Modelling of the Ward Round Process in a Healthcare Unit2011Ingår i: The Practice of Enterprise Modeling: 4th IFIP WG 8.1 Working Conference, PoEM 2011 Oslo, Norway, November 2-3, 2011 Proceedings / [ed] Paul Johannesson, John Krogstie and Andreas L. Opdahl, Springer Berlin/Heidelberg, 2011, Vol. 92, 223-237 s.Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Information systems (IS) are nowadays extensively used to support all kinds of activities in healthcare organisations. Enterprise modelling can help to make the use of IS in healthcare more effective by providing process and domain models reflecting a particular healthcare unit. This paper proposes a model of the ward round process in a healthcare unit. The proposed model identifies the roles of medical professionals, tasks that can be performed according to the personnel’s competences, and activities that are carried out as part of the tasks to achieve goals of the ward round process. A formal approach has been used to implement the modelling results in the form of an ontology. Such formal ontologies can support improvement and development of IS in healthcare. We learned that modelling workshops are important for development of models that can be formalized in a machine-readable form.

Bridging the Semantic Gap between Sensor Data and Ontological Knowledge2015Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The rapid growth of sensor data can potentially enable a better awareness of the environment for humans. In this regard, interpretation of data needs to be human-understandable. For this, data interpretation may include semantic annotations that hold the meaning of numeric data. This thesis is about bridging the gap between quantitative data and qualitative knowledge to enrich the interpretation of data. There are a number of challenges which make the automation of the interpretation process non-trivial. Challenges include the complexity of sensor data, the amount of available structured knowledge and the inherent uncertainty in data. Under the premise that high level knowledge is contained in ontologies, this thesis investigates the use of current techniques in ontological knowledge representation and reasoning to confront these challenges. Our research is divided into three phases, where the focus of the first phase is on the interpretation of data for domains which are semantically poor in terms of available structured knowledge. During the second phase, we studied publicly available ontological knowledge for the task of annotating multivariate data. Our contribution in this phase is about applying a diagnostic reasoning algorithm to available ontologies. Our studies during the last phase have been focused on the design and development of a domain-independent ontological representation model equipped with a non-monotonic reasoning approach with the purpose of annotating time-series data. Our last contribution is related to coupling the OWL-DL ontology with a non-monotonic reasoner. The experimental platforms used for validation consist of a network of sensors which include gas sensors whose generated data is complex. A secondary data set includes time series medical signals representing physiological data, as well as a number of publicly available ontologies such as NCBO Bioportal repository.

Facilitation matters: A framework for instructor-led serious gaming2014Doktorsavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

Characteristics of Finnish and Swedish intensive care nursing narratives: a comparative analysis to support the development of clinical language technologies2011Ingår i: Journal of Biomedical Semantics, ISSN 2041-1480, Vol. 2, nr S1, 1-11 s.Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Free text is helpful for entering information into electronic health records, but reusing it is a challenge. The need for language technology for processing Finnish and Swedish healthcare text is therefore evident; however, Finnish and Swedish are linguistically very dissimilar. In this paper we present a comparison of characteristics in Finnish and Swedish free-text nursing narratives from intensive care. This creates a framework for characterising and comparing clinical text and lays the groundwork for developing clinical language technologies. Methods: Our material included daily nursing narratives from one intensive care unit in Finland and one in Sweden. Inclusion criteria for patients were an inpatient period of least five days and an age of at least 16 years. We performed a comparative analysis as part of a collaborative effort between Finnish- and Swedish-speaking healthcare and language technology professionals that included both qualitative and quantitative aspects. The qualitative analysis addressed the content and structure of three average- sized health records from each country. In the quantitative analysis 514 Finnish and 379 Swedish health records were studied using various language technology tools. Results: Although the two languages are not closely related, nursing narratives in Finland and Sweden had many properties in common. Both made use of specialised jargon and their content was very similar. However, many of these characteristics were challenging regarding development of language technology to support producing and using clinical documentation. Conclusions: The way Finnish and Swedish intensive care nursing was documented, was not country or language dependent, but shared a common context, principles and structural features and even similar vocabulary elements. Technology solutions are therefore likely to be applicable to a wider range of natural languages, but they need linguistic tailoring. Work on Spoken (Multimodal) Language Corpora in South Africa2010Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper describes past, ongoing and planned work on the collection and transcription of spoken language samples for all the South African official languages and as part of this the training of researchers in corpus linguistic research skills. More specifically the work has involved (and still involves) establishing an international corpus linguistic network linked to a network hub at a UNISA website and the development of research tools, a corpus research guide and workbook for multimodal communication and spoken language corpus research. As an example of the work we are doing and hope to do more of in the future, we present a small pilot study of the influence of English and Afrikaans on the 100 most frequent words in spoken Xhosa as this is evidenced in the corpus of spoken interaction we have gathered so far. Other planned work, besides work on spoken language phenomena, involves comparison of spoken and written language and work on communicative body movements (gestures) and their relation to speech.

Hesitation in Intercultural Communication: Some Observations and Analyses on Interpreting Shoulder Shrugging2010Ingår i: Computing and Communication: Lecture Notes in Computer Science, (LNCS) / [ed] T. Ishida, Springer , 2010, 55-70 s.Kapitel i bok, del av antologi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This paper concerns the different ways in which hesitation, and hesitation related phenomena like uncertainty, doubt and other phenomena where lack of knowledge is involved are expressed in different cultures. The paper focuses especially on shoulder shrugging as a signal of hesitation or uncertainty, and starts from the observation that shoulder shrugging has different interpretations depending on the interlocutor’s cultural background. It is not commonly used in Eastern cultures while in Western cultures it is a sign of uncertainty and ignorance. The paper reports a small study on the differences in interpretation of a particular video tape gesture, and draws some preliminary conclusions of how this affects intercultural communication between human interlocutors and between humans and conversational agents.

Making the Web more Pragmatic: Exploring the Potential of some Pragmatic Concepts for IS Research and Development2008Ingår i: The Inaugural meeting of The AIS Special Interest Group on Pragmatist IS Research (SIGPrag 2008) at International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS2008), France, The AIS Special Interest Group on Pragmatist IS Research (SIGPrag 2008) – www.sigprag.org , 2008, 67-72 s.Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper we examine some pragmatic concepts that we believe have a potential in relation to three core activities of the IS-field; 1) description and understanding, 2) evaluation, and 3) design. The concepts that we will examine are “social activity”, “communicative act”, “sequences of communicative acts” or “exchange types”, “communicative feedback” and “turn management”. We describe the concepts and then exemplify how they can be used to analyze web services by examining e-mail and Wikipedia as two activities currently on the web. Our analysis leads to a  partly new description of both phenomena. It also leads to a number of open questions concerning the functionalities of both phenomena.

Co-design Research and Business Development: Case of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)2014Ingår i: Systemic Practice and Action Research, ISSN 1094-429X, E-ISSN 1573-9295, Vol. 27, nr 5, 465-483 s.Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper is presenting a case study of Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) showing how improvements of service quality aspects with Avatars can be managed with a Co-design research approach. The Co-design practices are carried out in different fields of studies. Some of the key advocates of Co-design originate from business. In this study the four steps of Co-design approach is applied. From the first step of Co-design, through interviews, log analysis and a channel survey, findings show that the failed dialogues with Avatar Eva are mainly concerned with five factors: interactivity; dialogue capability; consistency; knowledge; and synonyms. In the second step, carrying out customer workshops, we suggested ten ideal scenarios for Avatar Eva to perform better. In the third step, SAS decision makers decided to implement the first three scenarios: Eva's synonyms; knowledge and Eva's consistency. In the fourth step, another channel survey was carried out as well as a new log analysis to know the impact of the redevelopment above three scenarios. An important result of the study was that the company adopted a continuous use of Co-design as an approach of continuous improvement of the service quality performed by the Avatar Eva. It also opens a new set of questions framing the relation and transformation between Co-design as a research approach for knowledge creation and Co-design as a method for innovation and service quality improvements. The study presents an Extended Co-design Model, which illustrates how the Co-design inspires staff to use it for other functions within and without the SAS.

Metod för utveckling av medborgarkontakter i Marks kommun2008Övrigt (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Modelling Epidemic Influenza: A Novel Approach2012Licentiatavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Analogies can be used in most areas of human communication to highlight points of special interest. The creation of specific, specialised patterns, examples, or analogies for facilitating communication is resource consuming. We therefore hypothesize that there are universal patterns that can be used and reused more economically, compared to specialised patterns, for indexing and communicating knowledge. We have conducted empirical tests with altogether 204 students that each one was given 20 minutes to solve problems from six different scientific areas. The results of our tests show clearly an improvement of their problem solving skill when universal patterns were employed as cognitive aids. The average result of the test group that used universal patterns was 81 per cent higher than that of the control group.

Seventh workshop on exploiting semantic annotations in information retrieval (ESAIR’14)2014Ingår i: CIKM 2014 - Proceedings of the 2014 ACM International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management, Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), 2014, 2094-2095 s.Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

There is an increasing amount of structure on the Web as a result of modern Web languages, user tagging and annotation, emerging robust NLP tools, and an ever growing volume of linked data. These meaningful, semantic, annotations hold the promise to significantly enhance information access, by enhancing the depth of analysis of today’s systems. The goal of the ESAIR’14 workshop remains to advance the general research agenda on this core problem, with an explicit focus on one of the most challenging aspects to address in the coming years. The main remaining challenge is on the user’s side-the potential of rich document annotations can only be realized if matched by more articulate queries exploiting these powerful retrieval cues-and a more dynamic approach is emerging by exploiting new forms of query autosuggest. How can the query suggestion paradigm be used to encourage searcher to articulate longer queries, with concepts and relations linking their statement of request to existing semantic models? How do entity results and social network data in "graph search" change the classic division between searchers and information and lead to extreme personalization-are you the query? How to leverage transaction logs and recommendation, and how adaptive should we make the system? What are the privacy ramifications and the UX aspects-how to not creep out users?

WCET and mixed-criticality: What does confidence in WCET estimations depend upon?2015Ingår i: OpenAccess Series in Informatics, 2015, 65-74 s.Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Mixed-criticality systems integrate components of different criticality. Different criticality levels require different levels of confidence in the correct behavior of a component. One aspect of correctness is timing. Confidence in worst-case execution time (WCET) estimates depends on the process by which they have been obtained. A somewhat naive view is that static WCET analyses determines safe bounds in which we can have absolute confidence, while measurement-based approaches are inherently unreliable. In this paper, we refine this view by exploring sources of doubt in the correctness of both static and measurement-based WCET analysis.

Template-driven Documentation of Best Practices2015Doktorsavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

Knowledge Management has become a key instrument for identifying, creating and sharing organizational knowledge assets. An attractive means for sharing knowledge is Best Practices (BPs), which are proven as well as efficient and effective solutions to recurring problems. BPs can offer significant benefits, including improved performance, reduced re-work and cost savings. However, it is challenging to share and use BP Documents (BPDs) in organizations, which is the overall problem addressed in this thesis. More precisely, the thesis focuses on two sub-problems: 1) The difficulty of finding and selecting appropriate BPs in large collections of BPs impedes the use of BPs, and 2) The low quality of BPDs impedes the use of BPs. Related to these problems, the thesis addresses two sub-goals. The first one is to design a BP Annotation Template for supporting the identification and selection of BPs in BP repositories. The template can be used for organizing and indexing the contents of BPDs independent of domain. The second sub-goal is to design a BP Document Template for supporting the creation, use and evaluation of BP documentation. The BP Document Template offers a structure for describing BPs in a detailed and systematic way.

The research methodology applied is design science, which is the scientific study and creation of artifacts as they are developed and used by people with the goal of solving practical problems. The first artifact, the BP Annotation Template, has been designed and developed based on a literature study and evaluated using expert interviews. The second artifact, the BP Document Template, has been designed and developed based on a literature study using grounded theory as well as on interviews with KM experts. The BP Document Template has been evaluated using expert interviews and demonstrated by being applied in three real-life cases. By basing the two artifacts on literature studies, the two artifacts consolidate, integrate and extend previous work on BP documentation.

The evaluations indicate that the BP Annotation Template provides a strong foundation for identifying and selecting BPs, independent of domain, and that the BP Document Template can support the structuring of BP documents so that they become complete, uniform and easy-to-use. An identified drawback of the two artifacts is the need for extensive resources for implementing and applying them since they may be complex and time-consuming to use. The artifacts are expected to support BP designers as well as BP managers and BP users.

A synthesized classification system for best practices2014Ingår i: Vine: The Journal of Information and Knowledge Management Systems, ISSN 0305-5728, E-ISSN 1474-1032, Vol. 44, nr 2, 249-266 s.Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Purpose – The aim of the study is to propose a classification system for best practices (BPs). The system is intended for organizations that are interested in indexing, storing and retrieving large quantities of BPs. Design/methodology/approach – An extensive literature survey to identify relevant articles by searching e-resource databases, including international journals and conferences related to the use of BP was conducted. A content analysis was conducted on selected articles to identify how BPs can be indexed. Findings – The authors are concerned with identifying what BP frameworks exist in literature and how BPs can be classified based on the features of these BP frameworks. Subsequently, they reviewed the identified frameworks within the literature and built a BP classification system. This classification system consists of a number of features, referred to as variables, where each variable is associated with a set of possible values. Originality/value – The proposed BP classification system is intended to provide a guideline for recognizing general characteristics for all BPs in any domain or organization to aid stakeholders in classifying BPs.

    Abstract [en]

The practical problem addressed in this paper is that it can be problematic to find appropriate best practices (BPs) in a large collection of BPs, covering many different domains, within an organizational database. Our goal was to propose a classification system of BP documentation to facilitate effective use and retrieval of BPs documents in such a large collection of BPs, independent of any domains. We have designed such a domain independent classification system and evaluated it with practitioners and academic experts. We found that all the BP characteristics and labeled values in the proposed classification system were recognized and applied by practitioners as well as academic experts. However, it turned out that some of the characteristics were particularly useful. These characteristics were: implementation area, level of formalization, completeness of description, Balanced Scorecard perspectives, and management process.

An empirical investigation of how best practices can be created: A case study from Saudi Arabia2012Ingår i: Advances in Business-Related Scientific Research Conference (ABSRC): Proceedings OLBIA 2012, 2012Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The paper investigates the identifying of best practices in Saudi Arabia. We adopted an established theoretical framework that is used as a basis for developing questions for the study. In Saudi Arabia, there are efforts for sharing best practices that can be viewed a positive step forward. Interviews were held with selected informants at a number of large companies. The results from the interviews that analyzed and the analysis showed that organizations are not acquainted with the formal BP framework. They linked identification of BP to documented practices, to communities of knowledge, or to specific publications. We suggested that a BP team can obtain some direction toward evaluating and sharing candidate best practice. Hence, we propose that a contribution of best practices from an online network of best practices is a recommended most useful approach for supporting the collaboration between promoting the sharing of knowledge between business enterprises.

Quality Measures for Documentation of Best Practices2014Ingår i: 2014 47th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences (HICSS) / [ed] Sprague, R. H., IEEE Computer Society, 2014, 3410-3419 s.Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Research has identified a set of factors that may impact the success of implementing a best practice (BP). One such factor is to properly document the BP. Without a high quality documentation of BPs it might be difficult to understand and implement BPs within an organization. Therefore, we propose a set of quality measures (QMs) for BPs categorized in the form of a template, aimed at supporting the quality enhancement of documented BPs. The proposed template can be applied during the design of BPs in order to support the construction of high quality documentation of BPs, but can also be applied during the evaluation of already designed BPs. A tentative template was designed based on both a literature review and our own experiences in the area of Knowledge Management. We evaluated the tentative template by presenting it to practitioners and academic experts in the area of BP. Based on their evaluation we refined the model in an iterative approach, adjusting the QMs after each practitioners’ and academic experts’ input until we reached a final template. In this paper, we present the final template of QMs, and demonstrate its feasibility by applying it to existing BPs from a real- life organization. The research methodology applied was design science research.

Applying a Template for Best Practice Documentation2015Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Knowledge Management has become a key instrument for creating, identifying and sharing knowledge assets inorganizations. Best Practice (BP) is a useful means for organizations to improve knowledge sharing. However, lowquality of BP documentations can hinder a successful implementation of BPs, since practitioners may not be able tocorrectly and efficiently use them, or even trust them. In this paper, a BP Document Template (BPDT) for high qualitydocumentation is presented. The final BPDT is a result of the combination of two templates, the first one created based oninterviews with knowledge management experts and the second one based on a literature review using grounded theory. The final BPDT has been applied in three real-life organizations for demonstrating its benefits, drawbacks, completeness, ease of use, and whether it also supports both the design of BPs and the evaluation of already designed BPs. Thedemonstration showed promising results but also some drawbacks. The identified drawbacks can be used as input forfuture research.

Template-driven Best Practice Documentation2015Ingår i: Journal of Information and Knowledge Management, ISSN 0219-6492Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)

However, the implementation of BPs raises several challenges, one of which is that the low quality of BP documentation can impede the use of BPs. One way to address this challenge is by supporting designers in structuring BP documents so that they become complete, uniform and easy-to-use. This support can take the form of a BP Document Template that prescribes the structure of BP documents by defining relevant attributes for describing BPs. This paper proposes a comprehensive and practical BP Document Template for supporting the creation, use and evaluation of BP documents. The design of this template is an example of design science research including requirements elicitation, artifact development, demonstration, and evaluation. The development is based on a combination of expert interviews and a literature study using Grounded Theory, while the demonstration applies the proposed template in three real-life cases, and the evaluation is based on expert interviews. The proposed BP Document Template consolidates, integrates and extends previous work on BP documentation. It thereby offers an effective tool for BP designers, managers, and users that can support them in the design, evaluation and application of BPs.

Verifying the Usefulness of a Classification System of Best Practices2013Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Information Retrieval and the International Conference on Knowledge Management and Information Sharing / [ed] Ana Fred ; Kecheng Liu ; Joaquim Filipe, SciTePress, 2013, 405-412 s.Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

Transfer of best practices (BPs) within an organization can significantly enhance knowledge transfer. However, in order to manage a large number of BPs within an organization, there need to be some structure for how to classify the BPs. In this paper, we present a best practice (BP) system for classifying BPs and evaluate how easy the system is to use for classifying best practices. The research approach applied was design science, which is characterized by designing an artifact in this case a BP classification system, and evaluating it. The evaluation was carried out by asking Master’s students to collect two BPs from organizations and subsequently having them classify the BPs according to the BP classification system. They were also asked to motivate their choices during their act of classification. The results of the evaluation are promising: the BP system could be used for classifying BPs since students utilized all possible values of the BP system during the act of classification. Also, it was easy for the students to justify their classifications, which might be interpreted as an ease of using the BP classification system.

On Aircraft Conceptual Design: A Framework for Knowledge Based Engineering and Design Optimization2008Licentiatavhandling, sammanläggning (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis presents a design framework where analytical tools are linked together and operated from an efficient system level interface. The application field is aircraft conceptual design. Particular attention has been paid to CAD system integration and design optimization.

Aircraft design is an inherently multidisciplinary process. The goal is to search for the design that, in the best of possible ways, fulfills the requirements. It is therefore desirable to be able to effectively investigate and analyze solutions from a variety of points of view, weighting together the results and gathering a general figure of merit. At the same time, increasing competition on a global market forces to shorten the design process and to reduce costs. Thus a system that allows a tight and efficient integration of different disciplines and improving data flow and storage plays a key role.

Integrating a CAD system to the framework is of central relevance. The geometrical model includes most of the information; specific data, required to carry out particular analysis, can be extracted from it. This is possible adopting parametric associative models that are controlled from a spreadsheet user interface. Strategies for building CAD models with a very high degree of flexibility are presented. Not only the external shape can be changed, but also the internal structure can be completely modified. Structural elements can be added or removed, and their position and shaping changed.

In this work the design of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle is used as test case for comparing three different optimization algorithms. The presented framework is also used for automatically design Micro Aerial Vehicles, starting from a short list of requirements and ending with a physical prototype produced by a rapid prototyping machine.

    Abstract [en]

To work together in virtual teams has increasingly become a natural change

in how organizations work. Due to demands from the environment,

organizations have had to transform from traditional ways of working to

becoming more flexible and adaptive. The aim of this article is to identify

obstacles, problems, and presumptions in order to enable the virtual team to

be successful. A project — The TIC-project — is described, and results from

a study concerning collaboration and networking among companies within

Technical Communication are presented. Results show that, to a great

extent, experiences from networking are lacking. Furthermore, trust must be

embedded in the teams, meaning that personal meetings must precede

virtual meetings. Most interviewees declared a wish to collaborate despite

being competitors. Finally, questions and topics for further research are

    presented.

    Abstract [en]

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of alt.chi, two of this year's alt.chi chairs, Ames and Lindtner, will moderate a panel with chairs from previous years to reflect on the legacy of alt.chi in the broader CHI community and discuss where the track should be headed in the future. We intend the panel to be highly interactive, incorporating the audience in discussion and debate. We encourage those with thoughts on alt.chi as well as those who want to learn more about the track, to attend and actively participate. The following questions will start the discussion: 1. What is the role of alt.chi in the CHI community, and how has it shifted across the last decade? 2. What alt.chi research papers or themes have been particularly influential or provocative? 3. What is the state of critical discourse and reflection in alt.chi? Has alt.chi been a successful venue for such work? Should it be? 4. Where is alt.chi headed, what is missing, and how could it change?

    Abstract [en]

The Information Systems research group at Mid Sweden University is the result of four separate groups, spread across three disciplines, artificially thrown together because we didn’t seem to fit into other developed research groups. What we were seen to have in common was ‘information’. The disciplines are: Archives and Information Science, Business Management and Organization, and Informatics.

Shortly after this uncertain start, the University launched a demanding internal process for Assessment of Research and Coproduction (ARC13) over the previous five years. We didn’t have that much past together, so we set out to build ourselves a future, exploring our common interests as we gathered data for the evaluation. We pooled our research, hired a facilitator to help with a SWOT analysis, built trust within the group and achieved a remarkably good report from the external assessors. Participation in the multidisciplinary InterPARES Trust in Digital Records in an Increasingly Networked World Project has been an inspiring factor in the Archives and Information Science contribution to our new collaboration. Our Information Systems research group now focuses on five research challenges: Information value, quality, accessibility, sustainability and trustworthiness.  Now we are having fun exploring the possibilities, confident that our InfoSys research group has its own sustainable future.

Recordkeeping definitions in legislation:: a conceptual step towards smoothing business interaction in the digitally networked world?2013Ingår i: Archives: the Future: Australian Society of Archivists 2013 Conference / [ed] Shapley, Maggie, Canberra, 2013Konferensbidrag (Övrig (populärvetenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

Legislation is important to recordkeeping strategies and requirements, since it determines which records are needed for legally legitimate actions. Yet the concepts of a document, a record, a case, a transaction, etc., are frequently defined differently in various laws even within national boundaries and are urgently in need of harmonization to minimize complications and barriers to e-business transactions.

Every country has its own legislation system which has been adjusted over time in correlation to national context and its surrounding society (Duranti, 1989-1990, p. 5). Duranti and Goh (2012) provided sound arguments as to why it is important to ensure national archival legislation keeps pace with our digitally networked society with its increasingly blurred borders. In addition to their own national law, members of the European Union (EU) are obliged to follow EU-legislation requirements. There are three types of EU legislation: regulations, directives and decisions. A regulation is applicable in all EU countries. Directives are general rules. A decision is a stipulation of issues of concern for specifically mentioned persons or organizations (European Commission, 2013).  Recommendations and statements are not binding, but may, for example, be used by the EU as support in interpretation of EU-legislation (Sveriges Riksdag, 2013). Hence, within public organizations, there is a close relation between records, recordkeeping processes, legislation and accountability.  Yet research in Sweden has shown that 24/7 e-service web-interfaces serving e-government strategies and ambitions are sometimes developed without consulting recordkeeping professionals, in ignorance of legal requirements for capture of records and that preservation issues are rarely considered when acquiring new digital systems (Kallberg, Svärd and Sundberg, 2010). Several other European studies also identify a lack of recordkeeping awareness within public organizations (Barata, 2004; Valtonen, 2007; Shepherd, Stevenson, & Flinn, 2009; Riksarkivet, 2010). However, there is currently a strong European political ambition to implement eGovernment services, which aims to promote cross-border business development. On the other hand, this challenges archival thinking to meet business, technological and legal requirements stipulated for each country. Varying legal definitions used can cause major problems for transactions both within a country and across national borders, even in something as seemingly simple as exchanging e-invoices. This paper will discuss an approach to identifying a way forward for harmonizing legislation that contains recordkeeping requirements across the EU.

    • Using the ICA multilingual terminology database, to check and add to definitions already found there
    • Checking against definitions found in international standards.

Research towards harmonizing these crucial definitions will be very challenging, given linguistic and cultural differences but the ICA multilingual terminology database is a potential vehicle for checking existing usage, adding to the definitions and quotations from legalislation and the literature already found there and adding new terms. The foundation version of the ICA-funded Terminology Database, developed as an ICA Section for Archival Educators’ project led and hosted by the University of British Columbia, contains definitions with examples of usage for an initial 300 archival terms across 16 languages. It is planned for public release in the first half of 2013.

Mature Public e-Services Without Mature Recordkeeping – An Impossibility?2010Ingår i: iRMA Information and Records Management Annual, ISSN 1836-3202, 71-82 s.Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish Government has established the eGovernment Delegation agency to identify and support excellence in e-government implementation strategies. This agency has commenced working with the National Archives, to ensure that archival requirements are addressed when developing new e-services. However, the prevailing view of archives is a traditional curatorial approach, which focuses on capturing the end product once actions have been completed. In the digital environment, the prevailing archival practice frameworks are not adequate to the task of capturing the full digital context and process that is essential for a complete record. Previously, when paper records were aggregated on a physical file, the full record of processes was more likely to be captured and managed for the long term.

Results from two empirical case studies will be used to present and illustrate the risks and problems generated by an approach where the records are not identified and captured until late in the business process. In this paper the term post hoc approach to records capture is used to describe the method whereby an attempt is made to capture records, including the necessary metadata, after they are created, without prior planning or system design. One of the Swedish eGovernment Delegation’s aims is to motivate public agencies to reach level four on Layne and Lee’s e-government maturity model, that is, full integration of interaction between agencies and citizens. However, the model does not incorporate any recordkeeping requirements in its maturity benchmarks. It is clear these kinds of e-services are so complex that late intervention by archivists will not be adequate for needed recordkeeping support and long-term preservation. So it is essential that guidance on archival preservation of integrated e-services is made available as soon as possible, particularly as current trends in government indicate that e-services will be outsourced to private providers.

Strategies are proposed for including recordkeeping re- quirements in e-service models. Advantageously, this can be done using existing benchmarking tools such as GARP, ISO 15489, ISO 30301 and the ICA Principles and Functional Requirements for Records In Electronic Office Environments.

Open data through the archive: A new role for archivists2014Konferensbidrag (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The role of the archivist in exploiting and accessing open data as public records in an open government environment is explored.  The possible role, responsibilities and mandate of an archivist in this new public sector context are examined. Necessary knowledge, skills and competence are identified.

    Content:

Expectations of a more proactive release of public records and technical developments that support new ways of publishing and reusing digital information, for example as open data on the internet, create new challenges and change the way public records are managed and made accessible to citizens, which will also involve new professions in the management of records. Fundamentally this raises questions of how, in this new management environment, the trustworthiness of the records could be maintained and how the archives and records management profession could contribute to this, related to other professionals involved in these processes.

In Sweden there is a long tradition of openness and citizens´ right to access public records. But with the implementation of e-government follows a new perception of what openness means and “open government” is a concept that seems to go further and be more proactive. A part of this study will be to analyze and define what is meant by ‘open government’ and ‘open data’ as they are used in Sweden, i.e. how ‘open data’ differs from ‘public records’ for example. In Sweden there is no formal records manager profession, but the archivist often does the corresponding work. That is why this project also includes the archivists´ role in the open government environment.

This study will reflect upon the archivists´ role in this process and what is needed to ensure a trusted proactive release of public records. To identify what skills, guidelines, knowledge and mandate are needed. The study will focus on StockholmCity’s work on open data, which is an important part of the open government agenda, through the perspective of Stockholm City Archives.

    Scientific contribution:

Case study methods are used to examine the role of the archivist in the domain of access to public records in an open government and open data environment. The study examines what role an archivist in the public sector currently has, and what knowledge, skills and competence are needed for these new challenges.

Interpretation of existing work and the perception of the situation by practicing archivists in this changing environment provide valuable data. The case study is based on the City of Stockholm because it is quite progressive in its work on open data. It is now running an open data project, in which the Stockholm City Archive plays an active role. The role of the archivist in practice, experiences and possible needs and missing factors will be explored. Data will be collected by interviews and text analysis. Needed strategies and guidelines will be identified.

Benchmarking Information Management Practice and Competence in Swedish Organizations2011Ingår i: Proceedings of the 5th European Conference on Information Management and Evaluation: University of Insubria, Como, Italy. 8-9 September 2011 / [ed] Walter Castelnovo and Elena Ferrari, Reading, UK: Academic Conferences Limited, 2011, 28-36 s.Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

As organizations transform towards e-service provision and operations sophisticated, organization-wide approaches to information management are required. However, there is reason to believe that few organizations have developed a fully holistic approach to thinking about developing and managing their information assets to ensure their current and future accessibility and usability. There is an increasing awareness of the need to design systems that ensure information is accessible and re-usable, yet vital information often becomes increasingly inaccessible over time, to the disadvantage of business intelligence, business needs, customer service and regulatory requirements. An extensive survey of the state of the art of information management within Swedish organizations was undertaken to gain an understanding of current approaches, what competence is currently available within organizations and what competencies are perceived to be lacking or need development to ensure sustainable management of information as a business asset. This paper presents insights into how well or poorly records managers’ and archivists’ expertise is incorporated into whole- of-organization strategic planning for information management. It was rare to find collaboration between enterprise information architects and IT professionals with the recordkeeping professionals, who have expertise in structuring information and metadata as well as system requirements that contribute to ensuring long-term preservation, which would potentially minimize the proliferation of legacy systems from which records and information are very costly or impossible to migrate or extract. Many archivists considered that it is not their role to participate in wider information management strategies, preferring to focus on the capture of records into an ’e-archive’ without recognizing that information in the archive is a potentially re-usable business asset. This initial research contributes to an understanding of information cultures within organizations. It is intended to be used as a benchmark: follow-up studies are planned at regular intervals in the future to measure change in practice, attitudes and professional alliances to improve information management.

Tree Structures in Broadcast Encryption2005Licentiatavhandling, monografi (Övrigt vetenskapligt)
    Abstract [en]

The need for broadcast encryption arises when a sender wishes to securely distribute messages to varying subsets of receivers, using a broadcast channel, for instance in a pay-TV scenario. This is done by selecting subsets of users and giving all users in the same subset a common decryption key. The subsets will in general be overlapping so that each user belongs to many subsets and has several different decryption keys. When the sender wants to send a message to some users, the message is encrypted using keys that those users have. In this thesis we describe some broadcast encryption schemes that have been proposed in the literature. We focus on stateless schemes which do not require receivers to update their decryption keys after the initial keys have been received; particularly we concentrate on the Subset Difference (SD) scheme.

We consider the effects that the logical placement of the receivers in the tree structure used by the SD scheme has on the number of required transmissions for each message. Bounds for the number of required transmissions are derived based on the adjacency of receivers in the tree structure. The tree structure itself is also studied, also resulting in bounds on the number of required transmissions based on the placement of the users in the tree structure.

By allowing a slight discrepancy between the set of receivers that the sender intends to send to and the set of receivers that actually can decrypt the message, we can reduce the cost in number of transmissions per message. We use the concept of distortion to quantify the discrepancy and develop three simple algorithms to illustrate how the cost and distortion are related.

Powertrain Model Assesment for Different Driving Tasks through Requirement Verification2016Ingår i: Proceedings of the 9th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation, 2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

For assessing whether a system model is a good candidate for a particular simulation scenario or choosing the best system model between multiple design alternatives it is important to be able to evaluate the suitability of the system model. In this paper we present a methodology based on finite state machine requirements verifying system behavior in a Modelica environment where the intended system model usage is within a moving base driving simulator. A use case illustrate the methodology with a Modelica powertrain system model using replaceable components and measured data from a Golf V. The achieved results show the importance of context of requirements and how users are assisted in finding system model issues.

A Framework for Credibility Assessment of a Powertrain Model in Driving Simulator Studies2016Ingår i: Proceedings of the 36th FISITA World Automotive Congress, 2016Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

When performing a driving simulator study, validity of the vehicle model for the intended driving task is of key importance; otherwise, the reliability of the study results might be jeopardized. In this paper a framework for real-time credibility assessment of the simulated longitudinal dynamics by a powertrain model in a moving base driving simulator is presented. The framework consists of the physical system model and a quality model which run in parallel in real time. The developed framework has been evaluated by offline simulations, as well as in real-time in a moving base driving simulator. The evaluation results showed that the developed framework can accurately capture the validity of the powertrain model in different driving conditions and provide the credibility level of the simulation results to the simulator operator in real-time.

Digital divides revisited: towards a model for analysis2004Ingår i: Electronic government: Proceedings of the third international conference, EGOV 2004, Zaragoza, Spain, August 30 - September 3, 2004 / [ed] Roland Traunmüller, Berlin: Springer , 2004, 289-292 s.Konferensbidrag (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a model for categories of divides, and how these categories are interrelated. The factors are found by a literature study from different countries attempting to measure various divides. The model is based on earlier research on the ‘divide’ and includes: physical access, autonomy of use, know-how and motivation. Depending on the type of digital divide and the local situation, rectifying efforts must address the most crucial factor, which could be any of the four. The paper also introduces the nature and amount of different proposed divides, and relations among factors.

Learning e-Learning: the restructuring of students beliefs and assumptions about learning2010Ingår i: International Journal on E-learning, ISSN 1537-2456, Vol. 9, nr 4, 435-461 s.Artikel i tidskrift (Refereegranskat)
    Abstract [en]

This paper builds on a case study on e-learning in Sri Lanka with focus on students’ underlying beliefs about how one learns. E-learning programs are most often set up with the assumption that students should think, act and learn independently and with underlying values of constructivism and learner–centred learning. For students used to classroom-based, didactic education the transition to the e-learning paradigm is, however, neither predetermined nor immediate. The objective of this paper is to find out if, and how, the e-learning practice manages to transform students into more independent and self sustaining learners. By drawing on Structuration Theory this study analyzes and compares novice and experienced students’ assumptions about learning when asking for a particular support function, because support needs should change if students start adopting the e-learning view on how learning is achieved. Findings show that students increasingly adopt the e-learning view on learning as they progress through the program. Students take increasingly more ownership of their learning and the teacher is no longer seen as the container of all knowledge. The importance of discussions also increases over time indicating that knowledge is no longer seen as being transmitted but rather created.
