    Abstract [en]

    The use technical aids to in enhance shooting performance in biathlon is not a field where extensive research has been conducted. The use of technical aids and measuring equipment in shooting practice is very limited. Therefore, in this thesis project a biathlon rifle should be instrumented with four different measuring systems to analyze what is possible to measure and how that information can be used to enhance the knowledge for the athlete/coach. Are we going to be able to use the equipment to compare high preforming and low performing athletes to come up with a model with what forces are wanted in the different measuring points. Can these systems be used to optimize the athlete’s shooting technique and shooting materials, regarding the person’s physical and technical conditions. The purpose of this project is to use technology to enhance the knowledge of what is happening during the shooting and be able use that knowledge to improve shooting performance and training methods. The goal with this project is to have one or more systems ready to use that can bring new information to the athlete/coach. The rifle will be instrumented with an accelerometer and a gyroscope on the rifle stock above the trigger, the gun sling (that is used for prone shooting) has been instrumented with a load cell to be able to measure the pulling in the strap, the butt plate is instrumented with special airbag that can measure the total force between shoulder an butt plate and the final system is a trigger that has been instrumented with a load cell to measure the force that is pulling the trigger. Shooting series have been performed in an indoor shooting range to reduce external impact in the shooter, the shooting series is filmed, and the shooting result is recorded to help with the analyzing of data. All four system works to collect data, although accelerometer and gyroscope couldn’t see the rifle’s movement or rotation because the athlete is holding to steady. But their data can be used to show where the shot and recharge happens and, in that way, help to navigate the chart. Because you already see this information on the accelerometer it makes the gyroscope unnecessary. You can see a difference in force distribution between various athlete’s, the systems can also be used to compare shooting materials and see what difference the changes make. This is a field with big potential that could be an important part of the shooting training in the future.
