Skolbibliotekets betydelse: En jämförelse mellan fyra olika skolbibliotek2018Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Connected on a heart level: An anthropological discussion about interracial relationships in post-apartheid South Africa2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Throughout history South Africa has been dominated by a white race group and during the era of apartheid racial segregation was encouraged as well as an idea of racial order was established through institutionalised racism. Marriage across racial borders was prohibited according to the Mixed Marriages Act. The end of apartheid and the transition to democracy in 1994 meant a radical political change within the country, but the issue of race became a question of social and economic inequality. In this essay I study the approaches and experiences of interracial couples in the post-apartheid society, and interracial couples impact on the South African society. I am particularly interested in the South Africans idea of social order today and whereas racial thinking is still present in the postapartheid society. I use qualitative content analysis to discuss ideas of order in relation to race and my material consist in audio files from interviews with interracial couples, as well as literature, books and articles. In my analysis I discuss cultural and social norms, fear of race pollution, prejudice and racial stereotypes as well as thoughts about unity and humanness. Racial thinking is still present in the South African society although the development of relationships across racial borders has increased since the end of apartheid. The interracial couples in my study notice a certain uncomfortableness among the people in their surroundings, some more than others, because people are still getting used to the thought of interracial couples. Although racist beliefs and power relations are still implied by the surroundings the couples appear to feel increasingly at home in South Africa, even though they live in an in-between world, in a New South Africa.

Traditionella flygbolagens konkurrensstrategier mot lågprisflygbolag2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The study is based on explaining and giving a picture of strategies the traditional airlines use to compete with the low cost airlines. Since the deregulation in 1992 many low cost airlines have established themselves on Europe´s airline market and have taken over large parts of the market. Air travelers have become price-conscious and always searching for the cheapest ticket.

Traditional airlines were outcompeted by low cost companies. In order to claim the market new competition strategies were needed. The purpose of the study is to describe which strategies traditional airlines use especially in terms of service offering to attract customers. Previous research and theories describe competition strategies that focus on service, costs, price, product and Porter´s model.

In interviews with people who have knowledge about the airline industry because of their work we got answers about how traditional airlines use competitive strategies with the focus on service. We supplemented our study with secondary literature from the webpages of traditional airlines. The results show that the best strategy for traditional airlines is to use a mix of different service strategies to win loyal clients.

The shifting role of the Brazilian Military since 1985: A study of changes in the civil-military relations2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis will investigate the development of civil-military relations in Brazil since the democratization in 1985. The two most important previous studies, by Alfred Stepan and Wendy Hunter, will be presented and discussed. They where published in 1988 and 1997, respectively. There is therefore a need for a study that includes the development during the long period since these two books were published. The focus will be on three indicators, civilianization of government, how the role of the military has been defined, and military expenditures. The conclusions are that there are contradicting tendencies regarding the development of the civil-military relations, and that the strengthening of civilian institutions is paramount in order to consolidate democracy in Brazil.

Reading Slowly: A Festschrift for Jens E. Braarvig2018Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

"Reading Slowly. A Festschrift for Jens E. Braarvig" contains contributions from a variety of fields as diverse as Buddhist Studies, Linguistics, Middle Eastern Studies, Indology, East Asia Studies, Sinology, Classical Studies and Nordic Studies, all focused in some way on the importance of philological scholarship for understanding history, culture, religion, language and law. Although their objects of study, source language(s), media, focus and research questions are different, the essays in this volume are firmly bound together by the philological method—in the broadest sense of the term—and the scholarship of Jens E. Braarvig, whose vast scope of interest and knowledge is reflected in the breadth of this Festschrift. With contributions dealing directly with sources in languages such as Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Hurrian, Korean, Latin, Greek and Old Norse, preserved on materials such as birch bark and paper manuscripts, clay tablets, wood slabs, printed editions, and modern day street signs, this volume is not only a homage to the breadth of Jens Braarvig's scholarship, but also a demonstration of the importance of language proficiency and philology for the humanities.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to explore and analyse if films, as well as being a possible tool to develop linguistic skills of the students of the upper secondary school, can be the basis to introduce and develop cultural elements and aspects related to the students’ values. A survey was responded by 36 teachers of the Swedish upper secondary school in order to study how film in general, and Pedro Almodóvar’s in particular, is used in the teaching of ELE in order to treat basic values and cultural content. The results show that teachers use film to talk about culture and some basic values, but in general the films are not used in Spanish classes very often.

"Åldern är ju bara en siffra": En antropologisk litteraturstudie om medicinska åldersbedömningar på ensamkommande flyktingbarn2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay was to examine the justifications of the swedish government to perform medical age assessments on unaccompanied refugee children seeking asylum in Sweden. These governmental justifications were analyzed through Michel Foucault's theory of disciplinary power as well as through anthropological research on classification of age. The empirical material consisted of a selection of websites from different authorities that process medical age assessments. These were then studied through critical discourse analysis. The essay showed that these justifications can be understood as an expression of disciplinary power, where medical age assessments discipline individuals to docile bodies. Furthermore, the analysis also showed that the governmental justifications were partly founded upon western concepts of how a child is supposed to be and what a child is entitled to.

Feeling like at home in airports: Experiences, memories and affects of placeness among Third Culture Kids2018Inngår i: Applied Mobilities, ISSN 2380-0127, s. 1-16Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

When analysed as network places for the mobility of subjects and objects, many descriptions refer to airports as placeless and meaningless spaces carrying no singular identity to themselves and to their users. This imagery does not necessarily fit with those people whose experiences are intrinsically linked to mobility as a recurrent early life style and as a part of their subjective identity. Drawing on affect theory this paper portrays an alternative picture of airports as meaningful places through the narratives made by a particular community of onward/multiple migrants, adult “Third Culture Kids”, associated with the experiences and memories of transiting in airports. By doing it, this article aims to add another dimension to mobilities that regards people’s affections and experiences ascribed to places of mobility.

The implications of learning across perceptually and strategically distinct situations2018Inngår i: Synthese, ISSN 0039-7857, E-ISSN 1573-0964, Vol. 195, nr 2, s. 511-528Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Game theory is a formal approach to behavior that focuses on the strategic aspect of situations. The game theoretic approach originates in economics but has been embraced by scholars across disciplines, including many philosophers and biologists. This approach has an important weakness: the strategic aspect of a situation, which is its defining quality in game theory, is often not its most salient quality in human (or animal) cognition. Evidence from a wide range of experiments highlights this shortcoming. Previous theoretical and empirical work has sought to address this weakness by considering learning across an ensemble of multiple games simultaneously. Here we extend this framework, incorporating artificial neural networks, to allow for an investigation of the interaction between the perceptual and functional similarity of the games composing the larger ensemble. Using this framework, we conduct a theoretical investigation of a population that encounters both stag hunts and prisoner’s dilemmas, two situations that are strategically different but which may or may not be perceptually similar.

Musiklandskap: musik och kulturpolitik i Dalarna2018Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In this thesis, I study how conditions for music-making can be developed, maintained and challenged through government support processes in the Swedish region Dalarna. The research questions focus on the ways music, policy and governance relate to each other, what kinds of musicians and ways of making music are favored in these relations, and the agency and meaning of place. The study is made through participant observation of musical events, cultural policy meetings, and the everyday practice of cultural policy officials; interviews with musicians, organizers and cultural policy officials; cultural policy documents as well as musicians’ and organizers’ public documents such as concert posters and websites.

The musical landscape of Dalarna is summarized as a complex web with pathways that reach far beyond the geographical borders of the region. The cultural cooperation model works as a hierarchy from center to periphery, from the national government, through agencies, regional government, musical institutions and organizers, musicians and audiences. We can analyze all these practices as being part of music, as musicking. But we could also describe them another way, where the practice of cultural policy is dependent on and conditioned by the musical practices it is set to govern. In this way, musicians are always in some way also creating policy.

I discuss genre hierarchies and further argue that music can, or should, not always be motivated by its effects on regional development or its social impact, it also needs to be allowed to be unhealthy and unprofitable. When we support music, we should be aware that it can be a hobby as well as a business, a serious artistic endeavor as well as play. And more often than not, music is all of these things at the same time.

Heritage of death: Landscapes of Emotion, Memory and Practice2018Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Today, death is being reconceptualised around the world as heritage, replete with material markers and intangible performances. These heritages of death are personal, national and international. They are vernacular as well as official, sanctioned as well as alternative. This book brings together more than twenty international scholars to consider the heritage of death from spatial, political, religious, economic, cultural, aesthetic and emotive aspects. It showcases different attitudes and phases of death and their relationship to heritage through ethnographically informed case studies to illustrate both general patterns and local and national variations. Through analyses of material expressions and social practices of grief, mourning and remembrance, this book shows not only what death means in contemporary societies, but also how individuals, groups and nations act towards death.

‘Raising the temperature’: the arts in a warming planet2018Inngår i: Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability, ISSN 1877-3435, E-ISSN 1877-3443, Vol. 31, s. 71-79Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The search for decisive actions to remain below 1.5 °C of global temperature rise will require profound cultural transformations. Yet our knowledge of how to promote and bring about such deep transformative changes in the minds and behaviours of individuals and societies is still limited. As climate change unravels and the planet becomes increasingly connected, societies will need to articulate a shared purpose that is both engaging and respectful of cultural diversity. Thus, there is a growing need to ‘raise the temperature’ of integration between multiple ways of knowing climate change. We have reviewed a range of literatures and synthesized them in order to draw out the perceived role of the arts in fostering climate transformations. Our analysis of climate-related art projects and initiatives shows increased engagement in recent years, particularly with the narrative, visual and performing arts. The arts are moving beyond raising awareness and entering the terrain of interdisciplinarity and knowledge co-creation. We conclude that climate-arts can contribute positively in fostering the imagination and emotional predisposition for the development and implementation of the transformations necessary to address the 1.5 °C challenge.

Framing has previously been studied in the field of pandemic preparedness and global health governance and influenza pandemics have usually been framed in terms of security and evidence-based medicine on a global scale. This paper is based on the pandemic preparedness plans, published after 2009, from eight European countries. We study how pandemic preparedness is framed and how pandemic influenza in general is narrated in the plans. All plans contain references to ‘uncertainty’, ‘pandemic phases’, ‘risk management’, ‘vulnerability’ and ‘surveillance’. These themes were all framed differently in the studied plans. The preparedness plans in the member states diverge in ways that will challenge the ambition of the European Union to make the pandemic preparedness plans interoperable and to co-ordinate the member states during future pandemics.

Quantifying Land Use in Past Societies from Cultural Practice and Archaeological Data2018Inngår i: Land, ISSN ISSN 2073-445X, Vol. 7, nr 1, artikkel-id 9Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Quantitative reconstructions of past land use facilitate comparisons between livelihoods in space and time. However, comparison between different types of land use strategies is challenging as land use has a multitude of expressions and intensities. The quantitative method presented here facilitates the exploration and synthetization of uneven archaeological and textual evidence from past societies. The approach quantifies the area required for habitation, agriculture, arboriculture, pasturage, and fuel supply, based on a combination of archaeological, historical, ethnographic and modern evidence from the relevant geographical region. It is designed to stimulate discussion and can be used to test a wide range of hypotheses regarding local and regional economies, ancient trade and redistribution, and the resilience and/or vulnerability of past societies to environmental change. The method also helps identify where our gaps in knowledge are in understanding past human–environment interaction, the ecological footprint of past cultures and their influence on the landscape in a transparent and quantitative manner. The present article focuses especially on the impact of dietary estimates and crop yield estimates, two main elements in calculating land use in past societies due to their uncertainty as well as their significant impact on calculations. By employing archaeological data, including botanical, zoological and isotopic evidence, alongside available textual sources, this method seeks to improve land use and land cover change models by increasing their representativeness and accuracy.

Bank Identity:: Banks, ID Cards, and the Emergence of a Financial Identification Society in Sweden2018Inngår i: Enterprise & society, ISSN 1467-2227, E-ISSN 1467-2235Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Today nearly the entire adult population in Sweden uses a digital BankID for more purposes than only financial ones. Issuing identity documents is commonly perceived as a task for state authorities, but in Swedish society banks play a dominant role as identificators. The first contribution of this article is that it explains this unique emergence of bank identity and traces the historical roots of a financial identification society to the mid-1960s. Banks started issuing standardized identity cards as a complement to the new system of paying salaries and wages by direct deposit to checking accounts, and these cards eventually became quasi-official identity documents. The Swedish story thus contrasts the scholarship on identification and state control. By treating identity as both a socio-cultural category and a materialization of a technology of control, I argue that the formalization of official identity documents for everyday use was intertwined with the creation of new financial identities. The introduction and general distribution of ID cards were parts of a process whereby wage earners became financial consumers, and the banks transformed themselves into retail companies. My second contribution therefore relates to the scholarly narrative on the financialization of everyday life since the 1980s. While the mass move to financial identification in Sweden, highlighted in this article, certainly fits the content of this narrative, it questions its chronology.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to analyse the mediation of cultural memory in Christopher Nolan’s newest production Dunkirk. Furthermore, the audiences are supposed to identify and create meaning from cultural memories they have not inherited. This problem will therefore be analysed in relation to the mediation of cultural memory. A critical discourse analysis will mark the cornerstone of a methodical analysis model, followed by a semiotic textual analysis. Both the discourse and semiotic analysis will be preceded by a socio historical theory of contemporary ideology.

Dunkirk assumes the form of a popular-cultural text itself, and will therefore be analysed as such. With the help of cultural-historical concepts such as identity creation and collective, cultural and prosthetic memory the study in question will supply a relevant contribution through analysis and result. The result itself concluded that Nolan dedicated his depiction of the events at Dunkerque to the people and civilians.

Through heavily romanticised depictions of civilian efforts, small boats in focus, and the intimate narratives of the soldiers’ struggles, the identification easily cements itself in the audience through sheer emotional investment with the characters and the intricate social hierarchies they produce through isolation and exclusion. In relation to mediating a cultural memory through popular-culture film, these possibilities of identification also create possibilities of prosthetic memories to develop, through which audiences undertake cultural memories they are not entitled to by heritage.

    Abstract [en]

The study is a qualitative literature analysis with the purpose of examining how children and preschool pedagogues were portrayed in picture books that take place in the preschool environment, based on gender perspectives. To define the material, books that take place in the preschool environment had been selected. The purpose of the study was also to examine how relationships between children and preschool pedagogues were portrayed, from a gender perspective. And whether there was a difference between the gender portrayals depending on the year when the book was published. The picture book analysis has created an understanding of how preschool pedagogues can work gender pedagogically with literature as a tool, together with the children. The analysis and the results have shown that there are variations in how gender and gender roles were portrayed in the picture books. It also showed that there are picture books that are gender conscious and that some maintain and enhance gender roles.

An Aesthetic Education of Social Theory: Some Comments on Robin Wagner-Pacifici’s What is an Event?2018Inngår i: Distinktion Scandinavian Journal of Social Theory, ISSN 1600-910X, E-ISSN 2159-9149, Vol. 19Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

An essay on Robin Wagner-Pacifici's 'What Is and Event?' (2017). The essay argues that Wagner-Pacifici's book offers a platform from which it again becomes possible to rethink the relationship between system and transformation, and that this is precisely what the human and social sciences need if they are to retain their ability to critically interpret the dense fabric of late capitalist society and culture – a society of the spectacle if there ever was one, a world from heel to head made up by events. The essay assess Wagner-Pacifici's analytical apparatus of political semiosis, and it shows that aesthetics, and literary and visual interpretation, to a large extent explains why Wagner-Pacifici can make a tremendous contribution to a theory of political emergence. Finally, the essay argues that aesthetic theory offers an intersection where social theory and the theory of history may begin a new conversation about human agency, social change and historical experie

    Abstract [sv]

    Studiens syftet var att undersöka och synliggöra kommunikationen mellan pedagoger och de yngsta barnen (1-3 år) i den styrda och fria leken. Frågeställningarna som vi förhållit oss till är följande;

    • Vad sker under kommunikationen mellan pedagoger och barn i den styrda och fria leken?
    • Vad kan kommunikationen mellan pedagoger och barn ha för betydelse för den styrda och fria leken?

The Sound of Streamed Music2018Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

…the majority of consumers seem to be unaware of this, or of the audio quality

they’re missing out on! They spend endless hours experiencing audio at sub-

128kbps bit rates, at the mercy of whoever uploaded the material, without

knowing what it should sound like, without realising how bad it sounds, and

unaware of the artefacts they’re hearing that shouldn’t be there.

The quote stems from a journalist writing in the music recording magazine of Sound on Sounds

and highlights issues concerning on-line music and the affordance such music brings for the

listeners. Currently, music may be accessed via real-time streaming, accessed in complex

conglomerates side by side with other types of content via computers, mobile phones, tablets,

televisions, car stereos and soon to be accessed via new technology housed by the Internet of

Things (IoT). Up until now, the technology of streaming has focused on access, robustness,

interoperability between devices and extensive additional service augmenting the realm of

musicking. Issues of the musical sound qualities and how aspects of sound quality interplay with

the affordance of listening have more or less been neglected in favour of accessibility. From what

we have learned from scholars accounting for digital formats and bit reduction as well as

compression of dynamics in sound, there are some aspects concerning this field that is missing

and as it seems neglected for the masses of music consumption.

The development of smart technology orbiting music has just recently returned to issues of high

fidelity and home stereo equipment. This development could be interpreted as a renaissance for

the affordance of music listening. However, the quality of sound, which embeds the music, is

not solely depending on the recording, the mix or the mastering engineers. It also depends on

the adaptation of sound streams for the final playback device. In addition to these traditional

delimiting nodes of sound quality, streamed music is constituted by numerous things and aspects

such as broadband access, broadband capability, the robustness of the broadband system, the

digital format and the velocity of transmission.

This presentation, which is a part of a larger research project focusing the streaming company of

Spotify as an actor of musical Bildung, will outline a suggestion for a designed method where

different categories of participators will be selected to research the affordance of sound qualities

of streamed music. Affordance of listening should be understood as the nexus between sound

engineering and music cognition bridged by music education. The research should focus

traditional aspects of perception and cognition but also socialisation that constitutes taste and

preferences, and finally educational aspects as conceptualisation, learning and awareness. Four

main themes are emphasised in this presentation; (i) developing methods to describe and measure

sensation quantities when it comes to describing sound quality and the affordance of perceptual

coding, (ii) selecting various types of listeners regarding age, gender, music educational

background when studying stimulus quantities of streamed music, (iii) using the listeners preferred

music to complement music from a control sample of tunes, and (iv) attributes used to

communicate quality of sound and music within various communities.

Between activity and solidarity: Comprehending retirement and extendedworking lives in Swedish rural areas2018Inngår i: Journal of Aging Studies, ISSN 0890-4065, E-ISSN 1879-193X, Vol. 44, nr March 2018, s. 1-8Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The expected costs of population ageing have generally led to perceived needs to postpone the age of retirement. Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews, the aim of this paper is to describe the ways that the possibility of an extended working life is comprehended by persons over the age of 60 living in sparsely populated areas in northern Sweden. While defining themselves as active, the interviewees argued strongly in favour of the right to retire. What are often described as opposing retiree subject positions – healthy and active vs. vulnerable and dependent – were partly transgressed in the interviews. The interviewees performed a solidarity that had the potential of including their future selves as possible objects of solidarity. Another important result was that in comprehending the possibility of an extended working life, morally charged notions of geographic place became central.

Consuming Life in Post-Bubble Japan: A Transdisciplinary Perspective2018Collection/Antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This multidisciplinary book analyses the contradictory coexistence of consumerism and environmentalism in contemporary Japan. It focuses on the dilemma that the diffusion of the concepts of sustainability and recycling has posed for everyday consumption practices, and on how these concepts have affected, and were affected by, the production and consumption of art. Special attention is paid to the changes in consumption practices and environmental consciousness among the Japanese public that have occurred since the 1990s and in the aftermath of the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disasters of March 2011.

    Abstract [en]

Some of the sand dune areas in the bay of Laholm have a protection value from a European perspective. The head questions for this study were: In what way does a beach have value for the people who live nearby? What activities are being practiced in the bay of Laholm during the different seasons? A didactic reflection follows in relation to the courses Geography 1 and 2 in the Swedish upper secondary school. The theoretical framework was Haggett (1983). He talks about the beach as a metaphor for the world. The chosen method was a sound-recorded and transcribed interviews with anonymous adults, who live near the beach in the Bay of Laholm. The result demonstrates how the beach was valuable for all the respondents in different ways. The categories for question one were: Optimism, conflict of interests, disharmony, freedom and beach relation. The result also showed how different activities were taking place at the beach both during the bathing season and off season. The categories for question two were: Movement, location, obstacle, entertainment and recovery. Is there any connection between the fact that the respondents live close to the beach and how they value the beach? If the beach is associated with negativity, does it affect the chosen activity? In Geography 1 and 2, the beach could be a theme to work with in several central contents. Haggett’s metaphor is also a suitable foundation. The hidden curriculum is important in this context - what values is created by the chosen content? In Geography 1 and 2, the teaching should be based not only on the central content, but also with the abilities and the knowledge requirements. Future research could investigate how valuable the beach is for people who live further away and what kind of activities there are at other beaches in Sweden.
