Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to to examine what teachers think about visual art and how the learning process in this subject does look like. To answer these issues, I made interviews with five teachers of visual art from different schools, and I examined several examples of pupils’ artworks. The stories of the teachers were analyzed in relation to governing documents and with assumptions from sociocultural theory, postmodernism and pedagogical - aesthetic research as theoretical point of view.

By the qualitative interview method, the observations of the pupil’s artworks, and by the analysis of the interviews with the teachers, I have come to the conclusion that teachers think differently about art but they try to keep themselves in line with the national governing documents. Its affects aspects of disciplines, styles, techniques and medium that is exemplified by the pupil’s art works, and it points out similarities and differences between the pupil’s art works and between the teachers when teaching visual art.

It´s called being fabulous!: Genus och sexualitet i de visuella praktikerna kring Youtube-fenomenet Pewdiepie2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

It’s not called being gay.

Snowboardens bildspråk 1980-2010: En kartläggning2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Snowboarding is today a major winter sport with its own equipment, its own culture and elite riders. For professional athletes or for those who just snowboard for fun, snowboard becomes an extension of their body while in motion.

The layout on the boards has changed over the years but despite of this there is a lack of scientific studies in the field. Therefore, this study aimed to identify how the graphics of 240 snowboards have evolved between 1980-2010, and fill some of these holes in the scientific documentation.

This survey was based on a visual content analysis, which resulted in interesting observations. The results that emerged were that the result can be generalized and that the development of snowboards graphics has changed over the decades. Snowboards from the various decades have specific characteristics that this study provides.

    Abstract [en]

Some of the most perceptive contributions to the geographic study of media and communication have been in areas of landscapes studies and geohumanities. To bring landscape and geohumanities insights together more explicitly with communication and media, this progress report draws on George Revill’s concept of an ‘arc of sound’, expanding the concept’s scope to an arc of communication – a dynamic trajectory connecting one vantage point to another through various translations and shifts. It is a mix of integration and translation that forms its own space, place and time, integrating elements of embodied performance, multiple sensory modalities, temporality, absence and excess. Arcs of communication often depend on collaboration and can produce transformations of identity. The concept of the arc of communication enables discovery of numerous threads connecting landscape studies to geohumanities while deepening geographical understandings of media and communication.

Going offline2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

My interest in Going Offline was twofold. (1) I wanted to investigate how the entrance of a new (virtual) space had affected our understanding of the concepts of space, time and body, and what this could entail for the sole individual. (2) I wanted to, in a really hands on manner, create a small bug in an otherwise well functioning, fast and effective system of communication. In other words to intervene the course of events in my everyday life to affect myself and others connected to it. Like the small stone thrown into the water creating rings (movements) on the surface, where the closest one, which is the most vigorous, influences the next one and so on. Overall I aimed to explore the sole individual’s connection to social structures and a global phenomena.

Dressed for Success? – Tech startupsuppfattning om värdet av den visuellaidentiteten2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

There is no doubt that a great brand requires a clear visual identity, but what

does it mean in practice? The objective of this study was to investigate the tech

startups perception of the value of the visual identity. Through semi-structured

interviews, with nine respondents from nine different tech startups, as well as a

business coach, the study analyses how tech startups evaluate the visual identity

in relation to how they have been working with it.

The general view, based on the interviews, showed that the visual identity is

important, where all respondents have updated the visual identity one or several

times thus, the visual identity has evolved over time.

The study also revealed that tech startups whose founders had a background in

design or communication found its visual identity on a early stage, albeit

    smaller updates have been done.

Although all respondents emphasize the importance of the visual identity, they

see measureability of design, as a problem. As startups in general, but tech

startups in particular, have limited resources, prioritizing the visual identity is

seen as a risk. Therefor tech startups tend to prioritize other aspect above the

    visual identity.

Mastering Desires: Images of Love, Lust and Want in Fourteenth Century Vadstena2013In: Pangs of Love and longing: Configurations of desire in Premodern litterature / [ed] Anders Cullhed, Carin Franzén, Anders Hallengren, Mats Malm, Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2013, 500, p. 235-252Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Lady Birgitta Birgersdotter (ca 1303–1373), Saint Birgitta of Sweden, was born and lived in an environment with noble ideals and with extensive international contacts. She was a wife and mother of eight, and a lady at the court of king Magnus Eriksson and Magistra to Queen Blanche of Sweden. Lady Birgitta was a traveller and a pilgrim. As a widow, she chosed the spiritual life not by retreat to a nunnery, but by leaving the country with the aim of founding a new monastic order. Birgitta and her large entourage began the journey to Rome in 1349.

Her background in the highest nobility, and a courtly culture that she highly esteemed, is reflected in her revelations. I will argue that this courtliness is also communicated in the use of imagery in Vadstena monastery the years around 1400. But pictures were not without its problems, as will become apparent in another example in the very same context.

The Revelations were written down in Latin and in Old Swedish from the 1340s in Sweden to her death in Rome in July1373. Saint Birgitta had reason to reflect on issues like desire not only from her own private perspective, but also because her Revelations in the end formed the basis for an international monastic order. On the one hand there were bodily desires that should be mastered, on the other there was a religious desire for God.

The revelations were widely spread. During the canonization to en elite among the clergy, kings and noblemen and later they were used in the Birgittine convents, and quoted in innumerable sermons and spread to cathedrals and the parish churces. Therefore, they can be used when the aim is to highlight the use of imagery and devotional life in the Middle Ages. These texts reached far beyond the scholarly and monastic environment.

This paper focuses on expressions of the ambivalent relationship as indicated above. My intention is to highlight the often complex relation between text and image, and to include adopting of form between secular and spiritual imagery in the discussion. As desires involves feelings, I will pay attention to expressions of the senses. The question is if and how the presumed ambivalence between worldly and spiritual, is evident in the Revelations and imagery in Vadstena? What visual codes were used? How was imagery used, and what attitudes towards imagery can we trace through text and images?

    Abstract [sv]

The Redheaded Man2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Illustrating the same story in three different ways explores illustration processes and demonstrates the impact of illustration on the interpretation of the story. Enhancing the transparency of creative processes places an illustrator into the highlighted position as the producer of visual content and ideas.

The story of The Redheaded Man, written by Russian absurdist Daniil Kharms in 1937, functions as a framework for this conceptual illustration research. Although the anti-narrative features of the story almost reject illustration, its polysemous nature opens a path for the variety of approaches in visualization of the text.

In the attached report I introduce three different approached and illustrated responses to the story of The Redheaded Man realized during the MA degree work project, as well as the reflections and categorization of the content and ideas behind each illustration project.

The outcome of the project addresses the questions of creative processes and illustrator’s visual decisions on both personal and meta-level, addressing the need of developing the theoretical content for the field of illustration.

Bildundervisning i bildkommunikation och bildmedier: En litteraturstudie av didaktisk forskning kring bildämnets läroplansfokus2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Animation through Body Language: A study using the fictional character Mokhtar2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Learning to read body language is something we do throughout our whole life. It is a complex non-verbal language that can express more than words. In this study we investigate the possibility to use only body language to portray emotions to the viewer. In a background of a game project we have used a character that has his face covered, therefore, facial expression is not visible during the online survey, which we used as a method for our investigation. As a foundation we have created four character animations to portray anger, frustration, exhaustion and hurt. To find the answer if it is possible to recognize those five emotions in the character animations survey, participants were obligated to name the emotion expressed on each of the video clips. The results of this study show that the characters body language could be sufficient to portray those five emotions. However, it was concluded that body language could be enough to represent the character's emotional state to the viewer; but by including facial expressions we could help to portray the emotion even further.

"DEN ÄR FINT MÅLAD, MEN GER INGENTING": Estetiska resonemang och diskussioner vid bildsamtal2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Uppsatsen ”DEN ÄR FINT MÅLAD, MEN GER INGENTING” Estetiska resonemang

    betraktaren.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In the communication industry, the competition is challenging amongst both new graduates looking for employment and those with experience. An im-portant part of the application is a portfolio that visually shows the person's skills and talents. An online questionnaire survey of 50 firms in the communications industry was used to investigate how they recruit new staff, as well as their perspective on the portfolio in this context. The study is also aimed at highlighting differences in the responses, depending on the size of the agencies. The results of the survey showed that the most common way for employment in the communications industry is through personal contacts, and that the quality of the portfolio is the most important when hiring. When applying for a job the agencies preferred to receive a digital portfolio, but at a job interview they pre-ferred a combination of a physical and digital portfolio. Minor differences were found in the responses depending on the size of the agency.

    Abstract [sv]

Boy meets Girl: En undersökning om narrativ och genus inom romantisk komedi.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Grafisk identitet –Phan Antik2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

he company Phan Antik is dealing with antiques from the Middle Ages until the mid 19th century, mainly original furniture. The business owner is well established in the industry, has good knowledge of the area and good customer contacts, which is important in order to succeed. However, Phan Antik lacks a graphic identity and the need for it is available to reach more customers. At present, customers are mainly players in the wholesale sector and in the future, the company wants to reach out to more private individuals in both Sweden and internationally, via website and social media. A graphical identity is needed to create a coherent unified image of the company outward. This report addresses the issues:•       How should the company do to communicate with a graphic identity to its current and prospective customers?•       How can the time period Phan Antik deal with in the graphic identity? Was there any characteristic for the period of the Middle Ages to the 19th century? Special fonts or colors used?•       How should the graphic identity be applied to material?Through literature studies, fact-finding, analysis and interviews, a result was obtained that led to a graphic identity.A graphic identity containing a graphic profile with logo, corporate brand, fonts and colors was created on the basis of knowledge. The graphic identity was then applied practically on printed matter and on a web page mockup.

Alcohol advertising: A Minor Field Study in Cape Town.2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to examine marketers view of alcohol advertising. Focus have been

on its potential effect on the society, moral aspects and its relation to sustainability, identity, gender

and celebrities. The method used was semi-structured interviews with eight marketers at three

advertise agencies/production companies in Cape Town who have working experience of alcohol

advertising and this have been analysed in relation to impact and identity theories as well as ethics.

The result showed that majority of the marketers did not believe alcohol advertising increase

alcohol consumption nor lead to alcohol abuse but rather create brand awareness and competition

between brands. Their perception was also that alcohol brands are connected to identity in South

Africa and that using celebrities in alcohol advertising could be highly effecting when using the

right celebrity. One conclusion is that the participants did not suffer from moral myopia since they

were fully aware of what harm alcohol could have on the society. Regarding moral discussion at

work was it some of the marketers that did not talk about ethical issues which could be a sign of

moral muteness but it is really hard to draw any conclusion about it after a short interview.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to identify the advertising agencies considered characteristics of guerrilla campaigns and agencies' working process on guerrilla campaigns, with the particular focus on the visual guerrilla campaigns, using semi-structured interviews.Five semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted. Respondents were selected strategically. The results showed distinct characteristics of guerrilla campaigns. Based on these, the following definition were conducted: a guerrilla campaign is characterised by the lack of bought media exposure, a creative, often situational and environmentally adapted design, that without assistance from other sales promotions produce high interest or attention relative to the utilized budget, in order to create a deeper relationship with the recipient. The working methods of a visual guerrilla campaign and a regular guerrilla campaign do not differ remarkably from a traditional campaign. The study also showed that the spread of a guerrilla campaign was important for its effectiveness.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Alternate Perception of Objects2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 80 credits / 120 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Humans are surrounded by objects. The human-object interaction is more frequent than the human-human interaction. The history of objects is as old as the history of human beings. This fact establishes and defines their meanings in a social and cultural context.

This essay aims to look at the established meanings of corpus objects and possibilities of developing new meanings of tableware and other objects related to table in contemporary craft. To investigate if the perception of the object changes with the change of material or its formal aesthetics. How can the meanings of the objects and their identities be altered  or substituted? Do we recognize the objects the same way if their form and function is altered? What role does material play in how one reads an object?

This essay looks at the importance of objects and the role they play in our daily life. To explore what lies in an object beyond its function and the notion of materiality, what can be the boundaries and limitations of our perception, understanding and tradition of objects?

    Abstract [en]

There are quite a few articles that addresses the area of colour associations. Where some focus on what associations certain colours has, while others write about colour combinations or cultural and geographical differences when it gets to colour associations. Then there are articles concerning marketing and colour importance as well. The aim for this thesis was to create an overview of colour associations, because there is quite a bit of literature to be found about this subject. Also, to see which colours that are linked to certain associations, and to highlight the importance of colour in marketing. Eight articles concerning this subject, both scientific and experience-based articles were selected. Thereafter they were analysed and compiled into a table containing the colours associated to certain association. These tables were sorted by positive, negative and gender associations. The conclusion is that an association can contain multiple colours and a single colour can contain multiple associations. Black is often associated with something negative, whereas there are other colours such as orange and green that are solely positive. Something that is important to consider about marketing and colour associations is that colour is dependable in which context it is used. Which means you shouldn’t focus too much on what a single colour is associated with, but instead have in mind what context said colour are to be used in.

Visuella kompromisser: Den visuella adaptionen av Watchmen 2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Sisters! Making Films, Doing Politics: An Exploration in Artistic Research2016Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

How does film become a political act? That is the question that the artistic research project Sisters! Making Films, Doing Politics revolves around. Taking Hannah Arendt’s ideas about the constitution of the political arena as its point of departure, this dissertation reflects on the aesthetic mechanisms that underlie contemporary strategies for collective and feminist filmmaking. Sisters! Making Films, Doing Politics draws on the particular historical archive of radical filmmaking and film theory that relates to the British film collectives of the 1970s: The Berwick Street Film Collective, Cinema Action and The London Women’s Film Group. Inspired by a Marxist-feminist tradition, these collectives explicitly sought to involve film in the political discussions and events that at that time took place in British society. In the dissertation’s first chapter, which deals with these film collectives, a theoretical, historical and artistic framework is established that is subsequently developed in four chapters that discuss the film productions that constitute the artistic core of the project: Sisters! (2011), Mutual Matters (2012), Choreography for the Giants (2013) and Conversation: Stina Lundberg Dabrowski Meets Petra Bauer (2010). As the dissertation argues, each of these films productions discloses specific aspects of the relation of politics and film aesthetics. It goes on to identify the precise relationships and the displacements that take place between the historical material, Arendt’s concept of the political act and the production of the films. A the centre of the investigation stands Sisters!, a film project carried out in collaboration with the London-based feminist organisation Southall Black Sisters.

Zegache Stories2013Other (Other (popular science, discussion, etc.))
    Abstract [en]

What is it like to live in St. Ana Zegache? In March 2013, two workshops in trans-medial storytelling were held with young people and adults from the pueblo, giving them an opportunity to document in their own words and photographs what it is like to live there. Participants were asked to create two brief stories, the first focusing on what they saw as the most important features of the town, and the second a more personal story from their own lives.

In this instance, Zegache Stories was a computer-based interactive installation in the documentation room of the exhibit "Finding our way home", as part of the concluding seminar of the EITC in Brussels, October 2013.

Awakening the past, Expressing the present: Stories of photography, migration and belief in a Mexican village2014In: Photographic Powers: Helsinki Photomedia 2014 / [ed] Mika Elo, Marko Karo, Helsinki: Aalto University , 2014, p. 308-333Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

How may the practice of photography shift ways of looking at oneself and at one's community? Can creating visual narratives also support reexamining the past, whereby old pictures and other objects gain new significance? This article addresses these questions in a study of several workshops on transmedial storytelling in the town of St. Ana Zegache, Oaxaca, Mexico. We chose photography as the primary medium for the workshops, based on our interest in the visual vernacular and the relative ease of using simple cameras to acquire first-person accounts of everyday experience. We did not anticipate that participants would seize the opportunity to work across media, to include other objects and images, weaving alternative histories into their stories.

We found that telling stories through photographs opened possibilities for some participants to reinterpret experiences of the self in relation to place, community and beliefs. This became ‘empowering’ in the moment when each person presented his or her story, sharing this reinterpretation with other workshop participants, simultaneously re-enacting his or her place within the community. Examples included experiences of migration, familial relations, and their own creative practice.

Old photographs and objects, as repositories of histories and memories, acquired new dimensions when incorporated into contemporary stories.  Participants also reflected on the value of their narratives beyond the immediate community, to people elsewhere who would be interested in the culture of Zegache, and ‘how we live here.’ They saw the digital interface as a network offering the possibility of sharing their stories with an audience from afar. The reflexive power of photography in this context revealed the image as multidimensional, beyond visual representation, encompassing both individual and collective experience.
