Kundvalsmodellen: En ökad valfrihet, men på vilka villkor?2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Låneförbudets koncernundantag: -En skatterättslig analys av ett utvidgat koncernbegrepp2012Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Music as mimetic representation and performative act: Semiramide riconosciuta and musical construction of sexuality and gender2008In: STM-Online, Vol. 11, p. 43-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article has been to investigate the question of the musical construction of sexuality and gender in the opera Semiramide riconosciuta (Venice 1745), set by Johann Adolf Hasse to the drama by Pietro Metastasio. Apart from analysing the music in relation to the drama, the method has been to analyse and to interpret the music in relation to the concept of performativity. The investigation has consisted of a comparative analysis between the two main characters in the opera, and between the two singers performing these characters.

At the two high points of the performance, when the audience most likely were attentive to what happened on stage, there seems to have been a performative manifestation of the two main characters musically. The singers did different things to audience and the audience did different things to the singers and indirectly also to the musical constructions of the characters. In this way Hasse, who provided the singers with vocally suitable material, musically confirmed the message of Metastasio's drama: woman connected with passion and man connected with reason.

Opera seria and Musical Representation of Gender2006In: Twelfth Biennial Conference on Baroque Music, Warszawa 26 30 juli 2006, 2006Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In what ways can musical representation be said to correspond to general ideas about gender during the first half of the 18th century? An investigation of musical representation of characters in the Italian genre opera seria has resulted in the hypothesis that music was an important means to reflect contemporary ideas of power and gender. An opera seria consists of a number of musical styles connected to specific affects, situations and characters in the drama. In Georg Friedrich Händel’s Giulio Cesare (1724) the musical construction of the two main characters Giulio Cesare and Cleopatra appears to be an indication of contemporary ideas concerning gender. Whereas the hero is tied to a traditional ideal the heroine does not follow a specific pattern regarding musical styles. The freedom concerning constellation of affects as well as musical styles may be due to her position as main character and as a woman. She is not as the primary male character and the secondary characters connected to a conventional pattern in the frame of a ceremonial rhetoric.

    Opera seria och musikalisk representation av genus2005In: STM-Online, ISSN 1403-5715; 2005 (8), Vol. 8, p. 24-Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

How can music be said to represent contemporary ideas about gender during the first half of the eighteenth century? This article is an investigation of musical representation of the main characters in George Frideric Handel’s opera seria Giulio Cesare (1724) from the viewpoint of a historical interpretation of gender. Indeed, music was an important means to reflect contemporary ideas of male and female.

Cesare and Cleopatra are two noble characters in the opera. Handel uses different affects for each of them due to their different status and, indirectly, to their different genders. Handel also differentiates between the two characters when using the same musical affect. Cesare is a hero and is portrayed as a heroic character using the customary constellation of affects and a musical representation. Cleopatra, on the contrary, is more complex. Her femininity is expressed in three character types: the thoughtless woman, the loving seductress, and the lamenting victim. Handel goes further, allowing Cleopatra to dress up as a heroic, triumphant character, mirroring the character of Cesare himself. This is reflected in the music too, but Handel combines the heroic style with motifs and affects associated with Cleopatra as a feminine character. Traditionally the leading male characters have a conventional pattern and framework of ceremonial rhetoric through which to express their heroism. As a woman Cleopatra is free from these conventions and although she is a main character she could never become a heroic hero. Handel exploits this contradiction musically, giving her a broader palette of affects and wider musical representation than to a conventional male hero.

Music as Excess: Die Reise and Neo-Baroque Aesthetics in Opera from the 1960s2013In: STM-Online, ISSN 1403-5715, E-ISSN 1403-5715, Vol. 16Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Lars Johan Werle’s and Lars Runsten’s opera Die Reise (Hamburg 1969) is characterized by pluralism of musical styles. The focus in this article is on how the pluralism is related to the other media in the opera, and what effects it is expected to have on the audience in the performance situation. My claim is that the stylistic pluralism is manifested in ways that connects the opera to the neo-baroque aesthetics that has been brought forth by scholars such as Omar Calabrese, Angela Ndalianis, and Cristina Degli-Esposti. It is a device that disrupts the narrative by way of attracting the attention of the audience. With an abundance of figurative representation, the music makes Die Reise an opera of ‘excess’.

Music as Wonder and Delight: Construction of Gender in Early Modern Opera through Musical Representation and Arousal of Emotions2012In: A History of Emotions 1200-1800 / [ed] Jonas Liliequist, London: Pickering & Chatto, 2012, p. 95-104Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter provides an image of how ideas about music and emotion were achieved in early eighteenth-century opera, with special reference to representations of gender and the idea of music as a means of expression independent from text and drama. The performative approach to music presented in this chapter has affinity with Reddy's theory of emotives. The aim of the chapter is to indicate how music is used as a means of expression independent of text and drama by representing and arousing emotions. From the earliest operas of the late sixteenth century, music represented affects mimetically, just as it imitated the expression of human emotions for the audience through text and drama. American musicologist Gary Tomlinson argues that late Renaissance opera was characterized by a musical representation of emotions that affected the listener through recognition of the imitated affects, whereas representation in early modern opera was based on musical conventions, not correspondences.

Musical narration, performance and excess: the creation of horror in the Swedish opera Tintomara by Lars Johan Werle2017In: Act: Zeitschrift für Musik & Performance, ISSN 2191-253X, E-ISSN 2191-253X, no 7Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Johanna Ethnersson Pontara examines the different layers in the opera Tintomara by Lars Johan Werle and Leif Söderström (Stockholm 1973), based on the short story The Queen's Jewel by Carl Johan Love Almqvist. Pontara’s thesis claims that the opera's message is expanded by the composition technique. By assembling the different styles Werle brings the relationship between narration and performance to oscillation. He uses his experience as a film music composer to create shock effects, such as those caused by the music in horror films, in order to perform them on the listeners' bodies. Ethnersson Pontara applies film theories to reveal how the orientation and disposition of the hermaphrodite Tintomaras is undermined by the power disparities between male subjects and female objects as they are traditionally represented in romances, porn and horror films.

Musikalisk narrativitet och performativitet i Lars Johan Werles arenaopera Drömmen om Thérèse2014In: Musikforskning idag: Växjö, 11-13 juni 2014, 2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Narrative and performative modalities in the Swedish opera-in-the-round Dreaming about Thérèse2014In: Svensk tidskrift för musikforskning, ISSN 0081-9816, STM-SJM, ISSN 2002-021X, Vol. 96, no 2Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The Swedish opera Drömmen om Thérèse (Dreaming about Thérèse) attracted national and international attention in the 1960s for its inventive approaches as an opera-in-the- round. Although this staging influenced the music’s functions, so far the music of this opera has been evaluated in accordance with the hegemony of narrative opera. Drömmen om Thérèse, however, offers an example of a contemporary fascination with exploring the spaces between borders, for instance, high versus popular culture and event performance versus recording. This article shows how the performative level of music in opera here acquires a particular quality through the incorporation of the devices of pluralism of styles, music in space and instrumental theatre. Rather than intoxication, the narrative- disrupting effect consists of a theatrical alienation. A relationship between performance and audience based on intimacy, equality, and reflection contributes to this effect.

Opera Seria as a Site of Movement and Arrest2014Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The paper focuses on Italian opera from the early eighteenth century and provides images of how the site of the historical performance generated experiences of movement and arrest through visual, aural and verbal media. Inspired by Erika Fischer-Lichte's performative aesthetics, and American musicologist Martha Feldman's performative model predicated upon ritual practices, this kind of opera is seen in the light of two kinds of sites: the imaginary site represented on stage, on the one hand, and the site of the performance, on the other.

The Intersection between Film and Opera in the 1960s: Ingmar Bergman’s Hour of the Wolf as an Example of Formal Imitation2018In: The Power of the In-Between: Intermediality as a Tool for Aesthetic Analysis and Critical Reflection / [ed] Sonya Petersson, Christer Johansson, Magdalena Holdar, Sara Callahan, Stockholm: Stockholm University Press, 2018, p. 49-74Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The topic of this article is the intersection between media genres in 1960s Sweden. In a case study of Ingmar Bergman’s Hour of the Wolf (1968) it is shown how the music contributes to intermedial qualities through the film’s connection with opera. It is argued that the film, by how the music is related to sound effects and images, can be seen as an example of formal imitation. The imitation of opera is created through technical media of film, such as foregrounding of media in the audio-visual space, and manipulations of sounds, music, and images. Of special interest is how, by alternating between synchronicity and counterpoint between images, sound effects, and music, Bergman attracts attention to the media as visual and sonic experiences and creates formal structures that deviate from the overall character of the film. The intermedial dimension of the film revealed by the analysis is contextualized in relation to the historical discussion of mixed versus pure medialities. The film is seen in the light of an interest in media genre mixedness versus media genre specificity in 1960s Sweden.

“To the Opera!”: Cinematic Representations of Operatic Performances in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) and Quantum of Solace (2008)2019In: Abstracts, 2019Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Recent scholarship has shown how classical music, including opera, is re-conceptualized in films of the digital age (Citron 2011, Kramer 2013). It has also been pointed out, however, that opera is a cultural object whose meaning has fluctuated throughout history (Till 2012). This paper draws attention to the audio-visual representations of opera in contemporary action film, with specific focus on Christopher McQuarrie’s Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015). I analyze how the film combines representations of a particular operatic performance with distinctive action sequences. This analysis is then compared with similar combinations in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) and Marc Forster’s Quantum of Solace (2008), leading me to the conclusion that McQuarrie’s film constitutes a representative example of how conceptualizations of opera are negotiated in contemporary popular media. Even though the operatic performance is clearly adapted to the typical narrative structures of the action blockbuster and the effects made possible by digitalization, the film articulates concepts of classical music, and opera in particular, belonging firmly to the aesthetics of the 19th- and the early 20th centuries.

Puccini's Tosca and the narrative and performative aspects of music in opera2017Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Research on opera was for a long time focused on either structural or symbolic aspects of the music. The purpose of this investigation is to broaden opera analysis by paying attention to the double role played by music in opera, the narrative and the performative. Drawing on theoretical approaches of film music analysis and performance theory it attempts to develop a method of analysis that takes both of these aspects into consideration. With point of departure in Puccini’s Tosca the paper demonstrates how this double role of the music plays a significant role for the construction of meaning in relation to verbal and visual media.

Högläsningens betydelse för barns utveckling av literacy2018Independent thesis Basic level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Aim: The aim was to evaluate height measurements made with the single view metrology method and to investigate the influence of standing position and different phases of gait and running on vertical height.

Method: Ten healthy men were recorded simultaneously by a 2D web camera and a 3D motion analysis system. They performed six trials, three standing and three during gait and running. The vertical height was measured with the single view metrology method and in Qualisys Track Manager. The results were compared for evaluation. The vertical height in the different postures was compared to the actual height.

Results: The measurements made with the single view metrology method were significantly higher than the measurements made with Qualisys Track Manager (p<0.001). The vertical height in the two standing positions was significantly lower than the actual height (p<0.05). The vertical height in midstance was significantly lower than actual height in the walking trials (p<0.05). No significant difference was found between maximum vertical height and actual height during running (p>0.05).

Conclusion: The single view metrology method measured vertical heights with a mean error of +2.30 cm. Posture influence vertical body height. Midstance in walking is the position where vertical height corresponds best with actual height, in running it is the non-support phase.

Kan HR-avdelningen skapa legitimitet till företagets CSR-arbete internt?: En kvalitativ fallstudie om hur CSR-arbetet får genomslagskraft internt i privat vårdsektor2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 180 HE creditsStudent thesis

Title: Can the HR Department Create Legitimacy for the Company’s CSR Work Internally? A Qualitative Case Study on the Impact of CSR Using the HR Department in the Private Health Sector

Level: Thesis for Bachelor’s Degree in Business and Administration

    Author: Johanna Sundqvist

    Date: Spring semester 2019

Aim: The purpose of this study is to analyze if the implementation of a health company’s CSR work to the HR department creates legitimacy to the CSR work towards the employees in the organization.

Method: A qualitative case study of Sweden’s biggest private health company. With 16 conducted semi-structured interviews, and a thematic analyze of the empirical data.

Result & Conclusion: The results shows that HR cannot as a separate department create legitimacy to the CSR work since the HR department of this company is not in touch with all of the employees like in traditional companies. The empirical data suggests that the impact and legitimacy of the CSR work is created when and if the company is all trough permeated by it.

Contributions: This paper contributes both to the previous theories on the subject, since there was a gap needing to be filled concerning how the health care industry answers to traditional HR in a CSR perspective. This case is also special since the company is a producer co-operative meaning that only the practitioners are able to own shares of the company. It also has a theoretical contribution since it is one of few studies on the subject watching the real life, and not being only a theoretical study. Amongst many, the biggest practical contribution to this study is for the company analyzed to work with their communication to gain legitimacy for their CSR-work.

Suggestion for future research: I suggest that more case studies are conducted on companies with special organization structure, so that there is a broader theoretical base on the subject in the future.

Method The study had a qualitative approach with focus group interview as method for the data collection. Four focus group interviews were carried out with 21 respondents from child health care centres and preschools in the municipality of Karlskrona. The respondents were represented by six different professions; district nurses, preschool teachers, special education teachers, child minders, department heads and headmasters. Qualitative content analysis was used as a method of analysis.

Results: The analysis resulted in one theme and 13 different categories with focus on collaboration, cooperation and common foundations. The theme captures the respondents positive attitude and willingness to cooperate, while they at the same time wished better conditions in terms of enough time and structure and that the staff managers clearly shows that they support and give priority to cooperation. A bridge has started to be built over the gap between the two health promoting settings. Relationships have been created, the different professionals have exchanged experiences and competences, and have learned together. A common foundation that affects the daily work content with children and parents has been evolved. The cooperation has been established at different levels in the geographical areas

Conclusion The conclusion is that the collaboration work between child health care and preschool in the municipality of Karlskrona has influenced the development of local cooperation, professional development and competence, the work and its content. The result gave important knowledge of the professionals’ views and experiences of the collaboration process. This knowledge is valuable for further development of sustainable collaboration with the aim to promote children´s health. The study, which is a part of a more extensive follow-up, was focused on the professionals. In further studies it is also important to take in consideration the parents' views and experiences of the cooperation between child health care and preschool.
