    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Jugs with tubular handles are a special type of ceramics, which is rarely discussed in the literature. The jugs has a beautiful decor and a handle with a channel. The vessels have been interpreted as puzzle vessels, mugs for kids or vessels for libation. The sites where these jugs have been found are very exclusive and the decoration on the vessels can be related to ideas from the Nordic mythology. In some cases, the decor is telling the story about Suttung’s mead. Two places are of special interest namely the ringfort at Sandby borg, Öland and the settlement on the island of Helgö in Lake Mälaren, central Sweden.

The 'semiotics of value' in upcycling2018Inngår i: Advancing multimodal and critical discourse studies: Interdisciplinary research inspired by Theo van Leeuwen's social semiotics / [ed] Sumin Zhao, Emilia Djonov, Anders Björkvall, Morten Boeriis, New York: Routledge, 2018, 1, 165-180 s.Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The last twenty years has seen the rise of global consumer movements that critique overconsumption, focusing on looking at the whole life of a product or artefact. Practices like ‘recycling’ (re-use without necessarily adding value) and ‘upcycling’ (re-use with obvious value adding) are part of such movements. This chapter looks at value adding in artefacts from a social semiotic perspective in order to explore upcycling as branding in a global context. It draws on van Leeuwen’s (2005) distinction between theoretical and actual semiotic potential of semiotic resources when key branding resources, such as typography, shape, materials, and colour are identified in upcycled artefacts. The connotative and experiential provenance (Kress and van Leeuwen, 2001) of these resources are of key importance for our analysis. We look at how resources are resemiotizised and recontextualised and, to various degrees, recognised in upcycled artefacts  that  move between South Africa and Europe. One of the conclusions is that the processes of value adding through re-branding can be described as spatio-linguistic re-branding or sensory re-branding (cf. Djonov and van Leeuwen, 2011).

    Abstract [en]

Log-boats within the Ertebölle culture have had a broad use in the society. From social usesas transport and communication devises to economical uses within hunting and fishing. Thelog-boats have been quite large, larger than log-boats in later periods. With a length of up to 10 meters and a width of 0,5-1 meter the log-boat have been big enough to carry a family andthere gear along the cost. Even though the long and narrow shape of the log-boat have made them mostly suitable for calm and shallow water they have still aloud the people of theErtebölle culture to cross major waters such as the sound between Denmark and Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Bergqvist offers an analysis of how emotional and affective behavior are portrayed in relation to masculinity in the Libro del Cavallero Zifar, the first domestic book of chivalry composed in medieval Castile around the year 1300. This literary work embodies knightly manhood and the performative aspect of lay elite masculinity. Bergqvist finds that the male ideal of the Zifar, epitomized in its eponymous hero, is characterized by emotional restraint and composure. This ideal of moderation, shared with contemporaneous wisdom literature, grounds Castilian chivalry in morality, and creates a distance from the emotionally expressive Arthurian knights of French romances. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the incentive for promoting this ideal and the influence on the narrative of Toledo as the place of composition.

The Vindication of Sancho II in the Crónica de Castilla: Political Identity and Historiographical Reinvention in Medieval Castilian Chronicles2018Inngår i: The Medieval Chronicle, ISSN 1567-2336, E-ISSN 1879-5927, Vol. 11, 64-86 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The first part of the post-Alfonsine Crónica de Castilla (c. 1300) is partly a vindication of the reputation of Sancho II, the king who is known to have initiated the fratricidal wars after the death of Fernando I in 1065. This article demonstrates how this is a direct consequence of the political identity constructed and disseminated within this utterly Castilian chronicle, and probably a response to certain specific historical and political circumstances in the final years of the thirteenth century. The article argues the need to view changes in the historiographical genre during this period, including those that transformed history writing towards a more 'literary' mode, as relevant to the ideological views and projects of the instigators of chronicle writing. Finally, it questions current views of the Crónica de Castilla as an example of aristocratic historiography.

The shifting role of the Brazilian Military since 1985: A study of changes in the civil-military relations2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis will investigate the development of civil-military relations in Brazil since the democratization in 1985. The two most important previous studies, by Alfred Stepan and Wendy Hunter, will be presented and discussed. They where published in 1988 and 1997, respectively. There is therefore a need for a study that includes the development during the long period since these two books were published. The focus will be on three indicators, civilianization of government, how the role of the military has been defined, and military expenditures. The conclusions are that there are contradicting tendencies regarding the development of the civil-military relations, and that the strengthening of civilian institutions is paramount in order to consolidate democracy in Brazil.

Destroying Yemen: What Chaos in Arabia Tells Us About the World2018Bok (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Since March 2015, a Saudi-led international coalition of forces—supported by Britain and the United States—has waged devastating war in Yemen. Largely ignored by the world’s media, the resulting humanitarian disaster and full-scale famine threatens millions. Destroying Yemen offers the first in-depth historical account of the transnational origins of this war, placing it in the illuminating context of Yemen’s relationship with major powers since the Cold War. Bringing new sources and a deep understanding to bear on Yemen’s profound, unwitting implication in international affairs, this explosive book ultimately tells an even larger story of today’s political economy of global capitalism, development, and the war on terror as disparate actors intersect in Arabia.

Reading Slowly: A Festschrift for Jens E. Braarvig2018Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

"Reading Slowly. A Festschrift for Jens E. Braarvig" contains contributions from a variety of fields as diverse as Buddhist Studies, Linguistics, Middle Eastern Studies, Indology, East Asia Studies, Sinology, Classical Studies and Nordic Studies, all focused in some way on the importance of philological scholarship for understanding history, culture, religion, language and law. Although their objects of study, source language(s), media, focus and research questions are different, the essays in this volume are firmly bound together by the philological method—in the broadest sense of the term—and the scholarship of Jens E. Braarvig, whose vast scope of interest and knowledge is reflected in the breadth of this Festschrift. With contributions dealing directly with sources in languages such as Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Hurrian, Korean, Latin, Greek and Old Norse, preserved on materials such as birch bark and paper manuscripts, clay tablets, wood slabs, printed editions, and modern day street signs, this volume is not only a homage to the breadth of Jens Braarvig's scholarship, but also a demonstration of the importance of language proficiency and philology for the humanities.

    Abstract [en]

In this essay an analysis of values will be conducted on the novel Pojkarna by Jessica Schiefauer. The analysis will be done on the basis of Anders Palm's value theory, especially with his two literary characteristics ”emotionalitet” and ”interrogativitet”. Furthermore, an examination will be made on how this novel could be used in teaching swedish in senior high school from a common value-system perspective, and a teacher's and three students' view on utilizing the novel while working with the common value-system. It appears that literature has its own inherent value, but that there are also different external values that are shown by the literary characteristics that Palm writes about in his value theory. The values it focus on in the novel Pojkarna are equality, everyone's equal value and norm criticism. These are the values that are the focus of this essay because it is what the teacher and students choose to discuss during the interviews. It appears that the novel can easily be used in teaching swedish and that it is easy to justify its use considering the school's governing documents. It is also visible during the interviews that the teacher and the students express that they all think it is a good and interesting novel to work with on common value-based issues.

Social Conflicts, Religion and Human Rights Support: A study of young Christians and Muslims in Scandinavia2018Inngår i: Religion and Human Rights: Political and judicial rights through the prism of religious belief / [ed] Sterkens, Carl & Ziebertz, Hans-Georg, Berlin, 2018Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Previous research among young people (Spini & Doise 1998, Doise & al 1999) has shown that attitudes toward human rights are influenced by perception of conflicts in society and experience of discrimination and that political affiliation as well as religion also may have effect. However interesting these results are for understanding what factors that may contribute to grassroots’ engagement in human rights, these studies have failed to consider important background variables such as gender and parents’ education level, but also to include a more nuanced operationalization of religion. Drawing on data gathered in Norwegian and Swedish metropolitan upper secondary schools (n=2044) this article therefore aims to replicate earlier research correcting for these research gaps. The analysis showed that while religion had a limited effect on attitudes toward political and judicial rights, controlled for background variables, the effect of experienced discrimination and perception of conflicts related to ethnicity seemed to add significantly to the models. It was also shown that Christians did not report more discrimination related to ideology and ethnicity than non-religious, but that Muslims on the other hand did report more discrimination both related to ideology and ethnicity than others. This study has shown that there is a relation between such perceived discrimination and attitudes toward political and human rights.

Punctum of the contemporary past2018Inngår i: Clashes of Time: The Contemporary Past as a Challange for Archaeology / [ed] Jean-Marie Blaising, Jan Driessen, Jean-Pierre Legendre, Laurent Olivier, Louvain-la-Neuve: Presses universitaires de Louvain , 2018, 221-229 s.Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A recurring question is what the archaeology of the contemporary past has contributed to our historical knowledge of the 20th century: what do we know now that we didn’t know before? This may indeed be a relevant question, but it is also too limited to do justice in an evaluation of the field. The scope of the archaeology of the contemporary past is not restricted to the adding to general historical knowledge; it is also to investigate how the material world influences our lives and shapes our understanding of the past. Roland Barthes’ concepts studium and punctum may be used to discuss the difference between a more conventional historical study of the contemporary past and an archaeological one. While the studium speaks to our intellect, the punctum addresses our emotions. The punctum is something that catches our attention; it is something we add ourselves but, according to Barthes: ‘what is nonetheless already there’. This paradox highlights the relation between what is in the eye of the beholder and what is governed by the material itself and therefore is beyond interpretation. I suggest that the punctum we find in the study of the contemporary past constitute a central aspect of general relevance for the archaeological discipline.

    Abstract

This book analyses the impact of HIV and AIDS on performance in the twenty-first century from an international perspective. It marks a necessary reaffirmation of the productive power of performance to respond to a public and political health crisis and act as a mode of resistance to cultural amnesia, discrimination and stigmatisation. It sets out a number of challenges and contexts for HIV and AIDS performance in the twenty-first century, including: the financial interests of the pharmaceutical industry; the unequal access to treatment and prevention technologies in the Global North and Global South; the problematic division between dominant (white, gay, urban, cis-male) and marginalised narratives of HIV; the tension between a damaging cultural amnesia and a potentially equally damaging partner ‘AIDS nostalgia’; the criminalisation of HIV non-disclosure; and, sustaining and sustained by all of these, the ongoing stigmatisation of people living with HIV.

This collection presents work from a vast range of contexts, grouped around four main areas: women’s voices and experiences; generations, memories and temporalities; inter/national narratives; and artistic and personal reflections and interventions.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Persuasion in social media: A study of Instagram influencers' usage of persuasive speech acts2018Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how different fitness Instagram influencers use persuasive speech acts in their marketing posts. Another aim is to look at the similarities and differences between the influencers’ use of linguistic strategies and speech acts. A study was conducted on 200 Instagram posts from four different fitness influencers. A total of 638 speech acts were coded using a typology by John Searle (1979). The typology consists of the speech acts representatives, directives, commissives, expressives and declaratives. Two speech acts were also added by the researchers; inquires and quotations. Furthermore, the speech acts were also coded for sentence forms (declarative, imperative and interrogative) and also whether they were direct or indirect speech acts. The study also discusses the different aspects of online communication and how these might affect someone’s marketing decisions. This shows that the language someone uses online might affect his or her online identity. There was also a comparison of the results to identify similarities and differences among the selected influencers. The results show a variation of usage of Searle’s (1979) speech acts. All speech acts were used at least once but directives showed the highest frequency among all influencers since they would often command or request their followers to perform a certain action. Another result was that many of the speech acts had a certain sentence structure but a different intention or function, namely, they were indirect speech acts. The intention and function of these speech acts were often to persuade the audience and were therefore persuasive speech acts.

Justifying Antibiotic Resistance Interventions: Uncertainty, Precaution and Ethics2018Inngår i: Ethics and Drug-Resistant Infections:  Collective Responsibility for Global Public Health / [ed] Jamrozik E. och Selgelid M.J, Springer, 2018, 5Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter charts and critically analyses the ethical challenge of assessing how much (and what kind of) evidence is required for the justification of interventions in response antibiotic resistance (ABR), as well as other major public health threats. Our ambition here is to chart and briefly discuss main issues, and point to ways in which these need to be further advanced in future research. This will result in a tentative map of complications, underlying problems and possible challenges. This map illustrates that the ethical challenges in this area are much more complex and profound than is usually acknowledged, leaving no tentatively plausible intervention package free of downsides. This creates potentially overwhelming theoretical conundrums when trying to justify what to do. We therefore end by pointing out two general features of the complexity we find to be of particular importance, and a tentative suggestion for how to create a theoretical basis for further analysis.

Using Audiovisual Translation to Track Language Planning Developments: Flemish Public Broadcasting Subtitles from 1995 to 20122018Inngår i: Fast-Forwarding with Audiovisual Translation / [ed] Jorge Díaz Cintas, Kristijan Nikolić, Bristol: Multilingual Matters, 2018, 212-222 s.Kapittel i bok, del av antologi (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter, describing interdisciplinary research, links audiovisual translation, lexicography and corpus linguistics with sociolinguistics, presenting a useful example of how audiovisual translation studies can make a contribution to the field of sociolinguistics. Given the ever-increasing presence of the audiovisual media, especially in the lives of the younger generation, it is important for sociolinguists to attend to what is happening to language in, and as a result of, this media. In the digital age, the impact of the published written word is weakened, not least because subtitles have become the most dominant written text type read in many smaller European language areas. It follows that the subtitled word may play a significant, if sometimes underestimated, language planning role. In the research presented here, the case study relates to subtitles in a small, pluricentric European language, namely Dutch. Using corpus linguistics techniques, it has been possible to track trends relating to the use of the Belgian variety of Dutch in interlingual subtitles in Flemish public broadcasting (VRT) fiction programmes. The transnational Dutch publishing industry’s established practice has been one of consistently avoiding Belgian Dutch features and this has had ramifications for Belgian authors and translators. Since 1998, VRT has changed its language policy and been officially committed to using more Belgian Dutch lexical variants. Therefore, this diachronic study seeks to establish whether, and if so, to what extent, VRT’s subtitled texts, between 1995 and 2012, have in practice included more marked Belgian Dutch lexical items, thus providing an important counterbalance to published Dutch texts and contributing to the development of a richer, more inclusive Dutch written standard. This research yields concrete new data and demonstrates how productive links can be forged between audiovisual translation (subtitling) and corpus linguistics, on the one hand, and sociolinguistics (language planning and minority media studies), on the other.

Rethinking Debt: The Evolution of Private Credit Markets in Preindustrial France2018Inngår i: Social science history, ISSN 0145-5532, E-ISSN 1527-8034, Vol. 42, nr 2Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This paper focuses on traditional private credit markets in eighteenth-century France through the examination of notarized loan deeds and to a lesser extent civil court records. It examines in particular how credit markets functioned and how they developed in the eighteenth century. It argues that traditional credit markets featured norms of solidarity, cooperation and fairness, and allowed considerable flexibility and input from both creditors and debtors. But in the middle of the eighteenth century, this market experienced several major changes. Not only did the volume of exchange and the number of notarized credit contracts dramatically increase, engendering a standardization of contracts and a greater resort to external institutions, but a new group of investors modified the traditional norms and practices of exchange. This paper concludes that the private credit market shifted from an institution in which input, negotiation and flexibility prevailed to a more rigid institution in which rules and rigour applied.

Reading and the Profession: On the Literary Education of English School Teachers2018Inngår i: Acta Didactica Norge - tidsskrift for fagdidaktisk forsknings- og utviklingsarbeid i Norge, ISSN 1504-9922, E-ISSN 1504-9922Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The article addresses the question of how English departments best can teach literature and literary reading to future upper-secondary school teachers of English. It approaches the question in terms of the literary scholar’s contribution to the professional education and practice of school teachers in Sweden. The article combines metacognitive analyses of disciplinary ways of thinking with profession theory to reflect on the literary content knowledge upper secondary school teachers need for their teaching practice. It outlines key differences between the understanding of what reading literature entails in academia and in upper secondary education, respectively, and it points out that current academic practices for teaching literature rely on a narrow understanding of what school teachers need to know about literature and literary reading to exercise their professional judgement concerning literature in the language classroom. Advocating a change in our academic teaching practices, the article proposes that literary debates over reading also be incorporated and that the principles and procedures underpinning professional modes of reading literature be explicitly articulated. This means verbalizing underlying theoretical assumptions about the value of literature and of reading it and explicating interpretative conventions and tools, alongside the skills, involved in literary reading. Such a teaching practice, the article posits, is not merely key to developing school teachers’ content knowledge regarding literature and reading. It is also a prerequisite for the development of their pedagogical reasoning when it comes to the uses of literature and to the affordances and limitations of literary reading in the school classroom.

The Narrator Who Wasn’t There: Philip Roth’s The Human Stain and the Discontinuity of Narrating Characters2018Inngår i: Narrative (Columbus, Ohio), ISSN 1063-3685, E-ISSN 1538-974X, Vol. 26, nr 1, 17-38 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

By discussing The Human Stain by Philip Roth, this article aims toquestion the standard view of fictional narratives as being told by a narrator and as beingformal imitations of natural narrative discourse. In my discussion on Roth’s novel,I demonstrate how the concept of the narrator can start to produce interpretations ofa literary work. Although critics discussing this particular novel are not always narratologists, the concept is theory-laden and therefore presents a preconceived notionof who the narrator is as well how to approach so-called first-person fiction. In TheHuman Stain, the character of Nathan Zuckerman appears as a narrating-I, yet attainsdifferent functions throughout the literary work, besides that of “telling.” By using thisexample, I argue for a rhetorical and aesthetic approach to narrating characters. Narratingcharacters are viewed as products of the authorial discourse rather than producersof narrative discourse or sources of narrative information. The topic discussedin this article is thus an example of the conflict between certain narratological coreconcepts, defined within a given theoretical paradigm, and the practice of reading narrativefiction. The rules and conventions governing that practice should be the focusfor any rhetorical approach to fiction, yet narratological distinctions might contradictour readerly responses and appear counterintuitive to how literary works communicatewith us as readers of literary fiction, as the reception of Roth’s novel demonstrates.

Minority language place-names: A practice-oriented study of the establishment of the South Sami Kraapohke in Swedish Lapland2018Inngår i: Names, ISSN 0027-7738, E-ISSN 1756-2279, Vol. 66Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The implementation of the Swedish minority policy has resulted in the national minority languages having been visualized. But what minority language place-names should be put on road signs together with the Swedish names?

This article is focused on the establishment of the Sami toponym for Dorotea in southern Swedish Lapland. The question is which of the following Sami names should be adopted as the official name: Birjevahne (< Sw. Bergvattnet), Döörte (< Sw. Dorotea), or the original South Sami Kraapohke.

This practice-oriented study illustrates the problems involved in finding out how Sami names are used in living language. Such problems generally arise when place-names are handed down by small language communities.

The establishment of the Sami name Kraapohke illustrates the complicated questions that arise when working with minority language place-names and the identity processes associated with such names.

Climate and environmental science denial: A review of the scientific literature published in 1990–20152018Inngår i: Journal of Cleaner Production, ISSN 0959-6526, E-ISSN 1879-1786, Vol. 167, 229-241 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Denial of scientific findings is neither a new nor an unexplored phenomenon. In the area of environmental science and policy though, the research on denial has not been systematically summarized and analyzed. This article reviews 161 scientific articles on environmental and climate science denial published in peer reviewed international journals in the last 25 years and aims to both identify research gaps and enable learning on the phenomenon. Such knowledge is needed for the increasingly important task to provide effective response to science denial, in order to put an end to its influence on environmental policy making. The review, which is based on articles found in the databases Web of Science, Scopus and Philosopher's Index, shows that denial by far is most studied in relation to climate change, with a focus on Anglo-American countries, where this form of denial is most common. Other environmental issues and other geographical areas have received much less scientific attention. While the actors behind climate science denial, their various motives and the characteristics of their operations have been thoroughly described, more comparative research between issues and countries is needed in order to draw reliable conclusions about the factors explaining the peculiarities of denial. This may in turn lay the ground for developing and actually testing the effectiveness and efficiency of strategies to counter environmental science denial. Irrespective of the ambitions of environmental goals, science-based policies are always preferable. The scientific community therefore needs to increase its efforts to dismantle false claims and to disclose the schemes of denialists.
