    Abstract [en]

    The electric power grids expose highly dynamic behaviors that can be mitigated by exploiting Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection And Control (WAMPAC) technologies. These technologies rely on utilizing the synchrophasor measurements provided by the Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). The IEEE C37.118.2 standard defines a method for real-time communication of synchrophasor data between PMUs, Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs) and other applications. This paper describes the Smart Transmission Grid Operation and Control (STRONgrid) library, which serves as a real-time data mediator (i.e. interface) between the IEEE C37.118.2 protocol and applications consuming PMU measurements. The STRONgrid library packages all the necessary components to allow the researchers to focus on the development of synchrophasor applications in higher level programming environments (e.g. LabVIEW).

    Abstract [en]

    This work describes the implementation and validation of a library named Khorjin to receive and parse synchrophasor data from a PμPDC based on IEEE C37.118.2 protocol, map it to the IEC 61850 data model and transmit the synchrophasor data through either Routed-Sampled Value or Routed-GOOSE services defined in the IEC 61850-90-5 protocol. In addition, the library is capable of acting as the receiver and parser of IEC 61850-90-5 messages, extracting raw synchrophasor data and feeding to subscriber applications. The functionality of the Khorjin library is validated in a Real-Time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environment to asses its conformance to the functional requirements of the IEC 61850-90-5 standard.

    Flexibility and adaptability requirements of future electric power grids for integrating DERs call for the developmentof Wide-Area Monitoring, Protection And Control (WAMPAC) applications, utilizing synchrophasor measurementsprovided by the Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs).IEEE C37.118 is the most utilized protocol for real-time exchange of synchronized phasor measurement data. In orderto full some gaps not addressed in IEEE C37.118, and also to harmonize with the IEC 61850 power utility automationstandard, the IEC 61850-90-5 technical report has been developed. IEC TR 61850-90-5 introduces a mechanism fortransfer of digital states and time synchronized phasor measurement data over wide-area networks between PhasorMeasurement Units (PMUs), Phasor Data Concentrators (PDCs) and WAMPAC applications in the context of IEC61850.This work interprets the IEEE C37.118.2 and IEC 61850-90-5 Routed-Sampled Value and Routed-GOOSE protocolsand describes the design and implementation of a library named Khorjin with the functionality of (1) an IEEE C37.118.2to IEC 61850-90-5 gateway and protocol converter and, (2) an IEC 61850-90-5 subscriber and trac parser.The main contribution of this work is the development of Khorjin library using only standard C libraries (i.e.independent from any operating system). This is allowing the use of the library in dierent platforms.The design requirements and functionality of the Khorjin library has been tested in the KTH SmarTS Lab Real-TimeHardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulation environment to assess its conformance to the functional requirements of IEEEC37.118.2 and IEC 61850-90-5 standards.

    Dynamics of distribution grids are becoming more and more complex to analyze due to their transition from passive networks to active ones. This has necessitated the increase of observability between Transmission and Distribution (T&D) grids for operational security and real-time security assessment. This paper presents an overview of the IDE4L project, funded by the European Commission, where a system of PMU data-based monitoring applications has been developed to facilitate TSO-DSO interactions.

    Abstract [en]

    Electrical power systems continue to grow in size and complexity, resulting in new challenges to control and stabilize them. Measurement based Wide-Area Control Systems (WACS) have been extensively researched in the last decade to enhance power system stability. However, very few WACS implementations in the field have been carried out so far. To bridge this gap the LabVIEW package, Audur, presented in this paper, allows users to easily implement their custom WACS design on a National Instruments hardware platform. The hardware controller receives synchrophasor measurements compliant with the IEEE C37.118.2 protocol and generates a control signal that, in principle, can be configured as a supplementary control system to drive any active component in the power system.
