    Abstract [en]

    This article looks into the history of Muslim community of Petrograd Leningrad during the Soviet time. The author pays special attention to its little-known and understudied aspects by referring to a wide range of sources from oral memoirs to diary extracts. Of particular importance are photographic materials from state and private photo archives. The picture helps to provide a broader view of the history of Muslim community, both from the standpoint of a photographer and through the eyes of believers themselves. Special focus is made on the life of the two imam-khatibs of the Leningrad Cathedral Mosque: Yakub Halekov and Hafiz Mahmutov. The author examines how official and unofficial leaders and institutions governing TatarMuslim community in Leningrad and a number of towns in the Leningrad region emerged and worked. Some photographs coming from private archives often serve as a starting point for a broader study of forms of Islam in the Soviet Union.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this paper is to work out criteria for selection of Russian conjunctions for the Swedish-Russian and Russian-Swedish dictionary Mini+ and to suggest a list of conjunctions to be included in it.

    The present study aims at collecting information, classifying it and examining Russian conjunctions in present-day Russian. The study also systemizes gathered material according to its diachronic features and makes corpus-based co-occurrence analysis, using Russian National Corpus (RNC) and Google Scholar.

    The paper presents a list of conjunctions to be included into the Russian part of the lexicon, based primarily on their grammatical and stylistic criteria as well as the results of the corpus-based frequency analysis. The choice takes into consideration limitations in size of the given dictionary. Out of a total 272 conjunctions, 55 were chosen for the Russian Swedish Mini+ dictionary. The major group (35) is simple conjunctions that frequently occur in corpus-based search and that are necessary to build basic grammar structures as well as other compound conjunctions, ex. а, даже, едва, если, чтобы, хотя.

    The second group (13) is compound conjunctions that are important for building most frequent subordinate clauses.

    The third group (7) is compound conjunctions that frequently occur in corpora.

    Revoljucija, vosstanie, perevorot: Semantics and Pragmatics

    The purpose of this paper is to clarify semantic differences between the words революция, восстание and переворот in present-day usage. Being members of the same semantic field, they nevertheless display some intuitively obvious disparate semantic features. However, these features are only partly attested in dictionaries. We study the meaning of the words революция, переворот and восстание in present-day Russian using typical contexts from the Russian National Corpus (RNC) and the Internet. Further, we identify distinctive features that should be included in the definitions of these words and compare our findings with descriptions of their meanings in several well-known dictionaries..

    The analysis of the present-day usage of the three words will demonstrate a number of semantic differences between these words that were not characteristic of their usage at the beginning of the the twentieth century. These semantic and pragmatic shifts are not, however, attested in dictionaries. It is therefore important, in the near future, to focus on diachronic shifts in the course of the last hundred years as well as on formulating new definitions that reflect the present-day usage of these words.

    Вариативное глагольное управление в русском языке первой трети XIX века: Variations in Russian Verbal Government 1800–18402002Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis focuses on Russian case syntax, more particularly on variable verbal government (rection) in the period 1800-1840. Variable rectional patterns in two major groups are examined: non-prepositional and prepositional rection. The period under examination coincides with the establishment of the literary norm.

    As the aim is to examine the usage of the spoken language among the educated classes in Nineteenth-Century Russia, an extensive body of material consisting of letters, diaries, memoirs and plays has been used.

    An important place is assigned to the historical background of the rection of the verbs examined. The reasons for variation between case forms are analysed and contrasted with the conclusions of nineteenth-century philologists. Various factors which influenced Russian verbal rection during this period, including the syntactic influence of French, are analysed. This has never been done before in a systematic way.

    Conclusions about the predominant as the more infrequent rectional patterns are supported by statistics on the incidence of all the various rectional patterns.

    The study shows that:

    - the majority of verbs during this period had modern rectional patterns;

    - the obvious cases of variation were exhibited in the period 1800-1820;

    - the exhibited variation was in most cases inherited from earlier epochs.

    Cheruvimskie pesnopenija v russkoj liturgičeskoj tradicii2004Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This thesis is a contribution to a growing field of studies on the reception of Byzantine culture in Russia. The object of investigation is the history of the Church Slavonic translation of the Cherubika, which constitute one of the most ancient and dogmatically important functional genres of Byzantine liturgical hymns. The chronological frame of this study is the 13th–17th century. Particular attention is focused on the last change in the liturgical texts in Muscovite Russia, in the mid-17th century. This liturgical reform, which led to the famous Schism in the Russian Church, is studied as part of the cultural reforms started by Tsar Alexis Romanov (1645-1676).

    The most characteristic feature of Orthodoxy is the principal unity of Scripture and Tradition, which in a hermeneutical perspective means the inseparability of text and context. The semiotic and interdisciplinary approach used in this study reflects this principle. The Slavic Cherubika are interpreted in a broad cultural perspective, and Church Slavonic translations are studied in the proper theological, rhetorical and linguistic contexts.

    Although the 17th-century translations made in Moscow were based on late Greek and South Slavic sources, they reconstruct the original dogmatic message of the Byzantine Cherubika and are hence closer to the Tradition than earlier Slavonic translations.

    This study offers a new interpretation of the nature of the Schism. It is shown that the main cause of the controversy between Reformists and Old Believers lies in their different understandings of the connection between Text and Ritual. The traditional medieval interpretation of the Cherubika is influenced by certain iconographical themes, other liturgical texts and the priest’s actions during the liturgy. The transition from a liturgocentric interpretation of sacral texts to a descriptive theological interpretation was a break from the characteristic Russian form of liturgocentrism and the beginning of a new cultural era.

    Abstract [en]

    This article focuses on the question of transformation of the Orthodox tradition in the postmodern context. The apophatic theology and the institute of Holy Fools (jurodstvo) are the most hermeneutic and mystical parts of Byzantine and Russian Orthodox cultures. These practices are now detached from their original sacral context and are used as rhetorical devices. The process and the results of such transgression are studied on the examples from the works of Dmitry Prigov and Vladimir Sorokin. In this article I concentrate on three rhetorical figures that are used by these authors: logogriph, amplification and ostranenie.

    Abstract [ru]

    Повесть Аркадия и Бориса Стругацких «Малыш» (1970 г.) нередко рассматриваетсяисследователями как образец поворота этих авторов от научной к социальнойфантастике, с ее интересом к вопросам личной и социальной этики, проблематикедегуманизации, колонизации и «приручения», к понятию «настоящий человек». Наматериале фильма «Неназначенные встречи» (Чехия, 1994 г.) - экранизации повести«Малыш» - в докладе будет рассмотрены стратегии репрезентации дистопиитрансгуманизма как победы технологической рациональности. Особое внимание будетуделено сравнению повести и фильма по следующим аспектам: визуализация планетыАрхе как места «бывшей жизни», дихотомия дикарь/постчеловек в образе Малыша, плавающая идентичность и «шизоидность» главных героев как необходимыепредпосылки установления контакта.
