    Abstract [en]

This article takes its point of departure in Maurice Halbwachs’ notion of collective

memory, adding the distinction made by Jan Assmann between communicative

and cultural memory, and Alfred Schütz’s notion of communication, understood

here as the sonorous communication of bodily affect. By combining and cross-fertilizing

the concept of memory with that of affective experience, our aim is to take

a new and productive perspective on music’s role as and in cultural memory as

well as the crucial role played by affect attunement. As examples, we use interviews

and observations from an on-going research project on the role of music in

ethnically-based associations in Sweden. In addition, we show how music often

transgresses the categorical distinctions of collective memory. The main questions

we ask are a) to the extent that there is a difference between music serving as a

means for and as content of collective memory (what the memory is “about”), how

can we account for and explain this difference? and b) how does verbally-narrated

content relate to the sound of music when it comes to collective memory?

När-demokrati: Jämlikhet och ledarskap i en gotländsk strandbygd2002Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Leadership in an egalitarian society is a contradiction in terms. Still, a collective has to be vocal in order to gain a bargaining position, and to have its identity reflected and accepted. This is not the least true for a marginalised society like När socken, on the Swedish island of Gotland.

In this farming community of some 550 inhabitants - as on Gotland in general - there are, in the conventional sense of the word, no leaders to perform this presentation. However, the concept of spokesperson is well established. They are locally defined by the use of labels, which in turn are based on descriptions or adjectives like "firebrand", "nay-sayer", "good", "balanced" etc. I propose that this way of defining spokespersons is founded on a strong egalitarian notion and is best described as a semantic field, rather than in hierarchical terms.

Throughout the centuries the geographical and social base for the individual spokesperson has been the farm or ensamgård, i.e. a group of economically, jurally, ritually, as well as spatially linked homesteads. Thus, the socken of När may be described as an example of a house-based society. Successively these ensamgård have given place to more individual farms and these in turn have become linked directly with the socken as such. Presently the socken itself has ceased to exist, at least as a formal unit within the administrative set-up of Sweden. Nevertheless, locally När socken continues to act as the prime key organising symbol. As such, När socken forms the prime focus for the processes of identity formation and the most important forum for passing information, decision-making and implementation.

On the one hand, the individual farms, with links of kinship, neighbourhood, co-operation, and co-ownership, constitute the basis for the formation of social ties within the socken. On the other, such ties are also established by popular participation in an astounding amount of voluntary associations as well as quite a few projects benefiting the community as a whole. These are undertakings that mobilise the absolute majority of the population. These processes have here been summarised as När’s socken-democracy. To the outsider the projects are the most obvious result of localised popular participation. From a local point of view these projects are, apart from being socially and economically significant, primarily regarded as sources of enjoyment - the satisfaction of which is considered in itself the single most important reason to participate in any collective social action.

När socken is successfully represented as a thoroughly dynamic "modern" industrious and thriving community. At the same time it

is regionally regarded as one of the most traditional Gotlandic farming socken with all the connotations of a warm-embracing but also somewhat backward, marginalised community. These rather contradictory rhetoric tools are successfully employed by the spokespersons as they, in unison, represent the community.

However, the spokespersons of När socken are not a homogenous group with a single goal. Local solidarity obscures the fact that the presentation is based on a complex process. One can find strong urges among farmers/farms not only to be good enough (duga) but to excel at the cost of one’s neighbours, there is also a continuos competition to define what is to be the dominant local paradigm.

This way of consciously devising rhetorics and keep a firm line between the community and the outside may be interpreted as a result of an expressed need to come to terms with political and economic, as well as moral marginalisation of the individual and community. Still, these rhetorics do not directly determine the ways in which the community members interact on När or vice versa. Everyday practices, be they socialising or engaging in a project, answer to a felt need to smoothen out everyday community life. The duality of a symbolically constructed rhetoric identity and local practice may be regarded as complementary ways to construct a viable collective identity in an increasingly individualised and globalised world. The combination of rhetoric and practice can be seen as answers to the expressed local concern as how to make life in the margin a feasible proposition.

A time-geographic approach for visualizing the paths of intervention for persons with severe mental illness2017Inngår i: Geografiska Annaler. Series B, Human Geography, ISSN 0435-3684, E-ISSN 1468-0467, Vol. 99, nr 4, s. 341-359Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Living conditions for persons with severe mental illness (SMI) in Sweden have changed dramatically in recent decades, mainly due to the closure of mental hospitals in the 1990s and the subsequent development of community-based interventions. Thereby, people with SMI have experienced care interventions in various forms, which vary according to how the treatment is institutionally organised over the years. There is, however, a lack of knowledge concerning what "care paths" persons with SMI have undergone in this fragmented institutional landscape. In this article we present a time-geography-inspired visualisation method to address this. A set of 437 persons, first diagnosed with psychosis between 2000-2004, were studied over 10 years with regard to their contact with various care institutions. We constructed time-geographic paths of intervention for these individuals and visualised them at an aggregate level. The initial exploration conducted using the proposed visualisation method showed gender and age differences in some respects, but also that the initial periods after the psychosis diagnoses were similar in terms of in-patient care interventions among men and women. The proposed visualisation method is promising and should be further developed for deeper analysis of long-term individual paths of intervention.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis discusses narratives about drunken people. The narratives are orally told as well as collected in the archives and are also written texts about people who are intoxicated. The intent of this research is to examine the social and cultural meaning of narratives about intoxicated people and in which way they reflect normative knowledge and experiences. The narratives are approached from three different angles; narratives that show the contemporary social and cultural order, narratives that maintain the order and narratives that provoke it.

In the thesis I compare differences and similarities in two different times; the early modern peasant society and late modern society. The narratives reflect social hierarchies and they allude to subjects like work, people in power, masculinity and ideas about the way Swedes and “non-Swedes”  drink. Other visible themes refer to the body and the relation between young people and established adults. The so called cautionary narratives tell us about the danger of drinking too much alcohol. Some of the cautionary stories contain warnings that are not addressed to drinking, but to other undesirable acts. The provocative narratives challenge unspoken rules and norms in society. The drinking stories also show freedom from bodily discipline and other social bonds. Certain places and people are associated with intoxication.

The drinking narratives from the old days and nowadays are, in many ways alike, they have the same function through time. They are based on oppositions such as privacy and publicity, culture and nature, bodily functions and intellect. When they are told they indirectly show the normative view of life, by being the opposite.

The positioning and bimodal mediation of the interpreter in a Video Relay Interpreting (VRI) service setting2016Inngår i: Interpreting, ISSN 1384-6647, E-ISSN 1569-982X, Vol. 18, nr 2, s. 198-230Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This study explores the interpreters positioning in a Video Relay Interpreting (VRI) service that offers bimodal mediation between people using Swedish Sign Language (SSL) and people using spoken Swedish. Positioning subsumes the ways in which interpreters orient themselves to the contingencies of the setting on a moment-by-moment basis, in relation to the impact of technology, participants knowledge asymmetries (e.g., prior experience of VRI), their physical separation, and the need for two arenas (visual and auditive). The interpreting is bimodal, each of the two users being in direct contact with the interpreter through a different medium (telephone for one, videophone for the other). Nine excerpts from two calls within the VRI service serve as examples to show how the interpreters positioning emerges dynamically in relation to contingent variables of the setting, such as the initial importance of briefing users on the service, temporary loss of sound and image, the perceived need to inform either user of extralinguistic items, or situational awareness that it is time to conclude the interaction. This new research perspective on VRI can afford a better understanding of its moment-by-moment complexity and specificities, thus helping improve it and train interpreters better for it.

Recommended standards for conducting and reporting ethnopharmacological field studies2018Inngår i: Journal of Ethnopharmacology, ISSN 0378-8741, E-ISSN 1872-7573, Vol. 210, s. 125-132Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Ethnopharmacological relevance: What are the minimum methodological and conceptual requirements for an ethnopharmacological field study? How can the results of ethnopharmacological field studies be reported so that researchers with different backgrounds can draw on the results and develop new research questions and projects? And how should these field data be presented to get accepted in a scientific journal such as the Journal of Ethnopharmacology? The objective of this commentary is to create a reference that covers the basic standards necessary during planning, conducting and reporting of field research.

Materials and methods: We focus on conducting and reporting ethnopharmacological field studies on medicinal plants or materia medico and associated knowledge of a specific people or region. The article highlights the most frequent problems and pitfalls, and draws on published literature, fieldwork experience, and extensive insights from peer-review of field studies.

Results: Research needs to be ethical and legal, and follow local and national regulations. Primary ethnopharmacological field data need to be collected and presented in a transparent and comprehensible way. In short this includes: 1) Relevant and concise research questions, 2) Thorough literature study encompassing all available information on the study site from different disciplines, 3) Appropriate methods to answer the research questions, 4) Proper plant use documentation, unambiguously linked to voucher specimens, and 5) Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the collected data, the latter relying on use-reports as basic units.

Conclusion: Although not exhaustive, we provide an overview of the necessary main issues to consider for field research and data reporting including a list of minimal standards and recommendations for best practices. For methodological details and how to correctly apply specific methods, we refer to further reading of suggested textbooks and methods manuals.

    Abstract [en]

“Fröknarna von Pahlen”, is a series of novels written by the author Agnes von Krusenstjerna. Especially the fourth and fifth parts, published in 1933, raised questions about sexuality, especially about what was conceived as perverse and provoking descriptions. “Fröknarna von Pahlen” became a part of heated debates about what is acceptable to write about. How can the so called Pahlen feud be understood from an intersectional perspective, and from a focus on values, and by discussing imagined communities? The purpose is to find out what is going on in these debates. Six different values are being pointed out; art and skill, truth, freedom of speech and freedom of the press, the value in the young, the value in female perspectives, and moral values. There is a number of knot points tied to these values, and differentiating processes such as sex, class, age, ethnicity, religion etc. are all intertwined in these debates. From an intersectional understanding, none of these processes are more primal than another. The knot points are both of an emotional nature and thematic. The individual voices that emerge in the feud are named small narratives, and the more intersubjective narratives are called grand narratives. These narratives are being investigated rhetorically; for instance how some stories can appear more as truths than others, and it is analyzed how they separate people in groups and create hierarchies. They are also being seen from an emotional perspective; how individual feelings are a part of emotions, larger contexts and meaning coherences. These feelings are also understood as actions. Throughout the investigation there is a hermeneutic will to make things intelligible, and respect and point out the many different perspectives. This is being made in a cultural relativistic attempt. By focusing on imagined communities, different comradeships and groups in the feud can be pointed out. People can consider themselves parts of these groups, but they can also, more or less involuntarily, be considered as parts of these groups. In the writers opinion, the most important question is how “extreme” sexual descriptions an author is allowed to bring forth.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This article is based on ethnographic fieldwork done with a group of 14 to 16 year-old girls in a medium sized Swedish town. The study aimed to investigate the relationship between everyday music use and gender, ethnicity and sexuality. The question posed here is: "What negotiations take place when the girls discuss their favorite music and artists?" Research in response to this question shows that the identity work of negotiating how to be a teenage girl often relates to popular culture. The sample focuses on girls from Swedish, Bosnian, Turkish and Syrian backgrounds. In this article I report on the local ideas about gender and ethnicity claimed by the girls to influence their discussion of music, dress and behavior, as well as the desires that I argue structure such discussion. This research supports contemporary findings that mainstream popular music has cultural and social significance in young girls' lives.
