    Abstract [en]

    The eyewitnessed reportage has a pronounced character of narrating. The imaginative power of the text helps the reader to empathise with the characters. That makes constructing empathy a necessary skill of reporters. But how can this be done?

    Despite a tradition of story telling among reporters, narratologists virtually have neglected the reportage genre. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how narrative strategies can be used in reportages and, at the same time, suggest methods for investigating those strategies. The main question is: How can empathy be constructed? Empathy is here defined as a function of presence, perspective, selection and disnarration. A screen of covert values is also added.

    The study applies a narratological and a media rhetorical approach to journalistic narratives, and focus is on basic discussions supported by analysis samples. Theories by Gérard Genette, Dorrit Cohn, Seymor Chatman, William C. Booth, Gerald Prince, Göran Rossholm, Bengt Nerman and others are discussed.

    Even though a reportage is about real events, it always represents a personal interpretation. It presents the readers with a represented reality. In a narratological model for the macro level of the reportage I identify the trait of construction as an interaction between three instances: the producer (i. e. the implied author), the narrator and the experiencing reporter. On a micro level this model helps me to explain, for example, how a homodiegetic narrator can be combined with external focalisation, and how another character than the experiencing reporter can be focalised. In the former case I examine the interplay between showing and telling relative to the narrator’s visibility. In the latter case I especially focus on a complex technique for shifting perspectives, both those concerning thoughts, like Free, Indirect Discourse (FID), and those concerning perception. At the same time I study different degrees of perspectivity.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores the relationship between inhalation amplitude and turn-taking in spontaneous multiparty conversations held in Estonian. Respiratory activity is recorded with Respiratory Inductance Plethysmography. The main focus is on how inhalation amplitude varies between the inhalations produced directly before turn onset compared to the following inhalations within the same speaking turn. The results indicate a significant difference in amplitude, realised mainly by an increase in inhalation end lung volume values. One of the possible functions of this pattern is to signal an intention of taking the conversational turn. Another could be a phrasing or grouping function connected to lower inhalation amplitudes within turns.

    This essay presents a portrayal of Heathcliff, Catherine and Isabella from a psychoanalytical perspective with regard to four defense mechanisms; namely, repression, denial, sublimation and projection in order to see how these defense mechanisms have affected the characters’ decisions and behaviour, and led them to their destinations in life. It will include three major sections: repression in characters, denial in characters, and sublimation and projection in characters. These terms will be more clearly defined and explained in the subsequent sections.

    Can we change the way we imagine and relate to the risks of our common world, such as plastic pollution, nuclear threats, climate change or economic crisis? With this question at heart, this thesis discusses our interaction with the mediated, and often distant, global complexities and risks.

    Following the perspective of the spectator and consumer, this study weaves together literature with stories from culture, media, design and entertainment. It examines the relationship of the personal to the global by outlining five critical looking lenses focused on distance, emission, contact, disruption and invisibility.

    The resulting project articulates speculative design strategies for reconfiguring our relation to two select global risks; the nuclear contamination threat and plastic pollution. What if these scenarios were real, what if we felt these values, how would the world be different? By questioning the rational, these narratives aim to trigger the imagination of alternative possibilities, and requestion our current global dilemmas.

    Abstract [en]

    My interest in Going Offline was twofold. (1) I wanted to investigate how the entrance of a new (virtual) space had affected our understanding of the concepts of space, time and body, and what this could entail for the sole individual. (2) I wanted to, in a really hands on manner, create a small bug in an otherwise well functioning, fast and effective system of communication. In other words to intervene the course of events in my everyday life to affect myself and others connected to it. Like the small stone thrown into the water creating rings (movements) on the surface, where the closest one, which is the most vigorous, influences the next one and so on. Overall I aimed to explore the sole individual’s connection to social structures and a global phenomena.

    This thesis explores the Swedish Institute’s construction of a national narrative of Sweden and the war and how it changed over time by comparing three time periods, 1939-1945, 1946-1959, 1960-1969. The adapting narrative of World War II serves to illustrate changes in the Swedish Institute’s projected Swedish identity, focusing on neutrality as an intrinsic component. Creating a national narrative to compliment Sweden’s image served to strengthen Sweden’s international reputation. Thus the Swedish Institute’s narrative of Sweden and the war adjusts according to the changing contexts. Ultimately the Swedish Institute constructed a narrative that was complimentary to the image of Sweden they intended to promote internationally.

    Writing is one of the four skills that students learning a foreign language are supposed to acquire, and writing often has an important role in the language classroom. Furthermore, in the field of cultural and arts education, a process-oriented approach is considered essential for learning. However, even though we see an increased interest in emphasizing the writing process, in reality, what is often commented, discussed and graded is the final outcome - the product. Consequently, features of the writing process, like fluency, revisions, and pauses, are not considered. This thesis explores what information about the writing process might add to the picture. In this manner, the current study investigates the writing process of advanced Swedish EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners through keystroke logging programme.

    With the increased use of word processing tools, and not least with the development of keystroke logging tools, we now have the possibility to take also the details of the writing process into account. As Spelman Miller and Sullivan (2006:1) point out,

    “[a]s an observational tool, keystroke logging offers the opportunity to capture details of the activity of writing, not only for the purposes of the linguistic, textual and cognitive study of writing, but also for the broader applications concerning the development of language learning, literacy, and language pedagogy”.

    In the present study, a keystroke logging programme named Inputlog has been used, which allows researchers to get a better understanding of writing processes as well as cognitive processes during writing (Lindgren & Sullivan, 2002).

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis explores the themes of counterfactuality, determinism and free will in Thomas Hardy’s novels Tess of the D’Urbervilles, The Return of the Native and The Mayor of Casterbridge. The aim is to show how some literary strategies create a sensation that the characters are trying to diverge from an anticipated destiny, and how these measures contribute to the impression that the characters possess free will. In other words, Hardy’s literary devices create the notion that the characters are confined but paradoxically they appear independent. The tragic fate and the tragic past of the characters are the two main literary strategies which are investigated in order to show how the characters are confined by the plot, which influences the reader’s perception of the characters. The tragic fate of the character is expressed through the numerous coincidences, the characters’ choices and actions as well as the way the order of events is presented in the narrative. The tragic past is expressed through a history that is assigned to the character or by the events that the character experiences as part of the narrative. Highlighting these literary devices allows for a reading where many of these events have the ability to spark a counterfactual thought in the reader’s mind, an imagined possibility of how a causal chain could have developed differently. I claim that the moment the reader begins to construct a different possible outcome of the plot the feeling that the character has free will is strengthened. This is due to two separate, but related reasons. Firstly, a variety of possible plotlines, caused by counterfactual thinking, strengthens the image of a character with the choice to follow another causal line of events. Secondly. by claiming that the characters take part in creating their fate we are in a way making them responsible for their actions.

    Tyr – A historical and comparative study of configurations and formations connected to the Old Norse god Tyr. Klas af Edholm

     

    This thesis has two aims. One is a discussion of the history of the study of Old Norse religion and related aspects, centered on how general tendencies within the area of research have affected the interpretations of the god *Tīwaz/Tyr. Thereby, it treats a selection of influential trends of interpretation, and a selection of prominent scholars of the field. The second aim is an empirical and comparative analysis of the Old Norse source material and, to some degree, the continental Germanic, the Baltic, and the other Indo-European material. Tyr has been interpreted according to trends of research in the field; the mythological character has been used as a projection screen of the theories. Already from the beginning, Tyr was interpreted as a sky god; connected to this was the conception of an original high god. The interpretations of Tyr as a sun god, sky god, and/or law god are close related to this high god conception. These interpretations of the god Tyr has built their arguments upon the etymological connection to Indo-European words for ‘heaven, celestial’ and ‘god’, but they have not taken enough consideration of the Old Norse sources. Georges Dumézil interpreted Tyr, according to his système tripartite, as a law god. This understanding of the god has been widely adopted, but cannot be confirmed; the Old Norse material only speaks of Tyr as a war god. The comparative Indo-European etymological material indicates that his function as sky god is archaic, while the martial traits shared with the continental Germanic and Celtic counterparts prove that this characteristic must have evolved early. Tyr (or rather his predecessor *Tīwaz) lost his celestial traits and became an unmitigated war god, and as such we perceive him in the Old Norse religion.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis analyses the late-Vedic goddess Śrī and her non-personified precedent śrī ‘splendour, glory, excellence, fortune’. Śrī has not before been studied in the light of the Avestan royal splendour, xᵛarənah, and is often interpreted one-sidedly as a pre-Aryan goddess of prosperity. In contrast, this thesis locates the genealogy of Śrī’s characteristics in the Vedic goddess of dawn. The meaning of light in Vedic poetic and sacrificial terminology is highlighted, especially in the relation between royal patron and priest-poet. Śrī’s relation to terms like varcas and tejas, the “shining fame” of the hero, and epic descriptions of blazing warriors, are discussed. The nimbus in early Indian iconography is compared to descriptions of royal splendour in the texts. A subsistent theme in epics, myths and Vedic rituals is identified: the splendour won, lost and recovered by the king. This paradigm is showed to be dependent on the truthfulness, sacrificial status and asceticism of the king. A new understanding of central events in the royal consecration ritual, in the Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata are thereby offered. It is argued that a continuous and richly varied concept of royal splendour can be identified, from the Ṛgveda to the great epics, and that it is of considerable importance in the ancient Indian rulership ideology.

    Abstract [en]

    People usually commence an argument in hope for persuading the other party. These arguments can be a part of their job or personal life, which may influence the life of people around them or sometimes in case of a political debate, can affect lives of millions of people. The situation can get more challenging if the argument is produced in a language other than someone's mother tongue and in this respect, language proficiency can be of great value to them. One of the most important goals of language teaching classes is to teach the students of foreign languages how to develop information processes in order to express themselves. In the present study, the performance of seven students who study English in a private language school in Iran, is analyzed in a debate on 'globalization'. These Farsi speaking learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) used some collaborative and individual strategies in the process of interactive argumentation. It can be said that this debate met the requirements of a 'pro et contra' (for and against) argument mentioned by Naess (2005). The views that are in favor of the debate's subject are mentioned as well as the views against it. It does not seem to have a conclusion and the views were not weighed against each other, they were merely introduced and both sides were indicated. This mainly took place due to of lack of time to consider all the aspects of the arguments. Therefore, it can be maintained that the result of this argumentation was 'globalization now and later'. According to Hirsch's 'minimal model of ideal interactive argumentation', this may seem to be a terrible situation, but in fact it is "a very realistic assumption to make about argumentation as an on-going interactive enterprise" (1987: 440).

    Abstract [en]

    Differences in marking definiteness among various languages have been considered one of the most confusing areas for speakers of different languages. As a teacher of EFL to Farsi speakers, I have frequently noticed that the students face problems when it comes to marking a definite or indefinite noun in English. One of the main objectives of the present study is to shed light on the trouble sources in practice of the use of articles in English among the subjects of my study. Farsi as a language which has two distinct registers of spoken and written forms with 9 various forms of definite/indefinite markers is different from English with 4 definite/indefinite markers. Students who speak some languages that lack these articles (such as Japanese), or probably do not have the one-to-one correspondence with definite marking system in English (such as Farsi), tend to face problems while using them in English.

    It is believed that Farsi marks noun phrases for specificity/non-specificity rather than definiteness/indefiniteness, while English marks nouns for definiteness/indefiniteness. The present study shows interesting instances of the choices of article that Farsi native speakers make when it comes to marking definiteness in English. Definiteness is mostly marked by a bare noun, indefiniteness is marked by the numeral 'yek' (pre-positioned) or ye (pre-positioned) or suffix '-i' (i.e. one —post-positioned) and specificity can apply to both definite and indefinite NPs.

    The Gears of War

    The study of states, their expansion and interaction has always been an important part of political history and often involves military as well as economic perspectives. Relations between economic capital and means of coercion is according to Charles Tilly an integral part of the state and the security policies of early modern states included a high degree of resource mobilisation, preparation for and making of war. How were these problems meant to be solved and what really happened? These historical problems are brought together in this thesis to examine the Swedish government's intentions in the form of military and resource strategic objectives, how these were implemented in the form of rules and regulations and how this was followed by the armed forces in reality. By analysing strategical and operational plans, regulatory documents and muster-rolls with the help of Tillys statemaking theories as well as Lars Wedins strategical analysis model, the thesis sets out to define the swedish states' foreign  policy, military doctrine and strategy, compare regulations with reality and evaluate the ties between theory and practice.The study shows that geopolitical factors created demands for a new general military strategy that was based on warfare with higher mobility in the border provinces of the swedish realm. The security policy seems to have been an expression of the unity of the swedish state, however, the conflict between aristocratic and royal interests shows an interesting dynamic within the political system that is characteristic for the period. The resource strategy that supported the developing doctrine of mobile warfare in Sweden was based on a well equipped fleet, a smaller and more manageble baggage train for the infantry and a military storage system that together would enable faster responses, better transport and supply capability and a more agile defence that differed from the previous fortification doctine. The strategy for procuring and maintaining of outfitting and equipment of the infantry was decentralised during the early 1800's and the civil society became more involved in the resource mobilisation. This constituted a nationalisation of resource strategical means that aimed to alleviate the natural economic limitations in Sweden.The muster-rolls of Västerbottens' infantry regiment shows that the regulations were implemented in reality but that a deficient transport capability caused by disrupted supply lines and slow aquisition of new equipment led to a sometimes severe shortage of equipment and uniforms. Apart from the deficiencies there were substantial changes to more practical equipment in line with the mobile military doctrine and security policy of Sweden. In conclusion, a clear connection between political goals, regulatory documents and implemented changes are seen and an organic relationship between intention, regulation and reality. Further investigation of these historical problems, with ample source material and useful theoretic models in a swedish context, is encouraged.

    The establishment of a Socio-technological Hub is through refurbishing, altering and reprogramming of already existing KTH School of architecture, Stockholm by the means of digital tools. This project is driven with two parallel objectives. First, exploring the potential for alteration when using the contemporary digital tools in the design and production. Seconded exploring the potential of architecture as a medium for integration of the knowledge in 3 sectors of society: university, industry and public.

    Abstract [en]

    The island of Gotland houses a number of terrestrial mammalian species even though it was covered with ice during the last glacial period. The purpose of this study is to genetically analyse the mountain hare (Lepus timidus) to deduce its origin and genetic structure during different time periods, and also to discuss how it reached the island. A 130 base pair sequence of mitochondrial DNA from 38 prehistoric hares was analysed and compared to modern hares from different locations in Europe. The result shows a discrepancy among the samples creating two populations with different origin.

    Abstract [en]

    This master thesis deals with two case studies in environmental archaeology and battlefield archaeology focusing on two major events in the late history of the Swedish coastal town Umeå and its nearby village Sävar. Established in the early 1600's, Umeå was known for its export of timber and import of cereals. The town has suffered from numerous fires, the fire in 1888 being the most devastating. Few written records of the town remain from before the 1900's. The latest war in Sweden's history is documented in historical sources and took place at Krutbrånet, Sävar where the Swedish troops suffered defeat against the russian forces in 1809. The old port in Umeå has not been previously excavated archaeologically and only a small part of the battlefield area at Krutbrånet has been surveyed. Neither of the sites have yet been protected sites under Swedish heritage conservation act. The purpose of these two case studies is to present new research results from these two sites.In the first case study, archaeobotany and soil chemistry methods were used to analyse soil samples from undisturbed cultural layers in a construction trench at the old port of Umeå. A thick burnt layer consisted of charcoal, oats and weeds, suggesting storage and possibly intended as food for horses. Oat and pea were radiocarbon dated to most likely late 1800's which places the burned layer with oats to the big city fire in 1888. The area could have intact cultural layers that are important to investigate for understanding the  unknown history of Umeås old port.The basis for the second case study is the material evidence of lead musket bullets found during a small field survey at Krutbrånet, conducted in 2010. The bullets were studied using X-ray Fluorescence together with spatial analysis to determine if troop nationality could be possible to distinguish based on composition, characteristics and spatial positions. The results revealed bullets  in varied sizes and composed of lead but also alloys of copper, antimony and tin that appear in mixed quantities spread in all the studied areas of the battlefield. Field surveys of uninvestigated areas at Krutbrånet are needed to understand the context of the studied material and of troop formations. Further studies could also be isotope analyses to determine the origins of the oats and bullets.

    I stand in front of the remnants of a building. Braces and beams create a silhouette against the sky. The walls and roof are missing, but the windows remain, and the sheet metal doors. The structure frames the emptiness. This former building became a metaphor for man. Vulnerable in the face of a sudden turn of events, we lack protection against the world around us. Only our skeleton, muscles and naked skin hold us together. And just as eyes are said to reflect the soul, the leftover windows provide a hint of the former building’s life. The windows became the key to this building’s history. We are dependent on our buildings, just as the buildings are dependent upon us. In times of change, our social structures support us. Our life cycles are the course of events that allow us to move on, change, and be unique. Marks are left with the passage of time. Facades can be open, opened, forced, closed, covered, empty, or ready to be filled. Facades can be the time that passes. We are facades in transition, but stable in our foundations.Nothing is really alive until there is something missing, and the opportunity to place ourselves into a context arises. And in that aspect, the emptiness following the fall of the Twin Towers is therefore more telling than the buildings themselves.Everything we see in a building tells a story. In this essay, the story of Berlin’s House of Parliament is told. I reflect on how man mirrors his present in a building that is in a process of transition and how we are forced to confront ourselves with its history. I consider how a new dimension is created when something is opened, handing over the inside to reveal its past. How time can alter a symbol’s meaning. Today the dome on the House of Parliament represents democracy, as opposed to one hundred years ago, when it stood for power.Facades are in constant change.Does a facade need to be affected by transformation, deconstruction and destruction so that we can understand its whole, or are there other ways to penetrate its surface? Is the structure’s ability to evolve andadapt that which fascinates us and allows us to see its possibilities?Both man and building need “change” in order to illustrate their past and interpret their present. This is most apparent in the moment that the "facade cracks". In the vacuum that is created, it becomes obvious that the present is not forever. To exist in the present, is to be in a state of change.

    Syftet med det här arbetet är att undersöka hur jag med hjälp av den kognitiva neurovetenskapens forskning om hjärnans koncentrations- och uppmärksamhetsförmåga, kan förbättra och effektivisera min instudering och framförandet som pianist av tre verk med tre skilda speltekniska krav från tre olika tidsepoker. Jag har strävat efter att hitta metoder för att kontrollera min koncentration och uppmärksamhet bättre vid övning och framförande. Vidare vill jag genom bredden av repertoaren, skapa en mall som kan hjälpa mig och framtida musiker förbättra spelet genom kontrollerad koncentration vid övning och framförande.

    I det här arbetet har jag valt tre verk som är skrivna av kompositörerna J.S. Bach, W. A Mozart och F. Chopin. Verken är Preludium och fuga i Bess-dur BWV 866, Sonat nr 4 i Ess-dur och Ballade nr 3 i Ass-dur. Dessa är verk som pianister vid ett eller annat tillfälle spelar och tacklar de eviga svårigheterna som är att behärska polyfonin, artikulationen och flexibiliteten i sitt spel. Jag har skrivit om arbetsminnet roll för koncentrationen och inspirerats och strävat efter att hitta en mall för att kontrollera min koncentration och applicera mallen på verkens svårigheter och vad min lärare föreslagit att jag förbättrar i mitt spel.

    Mitt arbete har resulterat i att jag utifrån en mall på olika sätt har applicerat forskningen om hjärnans arbetsminne och dess roll för koncentrationen till att hjälpa mig i musicerandet, hur mallen har sett ut för att kontrollera koncentrationen, hur jag har applicerat och arbetat utifrån den i min instudering och framförande och därigenom har kunnat förbättra mitt spel.

    This thesis aims to bring to light the perceptions of mentalities of government through the eyes of unaccompanied asylum-seeking minors in Sweden. It also seeks to offer some insight and reflections from a custodian perspective.

    Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children that come to Sweden are entitled to the same rights as the children holding citizenships in Sweden. The right to be heard and listened to is enshrined in the Convention of the Rights of the Child and holds great value during the asylum-process. Thus, the enforcement of these rights, among other rights, shows to be challenging in practice when scrutinizing the asylum process.

    With a pluralistic theoretical approach, leaning on the works of Hannah Arendt and Jacques Derrida, along with the narratives shared by the informants, this study aims to uncover the probabilities of feeling helpless during the asylum process, it also seeks to explore how mechanisms of power relations and control are configured according to the informants.

    Most laws regarding securing rights for refugees are formed by international organizations and constituted by national politicians. These laws operate to gain control at the hand of legality, thus the restrictiveness has been at the expense of the child’s best interest.

    As I believe more initiatives should be taken within the field of migration policy, by having unaccompanied asylum-seeking children as the point of departure, this study is an endeavor to help give them a voice.

    Sylvia Plath’s poetry has received considerable critical attention with respect to a wide range of themes and critical approaches. Variously labeled feminist, political, mythical and suicidal, Plath has been subject to enormous biographical scrutiny but the critical responses available today offer increasingly nuanced understandings of Plath’s work.  However, sufficient attention has not been given to the significant prevalence of images of places and spaces in Plath’s poetry. With particular focus on a selection of poems from The Collected Poems, this thesis argues that the personae in the poems confront “infelicitous places” and that the poems resonate with a tension between place (here referring to a space that is delimited by certain values) and space (in the sense of an expansion without the restrictions of place). What I here refer to as infelicitous place can be understood as an inversion of Gaston Bachelard’s conception of “felicitous space” and accounts for the way in which places in Plath’s poetry are marred with anxiety and ambivalence as opposed to Bachelard’s benevolent, protective spaces. The places and spaces in the poems are dealt with in relation to the notion of infelicitous place, as well as the significance of walls and the affinity between place and poetics.

The pieces of daily life, which are discovered by the “third eye” (different angle than usual), become a point of departure of the chain of imagination. The viewers have freedom to interpret the design in the way they want. They connect their personal memories with the design, which makes the differences in reaction. The story continues to be narrated while transforming its appearance. Storytelling is a succession from designer to viewer, as if to draw a spiral. One day, I took pieces of wood.     Currently there is a demand for practical ways to integrate ecological insights into practices of design, which previously have lacked a substantive empirical basis. In the process of developing the Albano Resilient Campus, a transdisciplinary group of ecologists, design scholars, and architects pioneered a conceptual innovation, and a new paradigm of urban sustainability and development: Social-Ecological Urbanism.  Social-Ecological Urbanism is based on the frameworks of Ecosystem Services and Resilience thinking. This approach has created novel ideas with interesting repercussions for the international debate on sustainable urban development. From a discourse point of view, the concept of SEU can be seen as a next evolutionary step for sustainable urbanism paradigms, since it develops synergies between ecological and socio-technical systems. This case study collects ‘best practices’ that can lay a foundational platform for learning, innovation, partnership and trust building within the field of urban sustainability. It also bridges gaps in existing design approaches, such as Projective Ecologies and Design Thinking, with respect to a design methodology with its basis firmly rooted in Ecology.

    Abstract [en]

    Illustrating the same story in three different ways explores illustration processes and demonstrates the impact of illustration on the interpretation of the story. Enhancing the transparency of creative processes places an illustrator into the highlighted position as the producer of visual content and ideas. 

    The story of The Redheaded Man, written by Russian absurdist Daniil Kharms in 1937, functions as a framework for this conceptual illustration research. Although the anti-narrative features of the story almost reject illustration, its polysemous nature opens a path for the variety of approaches in visualization of the text.

    In the attached report I introduce three different approached and illustrated responses to the story of The Redheaded Man realized during the MA degree work project, as well as the reflections and categorization of the content and ideas behind each illustration project.

    The outcome of the project addresses the questions of creative processes and illustrator’s visual decisions on both personal and meta-level, addressing the need of developing the theoretical content for the field of illustration.

    Stockholm is an archipelago of islands connected by water that historically has been an important resource for the city and for the industries, which found an easy access for ships and therefore they settled on strategic positions along the edges.

    This thesis investigates the topics of water, industrial heritage and edges in the city of Stockholm: these aspects are strong in their individual identity but they also interact in a powerful and interesting way.

    This work intervenes where this pattern is still visible -due to the presence of water and industries- but not accessible because it lacks the third element of connection with the city.

    The aim is therefore to investigate strategies that increase and reconnect the potential of these aspects that got disconnected through time.

    To obtain accessibility and usability, the edge was transformed and redefined to enhance the experience of walking along it.

    An analysis was carried out and a proposal was designed for the site of Lövholmen, which has these characteristics -the water, a strong industrial heritage and proximity to the city- that are now disconnected.

    The opening of the edge and possibilities of walking will transform and reconnect the site - and the richness in it- with the city of Stockholm.

    The purpose of this study has been to find out what concepts of user participation exits in the theory formation of Library 2.0. The study has also investigated if theories about Library 2.0 have been affected by the practical experiences made by the implementations of Library 2.0 in library environments.

    The source material consists of texts published in the international journals Library Review, Library Management, or Journal of Documentation, within the years of 2005-2011. The method used is the critical discourse analysis, mostly inspired by Norman Fairclough.  The critical discourse analysis is different from the discourse analysis since it acknowledge the ability of changes. Thus, this study focus more on processes of change than other discourse analysis within the field of LIS (Library and Information Science).

    Four discourses were found in the selected source material – the Social Plurality Discourse, the IT- Pedagogical Discourse, the Market Discourse and the Expert Discourse. A positive view of user participation in library activities was found in the first three of these, even if the Social Plurality Discourse often presented a critical view on the technological emphasis in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse has a negative approach to user participation in general, and especially to user tagging functions in Library 2.0. The Expert Discourse is the most common in the texts published in 2011 and often uses arguments based on practical experiences that show that the users, so far, have not participated in Library 2.0-services. These arguments have the potential to cause change in the discourse practice of the other discourses here presented. However, the frame of this study is to narrow to evaluate if such a change has actually taken place.

    The study also shows that the different discourses often have different meanings about what the user wants and needs. There might be a risk that the position “user” is being exploited to legitimate the mission that each discourse claims to be the most important for the library.

    HIV is a real and present problem currently facing Southern and Eastern Africa. Previous research has shown how gender inequality and religion both play a central role in explaining the prevalence of HIV and AIDS. Southern and Eastern Africa has a highly religious population, and since religious communities play an important role in people’s lives, these communities could have the potential to mitigate the currently ongoing HIV epidemic. Youths in urban areas are a key group demographic in stopping the spread of HIV. Rwanda have worked extensively with gender equality and empowering women.

    Several studies have examined gender norms in Southern and Eastern Africa, especially in areas with a high HIV-prevalence. However, there is a lack of research examining social structures related to masculinity and femininity among religious urban youth. This study aims to expand our understanding of the gender norms of Christian urban youths in Southern and Eastern Africa, and how the present of the harmful gender norms affects the spread of HIV within this demographic. Urban youths are one of the groups that most affected by HIV in Southern and Eastern Africa, which is why this study relies on a field study is based on qualitative interviews among people between the ages of 18-30 living in Rwanda’s capital Kigali. Results indicate that while young women have begun to challenge the gendered norms attributed to them, and are increasingly encouraged to do so, young men remained confined to more traditional gender norms. Strong masculine gender norms are still present and these norms have a negative impact on health seeking behavior; thus, the spread of HIV is likely to here be a gendered process.

    Research in the field of fictional and possible worlds examines the real and its hypothetical counterparts. The interaction between the actual and the fictional is a cause of debate within this field, and includes questions concerning the ontological status of fictional characters and their relation to reality. The following discussion will engage current positions in this debate. These include questions of reference regarding the correlation between fictional characters and actual personalities. Studying the transmedial migration of character properties from fictional worlds into the actual world engages with the possible as dependent on the actual, as well as the influence fiction can have on reality, by demonstrating how individual characters are perceived as packages of properties, some of which we identify and recognize as adaptable to our own behavior. Transmedial migration requires compatibility between different media. Accordingly, it is explained through the direct correspondence of fictional properties to actual properties, and the indirect correspondence of fictional characters to actual people. I am claiming that an interaction can be observed between different media, such as fictional worlds and the actual world, with particular emphasis on the example of fictional characters and their properties. In order to comprehend this we need a robust framework and the model that I am proposing here comprises the essential elements for such a framework. The transmedial migration of character properties from a textual medium, such as a Sherlock Holmes story, into the physical, social medium of the actual world is the action of adapting a fictional character’s package of properties into an actual person’s behavior. The agency of actual people in adapting fictional character properties to their corporal, social actions is what constitutes transmedial migration. This is a specific example of behavioral learning that recognizes certain behavior by the means of a label or trademark that is acquired from a fictional character. It is conceivable that any number of behavioral attributes, such as attitudes or habits, could be scientifically proven to have transmedially migrated by means of experimentation. Nevertheless, culturally and socially, it is only the definite identification of such character properties that substantiates my argument of transmedial migration through adaptation.

    Abstract [en]

    The aim of the study was to investigate how Swedish teachers and student teachers of Swedish vary in their assessment of a pupil’s text, in judging both the text as a whole and its parts. In the study the informants were asked to assess a pupil’s text (a text presenting an argument) from the national examination in Swedish 1 with the aid of an assessment matrix and then complete a questionnaire assessing the text as a whole and in its parts. The responses to the questionnaire were analysed statistically with a focus on how the assessments varied. A sociocultural and situated perspective was applied in the study, along with psychometry and the theory of discourses of writing, to give more perspectives on the results. The study found that the assessments varied between grades C and A for the text as a whole and between E and A for the aspects of argumentation, content and critical reading, contextual signals and reference connectors, introduction, conclusion, situational adaptation and self-sustaining. The study also found that the student teachers were generally stricter in their assessment. The greatest variations in the student teachers’ assessment were found to concern aspects of the communication discourse, while in the teachers’ assessment it was aspects of the construction discourse that revealed the greatest variation. The greatest difference between the two groups concerned aspects of the correction discourse.

    Abstract [en]

    This essay explores gender roles in The Heart is a Lonely Hunter (1940) by American author Carson McCullers. Theories and texts by Judith Butler, Nancy Chodorow, Raewyn Connell, Don Zimmerman, and Candice West among others, are used to support the thesis statement that stereotypical gender norms serve to compromise the main character Mick Kelly’s identity formation and her early sexual experiences. One important element of this discussion is the idea that gender is socially constructed rather than biologically given. Moreover, it is argued that gender is something that a person does repeatedly according to a strict set of socially constructed regulations. Based on the premise that gender is performativity, the conclusion is drawn that Mick Kelly’s ability to create her own identity within her gender-free world of music is severely diminished. In short, adherence to conventional gender norms makes her go from being a loner to being socially accepted as an equal among her peers; and from being a leader to being a follower, especially regarding her sexual relations.

    Speech Errors are the most widely recognized and discussed type of Language

    Processing Errors. They have been included as a research topic in many fields of study,

    e.g. cognitive linguistics, psychology and medicine. These studies have shown that

    speech errors are inevitable and very common: they can be observed in every kind of

    utterance, regardless of its formality or speakers’ age, socioeconomic background or

    environmental surroundings. Even though they are so ubiquitous, they are usually not

    paid attention to. Nevertheless, they might be representing a way of understanding how

    the human brain functions and why we dysfunction at times.

    In this paper, selected speech error examples from Fromkin’s Speech Error

    Database were analyzed in terms of the changes in meanings from target utterances into

    error utterances and the probable causes of the errors with the aim to discover any

    patterns of occurrence among erroneous speech. The focus of the examples has been

    lexical errors in nouns and adjectives.

    According to results of the analysis, contextual and environmental factors appear to

    contribute to the making of the errors in many different ways, along with the speakers’

    internal thoughts and representations of phenomena related to the utterances. These

    contributions could be accounted for various reasons. Along the keywords included in

    the search for patterns, distinctive features may only be observed in examples of

    opposite meaning. Thus, speech errors seem to have no typical ways of occurrence; still,

    some observable similarities among examples may be useful in further studies.
