Vi bestämmer över vårt barns utbildning: En systematisk litteraturstudie gällande bestämmanderätten till barns utbildning och förflyttningen till friskolor2011Student paper other, 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

In today’s history teaching in Sweden, role-play and historical re-enactment receive little

attention. Even though many students find history as a subject boring and irrelevant, very

little is done to improve the mode of teaching. My theses is that this could be done by

presenting new ways of teaching and at the same time find a way to make more students

interested in history. The main aim is to investigate if there are ways to offer students an

experience of history by carrying out different interactive exercises with a touch of roleplay

and historical recreation. In this essay, three exercises of that type have been

constructed based on how historical role-plays have been used at museums and historical

centres, the opinions of people who are engaged in re-enactment and living history, and

on the curriculum for the Swedish upper level secondary school.

The three exercises (a role-play exercise, a lecture by an invited re-enactor, and a theme

week) have been analysed by four teachers who teach at upper level secondary school

and high school. They responded very positively to the exercises, and judged the

exercises to be fully viable in a classroom context. In conclusion, there are ways to

implement re-enactment and role-play in history education to make the teaching more

varied and interesting for the pupils. I argue that history is something you have to

experience if you are to understand its full extent.

„As long as we can cry about the misery we can joke about it too“: An intersectional and queer theoretical analysis of a Swedish female-fronted humor series2015Student paper other, 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this thesis is to use intersectional queer theoretical analysis in order to investigate if the Swedish female-fronted humor series "Mia och Klara" can be understood as feminist. Through semiotic analysis of discourses in the material, the appearance and non-appearance of different social location and the portrayal of these can be established. The social location-analysis coupled with the Bechdel test will show us that the show can be perceived as female-focused but that certain characters are paradoxical and challenge the primacy of the male gaze through storyline and camera angles. The TV-series can to the most part be seen as a liberal- and post-feminist storyline that reinforces and re-affirms a white, Swedish, femininity project.

Can mindfulness and nostalgia raise adolescents’ happiness and subjective well-being?: A quantitative study on the effects of using nostalgia and mindfulness as methods to raise happiness and subjective well-being amongst adolescents.2015Student paper other, 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Worldwide, 450 million people are estimated to have a mental health problem. Therefore this study set out with the aim to fill the gap in research on how to raise happiness and subjective well-being amongst adolescents. The sample of the study consisted of 90 students ranging from 16 - 19 years of age. They were randomly assigned to one of two methods; BPS (Best Personal Self) or nostalgia. Each group was then given varying instructions on a task they would perform on a daily basis, with tests taken on the first and last day of the study. The tests consisted of questions from the PANAS (Positive and Negative Affect Scale) and the SWLS (Satisfaction with Life Scale), which would determine the different methods short- and long-term effect on the participants happiness and subjective well-being. A control group was used to compare the results of the test groups. The results indicated nostalgia as being the most effective way to raise short-term well-being amongst adolescents, which raised interesting questions for future studies.

An analysis of Samoan reaction to The Orator (O Le Tulafale)’s Fāgogo defining Samoan identity2013Student paper otherOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The Orator (O Le Tulafale) was promoted as the first Samoan language film shot in Samoa with a Samoan cast and crew. Written and directed by Samoan filmmaker Tusi Tamasese, the film succeeded at several of the movie industry’s prestigious festivals. The Orator (O Le Tulafale) is about an outcast family of a dwarf (Saili), his wife and her teenage daughter. As the main protagonist, Saili battles to overcome his fears to become a chief to save his family and land. The film’s themes are courage, love, honour , as well as hypocrisy, violence, and discrimination. A backlash by Samoans was predicted ; however, the opposite occurred. This raised the following questions: first, what is it about the film causing this reaction? It is a 106 -minute film shot in Samoa about Samoans and the Samoan culture . D espite promotional claims about the film , there have been Samoan -produced films in Samoa . Secondly, to what are Samoans really responding? Is it 1) just to the film because it is about Samoa, or 2) are they responding to themselves , and how they reacted during the act of watching the film? This implies levels of reactions in the act of watching, and examining the dominant level of response is important. To explore this, t he Samoan story telling technique of Fāgogo was used to analyse the film’s narration and narrative techniques. R. Allen’s (1993, 1997) concept of projected illusion was employed to discuss the relationship between Samoans and the film developed during the act of watching. An examination of the term Samoan and a description of the framework of Fa’a Samoa (Samoan culture) were provided. Also included were discussions of memory and its impact on Samoan cultural identity. The analysis indicated that The Orator (O Le Tulafale) acted as a memory prompt through which Samoans recalled memories confirming and defining cultural bonds. These memories constituted the essence of being Samoan. These memories were awakened, and shared as oral histories as fāgogo. The receivers appeared to interpret the shared memories to create their own memories and stories to suit their contexts, according to Facebook postings. An interpretation is that the organic sharing of memories as fā gogo created a global definition of Samoan that Samoans internationally claimed.
