    Texter i samspel i O. P. Petterssons Gamla byar i Vilhelmina – exemplet Marsvik2013Inngår i: Svenska landsmål och svenskt folkliv, ISSN 0347-1837, Vol. 136, nr 339, s. 7-21Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This article analyses the intertextuality of a chapter of the book Gamla byar i Vilhelmnina (Old Villages in Vilhelmina), by folklore scholar Olof Petter Pettersson. It illustrates how the work is a many-voiced and hence sometimes complex text, with much to tell us about the colonisation of Swedish Lapland.

Alongside a neutral narrative voice, it is possible to make out intertextual references by Pettersson to traditional knowledge of various kinds. There are references, for example, to names in use at the time the author was writing, sometimes linked to a specific geographical area or thnic group. Other instances that are discussed include the written texts cited by Pettersson, which reflect the strict legal and economic perspective of the state, and references to early legends and names used in the past, which the author often traces to old Sami oral traditions.

It also emerges that Pettersson alternates between conveying folk traditions and knowledge, on the one hand, and a more analytical mode of writing, on the other.

"Pat är ett diagnostiskt problem": En etnologisk studie av framställningssätt i psykiatriska patientjournaler2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    ABSTRACT

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The goal of this essay is to describe the cultural identity of five women 20–26 years old, born and raised in Sweden but with a Serbian background, how their cultural identity is formed while living in diaspora. The analyze of cultural identity is based on Stuart Hall and his definition of cultural identity. The concept of hybrid identity is analyzed with the definition of Homi K. Bhabha. Diaspora is defined and explained thru John McLeods perspective.

The study shows that all women had a different cultural identity despite their heritage and the fact that they all were born and raised in Sweden. Although each and every one of them had created a hybrid cultural identity, something they all had in common, but on a individual level.

    Abstract [en]

This paper investigates how children of immigrants from Turkey are integrated into Swedish society. The educational achievements and labour market outcomes of this group are compared with the performance of the offspring of native-born parents. The aim of the study is to explore whether we can observe a tendency towards downward mobility among young people of immigrant background in Sweden and thereby provide reflections on the existing formulation of the segmented assimilation theory. Findings show that descendants of immigrants seem not to be in the process of downward assimilation, that is, social exclusion and therefore formation of a distinct underclass in Sweden. The concept of subordinate inclusion is a more appropriate description of the experiences of children of immigrants.

    Abstract [en]

This paper examines how and if the understanding of wedding photography has changed during the shift of technology - from analog to digital photography. It examines if the changed conditions due to the shift of technology have changed the habits and conditions for the photographers working with wedding photography. It furthermore examines what impact these habits and conditions have had on the pictures of weddings. The investigation is based on interviews of six photographers that have worked professionally before and after the shift of technology, as well as of pictures by the photographers taken before and after the shift of technology.

Use of time and space has changed due to the shift of technology. The change has also had an influence on hierarchy among the photographers. Depending on not only the camera technology but also at the digital revolution of our society. The pictures have changed due to the change of technology, but at the same time pictures of wedded couples follow rigid norms. The shift of technology is to be understood as a shift of paradigm according to the habits and conditions of the photographers.

Managing critical incidents in grocery shopping by community-living people with Alzheimer's disease.2013Inngår i: Scandinavian Journal of Occupational Therapy, ISSN 1103-8128, E-ISSN 1651-2014, Vol. 4, nr 20, s. 292-301Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Aim: People with Alzheimer's disease (AD) remain in their ordinary housing and continue to use public space despite increasing disabilities. The aim of this study was to discover and describe problematic situations and critical incidents that took place when people with AD performed the ordinary outside-home activity of grocery shopping and how these were met by them. Methods: Individual interviews (n = 12) and participant observations (n = 8) with six informants were performed and analysed using a grounded theory approach. Results: The findings are presented in six categories and each category describes different critical incidents and actions used to meet these. The categories were: (a) Remembering to bring things when leaving home, (b) Finding the way to and from the grocery shop without getting lost, (c) Finding a way through traffic when not feeling safe, (d) Finding objects when organization is disrupted, (e) Choosing when a lot of objects and products are available, and (f) Finding a method to pay when payment opportunities are restricted. The core category, “A challenging and unstable process of meeting critical incidents in grocery shopping”, was characterised by reflections and creativity to achieve relative harmony in each critical incident. Conclusions: In conclusion, it is important that relatives and professionals take into account relevant actions to help people with AD coordinate with their environment.Read More: http://informahealthcare.com/doi/abs/10.3109/11038128.2012.752031

    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the history of the Swedish public home help service. The public provision of home help is taken as an empirical example of the state’s relationship with the private sphere. Housework and care work are discussed as political issues and as the objects of a professionalization project. The study addresses the creation and distribution of welfare in the form of public services that are delivered in private homes and analyses how visionary government policies worked in practice. In the broadest sense, the thesis aims to increase understanding of the difficult and deeply-rooted problem of how housework and care work can be made ‘real work’.

Those who started the public home help service argued that it would relieve the shortage of domestic servants, increase the birth rate, reduce poverty and improve public health. In addition, it was believed that paid domestic work, when performed by public home help workers, would be transformed into a respectable occupation through education, selective recruitment and regulated pay and conditions. This ambition, however, was doomed from the start in part because, as this study shows, central actors in the public home help service took an ambivalent approach concerning educational requirements. Professional care work in the household found itself in a paradoxical situation because its central tasks were the same as those all women and mothers were expected to be able to carry out in the private sphere.

The public home help service had a surprisingly short life span. After sixteen years the state subsidy for public home help workers was withdrawn, and new societal problems and political questions took priority.  At the same time, the gender discourse underwent significant changes. The necessary preconditions for the existence of the home help had disappeared. Nevertheless, the significance of the public home help service is greater than its own short existence. Seen in a wider historical perspective, the home help service represents an important example of how paid housework constantly takes on new forms and how difficult raising the status and value of household labor is, even when it is publicly supported and regulated.

    Abstract [en]

By examining instances of adaptation of Sami tales and legends to digital environments, this essay investigates new premises and challenges for the emergence of traditional narratives. The Internet is approached as a place of creation and negotiation for traditional storytelling, and this study illustrates how the potential of the Internet must be nuanced and interpreted in relation to offline practices regarding such materials and traditions.

    Abstract [en]

North of the city of Stockholm lies the area called Södra Roslagen composed of several municipalities. The purpose of this essay is to discover how local informants describe the food culture of the region and analyse why some types of food are mentioned and others are excluded. Several people within the food industry of Södra Roslagen were given surveys asking them to describe the food habits of the area, from commodities and certain dishes to traditions. These answers were analysed using the theories regional food, regiocentrism, revitalisation, placeless food and the idea of viewing culture through the long and the short perspective.

One informant mentioned that professionals in the food industry of the region tend to follow trends from the rest of the world and another that many producers work with ecological requirements. Södra Roslagen was also defined by some as having a taste of summer as this coastal area sees an influx of visitors during that season. Mostly though, the informants struggled with defining the food of the area with a few identifying it as anonymous. This might be due to no marketing attempts having been made to give foods of the area a regional profile or add a symbolic value. It might also be because these municipalities are composed of many families originally from various places of the world. Therefore this cultural melting pot has a rich mixture of global food instead of things the locals would specifically associate with the region. Instead of using a short term perspective and mentioning this foreign food as part of the contemporary culture of Södra Roslagen the informants use the longer perspective where traditions need to have existed in a place for many years for them to be considered as part of the regional culture and contemporary culture is ignored.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Following the Lobster

In this article, lobsters serve as an analytical trace element for a further discussion about the mutual relation between materiality and meaning. Through keystrokes in different historical and contemporary contexts, the first part of the text presents a number of examples of what a lobster could be – and what it could also be expected to do. The second part discusses the act of following as a culture-analytical method, and indicates the benefits that concepts like frequency, density and population can have.

Asking oneself what a lobster could be underlines that lobsters have more than one meaning. In other words, it is a way of helping us to see how the meaning we ascribe to a lobster is dependent on the kind of company it keeps. Lobsters seldom appear alone. On the contrary, they are almost always surrounded by other things, at the same time as they are objects for highly varying practices. For someone whose task it is to actively look for lobsters, i.e. what in the article is called following the lobster, this is especially clear. When lobsters are moved from one context to another, the setting is also changed. The earlier network of objects, people and physical environments that surrounded the lobsters changes shape. For lobsters, every new setting also means a new network.

In this way, the following of lobsters illustrates how translations and meaning-making should be understood as both material and cultural phenomenon. In the analysis, the object is always one and the same – lobsters – while the setting and the network can change several times by simply twisting the lens. All this can be regarded as a kaleidoscopic cultural analysis, where the ambition is to discover something new about the lobster by searching for it in expected as well as unexpected places. At the same time, the intention is also to generate new knowledge about the contexts and activities that are actualised by the presence of the lobsters. This is why the article’s recurring question – which is posed in the presence of every specific lobster population – is, what is the work that the lobsters are expected to do, right there and then?

    Abstract [en]

This article is about diaspora. Through an analysis of the narratives of first generation Iranianwomen living in Sweden, I demonstrate how migratory experiences impact sexuality and howand in what ways sexuality is constitutive to the migratory process. By discussing some of thekey subjects raised by the interviewees, such as intimacy in the diasporic space, contradictorygender discourses, the dominating impacts of existing Orientalist stereotypes, and their senseof (be)longing or lack of (be)longing, I examine how the women experience their sexualitythrough the intersecting and sometimes contradictory discourses.By focusing on entangled issues involving subjectivity, sameness, difference, otherness, domination, agency, and marginality, I destabilize essentialist approaches of identity. Withgender and sexuality as the main subjects of the analysis, I discuss how moral values of thewomen regarding (in)appropriate sexual behaviour undergo various transformations. Theytake part in multiple (Iranian and Swedish) discourses and discard others while striving tomake space for themselves ‘inside’ these constraining norms. The women experience adiscrepancy as a result of being thwarted by two seemingly different cultures – while bothcultures construct discourses filled with stereotypes of so-called natives and outsiders. However, living in Sweden, where intersecting racist and sexist discourses come to life on adaily basis, it is actually not a thwarting by ‘two cultures.’ It is, in fact, a merger ofSwedishness with Iranianness (with all their complexities), along with other characteristics. Itis a complexity within the culture(s) in which the women live.

    Abstract [en]

In the years after WWII the Baltic Sea Area developed into an area strongly divided between East and West. Because of the tensions between the blocs, the coastal areas where strongly militarized and prepared for war.

The new political situation after 1989 propelled an international military disarmament and closing down of bases, training areas around Europe. Since the Baltic Sea Area was one of the heaviest militarized part of Europe the question of disarmament here is of particularly great economic, social and cultural importance.

This study is about the post-military landscape in the Baltic Sea Area with examples from Dejevo on the Estonian island Saaremaa, Dranske on the (East)German island Rügen and Fårösund on the Swedish island Gotland.

The aim of this thesis is to shed light on the process where the military landscape of the Cold War is transformed in order to be incorporated in the macro-regional endeavors for unity in the new Europe. I want to analyze the implications that planning visions have on the everyday life of people. A following aim is to shed light on the challenges that urban planning has to face in this transformation. Three research questions frame the study. The first question analyzes the process where the coastal areas of the Baltic Sea after the end of the Cold War are disarmed and transformed, from a landscape of production of military services and objects into a landscape of consumption for recreation and tourism. The second question takes its point of departure in the relation between planning visions and everyday life. The third question concerns the matter of the past and analyzes what aspects of the military landscape are emphasized respectively pushed aside in the transformation into post-military landscape.

The study is based on interviews with inhabitants and local planners as well as macro-regional and local planning documents, articles and photographs.

"Vi behöver prata om hur jag känner att det närmar sig": En netnografisk studie av erfarenheten att vara döende utifrån bloggen i kroppen min2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Painful legacy of World War II: Nazi forced enlistment: Alsatian/Mosellan Prisoners of War and the Soviet Prison Camp of Tambov2013Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation concerns the legacy of the Nazi forced enlistment during World War II and focuses more precisely on the case of Alsace/Moselle. Many of these French men, enlisted by force from 1942 in the German army, were sent to the Eastern Front and experienced Soviet prison camps.

The aim of this thesis is to examine how knowledge and memories about forced enlistment and Soviet captivity have been remembered, commemorated, communicated and passed on since the Alsatian/Mosellan POWs (Prisoners of War) carried the tokens of enemies or traitors when reintegrating their motherland, France.

Four strategies dealing with the experiences of forced enlistment and of internment in Soviet prison camps are examined. I present how the first and most common strategy, i.e. avoidance, is contributing to an individual and collective construction of silence. Then I argue that a second strategy, the constitution of families of remembrance, is helping them to articulate and narrate their experiences (third strategy). The fourth strategy is the organisation of pilgrimages (emic term) to the former prison camp of Tambov, where the majority of the Alsatian/Mosellan POWs were gathered during the war. This last strategy actualises the issue of the transmission of the war experiences given that pilgrimages bring together three to four generations. Through fieldwork observations of the journeys I show how the pilgrims engage with a sense of the past. They remember and reassess the meaning of the past in terms of the social, cultural and political needs of the present. The importance of place and the aspect of self-in-place are thoughtfully analysed in order to highlight the process of passing on the memory of Tambov.

I conclude by arguing that the agents of remembrance interviewed for the purpose of this thesis are engaged in turning the tangible and intangible legacies of World War II into heritage. This is done by releasing the legacy of forced enlistment and internment in Soviet prison camp from the private/familial sphere and inscribing it in the public sphere. Yet, the agency of the former POWs and their descendants shows how to let pass a past “that does not want to pass” in a contemporary European context.

    Abstract [en]

This article examines visits by French people to the former Soviet prison camp in Tambov, Russia, where Alsatians-Mosellans men were imprisoned during World War II. Because the memory of these prisoners of war, conscripted by force into the German army during the war is disappearing together with the witnesses, some survivors organized in the 1990s journeys to the Tambov former prison camp, called “pilgrimages.” There are currently two kinds of pilgrimages: pilgrimages for survivors of the camp and their close relatives and pilgrimages for grandchildren of former Tambov inmates. This article suggests that the pilgrims, confronting their past, are engaged with a process of identity making, and that pilgrimage provides pilgrims with the opportunity to confront their grief for the dead or their sense of injustice and to let go of the past. The article concludes that with the pilgrimage the value of Tambov as a place of death is re-evaluated.

    Abstract [en]

This study is based on eight interviews with six people. What these people have in common is that their illnesses are not verifiable from a normal medical perspective.

The overall purpose of this study is to generally investigate the importance of music in everyday medical contexts, and specifically study how people with illness relate to their bodies, both in the encounter with standard medical care and with the use of music.

The primary philosophical inspiration comes from Maurice Merleau-Ponty, while the theory owes much to phenomenology. The descriptions of subjects’ interaction with the healthcare system is also analysed from the perspective of discourse theory.

The study shows that music ought to be understood holistically; a complex interplay between subject, object and context.

When patients are treated in the established healthcare, they must consciously adjust their body with makeup, clothing, tone of voice, and gesture in order to be trusted. This leads to the embodiment of the idea of disease, which makes them feel even worse.

The study also shows how music, when it’s chosen and enjoyed can actualize our healthy aspects. The use of music as self-treatment cultivates health-promoting habits which expand our worlds, and can thereby mitigate the illness we experience

    Abstract [en]

Erla Hovilainen-Husgafvel (b. Lund), a Finland-Swede ethnologist (1907-1984) returned in June-July 1944 to the small fishing community of Tankar, an island in the outer archipelago off the city of Kokkola/Karleby, after many previous visits there, to finish the research for her book Ro, ro till fiskeskär ('Row, Row to the Fishermen's Island') that appeared the next year. Her documentary consists of two parts: the history of fishing on the island with the eighteenth-century wooden church and the lighthouse as its major narrative icons, and her interviews with three fishermen and their family members. Although the country is at war, it is only indirectly present in her account. I read Hovilainen's chronicle as an allegory of an ideal utopian world, where the politics is at the hands of the people, where pragmatism overrules both religious and secular conventions, where language is free from hierarchical structures. Hovilainen, I explain, transliterates the speech forms of her informants into distinct personal voices. It is an allegory of a community that should exist.

Elements in games for virtual heritage applications2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The methods of preserving cultural heritage are becoming increasingly digital, and with this development it is becoming all the more open to public scrutiny. The field of virtual heritage and their applications, which digitally preserve cultural heritage using virtual reality, are struggling to live up to the expectations of the public. The virtual heritage field has begun to look for solutions to their problems in other fields, such as that of video games. This thesis identifies 17 elements which are sought after for incorporation in virtual heritage applications, by conducting a literature review of recent virtual heritage research and organizing the findings into a matrix. The occurrence of the identified elements in four different modern entertainment video games is further analyzed and described. The resulted element matrix and game reviews could be used in the future development of virtual heritage applications, and of cultural heritage or historical video games.
