    Abstract [en]

    In French, the category of ‘adverbs’ is heterogenic: it includes all terms that cannot be considered as prepositions, conjunctions or interjections. Such a definition of the notion of ‘adverb’ makes ambiguous not only the classification of adverbs but also the description of their syntactical functions and their semantic characteristics. The inherent ambiguity of the term ‘adverb’ can be revealed by the means of an in-depth study of the syntactical and semantical characteristics of the marker par exemple. On the basis of these observations, the present article aims specifically to show that the adoption of the notion of ‘adverbial’ allows a better understanding of the nature and functions of a wide range of multi-functional markers and connectors.

    Abstract

    Based on the assumption that any language, and particularly verbal communication, seeks, deliberately or not, to have an impact on others, our study is as a reflection on the power of language in general and especially of verbal language, in establishing inter-community and inter-subjective relations in Diderot’s posthumous novel The Nun. Therefore, our analysis aims to examine deliberate and spontaneous strategies that assign power and authority to the speech. The Word in The Nun is powerful, not only because it arouses deep feelings, it changes opinions and beliefs, but also because it makes others take actions. Contrary to what Suzanne, the heroine of the novel, claims, the use of the word – especially in the inter-subjective communications – has always a persuasive aim, sometimes unacknowledged, sometimes involuntary, but never absent. We will examine the problem of inter-subjective interaction through its various manifestations in a text that never reveals all its secrets and that always defying interpretations attributed to it. 

    The question of manipulation, which cuts across various fields – such as seduction, persuasion, conviction ... – without being identified with any of them, will be at the center of our concerns.

    What we are interested in are not only the ‘words’ that the novel’s characters say or write, but also the reasons that led these characters to choose and use them. The will to convince, to persuade or to dissuade others, which appears powerfully in several enigmatic phrases that populate The Nun, is not an end in itself. Influencing others is the aim of all the characters. And if any language is a network of relationships, manipulation is its mainstay.

    La présente étude tend à identifier et à décrire le cadre structurel dans lequel l’exemple et son marqueur s’insèrent, et ce dans le but de révéler la nature de la relation que le marqueur d’exemplification par exemple établit entre X et Y selon le schéma X par exemple Y. Notre recherche vise précisément à discerner les caractéristiques formelles, sémantiques, mais surtout argumentatives de la séquence-exemple et à analyser ses fonctions dans le discours. Nous essayerons, dans un premier moment, de comprendre le genre de contribution sémantique que le marqueur d’exemplification peut véhiculer au sein des constructions dans lesquelles il est intégré. Notre analyse s’intéressera, dans un second moment, à la relation d’exemplification. Nous tâcherons de présenter et de définir les différentes valeurs que véhicule la séquence discursive introduite par le marqueur par exemple.

    This thesis deals with exemplification and example markers in contemporary French. Earlier research has focused mainly on the rhetorical aspect and showed less interest in syntax and semantics.

    The current study is based on several written corpora; the data are provided by C-ParlEur (Corpus of European Parliament discourse), by a corpus composed of non-academic humanities texts, and by a third one consisting of twenty contemporary French novels.

    The first part of the thesis focuses on the identification of the example in written text. Emphasis is given to the study of exemplification as a relation between two segments that are pragmatically linked. The analysis leads us to propose two main categories: the example-sample and the example-model. While the first represents the example as a non-specific and arbitrarily chosen element of the paradigm, the second shows the example as a particular and typical element.

    The second and third parts of the study are devoted to a detailed analysis of the characteristics and functions of three markers par exemple, comme and notamment – not only from a semantic and pragmatic viewpoint, but also from a rhetorical perspective. This account includes a thorough description of their functions and of the different constructions in which the markers appear. It also embraces a detailed analysis of the intersection between the example markers and the segment they introduce, as well as between the exemplifying unit and the sentence in its entirety.

    Even though par exemple, comme and notamment have several distinctive properties, they also have many common characteristics. Our analyses lead to the result that the segment these markers introduce is an intermediate link in the argumentative chain and thus entails a re-evaluation of the traditional definition, which recognizes only that the example’s role is to provide the mental imagery needed to overcome the difficulty of shaping an object or understanding a concept. The study of example and exemplification as a linguistic phenomenon allows us to refine the rhetorical definition of examples as inductive arguments, to propose a multi-dimensional description that aims to identify the examples’ main textual, topical and argumentative roles, and to reveal exemplification as a complex strategy in the negotiation of meaning.

    Cet article tend à montrer que La Religieuse, tout comme le mythe desSirènes, ressuscite la question du savoir périlleux qui voue à la mort celui qui enbénéficie, mais aussi celui qui le détient. Derrière l’amour de la liberté auquelSuzanne Simonin, l’héroïne de La Religieuse, prétend se donner, se dessine une quête touchant à une question fondamentale : celle de l’identité. La quête del’identité aboutit elle-même à une non moins mortifiante quête du « savoir ». Etc’est précisément cette douloureuse quête qui mène l’héroïne à la mort. Suzannes’obstine à détenir le « savoir », à révéler qui « elle est » ; et ce savoir, cruellementacquis, l’anéantit.
