Gender norms and religion;: A case study of HIV and gender norms among Christian urban youth in Rwanda2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

HIV is a real and present problem currently facing Southern and Eastern Africa. Previous research has shown how gender inequality and religion both play a central role in explaining the prevalence of HIV and AIDS. Southern and Eastern Africa has a highly religious population, and since religious communities play an important role in people’s lives, these communities could have the potential to mitigate the currently ongoing HIV epidemic. Youths in urban areas are a key group demographic in stopping the spread of HIV. Rwanda have worked extensively with gender equality and empowering women.

Several studies have examined gender norms in Southern and Eastern Africa, especially in areas with a high HIV-prevalence. However, there is a lack of research examining social structures related to masculinity and femininity among religious urban youth. This study aims to expand our understanding of the gender norms of Christian urban youths in Southern and Eastern Africa, and how the present of the harmful gender norms affects the spread of HIV within this demographic. Urban youths are one of the groups that most affected by HIV in Southern and Eastern Africa, which is why this study relies on a field study is based on qualitative interviews among people between the ages of 18-30 living in Rwanda’s capital Kigali. Results indicate that while young women have begun to challenge the gendered norms attributed to them, and are increasingly encouraged to do so, young men remained confined to more traditional gender norms. Strong masculine gender norms are still present and these norms have a negative impact on health seeking behavior; thus, the spread of HIV is likely to here be a gendered process.

Alpsten, M. 2016. Athenaeus The learned banqueters. A study of the purpose and content from a beverage perspective

The objective of this paper is to explore the purpose or purposes with which the Greek author Athenaeus wrote his extensive work, The Learned Banqueters. The basis for this study is a survey of the different beverages, i.e. wine, water, milk, blood, beer and gruel, Athenaeus writes about in his work. The objective of the thesis is also to lift up what Athenaeus writes about these drinks. The Athenaeus text has been closed read (close reading) and various questions were posed to the text, a number of structural concepts have been used, and these, together with the above questions, are a good way to reveal Athenaeus’ purpose. The results have shown that Athenaeus probably wanted to write an encyclopedia, for his books show a strong desire to inform the reader about various phenomena and things. But it was no ordinary reference book he wrote but a reference book about Greek customs and traditions. His purpose was that in the Roman time he lived in influencing people to return to a, for him, remote but magnificent ancient Greece.

Conflict, Resources and the Responsibility of Corporations: What responsibility do natural resources corporations that operate in conflict risk areas have to ensure that human rights are respected?2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The thesis aims at analyzing the responsibility corporations, which are extracting valuable minerals from conflict risk and conflict affected areas, have in terms of respecting human rights. The thesis analyzes corporate responsibility mostly from a moral but also a legal perspective. In terms of the moral responsibility, the thesis has strategically chosen to examine the moral responsibility of corporations to respect human rights through the moral responsibility of their employees. The stance, that the thesis launches, is that the moral responsibility of the employees as individuals does transcend upon corporations making the business enterprise responsible for respecting human rights. The legal obligation of corporations in this matter is referred to domestic court decisions, which have ruled that corporations through business decisions have violated the human rights of affected individuals.

The theoretical framework is based on the principle of due diligence, which has proven to be crucial when incorporating management policies and risk-assessment mechanisms within the structure of corporations. Through the analysis of the Kimberley Certification Scheme, which is a state-to-state agreement with the aim to hinder conflict-diamonds from entering into the international market, a lack of due diligence framework suitable for corporations has been revealed. The scheme is flawed as it does not provide corporations extracting diamonds from conflict risk and conflict affected areas with a due diligence framework. The thesis draws the conclusion that corporations are both morally and legally responsible to respect human rights. In addition, the Kimberley Certification Scheme is a step to hinder conflict diamonds from entering into the international market. However, the scheme must be re-examined and elaborated into a framework where due diligence is included. These measures will allow corporations to operate with clear guidelines on how to extract valuable minerals in conflict risk and conflict affected areas whilst performing due diligence. Such an adjustment will allow corporations to avoid either directly or indirectly to finance actions, which could lead to human rights abuses.

Arkiv, ålder och exkludering: En studie av åldersrelaterade normer inom tillgängliggörandeverksamheten vid statliga arkivinstitutioner2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to reveal the age-related norms which control the process of making public archives accessible. It focuses on physical access and visitors at the physical archival institutions. More specifically, it examines which groups are not included in the archival institutions’ target groups and why this is the case, the archival employees’ views on visitors’ needs and the archival institutions’ action space regarding the process of making archives accessible.

The theoretical framework for this thesis is a combination of a norm critical and an intersectional perspective. The main method used is qualitative interviews with employees at archival institutions. Two different archival institutions have been examined, which are both departments of public authorities.

The main result of the thesis is that there exist normative systems within the archival institutions which favour elderly people and people within the academic world. Age also matters less for people within the academic world. Accordingly, people outside of these groups can be regarded as non-target groups. Factors which can contribute to exclusion are also non-western origin and to be occupied at daytime. The explanations to why some groups are excluded are lack of resources and knowledge, a reactive approach, and the institutions’ opening hours. Regarding visitors’ needs, many visitors need help searching for material and formulating their needs, which they can also expect to be helped with. Needs which the archival employees can not satisfy are extensive reading of handwriting or carrying out research for the visitor. In general, it seems that people within the archival institutions’ target groups are more likely to get the exact help they need. The archival employees have a relatively great action space when it comes to making archives accessible, as the policy documents don’t mention this activity in detail.

This is a two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Factors Affecting the Nation Building process in Post-Apartheid South Africa: An assessment of the performance of ANC Governments2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the Nation Building process in South Africa after the demise of Apartheid era. It has primarily analysed, assessed and evaluated the performances of ANC Governments under Mandela, Mbeki and Zuma from the perspective of Nation Building process in the country. The study throws light on the different factors that have been affecting the Nation Building process in South Africa. This study explores a brief historical analysis by uncovering the conditions faced by the South African society during Apartheid era, ethnicity and race relations, how did apartheid programme the collective psyche of the people of the land, its implications in the Post-Apartheid phase of the country and the outcomes affecting the integration process of the segregated society. This work has highlighted the dream of the founding fathers in the Nation Building of South Africa, making of the constitution and its provisions supporting a consociational democratic culture favourable for the Nation Building process. At the same time the study also presents how ethnic struggle for domination in party politics affected the idea of Nation Building, Xhosa Zulu tussle, corruption, nepotism, injustice, inequalities, political repression, human rights abuses, police brutality, extra constitutional measures taken by law enforcing agencies and political institutes, disgruntled and dissatisfied masses all contributed in the creation of a chaotic environment not conducive for the Nation Building process.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to investigate the everyday relationships between humans and smartphones through the means of participant observation and discourse analysis of thirty-one survey responses as well as three semi-structured interviews and one email interview. The discourse that is described is centred around the nodal point of the smartphone as a necessary evil, which is closely connected to the moments control, reason and moderation. Addiction, stress, laziness and stupidity is seen by the informants as consequences of lack of control in the relationship with the smartphones.

Beside control the study shows several cultural themes that affects the relationship between humans and smartphones, such as the smartphone as a centre of gravity where things of importance to the informants gather, a tool to make the everyday life easier and more pleasant and a security object, though its most important use remains that of a communication device. To stay connected with friends and family, socialize and build relationships is of utmost importance the informants and it is this aspect of the smartphone, to connect humans, that makes it invaluable to the informants and that constitutes the necessity in the expression “necessary evil”, the evil being the way it changes communication and human behaviour when not handled properly.

”JU MER MAN VET DESTO MINDRE FÖRSTÅR MAN”: En studie av tillgänglighetsbegreppet inom museisektorn2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Om rasism i svenska nyhetstidningar: En kritisk diskursanalys av ledartexter i Dagens Nyheter och Svenska Dagbladet2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

The Mapuche conflict: A critical discourse analysis on how the discourse between the Chilean government and the Mapuches has changed from 1970-20102017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The issue of the Mapuches conflict has received different reactions from stakeholders and most important, government in the countries where they exist. This issue has gained much attention in Chile, where the Mapuche form the largest ratio of the indigenous group. The issue started more than seven centuries ago when neighboring groups started to invade the mapuches land, the aggressors where mainly Inka. And the reason for invading was that the mapuche land had dense forests and were rich in minerals. The fight for the mapuches rights on these resources culminated with the entry of the Spanish. The Mapuche were involved in a war with the Spanish for about three and a half decades. When the Spanish eventually took over the territory, they divided it between Chile and Argentina to facilitate smooth governance. The Spaniards who succeeded in overcoming the Mapuche had seceded from Spain and had become permanent residents of South America under the new name “Chile”. This meant that they laid claim on the resources and territory in the mapuches land. While the Argentine Mapuche have experienced relative peace, except for the Argentine war of extermination in the 19th Century, their counterparts in Chile have had a poor relationship with most government. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relations between the Mapuche and the Chilean government over four decades. The study will examine the presidential discourse on the issue of the Mapuche conflict under six governments, during the periods between 1970 and 2010. I am interested in understanding the factors that led to the change of narrative from referring to the Mapuche as peasants/farmers entitled to resources as part of their cultural heritage to finally being labeled as terrorists by the Chilean Government. In meeting the research aims, I will examine the historical development of the Mapuche and the factors that have defined their attitude and perception of various laws, policies and government actions on them. The study will employ Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis method where I will carry out text analysis, processing analysis and eventually the social analysis of the discourse simultaneously.

    Abstract [en]

The United Nation’s definition of honour based violence (HRV) in 1999 defines women’s exposure of violence related to honour. In Sweden, HRV was regarded as a social problem in the 1990’s, when women were murdered by their close family members. Loss of honour was explained as a reason for the killings. Ever since the beginning of debate in Swedish media, science has noticed the complexity of HRV.

The aim of this study was to examine how Swedish social services and administrative courts constructed honour based violence (HRV) when law of mandatory care of minors is used in court cases. The lawsuits regarded both females and males, in the ages of 10-17 years old. We used a document analysis of thirteen court cases from 2016 regarding 2§ Law of mandatory care of minors (LVU), which is a paragraph of deficiencies in care of youths. We used the keyword Honour related violence when searching for court cases. We could determine that physical violence is constructed as legal issues when it’s explained in detail, fragmented and when the minor was regarded as believable to the administrative court. Psychological violence included the involvement of threats, threats of physical violence and threats of forced marriages, and was all seen as an integrated view on violence. Honour was constructed as an isolation of the youths, limiting their social and leisure time and the children were controlled by their guardians. According to social services and administrative courts, the control was not seen as age appropriate.

Sanningskommission för Sveriges samer: en studie om förväntningar och andra urfolks erfarenheter på väg mot upprättelse2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

In recent years the field of reparations for indigenous peoples has increased remarkably. Past wrongs made by states in the distant past has become more important to highlight, not only because of the memories of historical injustice, but because of how the past impacts the future, and not least, still appears as structures of discrimination remaining from the past.

As an indigenous people the Saami people living in Sweden have experiences of both historical injustices as well as todays struggle with discrimination on different levels. Mostly regarding their right to be a part of decisions concerning them and the right of culture, language, identity, land and nature resources, fundamental for them as a people. In order to change their situation and to search for redress the Saami people in Sweden have announced their need of a truth commission. The Saami people are not the first indigenous people whom search for redress through a truth commission, but is it possible to learn from others?

With this in mind, my study aim to look at practical experiences of truth commissions in Canada and New Zealand and further, examine what the Saami people in Sweden hope to achieve with a truth commission. Thereafter, I weight other indigenous peoples experiences of a truth commission with the Saami peoples expectations to find out what keys need to be considered to increase the outcome of a truth commission. Where theory, practical experience and Saami expectations connects is where the key issues can be found. Given this, my study suggests that five different key issues must be thought through and shall not be underestimated as they may have an effect on the ongoing process as well as on the results and the aftermaths. The key issues that is suggested is as follows: 1) political will, 2) the role and engagement of Civil Society, 3) the Saami´s own involvement 4) the problem of what focus the commission should have, and 5) the awareness of “tough” questions coming up.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to investigate how people handle and get influenced by the information they get from media in their day to day life. In this study media is defined as television, newspapers, online news channels and social media as Facebook.

To do this I have used a self-composed survey by the web based site “Surveymonkey”, I have also done observations, both participating and non-participating, in my own day to day life. For example: discussions between people both at and outside work. I have also done four interviews. These interviews have been a way of deepening the results that was first seen in the online-survey.

The results have shown that most people are very active when it comes to taking part of the information that media shares. It has also shown that many of the participants in this article feel that they get sad or anxious when taking part of the information from media. Besides this people tends to be more interested in information that can inflict on their own life than the information regarding people in “far away”-countries. The participants were also thinking that media could not be fully trusted, and that it did not really matter if you tried to take part of as much information as possible from different media-platforms, the information and news will always be angled differently depending on which media it comes from. Even though people may distrust media on a generalized level, they will not stop taking part of it. Most of them were of the opinion that it was really important to get them informed and the most impact on their daily life concerned mostly grocery shopping and what kind of subject they would discuss during coffee break at work. Whereas the information concerning war and refugees was a subject that was distressing but did not really impact their day to day life in the way of changing their own lives or making them actively doing something besides feeling anxious.

Licensierade digitala informationsresurser: En fallstudie om Författarlexikonet Alex på skol- och folkbibliotek.2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Introduction. I report an investigation designed to identify the contemporary role of digital resources for information retrieval, such as Alex Author-dictionary. This study proposes that it is essential to see digital resources and their specific place within contemporary structures for information retrieval, that digital resources relate to a broader context. My focus is facts beyond giving patrons access to a specific type of information about authors.

Method. This case study uses integration of qualitative content analysis from interviewees with data analysis. A pre-search interview and data-analysis along with follow-up interviews established some interesting perspectives on Alex Author-dictionary as well as aspects on digital resources for information retrieval. Transcripts of the interviews formed the data for analysis.

Analysis. Qualitative analyses were carried out from two preparatory email-interviews, one with the editor and one with a person who writes for Alex. Another pre-search interview and two following interview sessions, one with a school librarian and another with a public librarian, were conducted.

Results. It proved possible to demonstrate that Alex Author-dictionary as such has its benefits compared to sources from the internet. The results derive from and agree with some previous studies, especially that there is a where, when and how to use different resources. The web for example could advantageously give patrons access to other formats such as video interviews etc. that the library doesn’t hold.

Conclusion. I identify a need to enlarge the scope of how patrons teach users. Users of all ages would be benefited from knowing when to use Google and when benefited using other digital resources of information retrieval. This sound awareness is directly related to users need to develop skills, and then interpret their own actual information literacy. This could take place either in sessions of user education at the library, or from teachers in a school environment.

Det synliga: En kvalitativ studie om lärares upplevelse av psykisk ohälsa hos elever2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Selfies, smartphone self-portrait distributed by social media, are discussed, as a part of a bro- ader photographic practice. Seven interviews are analyzed with practice theory, and mediali- zation perspective.

Selfies are primary not a memory but a communicative gesture, a kind of chat we use to crea- te, maintain and confirm our social relations. Selfies are used by the informants as a way of telling who they are, what they do, where they are and also with who they are. As media tech- nology advances our forms of communication adapts to the new possibilities for communica- tion but also change the way we communicate.

"Sisterhood will Save the World": En etnologisk studie av en förening för invandrarkvinnor2016Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

Cannabis in Uruguay: A case study of the regulated cannabis market in Uruguay2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study deals with the impact of the legislative bill that enabled the creation of a regulated cannabis market in Uruguay as a means to combat organized crime in the country. This study will also explore the hypothesis that this legislative bill changed the legal character of criminality as well as reformulating narcotic issues from being a criminal issue into a public health issue. Analyzing the very specific case of Uruguay’s current narcotic policies becomes a means to explore the ideas that constitute Law Nr 19.172 “Marijuana and its derivatives” which might be indicative of the attitudes in society regarding criminality. This ties into the new iteration of the dichotomy between law and democracy as a result of this legislative reform in Uruguay and the possible new role of legal theory in a democratic country which is discussed in this article.

Humanitarian intervention: a problematic tool for a global Human Rights defence: The concept in theory and practice and the resulting dilemmas A case study of the NATO intervention in Libya in 20112016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The current Thesis sought to identify and analyse the concept of humanitarian intervention in theory and practice and the resulting legal, ethical and political dilemmas. Along with this objective the question is raised if these dilemmas are a reason why the concept of humanitarian intervention is so rarely used in world politics.

Th  theoretical part, that contains the main statements of the existing research about  this topic, will be followed by    case study of the NATO intervention in Libya in 2011.

While some dilemmas seem crucial from a theoretical point of view they turn out to be marginal in a concrete case. Furthermore, one comes to the conclusion that these dilemmas are not the main reason behind the rare use of the concept. The international community is rather reluctant when it comes to inference, as the intervening forces need to see an own strategic and geopolitical interest in the intervention. If this is not the case interventions for the protection of Human Rights are unlikely to be launched.

Att fylla luckor i samlingarna?: Dokumentations- och insamlingsprojekt på svenska arkiv2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Traditionally archives have been regarded as repositories where documents naturally generated in the different processes of organisations are stored, the emphasis being on “naturally generated”. Responsible for the long-term preservation of these records is the always objective and neutral archivist whose task is to make sure that the records will not get corrupted and can be used as evidence. In the past few decades, however, the archival community has become more and more aware of the fact that certain groups, voices and histories – mainly those of ordinary people – are missing from the archives. The purpose of this thesis was to examine how archives in Sweden approach this issue and what efforts they make to fill these gaps in their collections.

I examined three kinds of archival institutions: city archives, private archives and museum archives. By analysing their survey response and project documentation (when not available, interviews), I aimed to find out what arguments they had for and against documenting society and what groups, events or places they documented. The research showed that most public archives did not engage in such activities as most of them did not even think it was their task to collect and/or create new documents. The few institutions that have or have had documentation projects focused mainly on local people and the history of the town they were located in. When it comes to private archives, the attitude was completely different and they regard these projects as a significant part of their work. Almost all of the private institutions I contacted have an active outreach programme where they either create new primary source documents themselves or inform organisations in the private sector about the importance of documenting their activities and preserving the documentation. Museum archives were a special case: since the museums I studied document different places, phenomena and groups the documents created automatically fill certain gaps in their archives. Filling the gaps is, however, seldom the main goal of their projects and they focus more on how the new primary sources can be used in the future, for instance in exhibitions.

The argumentation behind these projects varied, some institutions argued that certain experiences and memories had to be documented before it is too late while others emphasised the importance of documenting our time for future generations. Other arguments occur too, such as gaps in the collections that need to be filled or helping a certain group integrate who, by contributing their stories, can participate in writing the town’s history.

Rytmer och (o)ljud i medieoffentligheten: Musikkritik och house/techno: En diskursanalytisk studie om andlig respektive sinnlig estetik2017Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to highlight different aspects, resistances, and negotiations in urban farming, and how this activity relates to the urban environment. The study draws on material related to urban farming in the extended Malmö region, Sweden (population: 700,000), focusing on interviews with local actors in Malmö and articles published until 2016 in the main newspaper Sydsvenskan. The material is thematized through cultural analysis and potential points of resistance are identified. Giddens’s theories on modernity are utilized to discuss contemporary forces behind urban farming, as well as challenges and structural conditions. Moreover, Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space is used to discuss the material and the relationship between the individual and the public sector in urban farming.

The study suggests that urban farming is perceived as a connector between not only people, but also the city and the countryside, and between the consumer and the produce. These themes can be linked to industrialization and to what Giddens calls civil inattention, but also relate to the city as an improvable structure. The views on urban farming activities expressed by the public sector are mostly positive and seem to, quite often, coincide with those of local urban farmers. Though there seems to be a mutual will to find ways to facilitate urban farming, the organizational infrastructure is not entirely set, which appears to create some friction. The contemporary city is partly perceived as a rigid and organizing structure, where vegetation stands as a counterpart or an alternative, but also as an entity with potential to be redefined, perhaps through the practice of urban farming.

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the relationship between mothers with breastfeeding problems and the nursing staff, focusing on three theoretical concepts: power, trust and normality. Interviews were conducted with women that in recent years have given birth and also have had difficulties with breastfeeding. The empirical data consists of numerous qualitative interviews and comments from two posts written in Facebook groups.

The meeting between the mother and the nursing staff is examined through the lens of a power perspective. Their relationship is not equal, where the nursing staff have the opportunity to exercise power. The mother trust the nursing staff since they are experts and have knowledge, which the mothers in this study do not possess.

There is a breastfeeding norm that says that breastfeeding is the normal and proper alternative to feed an infant and deviations from this are seen as abnormal. The mothers in this study are seen as deviations as they do not follow the norm of breastfeeding. The norm itself is structurally constructed by and derives from both mothers and nursing staff.

Time and waiting is a mean for the nursing staff to exercise their power since the mothers rely on the staff’s expertise and availability to solve their breastfeeding problems.

Democratisation and inequality in South Africa – the paradox: A case study of South Africa’s celebrated democratisation and stagnant inequality2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The thesis sets out to scrutinise the paradox of South Africa’s successful democratic

development and its stagnant inequality. Due to the country’s remarkable transition towards

an inclusive democracy in the 1990s, and moreover with the incoherent human development,

the country becomes unique in its region and therefore a suitable deviant case to study. The

analysis will be built upon a theoretical framework focusing on the dominant party-system,

social- and political trust and support along with the capabilities approach.

ANC have dominated the political playing field since the first all-race election, however

without achievements in inequality reduction and mediocre improvements regarding wellbeing.

The research indicates an erosion in trust and support for the government. If ‘bad

governance’ persist, accumulated dissatisfaction could lead to disillusion regarding the

democracy as an ideal, hence undermining the South African democracy.

    Abstract [en]

This essay is about a region in the northern parts of Sweden. I have wanted to explore areas related to the sawmill that has been in place in the town of Stugun since the 1970’s. My starting point has been that the site is im portant for the people, and I have wanted to examine in what way Stugun as a location is important - in relation to the sawmill. I have worked by interviewing men who are linked to the sawmill called Jämtlamell. The male perspective depends on that the working area is and always has been d ominated by men. The people I have interviewed describe the community as very strong. In Stugun, soccer has played a very big part for the community spirit. The sawmill has meant a great deal to the people of Stugun as well as for soccer. I see this as a linked chain where the two parts may be difficult to distinguish from each other . As well Jämtlamell as soccer are important symbols of Stugun which further strengthened the community. The Stugun etos has been enhanced by these symbols - but also through creating borders to the world outside. The countryside is changing, and so is Stugun. This can be seen when viewing Jämtlamell as a workplace. A clear response when the powers that be are too far away from the people is that hope as well as the work joy disappears. Trust is replaced with mistrust, and hope with anxiety. It i s of great value to the people to see results, working towards something together, to have something to be proud of. Jämtlamell as a workplace is no longer what it once were, but the memory of the industry lives on in the minds of the residents of Stugun. Jämtlamell is something they have all fought for and built up together. Therefore it is not "just a workplace".

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate what underlying causes drive people to take part in the Swedish autonomous left-wing movement. The autonomous left-wing movement is an extraparliamentary mob, in Sweden often attributed in negative terms, considered as extremists. Interviewing six activists has given me the chance to better understand the movement in terms of ideology as well as understanding their lack of reliability in the Swedish government and other social structures. The study also shows a complexity in the relationship between the interviewees and fascists, as well as in the Swedish police and the Swedish migration office, which is based on a combination of ideological values as well as a lack of trust to the Swedish system as a whole.
