    Abstract [sv]

Intra- and Inter-generational Perspectives on Youth Participation in Sweden: A Study with Young People as Research Partners2015In: Children & society, ISSN 0951-0605, E-ISSN 1099-0860, Vol. 29, no 2, p. 134-145Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this study, intra- and inter-generational perspectives on youth participation are combined and compared. Young people were invited to participate as research partners in an interactive research circle and conducted a survey about participation with other young people as respondents. The discussion concerns how an interactive methodology contributes to the understanding of the concept of participation. It is suggested that political definitions of participation be amended to include having a sense of being recognised in a communicative context, taking responsibility and share with other people one’s experiences. This is based on the perspectives of young people.

Young people’s perceptions and experiences of participation and discrimination in school – an intra-generational perspective2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents a study in which two groups of young people were actors, one group as research partners and another group as respondents. The study was about experiences of participation in school from an intra-generational perspective. An interactive research methodology was used in the study. Young research partners were involved in formulating research questions and implementing a ‘Youth survey’ among other students in secondary or upper secondary schools. Respondents in the survey were 100 students (15-18y) in both special and mainstream schools. Mixed methods were used and the qualitative empery described youth’s perceptions of participation. Quantitative empery described youth’s experiences of participation. Perceived barriers to participation were both peer and adult mediated. There were also structural barriers as discrimination and communicative exclusion. Youth’s perceptions of participation included social relations with peers, educational relation with teachers and democratic values in school policy. Conditions for participation were related to young people’s agency. Experiences of ill treatment from peers and from adults were correlated. The lack of adult support made one group of students doubly exposed. The intergenerational perspective showed lack of adult responsibility for youth’s participation. The intra generational perspective showed that the act of taking responsibility was important for youth’s participation. Adults need to take responsibility for facilitating young people’s participation and youth’s need to be empowered as part in participatory processes

Children as Research partners in a Research circle2013Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation is about a Swedish study in which two groups of young people are actors, one group as research partners and another group as respondents in a study about young people’s participation. A model of the research circle, based on the Scandinavian study-circle tradition with democratic ideals, was created with young people invited as research partners in the research circle by academic researchers. The innovative design of the study included young people in the knowledge construction about youth participation. The young research partners formulated the research questions and implemented a ‘Youth survey’ among other students in secondary and upper secondary schools. Respondents in the survey are 100 students (15-18y) from mainstream schools and special schools for the Hard-of Hearing. The aim of the study was to define young people’s perspectives on participation in school-life. The young people in the study identify to have friends, being able to exert influence and understanding as central aspects of participation. They describe that the experience of participation depend on their opportunities to enact agency, responsibility, and control. Access to a free and supportive communicative context, with the agency to contribute to the interaction and decision-making is key when promoting young people’s participation in school. In this presentation, the innovative research model, as well as the report written by the adolescents in the research circle will be presented.

Young people as partners in a research circle A presentation of an interactive model between academic researchers and youth2012Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this poster we present an interactive research methodology for young people’s participation in research. A model of the research circle, based on the Scandinavian study-circle tradition with democratic ideals, was created. This was constructed in Sweden. The aim of the study was to develop research methodology that included young people in the knowledge construction of central aspects of youth participation. It is in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to facilitate child participation in matters that concerns their life circumstances. This makes it important to construct a general methodology that accounts for young people’s perspectives and that can be used in research about different subjects. A fundamental part of the study was also to define young people’s perspectives on participation. Academic researchers invited young people to be research partners in a research circle. The youth came from both special schools and mainstream schools. They came from different contexts and had different ethnicity, but they were only girls. The interactive process in the research circle concerns research fundamentals. The young research partners participated in designing and implementing a study, analyzing results and writing a report. In this poster the research model will be presented as well as the report written by the youth

Young people as partners in research: experiences from an interactive research circle with adolescent girls2013In: Qualitative Research, ISSN 1468-7941, E-ISSN 1741-3109, Vol. 13, no 5, p. 528-545Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article presents an interactive research methodology for young people’s participation in research. A model of the research circle, based on the Scandinavian study-circle tradition with democratic ideals, was created and is described. The empirical example is from Sweden. Academic researchers invited young people to be research partners in a research circle. The asymmetrical relationship between the researchers and the young research partners made asymmetric responsibility and respect into central parts of the methodology. The interactive process in the research circle concerns research fundamentals: developing methodological knowledge, designing a study, how to formulate the research questions from the viewpoint of young people, how to analyze from a generational insider perspective, and how to handle institutionalized andasymmetric power relations in social knowledge formation.

SAMFÖR - samordnat föräldrastöd2016In: Samproduktionens retorik och praktik / [ed] Per Tillgren, Inger Holmström, Jonas Stier, Gunnel Östlund, Lund: Studentlitteratur AB, 2016, p. 41-58Chapter in book (Other academic)
