    Abstract [en]

    Purpose – The purpose with the study is to develop the understanding of the adoption of robots in private security and how service innovation can be improved to affect this.

    Method – An abductive case study at one of the world’s largest private security companies was conducted to answer the purpose of the study. The study was performed with an iterative process where analysis of present theory was combined with analysis of gathered data. A thorough literature review was conducted as well as eight qualitative interviews which was transcribed and analyzed with thematic coding.

    Theoretical and practical implications – The study contributes to the literature by identifying which tasks robots has the most possibilities to be used for in private security. Furthermore, the results complement current literature by examining service innovation in the previously neglected private security sector which shows that current generally adapted literature doesn’t truly depicts the conditions in private security and has resulted two main findings. Firstly, six innovation characteristics were identified (1) Relative advantage, (2) Compatibility, (3) Trialability, (4) Observability, (5) Complexity and (6) Risk, where Risk is a factor which arises specifically in private security. Secondly, the study shows which innovation abilities that private security companies can focus on in order to improve possibilities of successful service innovation. Practical contributions are given through developed framework which clearly shows what innovations characteristics affects the adoption of innovation and in what way they are doing so for private security. Lastly, private security is also given new knowledge about the abilities of a robot and how they can adapt tasks and work environments for those abilities to increase their chances of successful adoption of them.
