    Abstract [en]

    Background: Caesarean section is a common operative intervention in the Swedish healthcare where operating theater nurses and midwives, amongst others, is a part of the interprofessional team around the patient. These two professions needs to cooperate to secure the quality of care and patient safety in conjunction with the operative intervention. Caesarean section is associated with several complications and the operating theater nurse and the midwife needs to have a well functioning collaboration to be able to cope with these.

    Aim: To investigate midwives’ experiences working together with operating theater nurses in conjunction with Caesarean section.

    Method: An interview study with qualitative design was conducted, where 14 midwives from two different hospitals in the south of Sweden were interviewed about their experiences. The interviews were semi-structured and analyzed with qualitative content analysis.

    Result: From the analysis of the interviews three main categories appeared; Possibilites and limitations for interprofessional collaboration in conjunction with Caesarean section, The importance of communication and Interaction between different specialist professions. With these main categories seven subcategories belonged, which described how the midwives experienced the collaboration with the theater nurse in conjunction with Caesarean section; To be on ”foreign territory”, To be dependent on the knowledge of the theater nurse, The importance of communicating, The importance of how to communicate, To meet in an emerency situation, To have different priorities and Who does what? – to have distinct working roles in the operating theater.

    Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is that midwives’ experiences of collaboration with the theater nurse is characterized by the sense of working in a foreign place, where there is a dependency towards the knowledge of the others. The communication was of great importance and the collaboration was characterized by how distinct the working roles were, how similar priorities were and the urgency of the situation.
