    Abstract [en]

This roundtable discussion draws together researchers with an interest of overcoming purely juridical treatment of piracy in their work. Christopher Kelty and Gabriella Coleman consider the aspects of cyberculture, which conflictually engage with intellectual property rights, through various communities of technology practice, including hackers. Patricia Aufderheide and Peter Jaszi’s work on fair use addresses the growing opportunities for creators in the United States to utilize the tradition in their creative fields. Jonas Andersson Schwarz and Patrick Burkart, co-editors of this special issue, have researched user motivations and political activism around copyright and software patent reforms, partially explaining the emergence of dozens of European Pirate Parties, beginning with the Swedish Pirates in 2006.

    Abstract [en]

With this volume, Culture Unbound celebrates its five-year anniversary. This makes a good opportunity both to look back at what we have achieved and to gaze ahead to what we have planned for the future. This new volume, which will be more extensive and ambitious than ever, thus marks a readiness and willingness to engage with some of the most acute problems and complex transformation that society faces. We hope and believe that this not only expresses the ambitions of Culture Unbound but also reflects a more general tendency within contemporary cultural research. In order to better accommodate the most recent developments within the field of cultural research, and facilitate intellectual discussion and critical analysis of contemporary issues we also plan to expand our repertoire of published material. In the coming year Culture Unbound will therefore introduce a section of texts we have chosen to call ‘Unbound Ideas’. Here we welcome academic essays and texts of a somewhat shorter format and freer approach to scholarly convention than our usual full-length research articles. These essays will take different – perhaps speculative or conjectural – positions, or give a new perspective on pressing topics or recently emerged concerns within cultural research.

    Abstract [en]

We are proud to present the fifth volume of Culture Unbound: Journal of Current Cultural Research. This time we have some important news to share. First, the journal’s scholarly success has been financially rewarded, in that Culture Unbound has received two different publishing grants: one from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) and the other from the Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils for the Humanities and Social Sciences (NOS-HS). Together these two grants cover most of the costs for Martin Fredriksson’s work as executive editor, which forms the core of our rather minimal costs. The remaining expenses are covered by our three collaborating host institutions at Linköping University: the Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden (ACSIS), the Department of Culture Studies (Tema Q) and the Swedish Cultural Policy Research Observatory (SweCult).

    Abstract [da]

    Abstract [en]

Due to increased racism many Swedish news sites have adopted new strategies to deal with offensive user comments, such as pre-moderation of comments and more strict moderation policies. Despite this many Sami still perceive that hostile comments about Sami continue to increase on news sites. In this article I discuss possible reasons to why racist comments slip by newspaper gatekeepers. Everyday racism, that is subtle forms of discrimination, often presented as neutral or common-sense facts or as collectively shared and therefore unchallenged racial stereotypes, is seen as one key factor. Others factors could be journalists’ lack of knowledge about Sami history and culture, newsrooms lack of time and resources, journalistic routines and/or reader comments commercial potential.

“Opportunities, but Nothing Very Concrete”: The Challenge Finns Face with Chinese Delegations’ General Level of Interest in Finland2015Inngår i: Asia in Focus: A Nordic journal on Asia by early career researchers, ISSN 2446-0001, nr 1, s. 23-29Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This paper explores the challenge of finding common ground between the Finns and the Chinese in the context of co-operation, trade and inward investment facilitation related to general lack of specific interest displayed by the Chinese. The article is ethnographic in nature and is mainly based on data obtained from interviewing individuals working for local governments in Finland and one of the state agencies responsible for attracting foreign investment. The study uses Speech Codes Theory (Philipsen, 1997) when analyzing the cultural aspects of expectations regarding communication between Chinese and Finns. According to interviewees, lack of serious interest, vague government guidelines, the longer time needed to build relationship, and involvement of intermediaries all contribute to the difficulty to move the discussions to a more specific level of focus. Finnish expectations regarding this type of communication are that it should be direct and task-oriented, because they feel pressure to yield real results quickly and efficiently. Suggested strategies to make the co-operation talks more specific are presenting the expertise areas of Finland, clarification regarding too general terms used by the Chinese, and investing into building personal relationships with them.

Editorial: reconsidering the Carpet Paradigm: carpet as material, motif and medium2014Inngår i: Konsthistorisk Tidskrift, ISSN 0023-3609, E-ISSN 1651-2294, Vol. 83, nr 3, s. 207-210Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this special issue of Konsthistorisk tidskrift some implications of reconsidering the so-called carpet paradigm are persued. This can provide for new angles not only when it comes to research on the Oriental carpet and work on the carpet as motif and medium but also for demonstrating in a further sense how the carpet – and research on it – can be used as a model to understand art and art histories. The American art historian Joseph Masheck introduced this term in his influential article ‘The Carpet Paradigm" (1976). Here it includes analysing the carpet as motif as well as medium. It investigates how the carpet functions as a model for a better understanding of the image in general. Of special importance is the fact that the carpet paradigm forms a crossroads for research on images, textiles, literature, decorative arts, iconography, gender, ornament and cultural transfers–to name but a few. The lines of investigation are interconnecting.

    Abstract [en]

This issue of NORA brings together three articles that could be seen as addressing the question “What is normal?” in three very different ways. These articles demonstrate that this seemingly simple question opens up possibilities for an immense variety of inquiries. All three could be said to be dealing with the making normal of certain heterosexual practices. Two of them explicitly address how heteronormativity (a term well known for the NORA readers versed in queer feminist theory) and personhood are co-constituted, while the third one is a much-needed cartography of assumptions within research on violence and gender.
