Brinner "förorten"?: Om sociala konflikter i Botkyrka och Huddinge2014Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [da]

Beyond the Piraeus Lion: East Norse Studies from Venice2017Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

East Norse philology – the study of Old Danish, Old Swedish, and Old Gutnish – continues to attract scholarly attention from around the world. Beyond the Piraeus Lion comprises fourteen articles on a vast number of topics by researchers from Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, and the USA. They are based on a selection of the papers given at the Second International Conference for East Norse Philology held at Ca’Foscari University ofVenice in November 2015. The volume covers subjects ranging from codicology and material philology to text transmission and reception, from women’s literacy in medieval Sweden to studies of Old Danish lexicon, and from Bible translations to Old Swedish poetics. In all, there are five sections in the volume – Palaeography, Codicology, and Editing; Manuscript Studies; Vocabulary and Style; Literature and Writing; Bibles and Translations – that all demonstrate the breadth and vitality of East Norse philology. The book is the second volume published by Selskab for Østnordisk Filologi · Sällskap för östnordisk filologi, established in Uppsala in 2013.

The Jewish-Christian Encounter in Medieval Preaching2014Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This book explores the complexity of preaching as a phenomenon in the medieval Jewish-Christian encounter. This was not only an "encounter" as physical meeting or confrontation (such as the forced attendance of Jews at Christian sermons that took place across Europe), but also an "imaginary" or theological encounter in which Jews remained a figure from a distant constructed time and place who served only to underline and verify Christian teachings. Contributors also explore the Jewish response to Christian anti-Jewish preaching in their own preaching and religious instruction.

Fear and Loathing in the North: Jews and Muslims in Medieval Scandinavia and the Baltic Region2015Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Due to the scarcity of sources regarding actual Jewish and Muslim communities and settlements, there has until now been little work on either the perception of or encounters with Muslims and Jews in medieval Scandinavia and the Baltic Region. The volume provides the reader with the possibility to appreciate and understand the complexity of Jewish-Christian-Muslim relations in the medieval North. The contributions cover topics such as cultural and economic exchange between Christians and members of other religions; evidence of actual Jews and Muslims in the Baltic Rim; images and stereotypes of the Other.

The volume thus presents a previously neglected field of research that will help nuance the overall picture of interreligious relations in medieval Europe.

Scandinavia and Europe 800–1350: Contact, Conflict and Coexistence2004Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This volume examines the various forms of contact between Scandinavia and the rest of Europe from 800 to 1350. It consists of twenty-five papers from international scholars specialising in archaeology, onomastics, literature, art history, epigraphy, religious history and linguistics. The volume is innovative in three respects: (i) in transcending conventional historical boundaries, by bringing together work on both the viking and medieval periods; (ii) by examining the ways in which mainland Europe influenced Scandinavia (e.g. kingship, law and social organisation; and classical and continental literary traditions); and (iii) by synthesising all the material for an English-language readership for the first time. The broader timespan of investigation illustrates the changing nature of contact and the gradual integration of Scandinavia into European society: by 1350 Scandinavia was no longer a heathen outpost on the periphery of the known world, but an integral part of Western Christendom. The cultural impact of mainland Europe on Scandinavia, frequently mediated through religious channels, although less dramatic, is shown to have had a more significant long-term impact than the earlier viking raids. The volume is structured around the following sections: Historical and Archaeological Evidence for [Scandinavian] Contact with the British Isles; Evidence for the Linguistic Impact of Scandinavian Settlement; Evidence for the Impact of Christianity on Scandinavia; Textual Evidence for Contact, Conflict, and Coexistence.

Interpreting Shipwrecks: Maritime Archaeological Approaches2013Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Shipwrecks are a key site-type for maritime archaeological research and their investigations have been prominent in the subject’s development over the last sixty years. At one time their value was often squandered, with anything from cursory surveys to total excavations being undertaken for the same reason George Mallory suggested that mountains were climbed: because they were there. Today it is recognised that the remains of wrecked ships, through their distribution in time and space, their variety and their complexity, comprise one of the richest forms of archaeological source material. This volume brings together researchers who explore the ways in which ships can be understood and interpreted as material culture through their wreck sites, focusing on ships as artefacts, as agents, as technology, as society, as ideology and as symbols, as well as on what they carried and the people who sailed on them. Collectively they show that shipwrecks are not just the preserve of nautical specialists but have wider implications for the understanding of human action and past societies.

The editors: Jonathan Adams is a Professor of Archaeology at the University of Southampton and the founding Director of Southampton’s Centre for Maritime Archaeology (CMA) and Johan Rönnby, Professor of Archaeology and Director of the Maritime Archaeological Research Institute (MARIS) at Södertörn University.

Women and Gender in Ancient Religions: Interdisciplinary Approaches2010Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Following a scholarly conference given in honor of Adela Yarbro Collins, this collection of essays offers focused studies on the wide range of ways that women and gender contribute to the religious landscape of the ancient world. Experts in Greek and Roman religions, Early Christianity, Ancient Judaism, and Ancient Christianity engage in literary, social, historical, and cultural analysis of various ancient texts, inscriptions, social phenomena, and cultic activity. These studies continue the welcomed trend in scholarship that expands the social location of women in ancient Mediterranean religion to include the public sphere and consciousness. The result is an important and lively book that deepens the understanding of ancient religion as a whole. With contributions by:Patricia D. Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

A 50th anniversary portrait of the artistically ambitious Academy Chamber Choir of Uppsala is drawn by a variety of authors: choristers, listeners and musicologists, all familiar with choral singing and choral music.

The characteristics of the choir repertoire are extensively described by conductors, composers, Swedish and foreign soloists and instrumentalists. The choir has commissioned and delivered first performances of works by a number of Swedish composers.

It can also be noticed how economic and organizational changes in society influence the motility of choristers, the number of performances in concert halls, churches as well as other circumstances and possibly also the very choral sound.

The choir is invited to choral festivals, goes on tours in Europe and North America and hosts visiting choirs. The choir can also be heard on records.

    Abstract [sv]

Scripts of Kingship: Essays on Bernadotte and Dynastic Formation in an Age of Revolution2008Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

When French Marshal Jean Baptiste Bernadotte was elected heir to the Swedish Throne in 1810, a dramatic dynastic venture commenced. In an age of revolutions, marked by political as well as cultural upheavals, the commoner from Pau was transformed into King Charles XIV John and the head of a new royal dynasty in Sweden and Norway. Although fraught with challenges, the venture proved successful. As restoration set in, and the Napoleonides of Europe fell one after the other, Bernadotte held fast, and today the dynasty is approaching its bicentennial on the throne.

In nine illustrated essays, the formation of a dynasty is explored as it unfolded in media such as ceremonies, spatial arrangements, opera performances, publicity and panegyrics.

    Abstract [de]

Religious Education in Great Britain, Sweden and Russia: Presentations, Problem Inventories and Commentaries2000Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

The Alexander I. Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, St. Ptersburg, was asked by the Russian Ministry of Education to prepare for a non-confessional religious education within Russian post-perestroika schools, and its scholars asked colleagues from University of Wales, Lampeter, and Linköpings universitet for assistance. Within the Tempus Tacis Pre-JEP project PETER (Promoting and Establishing a Teacher Education programme on non-confessional Religious studies) they 1995/96 gave their contributions the form of PPIs (Presentations and Problem Inventories) in which they not only described non-confessional religious education in Britain and Sweden but also clarified those problems this education is supposed to solve and the historico-cultural background of these problems. In relation to these PPIs the Russian contributors described those problems in the contemporary Russian situation which a new Russian non-confessional re-ligious education should address.

The main contributors to the PPIs are Dr William K Kay, Dr Edgar Almén, and Dr Vladislav Arzhanoukhin. These PPIs are commented by Professor Ninian Smart, then at University of California, Santa Barbara, and by Professor Berit Askling, then at Linköpings universitet. Mutual comments between the PPI-groups complete this book.

Revolt and Revolution: The Protester in the 21st Century2016Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In the wake of the Arab Spring, Time Magazine named ‘The Protester’, 2011s Person of the Year. Revolts, social unrest and demands for systemic change continue to spread from the anti-austerity street marches in Europe and the progressive ‘No Borders’ global movement, to protests against neoconservative and xenophobic populist movements. Histories are currently being (re)written and he immanence and promise of large scale political revolutions is as present today as ever on our planet.

As the goals and aspirations of protesters across the world become more heterogeneous and less programmatic, it becomes increasingly hard to say what ‘the protester’ wants and where ‘the revolution’ will take us. This book embraces the ambiguity and heterogeneity of contemporary protest movements, pointing to how the potentials of revolutionary acts reside behind seemingly irrelevant, disorganized outbursts of apparently aimless acts. Giving meaning to the sign carried by a protester of the Occupy Wall Street demonstration: ‘We’re here; we’re unclear; get used to it’.
