Kulturstudier i Sverige2007Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Advancing Cultural Studies in Sweden: An Infrastructural Initiative2001Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Societal changes make culture increasingly central but also problematise it. New per-spectives are needed to meet these challenges. The international field of cultural studies is a promising effort to answer these challenges and vitalise cultural research. Sweden may make a significant and indeed unique contribution to this effort, but im-portant steps remain to be taken with this purpose. One such step would be to install a new national-international research institute on a higher level, in order to connect disciplines, universities and regions, and push innovative developments forward.

Against such a background, this report leads up to an outline of a proposed new Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden (ACSIS). This is yet only a proposal, writ-ten at a time when ACSIS yet only exists as an imaginary utopia – though living with an extraordinary vitality in the minds of a wide intellectual network of committed scholars. Funding is presently being sought for, but it is not yet decided in what exact manner the ideas presented here will eventually be made real. The formulation of tasks, organisation and budget is thus yet a hypothetical model.

Still, this bold adventure has reached a long way since its first inception. The ACSIS has long been an attractive dream for me and for many of my colleagues among cultural researchers. It is a very great pleasure to see the plans crystallised thus far, as the journey towards an ACSIS has reached its last and decisive phase.

The report results from a committee work funded by the Bank of Sweden Tercen-tenary Foundation (Riksbankens jubileumsfond), and the Swedish Council for Re-search in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Humanistisk-samhällsvetenskapliga forskningsrådet). I had the great pleasure to work together with Svante Beckman, Ulf Hannerz, Lisbeth Larsson, Britta Lundgren, Orvar Löfgren, Ove Sernhede and Ulf Lindberg, and was reliably assisted by Åsa Bäckström. The group started working in January 2000, with a series of working meetings. Each member of the group has also had intense discussions of the basic ideas with other Swedish and international scholars, in meetings and by personal communication.

Many therefore deserve warm thanks for making this report possible. The material and mental support by the two research funding bodies was essential, as was the generous and always stimulating collaboration in the committee. Linköping Univer-sity and the City of Norrköping have been overwhelmingly supportive towards this unique proposal, further strengthening our faith in its potential. We are also grateful to all those many Swedish and foreign researchers with whom these ideas have been discussed. The National Institute for Working Life programme for Work and Culture in Norrköping was a most hospitable host for this whole planning project.

Advancing Cultural Studies: Report from an international workshop at Södertörn Conference Center, Lidingö near Stockholm, 4-5 February, 19991999Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

In modernity, culture is everywhere. So is cultural studies, it seems. But cultural studies needs to be advanced, in two senses: to be promoted but also to be ameliorated. Culture is focal in late  modern societies, and should be so in research. New encounters and innovative modes of study are necessary to deal with the new kinds of problems posed by current cultural developments. The international and interdisciplinary field of cultural studies well deserves to be spread, but also longs for regenerative initiatives. There is now in Sweden an option to take a decisive step in this direction.

This is what this report argues for.

    Abstract [en]

Culture and communication are closely connected. Culture is constituted by meaning-making practices, i.e. by symbolic communication. Communication is the sharing and transmission of meanings between people, i.e. the process that constitutes culture. Culture as communication has double effects: it gathers people around a set of shared meanings, i.e. creates identity, but it simultaneously also connects selves to others, i.e. constructs difference.

Do you see yourself?: Reflected subjectivities in youthful song texts1995In: Young - Nordic Journal of Youth Research, ISSN 1103-3088, E-ISSN 1741-3222, Vol. 3, no 2, p. 3-22Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Reflexivity has been a focal theme in much recent youth research, including my own. This theme connects studies of identity construction, subject formation and text reception with diagnoses of cultural modernization and methodological issues of qualitative ethnography. Popular-cultural mass-media texts are continuously drawn into reflexive practices in everyday life, apparently in increasingly intense and complex ways.

‘Reflexivity’ derives from the Latin ‘reflectere’: fold back. What is being folded back in cultural contexts are thoughts or symbolizations. Human subjects may be more or less reflexive, as people use texts (from talk and gestures to books and computers) in self-mirroring identity constructions, by explicitly defining who they are.

Cultural texts may also be (more or less) reflexive, in two possible senses. A text (dialogue, magazine, film, etc.) may be auto-reflexive, i.e., mirror itself, thematize or make explicit its own construction. Advertisements or television programmes nowadays often depict how ads or TV works, sometimes in an ironical mode (cf. Hutcheon, 1980/1984; Stam, 1985/1992).

Texts may secondly also be subject-reflexive, i.e., mirror the self-mirrorings of human individuals and problematize the identities of the subjects who are symbolically produced in these texts. Some youth cultural texts (including words, songs and images) used and/or made by young people depict the process of reflexive subject formation as an explicitly formulated theme. All these forms of reflexivity are closely interconnected, since reflexive texts mirror reflexive practices and in turn are used as mirrors in them. But it is this last sense of reflexivity as a theme in youth cultural texts, bridging subject‑ and text-reflexivity, which will be analyzed here.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This is an introduction to the proceedings of -Inter: A European Cultural Studies Conference in Sweden-, held in Norrköping 11-13 June 2007. The conference was organised by the Advanced Cultural Studies Institute of Sweden (ACSIS), whose director Johan Fornäs here gives a brief background to the event and its three primary dimensions of transgression and interrelation: the spatial flows of transnational globalisation between regions and countries of Europe and the world at large; the temporal processes of culturalisation that appear to have made culture and cultural research increasingly central to society and academia; and the networks of trans- and interdisciplinary cooperation that both enable and necessitate these kinds of events. The text is based on his plenary presentations at the conference, and at the same time serves as a preface to these conference proceedings.

Intermedial passages in time and space: Contexts, currents and circuits of media consumption2003In: 16th Nordic Conference for Media and Communication Research,2003, 2003Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This paper discusses spatial, temporal and structural aspects of mediated communication. It is based on experiences from the Swedish media ethnographic Passages project, where an interdisciplinary research team for five years empirically investigated interacting processes of communication and consumption in a shopping centre. (1) Contexts of media spaces. The interplay between people and media - including so-called new media - are always spatially contextualised, in spite of the transgressivity of communication. Places frame and delimit media uses, which at the same time form spatialities as meaningful geographic places and social worlds. The collective Passages ethnography invited renewed reflection on concepts like space, place, borders and movements (Clifford, Hannerz, Thrift, Goss, Hardt & Negri, Ang, McCarthy, Couldry). (2) Currents of media consumption. The processes of media consumption as multifarious temporal chains of acquisition and use also form time at all levels, from present moments to historical memories that shape identities. Inspired by Walter Benjamin-s Arcades Project, the Passages project developed a historical perspective on how the past, present and future are combined when media structure modern daily life. Reworking the borders between consumption and reception research gave a new understanding of flows and currents of media use (Williams, Ricoeur, Wertsch, Radway, Drotner, Bolter & Grusin, Miller, Slater). (3) Circuits of media types. Media industries and research have conventional ways to define and differentiate media types. These boundaries are challenged by technical, social and cultural transformations. The Passages studies of media in a shopping centre - and the mall as a medium! - made visible a series of border cases and intermedial hybrids that highlighted limitations of traditional categories. An expanded media concept let us scrutinize how media circuits are both kept apart and interconnected in intertextual, intersubjective and intercontextual practices (Kristeva, Genette, Kittler, Hörisch, Kress & van der Leeuwen, Peters, Thompson, Lehtonen).

Introducing MediaCities2007In: Cities and media: Cultural perspectives on urban identities in a mediatized world ESF-LiU Conference,2006, Linköping: Linköping University Electronic Press , 2007Conference paper (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

The ESF-LiU Conference in Vadstena 25-29 October 2006 gathered more than 50 international scholars to explore and discuss the theme of -Cities and Media: Cultural Perspectives on Urban Identities in a Mediatized World-. The main organiser and chair of the conference, musicologist researcher in media and communications Johan Fornäs from the Department of Culture Studies (Tema Q) at Linköping University introduces and sums up the event by outlining the general objectives behind this initiative. This introduction starts by discussing the recent convergence of two previously distinct research areas: media studies and urban studies. The separation is a particular facet of a more general disjunction between culture and space, which is now being outdated from both sides, as geographers and urban theorists are increasingly interested in the imaginary, mediated and symbolic, while cultural studies and media research express a growing attention to spatial dimensions and locations of communication practices. The various aspects and forms of this convergence are highlighted, combining the study of space in culture and cities in media or media representations of urban spaces with studies of culture in space and media in cities, comprising urban spaces of media making and use as well as the interspatial flows of images, texts and sounds. The result is a complex and dialectical fusion that may be termed MediaCities. Subthemes and dimensions of this interface between urban, media and cultural studies are discussed, outlining a background to the conference and ideas for future collaborative European research in this hybrid field, based on a set of different previous efforts that have paved the way for this new direction of research.

    Abstract [en]

Karaoke is an interactive media phenomenon which opens new avenues, for music use and for media research. It focuses attention on aspects of the playful use of symbols and imputation of meaning which are latent in other media forms, as well. In the following I shall explore some of these aspects, with an emphasis on differences in subject construction that relate to ethnicity and patterns of socialization.

Klyftan och broarna mellan högt och lågt2006In: Högkultur som subkultur?: inledande anföranden vid ett seminarium i Börssalen den 29 mars 2006 / [ed] Engdahl, Horace, Stockholm: Norstedts akademiska förlag , 2006, 1, p. 31-43Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

29 mars 2006 anordnade Kungl.

Kommunikation som konsumtion2002In: Medier och människor i konsumtionsrummet / [ed] Karin Becker, Nora: Nya Doxa , 2002, p. 7-16Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

The Qualities of Cultural Research. There is a widespread talk of an increasing role for culture and for transgressing borders, but still interdisciplinary cultural research experiences considerable difficulties in the new landscape of research policy. Having outlined the problematics of measuring quality in general terms a discussion and a series of proposals concerning the main dimensions of this problematics follows. First, the dominant scales for measuring publishing are criticised for being biased against the humanities, in that a too narrow set of international academic journals are unfairly favoured. Second, when external funding is measured, grants from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) tend to overshadow all other and often equally important sources, including those from EU and the ESF (European Science Foundation). Third, it is argued that quality of education and of external communication should also be considered, as should the efforts made to create an innovative and productive environment in the institutional collective. Finally, particular attention is given to the specific issues relating to evaluating interdisciplinary applications, inspired by UK/US research by Georgina Born and others, as well as from a wide range of Swedish experiences that indicate that the disciplinary structure seriously hampers the ability to deal with truly interdisciplinary work. A list of necessary considerations is presented, proposing that such a list should be formulated and fine-tuned by the Swedish Research Council, and be anchored among all those who need to evaluate interdisciplinary work, so that such evaluation is correct and fair.
