    Abstract [sv]

Testimonio and representation: An analysis of articles about women workers in Nicaraguan free trade zones2005Inngår i: Politics conference: Sixth Essex Graduate Conference in Political Theory ‘Difference, borders, others’, 2005Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The following presentation discusses representation and testimonio in Swedish information on Nicaraguan women workers that has been produced by so called ‘development workers’. In Spanish the word testimonio is literally translated as ‘testimony’, as in the act of testifying or bearing witness in a legal or religious sense. In articles such as “The slave market in Nicaragua is growing” and “Karla – an ordinary robot” the journalist and development worker, Victoria Myrén, translates and mediates stories by women workers in Nicaraguan free trade zones for Swedish speaking readers. The articles express a sense of urgency to communicate experiences of repression and a desire to represent the way marginalized positions are used to legitimate capitalist recolonizing. In an attempt to demonstrate the suffering of women within the free trade zones, the articles position the reader as a jury in a courtroom listening to close descriptions of violations. The story of Karla Manzanares (translated and mediated by Myrén) depicts colonial domination, economic exploitation, sexism and racism.

In this paper I argue that by speaking out, re-establishing a ‘voice’, Karla is also re-inscribing a subordinate position in society. The contradictions inherent in the project of representing the subaltern and simultaneously deconstructing the discourses that constitute the subaltern are evident. As Gayatri Spivak has pointed out, the recovery of the ‘voice’ of the subaltern also entails its erasure, since the mode of representation given in testimonio is no longer located in the space of subalternity but is instead more like a ‘ventriloquist’s dummy’.

Karla’s written destiny stand for something inhuman happening in a country far away. The image of the tragic woman worker capture our fears. Like a safe place to contain horrible things in the world, she becomes a projection of desire for the solution of insoluble conflicts. These stories about Karla and other women workers are emancipatory actions yet they also act as surfaces of projection for desire, disgust and anger. This paper therefore explores the fine balance between mediating testimonios and reconstructing an image of Nicaraguan woman as the Other, as a negative mirror to the idea of white, western (Swedish) women.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to point out variations of practices in the relationship between professionals of service occupations and their clients. The material consists of four openly conducted thematic interviews with male professionals who work in the environment of their clients' homes. The main theoretical approach of this analysisis undertaken with ethnicity in mind. The practices identified aim to throw light on the boundaries between the differing cultures of professionals and their clients. The analytical termsboundary reduction and boundary maintenanceare used in this research.

The two-stage analysis points out different practicesused, in chronological order, during contact between professionals and their clients. This is followed by a statement of the themes which connect, primarily fromthe professional perspective. The results indicate an intimate connection between intercultural and transcultural aspects through the use of cultural transparancy, which is a strategy connecting different roles, aswell as use of loophole tacticsthat afford the possibility of definingspace, place and relationship.

It's illustrated how the professionals operate from "within the structures and worldview" of the client, and this analysis also reveals a glimpse of the potential for cultural changein the meeting between different cultures.

Troll i diskussionsforum: en etnologisk analys av attityder kring olika bruk av virtuell identitet2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the emic use of ”Internet trolls" and trolling behaviour in one specific Internet community. The findings are compared with, and put in relations to the conventional definition of Internet-trolls as individuals who deliberately, typically anonymously, antagonize other users of online common spaces.

A forum dealing with matters of relationship issues in the Swedish online community Message Board of Familjeliv.se, was the subject of field-work that provided the basic empirical material for the research; three comparable threads on the subject of infidelity. These could all be said to contain suspected trolling, and such suspicions were also ascribed participants throughout the discussions. The analysis was undertaken mainly in terms of quality of narrative, performance and interaction.

A comparative method and a genre analysis out of a holistic and functionalistic perspective is used to shed some light on how forum participants organize themselves and steer narratives towards desired outcomes. Author performances, both initially and throughout conversational threads, are explored through holistic analysis.

It is concluded that a broad emic view on trolls and trolling behaviour exists within the Internet community, and that the understanding of trolls can differ between users, forums and within conversational threads. The results are put in relations to and are compared to how trolls are described in Swedish folklore tradition. Parallels are also drawn to fear of and belief in evil.

The analytical concepts ”actual” and ”virtual” worlds, as defined by the anthropologist Tom Boellstorff (2008:18f), are used in this analysis to illustrate how trolling behaviour can be perceived when borders between differing worldviews are crossed and/or when the majority of the active participants of a thread consider a statement incompatible with the dominating interpretation of a given narrative.

As fast as possible rather than well protected Experiences of football clothes2011Inngår i: Culture Unbound. Journal of Current Cultural Research, ISSN 2000-1525, E-ISSN 2000-1525, Vol. 3, s. 83-99Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

With Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenological view that human beings ‘take in’ the world and experience themselves as subjects through their bodies as a starting point, players in both men’s and women’s teams, kit men, purchasing managers, sporting directors, and a coach from Swedish football clubs have been interviewed about their perceptions and experiences of football clothing. Since the body is both a feeling and knowing entity, clothes are seen as components of body techniques, facilitating or restricting body movements in a material way, but also as creators of senses, like lightness and security; in both ways, influencing the knowledge in action that playing football is. In this article, the content of the interviews is discussed in relation to health. When clothes are primarily related to a biomedical view that health means no injuries and illnesses, warm pants and shin guards are mentioned by players, who are rather ambivalent to both, since these garments counteract a feeling of lightness that is connected to the perception of speed. Players want to be fast rather than well protected. If clothes, instead, are interpreted as related to a broad conception of health, including mental, social, and physical components, the relation body–space-in-between–clothes seems to be an important aspect of clothing. Dressed in a sports uniform, unable to choose individual details, the feeling of subjectivity is related to wearing ‘the right-size’ clothes. Also new textile technology, like injury-preventing and speed-increasing tight compression underwear, is perceived by players based on feelings that they are human subjects striving for both bodily and psychological well-being.

Design, craft and culture: Some remarks on production of textile craft in the companies Vävkompaniet and Designbrenner2011Inngår i: Conference Proceedings, papers from the conference Current issues in European Cultural Studies, Linköping University Electronic Press , 2011, s. 81-93Konferansepaper (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

According to anthropological research it is fundamental that aspects of conceptuality and materiality are tied together in handicraft products. Objects have a social history and a cultural biography as well as a material form (Appadurai 1996). Thus analyzing crafting knowledge must involve both looking for bodily competences performed in the meeting with the materials (hand operations, touch, rhythm etc) and mapping cultural meanings on craft. In the ongoing project “Design, craft and culture” this is done through visual/sensory ethnography. Participant observations with video-filming and interviewing are done at Vävkompaniet, a cooperative running handicraft shop, and Design Brenner, private family company for tufting. This paper brings up cultural meanings on craft, expressed by the craft practitioners themselves. What producers in both companies tell about work practices, inspiration, how they relate to the textile tradition etc. is discussed. Their definitions of the concepts craft, art craft, sloyd and design are especially highlighted. This is important since debate regarding craft as material expression versus craft as conceptual art implies different focuses when it comes to what counts as important knowledge - skill in using the proper raw material and technique to make useful products, or skill to materialize ideas in creative ways?

Kulturtanter: En studie i kvinnlig kulturkonsumtion2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is, using the Swedish expression “kulturtant” (cultured lady) as starting point, to understand how and why women consume the products of the culture industry more eagerly than men. The study is using the concepts put forward by Pierre Bourdieu; fields, capital and habitus. It is a qualitative study based on discussions in focus groups, interviews and material gathered through Google Alerts. In the literature this gap between the sexes with regard to the higher consumption on behalf of women has been referred to as the “puzzle” of women´s cultural consumption.

The empirical results show that the women in the study are well aware of what they want to gain by participating in cultural activities like reading, going to concerts, watching plays or going to the movies. There are three main results: The first result is that the women in the study want to participate in activities with peers that respect them. The second result is that the women are eager that their cultural activities should give them durable experiences. The third result can be described as a wish of the women that taking part in cultural activities will help them to develop as human beings, to become better persons. The women have made what can be called a culture journey that in analogy with a class journey may be argued to be non-reversible.

Hunden i kult och religion: på gränsen mellan heligt och profant2009Collection/Antologi (Annet (populærvitenskap, debatt, mm))
    Abstract [en]

    Abstract [en]

After the Second World War an intense period of modern housing construction started in Sweden, which suddenly changed the circumstances of everyday life for a great number of the Swedish population. The tenants were offered apartments equipped with central heating, kitchen with fridge and electric cooker, and bathroom with bathtub. These dwellings gave rise to new experiences for everyone who moved in. By ordering their things and establishing new everyday routines and habits, people appropriated this new and unfamiliar space and made it one with their ongoing life. In this process of spatial organisation and routinisation new borderlines were drawn and new meanings were given to categories such as private-public, indoor-outdoor, home-outer world, us and them. Applying a theoretical approach from phenomenology, based on life story interviews with people who experienced these modern apartments in their capacity as the first tenants, the article elucidates how people through their daily habitual actions, in interaction with things and consociates both delimited and positioned themselves in connection with a wider world. Namely, how theyestablished a relationship between private and public realms, home and not-home, inside and outside, “us” and “them”, and, furthermore, how they transformed an unfamiliar space into a familiar place, a place they could call their own.

    Abstract [en]

This study is concerned with the people who settled permanently near the sawmills of Västernorrland during the expansion of the sawmill industry in the latter half of the 19th century. The basis of, and a prerequisite for this resettlement and the life thus built up was the permanent employment and wages earned by the men at the sawmills. The purpose is to study the pattern of subsistence and the process of place making among the permanent working population in the early sawmill community. The focus is placed on what possibilities and limitations a settlement in the sawmill communities had for the permanently employed sawmill workers and their families - wives and children, and what material and symbolic resources they created and gained access to in order to build up a new life in a place where they had no previous social contacts.

An adaption to the context of the sawmill implied many mental and practical transformations, but at the same time a learning process; they had to learn to handle the diversity of people, commodities and objects in a new physical environment. They had to take place in a space and in a context that was unfamiliar and predictable.

Following themes are discussed in the dissertation: the pattern of subsistence, dwelling and meaning, the relation between the permanent workers population and the sawmill-owner and the process of place making, temporalization and social identification.

The main sources of information consist of autobiographies and recorded life- stories, but even contemporary sources such as newspaper articles, judicial records, estate inventories, official records and reports from county sheriffs, enforcement officers, clergymen and district medical officers. in the rich detail of these texts, in these fragments of life, I find the data upon which I build a narrative by means of a series of interpretations with the aid of different theoretical tools, in collaboration with other interpretations and my own intuition.

    Abstract [en]

Several wind power companies plan to build wind farms in a forest region in the interior of mid Sweden. So far, one wind farm is built and in operation. The projects will incorporate almost 500 wind turbines within an area of over 100 square kilometres, each of them up to 170 meters in height. This means that large industrial estates are emerging "in the middle of wilderness". As a consequence, the wind turbines will be widely visible. Fortunately, it may seem, the area is sparsely populated but people live permanently in the area even though they are few. Approximately 450 persons will be able to see wind turbines from their homes. However, radical changes in the local environment are not a new occurrence for the residents. During the previous century and earlier, the forest has been the object for systematic exploitation by the forest industry. Periodically sections of the forest are clear-cut according to a predetermined schedule. For the residents, this means they will sooner or later witness that the forest visible from their dwellings, at least in part, will be devastated and disappear.

The discussion in the article is limited to the very sight of this visual field, or landscape, i.e., to the material world of forests and mountains that people daily and routinely may see from their homesteads. In this continuous encounter with the surrounding landscape in the place they call their own, people come to know, trust, and relate to it in such a way that they feel a familiarity to it. In other words, the landscape plays an important role in the constitution of their self-identity. This raises the question: what happens to people if this landscape to which they feel so belonged is suddenly changed, or in the worst case, is destroyed?

As part of a recently started fieldwork in the area I plan, among other issues, to explore how people relate to changes in the forest landscape as viewed from the place where they dwell and call home. As previously noted, these changes deal with clear-cut areas, and recently also with wind turbines which appear or will appear as new and strange phenomena in their lifeworld. Drawing on my own sensorial impressions from being there, which also includes conversations with residents in the area, in this article I will pay special attention to how the locals, and I myself, on common existential human grounds, actually experience and visually interact with this alterity.

Following the anthropologist Michael Jackson in his reasoning on how human beings treat and manage new technology (2005:111-141), I will use an existential-phenomenological approach to elucidate how people’s attitude to changes in the physical environment of their dwelling places are linked to human anxieties about the strange, the new and the other. I will argue that the relationship between humans and the surrounding landscape is to be considered social and reciprocal in character, as between subjects. Like the interaction with another person, forest landscapes have the potential to become a part of us or being separated from us, as an alien other.
