are no specific rule that separetes men and women when they bathe, which is an example of the gender perspective.

Keywords: honour related violence, cultural perspective, gender perspective, work method, organization.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The municipal social services under the Social Services Act is responsible for the municipality’s citizens, but is at risk because of the situation in social services as social secretaries choose professions other than the exercise of authority. Social service work may be compromised on the basis that there will be a heavy workload for those social secretaries that stays when there are not enough resources. How social secretaries experience control in their work affects the way to trade and manage their work situation and the perceived control may be a discretion.

The purpose of this study was to investigate how social secretaries perceive their work situation. The study was conducted based on a qualitative method and consisted of interviews of five social secretaries that all work in the same municipality. It was revealed from the qualitative content analysis that the social secretary job situation may seem complicated and the social secretaries tend to ”end up trapped” on the basis o fits position between the organization and the client. The conclusion of the study show that social secretaries work situation is characterized by frustration, both from the client and from the social secretaries own frustration to feel limited in their role as street-level bureaucrat. The framework constituting the discretion consists of organizational and social factors that the social secretaries needed to relate to. The discretion was perceived limited but constituted mainly a security in the complex work.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to describe the experience of physical activity in the recovery from fatigue syndrome. The study was based on a qualitative method in the form of thematic analysis. The data collection consisted of ten semi-structured interviews where the criteria consisted of all participants having been diagnosed with fatigue syndrome established and as well had recovered from it. Which meant that the participants were no longer on sick leave because of the disease. And that the participants also had used physical activity as an aid in their recovery. From the thematic analysis, four themes emerged that describe the experience linked to physical activity in the recovery. Acceptance of the course of the disease and in the recovery describes how the participants experience an acceptance towards the disease and which progresses throughout the recovery process. Balance between rest and activity describes how the participants find an inner balance and as well experience an increased sense of balance and control when they begin physical activity. Physical activity motivates well-being describes the motivation the participants experience with the help of physical activity. The last theme, the meeting with healthcare and its impact describes the participants meeting with healthcare and the help and care they experienced from the discovery of the disease and during the recovery period. The results show that when the individual finds an acceptance of the situation, they are more susceptible to commencing their recovery and when they find a balance in their state, the motivation to contribute with their own capacity helps to help the body recover. In the end, it is the individual himself who is the strongest driving force, but the result nevertheless demonstrates that they are in a great need of functioning communication and work of motivation in the health care sector.

Flotation REST as a Stress Reduction Method: The Effects on Anxiety, Muscle Tension, and Performance2018In: JOURNAL OF CLINICAL SPORT PSYCHOLOGY, ISSN 1932-9261, Vol. 12, no 3, p. 333-346Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of flotation REST upon skilled and less skilled golfers' anxiety in terms of physiological indicators of stress, self-rated anxiety scores, muscle tension, and the effect on golf putting. Prior to performing the putting task participants underwent a treatment of flotation REST or a period of resting in an armchair. Participants completed both treatments in a randomized order with a two-week interval. The results showed that both flotation REST and the armchair treatment reduced systolic blood pressure and heart rate, with no differences between treatments or athlete skill levels. No significant differences between treatments were revealed regarding self-ratings, level of muscle tension or putting precision. The results indicate that flotation REST may be useful for reducing negative symptoms related to stress and anxiety in general; however, no support for direct positive effects on golf performance were found.

    Abstract [sv]

A systemic stigmatization of fat people2017Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this work was to develop knowledge about and awareness of fatness stigmatization from a systemic perspective. The stigmatization of fat people was located as a social problem in a second-order reality in which human fatness is observed and responded to, in turn providing it with negative meaning. Four separate studies of processes involved in this systemic stigmatization were performed.

In study I, the association between weight and psychological distress was investigated. When controlling for an age-gender variable, this association was almost erased, questioning the certainty by which a higher weight in general is approached as a medical issue. In study II, the focus was on stigma internalization where negative and positive responses combined were connected to fat individuals’ distress. We found that both responses seemed to have a larger impact on fat individuals, suggesting that the embodied stigma of being fat sensitizes them to responses in general. In study III, justifications of fatness stigmatization was explored by a content analysis of a reality TV weight-loss show. The analysis showed how explicit bullying of a fat partner could be justified by animating the thin Self as violated by the fat Other, thus downplaying the evils of the bullying act in favor of highlighting the ideological value of thinness.

The implications of these studies were related and seated in a context comprising a historical aversion toward the fat body, a declared obesity epidemic, a new public health ideology, a documented failure to reverse this obesity epidemic, and a market of weight-loss stakeholders who thrive on keeping the negative meanings of being fat alive.

The stigmatization of fat people was intelligible from a systemic perspective, where processes of structural ignorance, internalized self-discrimination, and applied prejudice reinforce each other to form a larger stigmatizing process. In paper IV, it was argued that viewing fatness stigmatization as oppression rather than misrecognition could hold transformative keys to social change.

Place-based methods for digitally enhanced experiences2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The fast pace of technical development within the tourism industry creates a gap between technology and the knowledge. While the technique tends to steer the development, the digitalization within the industry increases rapidly with lack of reflection of how different actors from the industry is included. The tourism industry has primarily concentrated on certain aspects of digitalization, such as marketing and e-commerce. The intention with this paper is therefore to fill an identified gap of knowledge about methods for enhancing visitors’ on site-experiences using digital media, where key actors in the local tourism industry and community are included. By launching the Geomedia approach within the research field in tourism studies, we are building a bridge between technology and people and connecting media with a place-based perspective. By using the so called Geomedia perspective, we focus on ‘who can communicate what at different places?’ What is represented at places and ‘whose’ places are represented (today and in the past)?

This paper focuses on an ongoing research project, where the purpose is to develop a method for site specific digital media productions. Taking our starting point in two specific tourist sites, one nature-based site and one cultural heritage site, we use the historical geography in a coordinated innovation process. We have been drawing on knowledge from various agents such as researchers, digital design developers, the public sector, tourism business and users (visitors / locals). The Geomedia perspective has thus inspired us in developing a place-based method, which will be discussed in this paper.

Hur uppfattar värmlänningarna Norge?2016In: Värmländska utmaningar: Politik Ekonomi Samhälle Kultur Media / [ed] P-O Norell & Lennart Nilsson, Karlstad: Karlstad University Press, 2016, p. 271-296Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

The Importance of the swedish-norweigan border citizens’ perspective for bottom-up cross-border planning strategies2019In: Norweigan Journal of Geography, ISSN 0029-1951, Vol. 73, no 2, p. 96-109Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

There is political interest in Sweden’s proximity to Norway, which is reflected in the regional policy focusing on developing business needs. As such, proximity at the regional level is simply expected to generate economic growth. The authors propose a holistic approach to spatial planning in a Swedish–Norwegian border region in place of the simplistic economic perspective. The aim of the article is to highlight the importance of adopting a bottom-up cross-border planning perspective that is based on the perceptions of the border region residents by showing that the proximity of Norway is important to communities in Värmland Province, on the border with Norway, in a different way from how regional authorities and policymakers perceive it. The authors used a qualitative method in their study. They found that residents were more interested in the individual, social, and cultural opportunities of the border, while authorities stressed traditional growth strategies. In conclusion, the authors recommend that policymakers should implement a bottom-up cross-border planning strategy (CBPS) in Värmland that includes the residents’ perspective, as a reinforcement of place-based policy approaches.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This essay deals with home care staff's perceptions of their jobs and the conditions prevailing. It is a qualitative study based on interviews with staff from the home care service in Karlstad.

The aim of this work was to qualitatively examine how home care staff perceive their profession under the circumstances. The interviews were conducted using an interview guide. The interviews were then analyzed and themes were created across important areas that have been prominent in the transcriptions.

The theories and concepts used in the study were developed and defined by Arlie Hochschild, Randall Collins and Rosmari Eliasson, who writes about the concept of caring rationality. Results used to represent earlier research come from research done by Eva Olsson, Anneli Stranz and Marta Szebehely.

After the analysis was carried out, we had a total of sex different themes with different topics under each theme. Under results we present the various themes developed and analyze them and compare the results with theory. The names of the themes are: Emotions, Lack of time and staff, Flexibility, Socialization, Relationships and Life outside work. Under each theme there are quotations from the interviews as examples of how the respondents expressed themselves. These examples also help to substantiate the results. Under each theme highlighted the different topics that are represented by the different names are discussed. Here we present various aspects of the profession that the staff thought was important to highlight. The study is based on their opinions and recurring topics are covered. Negative and positive aspects of the profession get highlighted.

In the results we concluded that emotions are an important and salient aspect staff in home care. The lack of staff and time can also affect the daily work. The relationship with colleagues is often like in a small community and they assist eachother and co-operate. The staff have contact with many people and have relationships with everyone they meet during the day.

Title: ”Respect the client and believe what is said” – A study of social worker’s treatment of clients who have been exposed to domestic violence.

Authors: Rebecka Broman Pettersson & Emelie Hammarström.

The purpose of this study has been to evaluate how social workers, both with and without expertise regarding clients who have been exposed to domestic violence, work in an aspect of client-treatment towards these clients. We have investigated the social workers knowledge about domestic violence and their investigation methods regarding these clients. The study has been implemented through four semi-structured interviews with social workers operating in different municipalities. The collected data has been processed through a hermeneutical approach and analyzed based on empowerment theory and theoretical concepts of violence and encounters. A result show that the client-treatment vary depending on the situation and that there are no clear guidelines or action plans regarding how the social workers should act. Also that the investigation methods very depending on where the social worker work and on the clients situation. The study also highlights the importance of expertise in the work regarding the client group and social workers awareness of violence and exposure to violence. There is a great need for expertise in social work in order to meet and work with clients who are victims of domestic violence. There is a lack of knowledge about this phenomenon that can lead to that the client is not receiving the necessary assistance, because the social worker did not know how to respond to the client.

Waiting management at the emergency department - a grounded theory study2013In: BMC Health Services Research, ISSN 1472-6963, E-ISSN 1472-6963, Vol. 13, no 95Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

    Background

An emergency department (ED) should offer timely care for acutely ill or injured persons that require the attention of specialized nurses and physicians. This study was aimed at exploring what is actually going on at an ED.

    Methods

Qualitative data was collected 2009 to 2011 at one Swedish ED (ED1) with 53.000 yearly visits serving a population of 251.000. Constant comparative analysis according to classic grounded theory was applied to both focus group interviews with ED1 staff, participant observation data, and literature data. Quantitative data from ED1 and two other Swedish EDs were later analyzed and compared with the qualitative data.

    Results

The main driver of the ED staff in this study was to reduce non-acceptable waiting. Signs of non-acceptable waiting are physical densification, contact seeking, and the emergence of critical situations. The staff reacts with frustration, shame, and eventually resignation when they cannot reduce non-acceptable waiting. Waiting management resolves the problems and is done either by reducing actual waiting time by increasing throughput of patient flow through structure pushing and shuffling around patients, or by changing the experience of waiting by calming patients and feinting maneuvers to cover up.

    Conclusion

To manage non-acceptable waiting is a driving force behind much of the staff behavior at an ED. Waiting management is done either by increasing throughput of patient flow or by changing the waiting experience.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the attitudes toward psychotropic medication as treatment on mental illness among nurse students. Through an electronic survey a quantitative data collection was made. The sample contained nurse students from four different universities in Sweden. The General Social Survey and complementary questions was used to measure attitudes toward psychiatric medications. The Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) was used to investigate if attitudes correlated with life satisfaction, thus preferences the individual has to life in general. Data was analyzed with Spearman correlation tests and Mann-Whitney U-tests. The result showed no significant correlation between life satisfaction and attitudes toward psychiatric medications. However the result did show a negative significant correlation between advantages and disadvantages with psychiatric medications. Thus were the participants more positive than negative towards psychotropic medication in general. The result showed no significant difference between the students whether they studied a 7,5 hp course in mental illness and attitudes towards psychiatric medications. The conclusion is that theoretical education within mental illness does not generate a more positive attitude toward psychotropic medication as treatment. To know someone who suffers from or have suffered from mental illness appears to be a variable that generates a more positive attitude. Furthermore life satisfaction does not correlate with attitudes toward psychotropic as treatment.

    Abstract [sv]

Mind over matter: Non-cognitive assessments for the selection of the Swedish voluntary soldier of peace2015Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis was firstly, to investigate if the current selection system mirrors the task of international deployment and voluntariness. Secondly, to investigate if and how non-cognitive assessments of personality and resilience, individual aspects that seem underrepresented in the current selection system, may increment validity to the current selection system. Since 2012 the Swedish Armed Forces is an All-volunteer Force where young men and women voluntarily can apply for a military service. In contrast to conscription, military service today includes compulsory international deployments with different demands on the personnel’s range of possible abilities and skills as well as selection process—yet the current selection system may not sufficiently correspond to the changes.

The thesis comprises four studies (Study I-IV) with relevant military samples, and aside from Study I, a validation of a short version personality questionnaire (PQ) being used in two of the subsequent studies, Study II-IV had a longitudinal design. Study II shows that the former selection system lacked prognostic value of soldiers’ performance during international deployment, and their ability to readjust at homecoming. Additionally, Study II shows that non-cognitive assessments can be used as predictors for readjustment. Study III indicates that international deployment does not need to be harmful for the psychological well-being and that good health seems to be a stable factor across time and situations. Thus, selection of “good health” and resilience may prove fruitful. Study IV suggests that high motivation to serve may have serious consequences for selection decisions and, in the long run, the recruits’ psychological well-being.

In sum, this thesis suggests that the current selection system needs adaption to the task of repeated international deployments and to the voluntary applicant pool, and that non-cognitive assessment may increment validity.
