    Abstract [sv]

NS-children are sons and daughters of members of a Norwegian nazi party, that collaborated during the Second World War German occupation of Norway with the foreign regime. In this paper, I discuss recent efforts to articulate in public the sufferings that children in this category had to endure in post-war Norway. Drawing on reflections on politics of identity, I dwell particularly upon how the experiences of the children are connected to recommendations that excuses should be produced, history rewritten, or wider political visions adopted. The conclusion points out a set of issues that I think ought to be considered in the study of processes where marginalised categories are transformed into groups and organisations.

    Abstract [en]

Norwegian Constitution Day parades are annual occasions for public demonstrations of belonging to the Norwegian community. Simultaneously they are events that mark social statuses and categories by including them in different ways or by excluding them from participation. This article discusses three kinds of contemporary Constitution Day parades, inviting participants in their capacities of schoolchildren, teenage students or citizens. Examining their composition and focussing particularly upon the citizens' parade, the article shows how parades, partly against their overtly stated intentions, come to support a narrowly defined Norwegian normality and ascribe to modern subcultural and ethnic minorities a controversial character.

Choragraphies for a new age: On deconstrucion, on Heidegger, on the new psychoanalysis1999Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The dissertation treats the three subjects named in the title in separate sections, each of which can be read independently of the others, though all three of which are also strongly interrelated. Parts one and two offer original interpretations of the works of Jacques Derrida and Martin Heidegger, showing the fundamental logic of both philosophers' overall production to be strikingly similar. The major texts and themes of both thinkers are demonstrated to be structured according to a profoundly systematically followed anti-dialectical logic, and to a far greater extent than is overtly acknowledged by either philosopher, and with far more significant consequences. This structuring logic is implied to carry a psychoanalytic meaning, though this meaning isnot fully eaborated until section three.

The psychoanalytic portion of the text aspires to introduce to a non-clinical audience the basic concepts of the newer psychoanalysis, which builds on insights from the socalled preoedipal years of development, during which the mind is taking fundamental form. The point is to show how these insights can inform projects of cultural criticism, and even potentially support a general theory of culture. The dissertation proposes, in the interest of this last, the thesis/hypothesis that human cultural history is interpretable in terms of an evolution of consciousness towards increasing individuation and consolidation of subjective mind, the determining aspects of which are illuminated by the evidence derived from developmental psychoanalysis, developmental psychology, and the study and treatment of personality disorders. It argues the need for, on the cultural as on the individual level, working to overcome the disposition of symbiotic identifications, which prevent adequate (dialectical) registration of self and other and corrupt psychic functioning in a number of other regards as well. Finally, the dissertation suggests the potential importance of this kind of change for unleashing a deeper existential appreciation for, and broader cultural expression of, our human creative essence.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this Thesis is to analyse technology as a domain for knowledge and cultural experience among Swedish engineers during the 20th century. The aim is to examine how the concept of technology and the engineering profession are related in literature and films as well as in biographies, written by engineers themselves.

Ever since engineering and technology became recognised as an independent field of knowledge at the end of the 18th century, engineers have been seen as key actors in the industrialisation and modernisation of Sweden, as indeed also in other Western countries. The idea of technology thus can be looked upon as a symbol for modernity and the engineers as creators and managers of this idea.

The main material for this study consists of life-history scripts and biographies written by around seventy engineers for Nordic Museum (Nordiska museet) in Stockholm. Using themes such as willingness to break away and change, future-orientation and rationality, the thesis discusses how individuals deal with, and describe, their supposed role in Swedish modernity. Other important materials used are films and literature that show the image of technology and the engineering profession in popular culture. The founding of a royal academy of engineering sciences (Kungliga Ingenjörsvetenskapsakademien) and a technical museum (Tekniska museet) around 1920 were important steps in the professionalisation ofengineering in Sweden. Their importance in the understanding of the concept of technology and engineering is discussed.

There are three theoretical perspectives in this thesis: modernity, gender and class. The thesis is an analysis of modernity as a cultural construction, which is related to class and gender, with Swedish engineers as examples.

The material shows how engineers are clearly orientated to values central to modernity, viz. the individual's responsibility and possibilities, future-orientation and rationality. The engineers' life-history scripts reveal that these are values they expect from themselves. The engineers belong mainly to the upper middle-class.

This thesis discusses how middle-class values am transferred and reproduced in the educational situation as well as in their professional role. Technology has been, and still is, a male domain. This study analyses how technology culturally expresses masculinity, and what strategies women use when entering and positioning themselves in this field.

Rituell process, tradition och media: Socialdemokratisk första maj i Stockholm1999Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation's initial proposition is that political ideology can be embodied in ritual form. The use of Social Democrat May Day demonstrations - a political procession similar to parades - in Stockholm as a tool for creating ideology, and to both maintain and disseminate Social Democratic ideology is analysed. One perspective is that May Day forms part of the creation of traditions, or traditionalisation.

The symbolic body that the May Day demonstration constitutes has been provided with different contents in different ideological contexts. With the first May Day demonstration of 1890, the working class appropriated a traditional spring festival. Newspapers invested it with loaded spatial images as civic rebirth, and it was equated with nature's transition from winter to spring. Until the 1930s May Day was still regarded as a worker's festival. When the Social Democrats gained power in 1932, May Day was transformed into the Day of the Swedish People, employing nationalistic rhetoric. It was argued that this festival had been appropriated by capitalism, but that its true values were now restored. As television appeared in the early 1960s, the May Day demonstration was adapted to this new medium. Renewal was the key word. During the ideological and economic crises of the 1990s, many ambivalent means of expression have been used. Irony is one, playing on carnevalesque themes such as death and rebirth. The demonstration participant manifested criticism of the party by utilising such imagery and exploiting the spatial dramaturgy of the ritual. The appearance of this carnival theme can be explained in terms of the general ideological uncertainty prevailing in Sweden. This stemmed from the murder of Prime Minister Olof Palme, a political crisis of confidence in the early 1990s, and the fall of the Eastern bloc, amongst other things. At the same time, the historical role of Social Democracy has been strongly questioned. One hot topic is wether or not the Swedish model of welfare should be preserved. Even established Social Democrats argue that this social form is obsolete. Traditionalism has now become synonymous with retrospection. Within this context, many ask if May Day ought not become a day for general political issues, without processions. There has been similar questioning since the 1890s, and at times the demonstration concept has been claimed to have become stale.

The first demonstrations paved the way for the worker's entry into "official" public space. Through the disciplined demonstration, the workers' movement showed that they could act in a well-controlled manner, without threatening order. This dissertation analyses the workers' May Day as media event, which has been shaped in dialogue with media accounts. It can therefor be argued that as a ritual form, the workers' May Day demonstration is characteristic of the public dramaturgy of modernity.

Advancing Cultural Studies: Report from an international workshop at Södertörn Conference Center, Lidingö near Stockholm, 4-5 February, 19991999Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

In modernity, culture is everywhere. So is cultural studies, it seems. But cultural studies needs to be advanced, in two senses: to be promoted but also to be ameliorated. Culture is focal in late  modern societies, and should be so in research. New encounters and innovative modes of study are necessary to deal with the new kinds of problems posed by current cultural developments. The international and interdisciplinary field of cultural studies well deserves to be spread, but also longs for regenerative initiatives. There is now in Sweden an option to take a decisive step in this direction.

This is what this report argues for.

Hierarchy, utility and metaphor in Mapuche botany1999Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This book is about the knowledge and management of plants among the Mapuche of southern Chile. Field studies of this extensive cultural patrimony have been carried out over a period of two years, with participation in various activities and rituals in which plants play an important role. Herbalists, shamans and other specialists have explained the practical use and significance of different species, from trees to herbs. The discussion integrates three perspectives: first, the formal plant classification and its resultant taxonomy; second, the practical side of the utilization of plants as food, in medicine and various other aspects of daily life; third, the symbolic relations established between plants and some basic cultural values. The study shows how community rituals, social gatherings and the practice of traditional medicine by shamans and herbalists contribute to the persistence of traditional plant lore, in spite of drastic changes in the local vegetation and in living conditions. A detailed plant taxonomy is part of the understanding of this cultural patrimony. This taxonomy shows that the Mapuche classify plants in accordance to established ethnobotanical principles of general validity. At the same time, such a taxonomy is not emphasised by rural specialists. They are interested in a practical understanding of plants that has a natural, social and moral background. Thus, a proper understanding of this folk-botanic knowledge must move beyond the principle of classification as an epistemological standard and also consider the specific cultural elements found in this southern Andean society.

    Abstract [en]

Librarianship of the Past and the Present. In this articie the author iooks to former times to discover the foundation of modern librarianship. Although we still have far to go Ín the fleld of in-formation technology, the author contends that without the bibliographical groundwork done by previous centuries' librarians, electronic information retrieval would not be as advanced as it is today. To support his contention the author describes the ancient library at Ebla in SyrÍa, gives an account of the bibliographical work of Konrad Gesner and ends by recounting aspects of former librarian of the British Library, Antonio PanizzÍ's work. The article begins by describing the Hbrary at Ebla. This library is the oldest known library in the world. It Ís interesting not only because of the large amount of cuneiform tablets which were found there but also because it gives us a good idea of what library services were like 4.500 years ago. The tablets were classified and shelved accordingly; the library was also a centre for scientifíc research. The SwÍss naturalist, Konrad Gesner, has been called the fírst modern bibliographer. His bibliography, Bibliotheca univer-salis, is renowned throughout the library world. His solutions to various bibliographic problems are still considered useful in many ways. Antonio Panizzi reorganised the British Library turning it into the great library it is today. Librarianship has a glorious past and can certainly look forward to a glorious future.

    Abstract [en]

This is a study of country shopkeepers in Norra Klarälvsdalen, Värmland, in the early 1990s. The aim of the thesis is to examine how the work of the country shopkeepers is constituted in a field of competing ideas about retail trade. The interest is focused on how the work done by country shopkeepers takes shape and acquires its character in existing circumstances, and also on the extent to which the country shopkeepers themselves are able to shape the circumstances in which they work. The material for the study was collected between 1990 and 1997. The core consists of a field study in Klarälvsdalen, where I did participant work in eight shops. This is supplemented with material from a dozen different periodicals in the trade press from 1991 to 1993, and local newspapers from the same period.

In this study I have worked with two overall categories as regards specifying the social circumstances on which the work of the country shopkeepers was based. On the one hand there is the local market, with a clientele with certain wishes and a way of life rooted in the countryside. On the other hand there are the large distribution chains, their range and their ideals of healthy trade. Through their work, the country shopkeepers found themselves mediating between these two domains.

Retail trade is provincial in character, and the assessments by which the country shopkeepers perceived the local market had developed as a result of the shopkeepers having lived with and being a part of the local circumstances. The shopkeepers were not passive in relation to their market; instead they were involved in creating their own conditions. With occasional exceptions, they were part of organized retail trade. The distribution chain gave a social affiliation, and the shopkeepers were offered not only goods but also information and know-how in the form of courses and ample printed matter.

Organized retail trade furthered healthy trade and competition on equal terms. The engagement comprised both a cultural and an organizational order. The work took place both through public debates and through everyday distinctions, with pleasant shops and correct behaviour being encouraged. For organized trade it was a matter of separating unhealthy trade from healthy trade in the interest of the consumer.

In the day-to-day exercise of their profession, the shopkeepers gave a face to the desired qualities that characterize healthy trade. They were close to their employees, their customers, and their shop. It was difficult, however, to run a shop in the countryside, so certain public subsidies were available. This undermined the competition on equal terms that the organized retail trade aspired to. From their point of view, the country shop thus represented healthy trade on unhealthy terms.

The country shopkeepers' experience of the local context took shape in a habitus in which one important distinctive feature was a feeling and concern for the preferences and wishes of the customers. The shopkeepers tried to satisfy these, but they did so within the limits of their perception of healthy and proper trade. In this respect the country shopkeeper was not just the intermediary through which goods were channelled, but also a link joining the local market to the value system of retail trade.
