    HIV is a real and present problem currently facing Southern and Eastern Africa. Previous research has shown how gender inequality and religion both play a central role in explaining the prevalence of HIV and AIDS. Southern and Eastern Africa has a highly religious population, and since religious communities play an important role in people’s lives, these communities could have the potential to mitigate the currently ongoing HIV epidemic. Youths in urban areas are a key group demographic in stopping the spread of HIV. Rwanda have worked extensively with gender equality and empowering women.

    Several studies have examined gender norms in Southern and Eastern Africa, especially in areas with a high HIV-prevalence. However, there is a lack of research examining social structures related to masculinity and femininity among religious urban youth. This study aims to expand our understanding of the gender norms of Christian urban youths in Southern and Eastern Africa, and how the present of the harmful gender norms affects the spread of HIV within this demographic. Urban youths are one of the groups that most affected by HIV in Southern and Eastern Africa, which is why this study relies on a field study is based on qualitative interviews among people between the ages of 18-30 living in Rwanda’s capital Kigali. Results indicate that while young women have begun to challenge the gendered norms attributed to them, and are increasingly encouraged to do so, young men remained confined to more traditional gender norms. Strong masculine gender norms are still present and these norms have a negative impact on health seeking behavior; thus, the spread of HIV is likely to here be a gendered process.

    Abstract [en]

    Since the second half of the 20th century the Philippines have supplied the world with migrant workers. Today, almost one tenth of the population is residing abroad. Labour migration has become an important source of revenue to both state and private actors through remittances, for the Philippines, and a source of cheap labour battling labour shortage, in the receiving countries. Today, the global labour market is a distinct and important part of what we call globalisation. This is portrayed in this thesis through the lens of Philippine-Korean labour migration.

    The purpose of this thesis is to illustrate the emergence of migrants as a commodity for export, the institutionalised creation of migrants, the normalisation of labour migration, and containment of migrants through legal and spatial constraints, in Manila and in Seoul.

    This thesis look at the ways in which labour migration, as an economic policy, is internalised and transformed into a culture of migration. I argue that the effects of a culture of migration is felt not just by the labour migrants themselves, but also by their families and by the Philippines as a whole. As such, the reliance on remittances as a source of income has transformed domestic and global infrastructures as well as norms and social behaviour. Moreover, this thesis aims to add to the discussion on migration and remittances by exploring social dimensions and consequences of the globalisation of the labour market.

    Abstract [en]

    What has happened with the perception that Europeans have of their relationship with the European Union through the years? Is it possible to find some analogies between present times and international relations in the XIX century Europe?

    This work tries to study the period comprehended between the Congress of Vienna in 1815 and the period that ended up in World War I in order to search for behavioural and ideological patterns similar to those of the development of the European Union as we have known it.

    The thesis stands for the idea of that finding similarities and interconnections between the past of European nations may be a help to predict the proper way to integrate the different citizenries of current European countries under a common identity of shared values.

    Alpsten, M. 2016. Athenaeus The learned banqueters. A study of the purpose and content from a beverage perspective

    The objective of this paper is to explore the purpose or purposes with which the Greek author Athenaeus wrote his extensive work, The Learned Banqueters. The basis for this study is a survey of the different beverages, i.e. wine, water, milk, blood, beer and gruel, Athenaeus writes about in his work. The objective of the thesis is also to lift up what Athenaeus writes about these drinks. The Athenaeus text has been closed read (close reading) and various questions were posed to the text, a number of structural concepts have been used, and these, together with the above questions, are a good way to reveal Athenaeus’ purpose. The results have shown that Athenaeus probably wanted to write an encyclopedia, for his books show a strong desire to inform the reader about various phenomena and things. But it was no ordinary reference book he wrote but a reference book about Greek customs and traditions. His purpose was that in the Roman time he lived in influencing people to return to a, for him, remote but magnificent ancient Greece.

    Abstract [en]

    Colombia has been characterized by an internal armed conflict since the 1960s where several violations of the human rights have followed. Threats and violence against human rights defenders is one example and this is directed toward both men and women in an attempt to deter these brave individuals from continuing their work.

    This thesis focuses on the commitment of women’s human rights defenders in Colombia. Numerous international human rights organizations and institutions claim that women are a particularly vulnerable group, which is why I choose to focus on this group. Starting from different feminist theories and with regard to intersectional perspectives, I want to find out: What motivates women in Colombia to defend women’s human rights? Do they pursue any specifically important issues? How do they handle the obstacles they face in their work? These questions are posed in order to find out how these women’s human rights defenders work with human rights in relation to the obstacles that they face. I want to find out what strategies they use to handle the obstacles that they are faced with. The material of the thesis mostly consists of semi-structured interviews with women from domestic women’s human rights organizations in the capital of Colombia, Bogotá.

    The results show that women’s human rights defenders incentive is individual and cannot be too generalized. According to the common components in the women’s answers they are motivated by the need to fight injustices, mainly social- and political injustices in relation to being a woman and violations within the armed conflict. They are empowered to continue their work through each other, through the processes and the determination to not give up. There are many specifically important issues, for example land rights, gender-based violence and rights of the ethnic minorities. Some of these rights are even said to be today’s biggest challenge for the country. The women’s human right defenders handle the obstacles to their work through not giving up until the injustices are fought and through giving each other hope. They refuse to let the perpetrators win.

    Abstract [en]

    The thesis aims at analyzing the responsibility corporations, which are extracting valuable minerals from conflict risk and conflict affected areas, have in terms of respecting human rights. The thesis analyzes corporate responsibility mostly from a moral but also a legal perspective. In terms of the moral responsibility, the thesis has strategically chosen to examine the moral responsibility of corporations to respect human rights through the moral responsibility of their employees. The stance, that the thesis launches, is that the moral responsibility of the employees as individuals does transcend upon corporations making the business enterprise responsible for respecting human rights. The legal obligation of corporations in this matter is referred to domestic court decisions, which have ruled that corporations through business decisions have violated the human rights of affected individuals. 

    The theoretical framework is based on the principle of due diligence, which has proven to be crucial when incorporating management policies and risk-assessment mechanisms within the structure of corporations. Through the analysis of the Kimberley Certification Scheme, which is a state-to-state agreement with the aim to hinder conflict-diamonds from entering into the international market, a lack of due diligence framework suitable for corporations has been revealed. The scheme is flawed as it does not provide corporations extracting diamonds from conflict risk and conflict affected areas with a due diligence framework. The thesis draws the conclusion that corporations are both morally and legally responsible to respect human rights. In addition, the Kimberley Certification Scheme is a step to hinder conflict diamonds from entering into the international market. However, the scheme must be re-examined and elaborated into a framework where due diligence is included. These measures will allow corporations to operate with clear guidelines on how to extract valuable minerals in conflict risk and conflict affected areas whilst performing due diligence. Such an adjustment will allow corporations to avoid either directly or indirectly to finance actions, which could lead to human rights abuses.

    The emotional part of a museum experience is being debated and there is research pointing towards the affective part of learning. The purpose of this study is to examine how museum pedagogues reason about the usage of affective learning in their work and to investigate whether they consider affective pedagogy is a part of their work or not. Furthermore how they consider themselves working, or not working, with feelings in their pedagogy.

    A key factor in this study has been to work interdisciplinary with both museum pedagogy and social science with theoretical perspectives of feelings such as happiness, sadness, anger, disgust and fear, and with theories such as Feelings & materiality and Pedagogy of Feeling. Methodologically a qualitative interview study museum pedagogues have been used together with observation of four Swedish state- and country museums.

    In this thesis it is shown that the interviewed museum pedagogues indeed have acknowledged the fact that the museum is an affective place, but the interviewed had different way of make use of feelings. They all agree on the fact that feelings can support the learning process, and that all the different feelings have their own effect on learning. Also that the museum pedagogues have some influence on the feeling that the exhibitions are to emit, which could be used in the pedagogues favor if the exhibition consists of hard and problematic feelings. However, in contrast to this it seems that few of the museum pedagogues discuss the affective influence of a upcoming exhibition or program, or evaluate a project in what feeling the visitors experienced during the visit.

    This thesis examines how images are used and evaluated in a Swedish archival context. Images as of today are very common in society. They are nearly everywhere, particularly in our phones and computers. Therefore the written word is slowly losing it's sovereignty as a carrier of information. With this background the study examines if the images role also have changed in an archival setting.

    The following work is a qualitative research study that examines three Swedish archives: the Regional State Archive in Uppsala, Swedish Labour Movement's Archives and Library in Stockholm and the Centre for Business History in Stockholm. Furthermore the study examines how the institutions organize images and how they make them accessible for the public. It also examines what role the image play as a carrier of information in the archive. In more general terms the study also investigates what function the image can have for people in society. The comparison of the archival institutions is a methodological foundation for this study. Semi- structured interviews were conducted with archivists from the three institutions and works as the main source. For the analysis this study uses document theory and a few concepts derived from Terry Cook's archival theory, namely evidence, memory, identity and community.

    In terms with the previous research made on the subject this study comes to the result that images have different terms for archiving than other materials, most specifically papers documents. The examined archival institutions are today using the same tools for organizing images as they use for other documents. This can have negative effects on the ability the image has as a carrier of information. In the long run this could cause the image to become a marginalized part of the archive as a whole.

    The conclusion this mater's thesis presents is that the image has a potential as a source of information. Especially for groups that aren't previously represented in the archive through traditional paper documents. The image may therefore contribute to the archival pluralism and diversity, as long as the images are treated with the terms they demand as an archival document.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis focuses on the cooperation of the archive and the school. The theoretical framework is socio-cultural perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at the archives. I have studied three different archives which, in cooperation with the school, conduct archival education. In addition to the interviews I have participated in two observations. The research found that there was a great interest in the school to participate in the archive's educational work. Factors such as stress for the teachers and too few archive educational resources adversely affect the archive education mission. The views look different, but the goal is to present archives to the students and provide a positive experience. The fact that archives are to be regarded as an obvious place of visit, was the democratic right of citizens, and that information is being discussed what the archives want to convey to archive education. The archival material used by the archives has a clear link with the curricula and places great emphasis on teaching source criticism.

    Svensk kulturarvspolitik arbetar utifrån visionen för kulturmiljöarbetet 2030 att ”alla, oavsett bakgrund, ska kunna göra anspråk på vårt gemensamma kulturarv”. Vad har föranlett till den här visionen och hur har det sett ut innan? Den här studien syftar till att undersöka hur och om retoriken i det talade språket och den skrivna texten uttrycker en exkluderande eller inkluderande syn på nationellt kulturarv kopplat till identitet.  Hur har synen på nationellt kulturarv sett ut och finns det en ”vi” och ”den Andre”– struktur i diskursen?

    Källmaterialet består av tre olika kultur- och kulturarvspropositioner under åren 1996, 2009 och 2016. Det kompletteras med utvalda intervjuer och offentliga tal från tre olika kulturministrar under samma år: Marita Ulvskog, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth och Alice Bah Kuhnke. Metoden för studien har varit kritisk diskursanalys hämtad från Norman Fairclough. Resultatet av undersökningen diskuteras med begrepp hämtade från postkolonial teori, främst Edward Said och Homi K. Bhabha.

    This study analyzes the major conflict drivers behind an inter-ethnic conflict in South Sudan between the Murle and Lou Nuer people groups in 2011 and 2012. It will begin with the historical context of the current conflict. Myriad theories exist as to the causes of conflict, but there is no defined method to analyze each and every context. The second step of this paper will be to examine three different theoretical frameworks- political, economic and social. Conflicts are driven by multiple causes, and in this case various types of causes as well. Different perspectives on the reasons behind conflict must be analyzed, and in particular how they interact and influence each other. The final task will be to consider the significance of various political, economic and social conflict drivers in the particular context of the Lou Nuer and Murle of Jonglei State, South Sudan.

    The research was carried out over a period of eight months in South Sudan and during the time period both sides continued to carry out major attacks. It is recognized that studying an ongoing conflict is ambitious as conflicts are not static and continually change. However, multiple approaches are being attempted to end the fighting between the Murle and Lou Nuer while not fully understanding all the causes behind the conflict. This paper intends to expand humanitarian comprehension on the topic and encourage parties involved in the peace process to implement programs that counteract the conflict drivers.

    The women movement in Egypt played an important role within the revolution in 2011 and still do in the supplementary work proceeding right now. It has also been discussed that the eighteen days on the Tahrir Square created a utopian mini-society and that in comparison with everyday life gender equality existed.

    However after the first democratic election 2011/2012 only two per cent of the parliament’s members were women. And within the delegation that developed Egypt’s new constitution only seven in a group of one hundred participants were women. In November 2012 several women demonstrators also got raped in demonstrations against the new constitution.

    Many people started to talk about a backlash for women’s rights in Egypt. At the same time Egypt have a quite strong women movement. The purpose of this journalistic work is therefore to investigate how women organizations in Cairo after the revolution is working and proceeding with gender issues. How is their every day life and what kind of challenges are they now facing?

    And the women movement in Cairo is changing. New initiatives and organizations are now starting. Young volunteers working on the ground against sexual assault within the demonstrations and sexual harassment on the streets is creating a new scene within the women movement in Cairo, who traditionally primarily have worked for advocacy change and within already existing power structures in the Egyptian society.

    This journalistic work is presented in four in-depth articles where three women rights activists within three women rights organizations and initiatives are the leading characters.

    The starting point of this study is a letter to the Swedish Research Council which maintained the difficulty to reconcile chemistry with open access. Previous studies show that when other sciences is increasing in both the deposition rate and selection of OA journals, there is a lull in chemistry. The purpose of the master thesis is to gain an understanding of chemists reluctance to open access in the light of the implementation of Chalmers' mandating open access policy and through field theoretical perspectives understand why. The survey is conducted with a qualitative approach and the empirical data consist of interview material from nine interviews that took place at Chalmers Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The interviews show that chemists believe that the idea of open access is certainly sympathetic but incompatible with the chemical sciences. It is believed that the discipline´s traditions, practice and publishing culture as well as opportunities for career differs from other sciences, including what open access is concerned. This uniqueness has not been taken into account in the implementation of OA policies of funding agencies and universities, according to the informants.

    Evaluations of other universities implementations of open acces policies have identified success factors like support, legal advice and hands-on help in self-archiving. According to the results of this thesis, functionality and infrastructure appears to be less significant if university management and funders does not establish an atmosphere of alliance and thus undermines confidence in the policy and its proponents. The study confirms the importance of the researchers feel invited and involved in the process of change.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the age-related norms which control the process of making public archives accessible. It focuses on physical access and visitors at the physical archival institutions. More specifically, it examines which groups are not included in the archival institutions’ target groups and why this is the case, the archival employees’ views on visitors’ needs and the archival institutions’ action space regarding the process of making archives accessible.

    The theoretical framework for this thesis is a combination of a norm critical and an intersectional perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at archival institutions. Two different archival institutions have been examined, which are both departments of public authorities.

    The main result of the thesis is that there exist normative systems within the archival institutions which favour elderly people and people within the academic world. Age also matters less for people within the academic world. Accordingly, people outside of these groups can be regarded as non-target groups. Factors which can contribute to exclusion are also non-western origin and to be occupied at daytime. The explanations to why some groups are excluded are lack of resources and knowledge, a reactive approach, and the institutions’ opening hours. Regarding visitors’ needs, many visitors need help searching for material and formulating their needs, which they can also expect to be helped with. Needs which the archival employees can not satisfy are extensive reading of handwriting or carrying out research for the visitor. In general, it seems that people within the archival institutions’ target groups are more likely to get the exact help they need. The archival employees have a relatively great action space when it comes to making archives accessible, as the policy documents don’t mention this activity in detail.

    Abstract [en]

    With the purpose to investigate policies within long-term preservation of digital media in the modern world of Open Access institutional repository, this two year's master thesis was conducted through a qualitative study with quantitative overtures. The main objectives of this thesis centre on the criteria for long-term digital preservation, preservation in relation to institutional repositories, the issues cropping up within the field of institutional repositories, and the essential components of a preservation policy.

    The theoretical framework is constructed around a model based upon scholarly communication, with its aspects of dissemination, acquisition, preservation, discovery and access, and with the facet of preservation at its centre. The methodology of this study is cued to content analysis and its in-depth investigative process, which was conducted on a sample of ten preservation policies within Open Access institutional repositories that were compared to a standardised expert set of policy categorisation.

    The results show that a perfect preservation policy does not appear to exist in the current world, based exclusively on the selected sample. This gives a strong indication of a need for further research within the field of Open Access institutional repositories preservation policies.

    Abstract [en]

    The collapse of the Spanish real-estate market in 2007-8, and the colossal destruction of jobs it provoked, put an abrupt end to a decade-long model of growth, which was based on the construction and tourism industries as its primary motors as well as on the massive indebtedness of the labouring masses. In the severe economic downturn that ensued, a social conflict appeared: on the one side, the many indebted people forming the movement of the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca (PAH) and, on the other side, the financial industry. This study offers an ethnographic account of the aforementioned conflict as it unfolds in the precarious reality of Barcelona and Santa Coloma de Gramenet, with a particular emphasis on the experience and struggle of the affected persons. The argument advanced is that the main predicament of the debt conflict is the subordination of life processes to the imperatives of financial accumulation; a situation enabled by a specific constellation of forces, involving the successive governments of Spain, the financial elite, the police, and the courts.

    This thesis examines the Nation Building process in South Africa after the demise of Apartheid era. It has primarily analysed, assessed and evaluated the performances of ANC Governments under Mandela, Mbeki and Zuma from the perspective of Nation Building process in the country. The study throws light on the different factors that have been affecting the Nation Building process in South Africa. This study explores a brief historical analysis by uncovering the conditions faced by the South African society during Apartheid era, ethnicity and race relations, how did apartheid programme the collective psyche of the people of the land, its implications in the Post-Apartheid phase of the country and the outcomes affecting the integration process of the segregated society. This work has highlighted the dream of the founding fathers in the Nation Building of South Africa, making of the constitution and its provisions supporting a consociational democratic culture favourable for the Nation Building process. At the same time the study also presents how ethnic struggle for domination in party politics affected the idea of Nation Building, Xhosa Zulu tussle, corruption, nepotism, injustice, inequalities, political repression, human rights abuses, police brutality, extra constitutional measures taken by law enforcing agencies and political institutes, disgruntled and dissatisfied masses all contributed in the creation of a chaotic environment not conducive for the Nation Building process.

    There are three main purposes for this thesis; the first is to distinguish the possible violations that can occur in time of natural disasters. The second is to analyze if there is a correlation between political systems and how the effected country handles the aftermath of a natural disaster. The third purpose is to determine the role of the global community and what responsibility lies with them. The issue is often that the aid becomes the main object for discussion and analysis, but the focus rarely shifts to the effected State. Therefore the focus in this essay is the political system and how they cope with the human rights violations that can occur in a time of natural disaster. The questions are; what human rights are at risk of being violated during a natural disaster? What general impact do the different political systems have on how they handle the human rights violations that arises? In which ways can other countries assist in a natural disaster and what responsibility do the global communities have?To be able to discuss human rights, it is necessary to know one perspective of how they came to be. For this purpose, this thesis will explain human rights from the perspectives of Jack Donnelly and Ronald Dworkin. They speak about rights and obligations; Donnelly means to say that all rights are universal and Dworkin put rights in a perspective of equal respect and concern. Some of the rights violated in the aftermath of the natural disaster were the right to a family life, the right to personal security and the right to ones property.

    When analyzing the political systems and the responsibility of the world in the consequences of a natural disaster, I applied Ulla Erikson-Zeterqvists explanation of early institutional theory that implies tree conditions that make an organization successful. The first condition is where the administrative control lays, second the commitment of grassroots organizations and third, the participation of the local community. In this analysis the conclusion is that the political system is not the main factor in upholding human rights. The main factor is the stability of the State and what the State is willing to do for its citizens. The stability of the States determines the standard for what human rights mean and how the aid is structured. If the State is corrupted it makes it harder for the global community to assist. The countries history affects their behavior and in a time of crisis, the States true commitment is shown.

    Abstract [en]

    This study examines the cultural place and status of video and computer games in the Swedish public library. Using works on popular culture and the theories of Pierre Bourdieu, this study employs quantitative methods, as well as textual analysis, to analyze the results of an online questionnaire with 19 questions focusing on selection criteria, shelf placement, perceived competence, as well as reasoning for having or not having these games in the library. 286 out of the 440 libraries contacted is participating in the study, and the libraries consist exclusively of public libraries in Sweden that are found in the database of the Royal Library.

    The results of this study show that a larger number of libraries than previously indicated have started to provide electronic games to their patrons. At the same time, patterns in the data and comments suggests that these games in many cases still do not enjoy the same level of cultural recognition as other media. Indicative of this is the way most libraries seem to focus on the medium being exclusively for their young patrons, with seem-ingly very little in the way of investment for adults. Also relevant is selection process being highly influenced by the type and amount of violence in the games, regardless of the level of competence and knowledge about games among library staff. These findings relate to and expand upon previous studies regarding electronic games, cul-ture and the public library. This study constitutes a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this study is, using the Swedish expression “kulturtant” (cultured lady) as starting point, to understand how and why women consume the products of the culture industry more eagerly than men. The study is using the concepts put forward by Pierre Bourdieu; fields, capital and habitus. It is a qualitative study based on discussions in focus groups, interviews and material gathered through Google Alerts. In the literature this gap between the sexes with regard to the higher consumption on behalf of women has been referred to as the “puzzle” of women´s cultural consumption.

    The empirical results show that the women in the study are well aware of what they want to gain by participating in cultural activities like reading, going to concerts, watching plays or going to the movies. There are three main results: The first result is that the women in the study want to participate in activities with peers that respect them. The second result is that the women are eager that their cultural activities should give them durable experiences. The third result can be described as a wish of the women that taking part in cultural activities will help them to develop as human beings, to become better persons. The women have made what can be called a culture journey that in analogy with a class journey may be argued to be non-reversible.

    This two years master’s thesis takes interest in the concept of marketing related to the Children’s Library. The purposes have been to investigate the perception of marketing among a few librarians working at the Children’s Library in the Swedish region of Halland and further to analyse their perception of marketing in the daily work at the library. Eventually to analyse the consequences of these librarians approach to marketing related to their perception of the library’s mission. The Regional aspect of the survey is due to the 2011 celebrated report about marketing the library.

    The theoretical framework is twofold, the marketing mix is used to understand what at the library could be used in marketing. The work of the Danish scholars Henrik Jochumsen och Casper Hvenegaard Rasmussen are used to understand the different functions of the library. Their theory present the library’s four different func-tions illustrated as "spaces". The spaces are the inspiration space, the learning space, the meeting space and the performative space. By those means the librarians perception of marketing in their everyday work have been analysed. The method used is qualitative, semi-structured interviews.

    Results show that the majority of the librarians preferred the vague word "visibility" to marketing. The con-cept of marketing was more seen as something communicated to users by posters and leaflets. When asked about interpersonal relations, accessibility and communication the librarians saw these concepts as important thought not obviously related to marketing. The spaces of inspiration and performance were more strongly connected to marketing than the learning space and meeting space. There is an urgent need to discuss the concept of market-ing in relation to the role of the library. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Studies.

    “One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman,” Simone de Beauvoir once famously said presenting the hypothesis that the idea of a woman, the female identity, is constructed as a reflection of its context. The purpose of this paper is to discover one aspect of this construction by exploring the identity development and expression of five young women, in the context of Saudi Arabia, to theorize about how they construct their ego identity and sense of self in the context in which they exist.

    Though in-depth conversations it is established how the women view themselves and their expression. This material is then reflected upon through the prism of defining identity and the identity status’ as explored by Eric Erikson and James Marcia as to create a further understanding of the women’s creation of self.

    The conclusion is that young women in Saudi Arabia construct their identity through negotiation. Faced with blurred lines of personal, religious and national identity, negotiation is unavoidable in the complex structure in which the women’s expression and development takes place.

    Abstract [en]

    The purpose of this essay was first and foremost to find out the problems that exist around user education in a university library and the opportunities that exist for university librarians to improve their work with students. My method of use was qualitative and more precise qualitative interviews. By interviewing five teaching librarians with five different subject specializations, I wanted to get an an-swer to what they teach when they meet the students and how they view their teaching. Responses resulted then in an analysis using Christine Bruce's theory of information literacy and Carol C. Kuhlthaus theory of librarian roles and her theory of information retrieval process. In the survey and analysis section, I describe informants' background, teaching approach, their thoughts about education and the problems and opportunities they see with user education. What I mainly discuss in my analysis is the importance of understanding the information retrieval process, that IT competence is not the same as information literacy and the role university librarians can take in the information retrieval process. The survey results show, among other things, that many students do not see the benefits of user education, the contact between the department and the library is dependent on personal relationships and that teaching librarians (my informants) are ill-informed about students' prior knowledge. In the final discussion, focused on problems and opportunities, I write about how education could be more interesting if librarians were able to strengthen their educational foundation and thus self-esteem in situation surrounding teaching. I also write about the contact between the department and the library, how it needs to be strengthen so that it does not rely on personal relationships. Through an improved contact librarians would also be a more natural part of stu-dents' education. This is a two years master’s thesis.

    For centuries the Swedish landscape has been assessed on account of its natural and cultural heritage. The 20th century however, marks an especially dynamic period of preservation and conservation acts, due to the extensive transformation of natural habitats, cultural scenery, space and society in the wake of modernity. Over the course of this period the motifs and values embodied in the landscape's natural and cultural heritage undergo significant changes, as the landscape perception of aniquarians and environmental preservationists shifts. This thesis is concerned with how the Swedish landscape has been viewed and taken in use by these subjects to materialize ideas of nature, culture and heritage over the course of the 20th century. Its inquiry is geographical and historical. By studying the transformation of the spatial setting, and the agenda of agencies of natural and cultural heritage, these perspectives merge to create a synthesis, bringing new insights to the relations between natural and cultural heritage, antiquarians, conservationists and the landscape and last – but not least – the historically constructed spatial realms of nature and culture in the Swedish landscape.

    Abstract [en]

    The focus of this study is to examine the aesthetics due to a new residential area, Glasberga Sjöstad, located in the outskirts of Södertälje. During the first construction process in the housing estate, some of the buildings appeared not familiar to the Swedish norm, and they did not fit into the concept Garden City, “trädgårdsstaden”. The main research question is to investigate the aesthetics and planning ideals according to the forming of Glasberga Sjöstad and the study focus on the lack of consistency between the vision and the everyday-reality. Another important starting-point is questions about ethnic segregation and aspects of power relations between a majority and a minority in the society. Former research points at causal factors as socioeconomic imbalances and class-aspects as important to understand the ethnic- and race segregated Swedish society, and the main research question in this study, is to add a focus on the aesthetics as an important aspect and more, to pay attention to the middleclass-citizens. The study is built upon in-depth interviews with residents in Glasberga Sjöstad and analyses of planning documents and aesthetic guidelines due to the construction process. The material shows that the aesthetic guidelines are built upon former ideals and it also shows that the inhabitant of Glasberga pay less attentions to the aesthetics of the houses, than to the social relations with their neighbours. The outcome of this study proposes the aesthetics as an important matter in planning and power practices, and proposes for a more open-minded way to embrace and include cultural diversity.

    South Africa is one of the most affected country by the HIV/AIDS epidemic worldwide. Literary responses gave voice to the impact and perception of HIV/AIDS epidemic. The present thesis is focused on the creative response to HIV/AIDS by a sample of three selected South African novels

    Welcome to Our Hillbrow, Beauty’s Gift, and The Reactive. By using an interdisciplinary approach, the representation and the experience of HIV/AIDS, and the meanings associated to the disease as described in the novels are analysed. Welcome to Our Hillbrow presents the prejudice and myths around HIV/AIDS, Beauty’s Gift is focused on female empowerment against risky masculinity, and The Reactive is a coming-of-age novel offering an introspective insight into HIV-positive status. Written in different times between 2001 and 2014, and by black authors of different generations, the novels are inscribed in the socio-cultural context of South Africa. With this sample of selected fiction, it is possible to observe a complex scenario on HIV/AIDS and a shift in the focus on HIV/AIDS perception: from stigma and mortality, to activism and prevention, to the individual co-existence with a manageable chronic condition. The novels showed the nuances of the meanings associated to HIV/AIDS, and their specific relation to the socio-cultural determinants of the disease (stigma, misinformation, rural-urban relation, gender power structure, accessibility to treatment). The present work intends to contribute to the understanding of HIV/AIDS by the perspective of creative voices which have the ability to disclose meaning and signification to the experience of suffering due to the disease.

    The aim of this two-year master´s thesis is to examine the opinion on bibliotherapy in Sweden of some potential bibliotherapists. Eight qualitative interviews were made with informants with different occupational backgrounds. Questions asked were: Who can consider working with bibliotherapy and in what way? Which requirements are needed? Which are the benefits from bibliotherapy, according to the informants? What could be the task of the library and the librarians? Theories used were narratology, conversational therapy and the bibliotherapeutic process.

    The study shows that all of the informants consider the bibliotherapeutic conversation to be important. Those who may consider working with interactive bibliotherapy, are mainly those with a background in social work. Most of them wish to cooperate with medical staff or adequate organization. All of the librarians consider themselves to have enough knowledge to be able to find adequate bibliotherapeutic material. What the informants require if they were to work with bibliotherapy, are education, some personal traits, time and space. The task of the library and the librarian could be several, including personal development and problem solving among students, patients and library visitors.

    Abstract [en]

    The column ”Fråga bibliotekarien” by Jenny Lindh is published in Dagens Nyheter, and is a popular culture work wich is read by a broad audience. This work examines how Lindh relates to established stereotypes of female librarians, and her position on the matter. Lindhs work is new in that she is a working librarian herself, and the question to be answered by this master thesis is whether or not her narrative loosens up, and breaks down, established stereotype images of the librarian.

    The source material is Lindhs work ”Fråga bibliotekarien”, published in Dagens Nyheter. The analysis is made on 171 pieces, which are answers to the questions of readers. A method of discourse analysis is used, focusing on categorized content and in some cases form. The categorized elements follows previous published sterotypes of the female librarian. Theory of language for narrative creation and post-modernity has been used in the analysis of the material. Further, the humor and irony used in the work is discussed and it is shown how Lindh uses these narrative tools to both enhance and ridicule the sterotype images of the female librarian.

    This master thesis come to the conclusion that Lindh is very well aware of the various stereotypes that exists regarding her profession, and that she uses these. But also that the total ensemble of her work breaks down these images and shows how impossible they are as a representation of the female librarian. Finally, she adds a new narrative, in connection with post-modernity, where she creates an identity of the librarian built upon contradictary stereotypes of old, with added display of professional competence within library and information science.

    Abstract [en]

    Swedish cultural heritage policies put heritage of the Church of Sweden in an exceptional position. It is protected by law and managed by the Church of Sweden which receives a yearly economical compensation from the Swedish government to assure a continued protection and care. The purpose of this study has been to examine categories and definitions that are used in the formulations of the protection of this part of the national cultural heritage. The study also analyses the values and motives behind the distribution, which is being regulated by said definitions. To achieve this, I have answered questions about to what kind of projects the compensation has been distributed, focusing on the appointed object and intervention categories. These classifications have been compared to the projects actual character, and also to official guidelines and policies.

    The results of the study show that the distribution of the government compensation follow official guidelines more often than not, but also that the project categorizations are frequently misguiding in comparison to the actual character of the projects. In written statements from the Swedish National Heritage Board and the Church of Sweden a dissonance regarding their respective value perspectives has been shown. The big difference is found in a question of definitions regarding the nature of the religious heritage in policy documents.

    Definitions of cultural heritage are crucial in heritage management. The classification stated in policy documents and used during the management of the heritage of the Church of Sweden, is also defining what is included. These classifications and definitions are part of the traditional western heritage management discourse. By using theoretical frameworks like Authorized Heritage Discourse the results of the study has been put in a perspective of using categories as way to manifest material heritage.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines what effect the economic discourse in EU migration policy might have on the view of migrants’ human rights in the European public opinion. The study is carried out as a qualitative content analysis of two central EU migration policy documents: The Global Approach to Migration and Mobility (2011), and A European Agenda on Migration (2015). The objective of the analysis is to determine whether the economic discourse have a dominant position in the documents and how this might affect the rights of the most vulnerable migrants. The analysis is based on a deductive approach in which existing theory have been analysed to identify key concepts upon which predetermined discourses have been decided and analysed in the documents. The analysis establishes that the economic discourse has a dominant position in the two documents, and that human rights are conditional. The analysis shows that migrants are stripped of their basic human rights due to the fact that they are not members of a community. The conclusion of the analysis is that human dignity is dependent upon your skills, competences and economic capital. It is expressed through the lack of political will to propose initiatives aimed at the most vulnerable migrants. The EU and is Member States are proposing stronger actions when it comes to attracting third country nationals to the EU that might contribute to economic growth.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines the prevalence of Roma voices in Swedish and German newspaper articles specifically about Roma individuals or groups. It explores the importance of discursive self-representation for minority and marginalised groups, and evaluates the level of participation afforded to the Roma in three of the largest newspapers in each country, across a varied political spectrum. Sweden and Germany both profess to be seeking solutions to the widespread discrimination against Roma within their own countries and across Europe, and therefore provide interesting comparative case studies, both due to their historical relationship with Roma populations and in light of contemporary events. This study uses quantitative analysis to determine the percentage of newspaper articles about Roma that include a Roma voice and qualitative analysis to investigate the variety of voices included. The findings are then analysed using theories regarding European identity-building, Orientalism, and media analysis. The thesis concludes with a reflection upon the impact of under- or misrepresentation on minority groups, and includes recommendations for the improvement of representation and participation of marginalised voices in media discourse.

    Samernas första politiska rörelse runt sekelskiftet i Sverige var startskottet, inte bara för samernas egen politiska organisation, utan också för en debatt kring samernas rasifierade identitet. Debatten kretsade kring rätten till land, och huruvida den skulle förbehållas endast nomadiserande renskötande samer, eller om rätten skulle inkludera alla samer oavsett levnadsuppehälle. Samtidens argumentativa klassificeringssystem satte samernas yrkesutövning främst, men med rasifierade premisser kring samernas temporala och spatiala tillhörighet. En av premisserna för argumentationen, samernas temporala tillhörighet, präglades ur svensk medias synvinkel av en stark tro på att samerna riskerade att försvinna. Jag argumenterar för att detta hade en rasbaserad logik i form av en anakronistisk tillhörighet utanför en (svensk) evolutionistisk tidslinje. Genom en annan premiss, den spatiala, visade de svenska journalisterna på en stark tendens att placera samerna i ett mytiskt mellan-rum, där fjällen fungerade som en gränslös kuliss, som befäste samernas utanförskap i det svenska produktiva landskapet. Då den svenska definitionen av samerna inte baserades på yttre karaktärsdrag, utan på en yrkesutövning, destabiliserar den de flesta västerländska uppfattningar om ras. Denna studie presenterar därför några ledtrådar till hur och varför moderna minoritetsfrågor är så komplexa för den svenska självbilden.

    This paper examines the development of the Zinneke Parade, a new intangible heritage project in Brussels. Using an interdisciplinary approach which encompasses heritage studies and multicultural studies, it analyses the processes and aims of the parade.

    With rising globalisation and the corresponding fragmenting of societies has come the many legitimacy claims of identity politics. The resulting growth of multiculturalist and interculturalist approaches in ethnoculturally diverse societies and increased pluralism in heritage projects form the background of the Zinneke Parade. Through narratives gathered from interviews and promotional materials, this paper discusses how Zinneke manifests both interculturalist and pluralist heritage approaches.

    Ranging from the late 1880s to the late 1970s children with dis/abilities were orderlyinstitutionalized in Sweden due to lack of accessibility and aids in the surrounding society. The aim of this thesis is to discuss how ableist discourse of dis/ability and gender interacted with materiality, such as buildings, clothes and objects, in the institutions and how it affected the everyday lives of women who grew up there, a concept previously unexplored in a Swedish context. Using a qualitative method interviews were carried out with women who grew up in various institutions in Sweden from the 1930s to 1970s. The interviews were analysed using a crip theoretical understanding of dis/ability and ableism paired with Barad’s post humanist understanding of matter as both product of and producer of discourse. The analysis show that matter was created, used and understood in a constant intra-action with ableist discourse, confining, controlling and subduing the women. Matter and the use of it functioned as a tool for upholding ableism, creating a colonial structure of medical access to the children’s bodies. Hence, the use of matter can be understood as acts of ableist rhetoric created to signalize and uphold ableist standards. Such ableist rhetoric can be said to carry on into the contemporary Swedish understanding of dis/ability, making evident the on-going objectification and medicalization of people with dis/ability today and its intersection with discourses of gender and sexuality.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this thesis has been to discuss whether remainders of colonial influences exist within the UN's definition of torture or not. The discussion has been presented from a postcolonial point of view, in dialogue with contemporary power critical theorists. In order to raise awareness of a potential colonial influence, the following questions were intended to be answered:

    –                                        Are there any reasons, if so – which ones, to regard the UN's definition of torture as a colonial project? And;

    –                                        To what extent is the term “inhumane” limiting for the prohibition against torture from a postcolonial perspective?

    One of the most central arguments of the chosen theories is that the term “inhumane” evokes prejudices that a racializing apparatus within the social norms of the UN automatically produces. These prejudices are, according to the theorists, influenced by images of people in non-western and non-secular (especially muslim) societies as more prone to exercise “violence” and “cruelty” towards their own citizens as well as towards the population of the world in general. Thereby, these people's state of being leave them with no access to the human rights – they are not acting in a humane way and are therefore not allowed to be treated humanely. Even though the reasoning of the theorists are understandable at a theoretical and emotional level, the language of the convention against torture leaves no substantial evidence for this assumed cultural bias and colonial tendency.

     

    Where the theories point out some human suffering as excluded from the definition, the solutions on how to include more aspects of suffering might be too intangible to be sustainable within the context of international law. One of the theorists however, Talal Asad, makes an appealing effort by introducing a paragraph of consent within the definition of torture. A paragraph of consent makes it, according to him, easier to account for emotional experiences of suffering. At the same time it makes it possible to exercise self-selected suffering (such as religious rituals and certain sexual preferences) between two or more consenting adults, without them being stigmatized within the discourse of suffering. By introducing the paragraph of consent and the elimination of the word “cruel” (because of its tendency of being linked to racializing factors) from the definition, Asad's  argumentation points out a way to possibly improve the prohibition to include more aspects of suffering.

    Based upon anthropological fieldwork and contemporary literature as well as an analysis of media reports and statements by government officials such as current president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, this thesis explores the interrelations between political discourses, lifestyle, and identity construction in contemporary Turkey. In the thesis, it is depicted how certain lifestyle choices are legally limited or (drawing on moral, religious, and nationalist discourses) labeled as 'bad' or 'wrong' by the current AKP government and certain parts of society. The informants interviewed for this thesis, mostly well-educated, young Turkish urbanites, feel like these restrictions of lifestyle choices limit their possibilities to freely construct and express their identities, which leads to feelings of resentment, unhappiness, and discomfort. By analyzing political developments in the 20th and 21st century, it is furthermore illustrated that authoritarianism has been a substantial part of the Turkish state project ever since the founding of the Turkish Republic. The current political events and conflicts about lifestyle and identity construction, it is argued, have to be understood in this context rather than depicting them as based upon a strict dividing line between 'secular' and 'religious' parts of society, as it is often depicted in Western media.

    Historical sources suggest that the bad reputation of Bioko island ―a product of mixed exoticism, fear of death and allure for profit— might have started as early as the first European explorations of sub-Saharan Africa. Today, the same elements seem to have been reconfigured, producing a similar result in the Western imagination: cultural exoticization, fear of state-sponsored violence and allure for profit are as actual as ever in popular conceptions of Equatorial Guinea. A notion of ongoing terror keeps conditioning the study of the tiny African nation, resulting in media trends and academic discourses polarized by the grand themes of oil/money/corruption and human rights violations —which are highly counterproductive when trying to account for Equatoguineans’ everyday practices, mainly because the violence exerted by the state has shifted in nature. Deploying a triple theoretical framework made up by Michel de Certeau’s (1984) concepts of readers/writers/texts and strategies, Michael Jackson’s (2005) work on being, agency and intersubjectivity, as well as Bayart’s (1993) ‘politics of the belly’, this thesis explores some of the complex cultural and social-psychological strategies that urban populations in Malabo have developed in order to create, sustain and protect the integrity of their social selves while living in inherently oppressive environments. People’s means of personhood negotiation are observed through contemporary systems of beliefs, narratives and practices. I suggest that negotiations are products of, but also preconditions for, the existence of a social apparatus and the integrity of the selves moving within its discursive boundaries. Consequently, Equatoguineans’ strategies for self-making are seen as potentially responsible for reproducing a destructive status quo. This idea is further developed through the concept of lateral struggle, a form of social violence alternative to top-down flows which builds on sociality as culturally calibrated forms of symbolic interaction between selves constructed in a zero sum fashion. The dynamics of lateral struggles are illustrated through ethnographic data on what people phrase as el Guineano’s innate ‘rebelliousness’, which in turn visibilizes processes of collective self-making and the verbalization of negative national stereotypes. Possibilities for the rise of more positive types of personhood based on a habitual splitting of individual self from national other are explored. Finally, a brief assessment of how such splitting could be hindering people from collectively writing a ‘homeland’ is made.

    During the last decades, climate change studies have been focusing more intensely on its anthopocenic essence, as the consequence of production and consumption patterns that require the intensive exploitation of the environment. In line with this school of thought, and new generations of studies on environmental crime, this work aims to present the environmentally and climate-related issues arising from land degradation in the Peruvian Amazon; focusing on those casual mechanisms developed from the collusion between Peruvian-economic policies and new private actors such as transnational corporations (TNCs). Relying on the assumption that: the processes moving the issue of climate change overcome the global space, and can be observed from regional, national or local point of view; this work's purpose is to analyze how a single country as Peru, currently considered of low ecological footprint, could, by means of the definition of national laws (environmentally and economic-related) burden climate change. The analysis focuses on a single case-study identified with the territory within the Northern Ucayali and Southern Loreto regions in Peru, and builds on the theory of state-corporate crime developed in the 1990s by Ronald C. Kramer and Raymond J. Michalowski to define the role of state-corporate relationships in the production of social harms. To show how this relationship is today shaping the globally spread issue of climate change, the analysis of the palm oil industry in Ucayali is presented as main example of a broader phenomenon of transgression and partnership between private and public spheres in Peru. In this optic, the purpose is to give further contributions to the studies of climate change as state-corporate crime, focusing on the analysis of those territory, as the Amazon, whose preservation has been identified as mayor tool against global warming and which is instead harmed by the relation between private and governments interests.

    The objective of this project is to approximate the functional illiterates population to the society within the Brazilian banking service in a more accessible way: through their personal mobile phones. It aims to enhance the social integration of the illiterate people by experiencing this service developed through a process focusing on their feedback, wishes and expectations augmented with the designer’s background.The mobile phone it is quite accessible in developing countries, like Brazil, and counts on technology that enhances the user's interaction; the banking service is a facilitator concerning the economic life of any citizen. Both aspects were the starting point of this project due their importance in the everyday life and relevance for a person’s autonomy.My personal goal is also to use this project to alert the society about the issues regarding the social life of an illiterate – their difficulties and fears towards daily situations – through a consistent project that can be used as a reference to develop products and services towards this group of potential users.

    Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos (MMDH) in Santiago, Chile is dedicated to the depiction of a difficult heritage. This museum of memory and human rights narrates the military dictatorship in Chile 1973–1990, a time when thousands of people were subjected to unthinkable human rights violations committed by the Government Junta of Chile.

    Memorial museums exist worldwide and aim to depict a specific historical event when people have been victimized by the state. By showcasing the crimes committed by the junta, MMDH seeks to contribute to the culture of human rights to prevent human rights violations from reoccurring in the future; a culture of Nunca Más (Never Again). In this thesis, the permanent exhibitions of MMDH have been studied through the lenses of representation and discourse theory. The purpose has been to understand the way in which the museum depicts the dictatorship and whether the goal of contributing to a human rights culture was visible in the material that is presented in the exhibitions. The results show that MMDH depicts a story using different themes primarily relating to the crimes committed by the Chilean state and the civilian population’s fight for human rights.

    In the exhibitions, several themes evoke emotions and can generate a real impact on the visitors. However, the museum presents its material without analysis or interpretation and it disclaims placing the dictatorship in a historical and political context, which can inhibit the educational purpose of the museum. In addition, since the exhibitions lack educational material on human rights and democracy, the categorization of being a museum of human rights with the goal of contributing to a culture of human rights, is insufficient. In the discourse of the exhibitions present at MMDH there is an apparent inclusion and exclusion of narratives which can be explained by the museum’s political link in a country that to this day is undergoing a process of dealing with its past.

    This is a two-year master’s thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies.

    Abstract [en]

    Stunting is an issue that affects millions of children all over the world including Lesotho. Whilst Lesotho does not have the highest rates of stunting in the Southern African region, the rates are alarmingly high never the less. This paper serves as an insight into the stunting situation in Lesotho from the perspective of UNICEF. Broadly speaking, this paper looks at stunting from two aspects: firstly, looking at causal factors and next at the strategies to address those causes. The skeleton of this thesis is formed around the 1991 UNICEF malnutrition framework which acts as a guide for the theoretical and empirical chapters of this paper. The theoretical chapter outlines the complex interconnectedness of different causal levels those being structural, underlying and immediate causes. One will notice the causal chain as it soon becomes very obvious. The strategic component is the next major element of the theoretical chapter. Similarly, given the interconnectedness of the causal framework, it becomes clear that a holistic approach is necessary to address stunting at all levels. Addressing only the health consequences is not nearly enough. The empirics strongly support certain elements of the theoretical framework from both a causal and strategic perspective. Poverty, education, water, sanitation and rurality are seen as the leading thematic causal factors, while social protection, water and sanitation, education and health programmes are considered to be the most suitable strategies to address stunting. One will notice that although this does not nearly cover all the various components of the theoretical framework, it does make sense given the mandate of UNICEF. And since the nature of the research is broad, there is certainly plenty of room for more narrow-scoped research to be carried out in terms of the effectiveness of individual nutrition and health programmes applied throughout the region, if not the developing world at large.

    This study is an initial attempt to analyze the media debate about the intention to withdraw from the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced last October 2016 by the South African government.

    The purpose is to examine media arguments raised and possible bias on three South African major news sites. Articles selected are analyzed through a web content analysis that allows to understand how the debate about the government’s intention was presented, examining the issue of unconstitutionality and the question of human rights emerged. In order to verify possible media bias, instead, several previous studies on the matter were considered, with particular attention to the one of Eberl, Boomgaarden and Wagner, used to apply a systematic analytical approach. Theories on media accountability and media ethics in South Africa constitute the theoretical framework of the research. The study is conducted by following an extensive review of secondary sources and a typical descriptive case study approach. What the Thesis means to show is that, in most cases, South African web sites have presented and discussed the government’s intention with a negative tone demonstrating media bias especially in the tonality used, often against, more or less openly, the country’s withdrawal.

    Within the field of cinema studies, the question of visual representation is a fundamental pillar. An immense volume of theoretical work has been written on the subject, with various academic approaches such as feministic, postcolonial and gay/lesbian. Yet there is a large social group that seems to have been overlooked within the representational discourse: the elderly. This group of people appears to be a blind spot on the multicultural retina, too often neglected within the area of cultural studies. But as the baby boomer generation, who has always redefined the different stages of life (youth, adulthood, middle age), is entering old age, things are slowly changing. Utilizing a post-structural framework, this essay investigates the visual representation of elderly within the cinematic landscape of the western world. Since the subject is somewhat uncharted territory, a broad interdisciplinary approach is necessary where modern social gerontology meets the field of cinema studies. In a cultural context, social grouping based on age implies a distinct position versus the normative, compare to other types of minorities. Changes of sex, skin colour or sexual preference are uncommon, whereas changing age is the fate of every human being. The elderly as the “the Other” is thus every man’s future destiny. This rather unique position carries an immanent paradox since the only way to avoid the periphery in question is death. As a philosophical counterpoint to this rather dystopian outlook, Gilles Deleuze’s theory of becoming is brought into the discussion. The theoretical part of the essay ends with the ontology of age, a historical review of the field of gerontology and the concept of ageism. After a descriptive section, where contemporary examples of film and other media with old age as a main theme are identified, the analytical part of the essay ensues. With the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu as a theoretical frame of reference, a close reading of the films Avalon (Axel Petersén, 2011), About Schmidt (Alexander Payne, 2002) and RED (Robert Schwentke, 2010) are performed, emphasising aging identity and imposed age-normative behaviour. The semiotics of the aged body is discussed through Jacques Lacans mirror stage and Julia Kristevas abject theory, exemplified by the works of Donigan Cumming. The final part of the essay concerns the great eternal questions within film philosophy: life, death, time and memory, which for the elderly are not merely philosophical concerns but rather notable existential realities. Using Deleuze as a philosophical toolbox, these grand topics are illuminated with examples from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (David Fincher, 2008), Amour (Michael Haneke, 2012) and Ingmar Bergmans classical works, such as Smultronstället (1957), Saraband (2003) and Gycklarnas afton (1953).

    The aim of this thesis is to develop a gamified crowdsourcing platform for transcription and metadata tagging of digitised text documents, and further to examine whether the platform can stimulate engagement in archives and be used as an educational resource. The case, around which the thesis project is conducted, is the governmental Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its historical documents which were damaged in a fire in 2014. 

    Theories about engagement, archival pedagogy, and gamification guided the development of the platform. Bosnian-Herzegovinian school children, History teachers, and staff of the Archives of Bosnia and Herzegovina tested the platform and shared their thoughts of it in focus group discussions and interviews.

    The developed platform consists of a game interface, a database, and an interface for results viewing and searching. It is web-based, and coded in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and PHP. The platform stimulated engagement among the school children who tested it. They expressed interest in reading and learning more about archival documents, in long-term preservation of information, and in the archive’s mission and future. Judging from the discussions and interviews, the platform could well serve as an educational resource. The History teachers showed interest in using the platform in their teaching, and found support for it in the curriculum for the History subject.

    A gamified crowdsourcing platform has been developed, and the perception among school children, History teachers, and archive staff was overall very positive. Crowdsourcing is not just about sourcing out tasks to the crowd. Co-creation of content could furthermore stimulate learning and engagement, and thereby tie a bound between the public and the archive. Gamification can successfully make the overarching goal of crowdsourcing understandable and concrete for the platform users.

    The purpose for this study was to illustrate how images of Sweden and Swedishness is produced and reproduced in travel literature written by four foreign travellers in 19th century Sweden. By doing a close reading and comparing the material, several analytical themes connected to time, place, nationality and social class were located. The theory of representation were then applied, together with the theoretical concepts representing practices, figure of thought and gaze. Locating different figures of thought and representing practices revealed how the travel literature produced and reproduced several and even opposing images of Sweden and Swedishness. The study is to be regarded as an analytical example of 19th century travel in Sweden, but also as the experiences of four individual travellers.
