    Abstract [en]

    Crinoids and brachiopods are described from the Silurian Uzyan Formation of the Zilair Zone in the southern Urals. The occurrence of the graptolites Coronograptus praedeubeli suggests a late Homerian (Wenlock) age for the strata. A new disparid crinoid, Cicerocrinus gracilis Donovan sp. nov., is the oldest known member of this genus. It has a long, flexible and homeomorphic column, and a tall bryozoan palaeontology terminology (IBr2) (second primibrachial) axillary. All species of Cicerocrinus described previously have been limited to the Ludlow of the British Isles, Sweden and Estonia, and the Pridoli of Estonia. The poorly preserved brachiopod fauna is represented by small atrypid (Atrypa? sp.) and dalmanellid brachiopods (Levenea? sp.). The reported assemblage generally inhabited deep-water environments.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper describes 3 species of ribeirioid and 2 species of conocardiid rostroconchs from fluvially transported erratics in the Dutch-German border area. The material probably stems from Ordovician deposits of the North Estonian Confacies Belt. The ribeirioid specimens from the flaljala group of erratics (Sandhian 2) are represented by Tolmachovia subliratu sp. nov., Beukeria plicata gen. nov. sp. nov. and Ischyrinia viator sp. nov. The single specimen of Tohnachovia is hitherto the youngest occurrence of this genus and the first in Baltica. The presence of subordinate radial ornamentation is added to the emended diagnosis of the genus. The new genus Beukeria is an ischyriniid rostroconch with an elongated conch, two thick pegmas and a plicate shell posterior to vertical axis. Ischyrinia viator is similar to the coeval. I. notTegica Soot-Ryon, 1960 but this has a ventrolateral sinus that is subparallel to the dorsal axis. Conocardild specimens from the Pirgu Ojlemyr chert (Katian 4) are represented by Bitrigonocardia lindstroemi (Isberg) and Pojetaconcha costulata sp. nov. The identification of Bitrigonocardia lindstroemi is circumstantial as the type specimens are missing, but as understood here new details of morphology and ornamentation are given. Pojetaconcha is for the first time recognized outside Laurentia and Australia. Pojetaconcha costulata sp. nov. is distinguished by 14 or 15 broad and flat-topped radial ribs on the body and snout and compares closely with the Chazyan P. alabamensis (Pojeta & Runnegar, 1976), USA. Ischyriniids occur mainly in Baltica with Ischyrinia migrating into Laurentia. A general exchange of Bitrigonocardia and Pojetaconcha is seen between Laurentia and Baltica.

    Abstract [en]

    Two assemblages from the Ordovician rocks of the Arctic region contain exclusively trepostome bryozoans. The first assemblage from the Yunoyaga Formation (Middle Ordovician) of Maly Oleniy Island, Novaya Zemlya, contains Monticulipora mammulata d’Orbigny, 1850 and Nicholsonella vaupeliformis Modzalevskaya, 1955. Both species possess thick-branched ramose colonies characteristic for rather high energy environments. The second assemblage comes from two localities of the Stroinaya Formation (Upper Ordovician) of the October Revolution Island containing the single species Amplexopora angusta Astrova, 1965. The monospecific bryozoan fauna of branched, rarely encrusting growth forms and sedimentological characteristics of embedding rocks (floatstone) suggest low energy conditions in deeper environments, apparently accompanied by high salinity conditions.

    Abstract [en]

    Unique preservation of the oldest colour pattern (approximate to 490Ma) of a molluscan shell and the first record of colour pattern in monoplacophorans are reported from a well that penetrated Early Ordovician strata in the Timan-Pechora Basin of Russia. The unusual preservation reflects low subsidence temperatures and minimal tectonic deformation. A colour pattern in the form of radial stripes coincides with the pattern of multiple muscle attachments to the shell, which obviously influenced the mantle margin responsible for the shell formation and pigment deposition. We assume that this type of colour pattern is one of the most ancient to have appeared in molluscan evolution.

    The small enigmatic mollusc Jinonicella kolebabai Pokorny, 1978 is described from the upper Silurian Cardiola Formation at the Rauchkofel Sud section of the Carnic Alps, Austria. The associated conodonts suggest a late Ludlow (Ludfordian) Polygnathoides siluricus conodont Zone. Previous Silurian records of Jinonicella are known from the Wenlock to Ludlow of the Czech Republic, USA, Gotland of Sweden and the Carnic Alps of Austria. The wide distribution of this taxon across different climatic zones and widely separated areas in the Silurian is problematic, and it is unclear whether Jinonicella was present in high-latitude areas before the end-Ordovician cooling and mass extinction or was dispersed during the Silurian. Possible planktotrophy in Jinonicella and Silurian ocean circulation patterns may explain the dispersal, but within the framework of current palaeogeographical reconstructions the model does not adequately explain an equatorial to polar distribution of other contemporaneous benthic faunas from these areas.

    The small problematic mollusc Jinonicella kolebabai Pokorný, 1978 is described from the lower Silurian Laketown Dolostone at Barn Hills in Utah, USA. The associated conodonts suggest a late Telychian age for the assemblage, which makes this the oldest occurrence of this species. Previous Silurian records of Jinonicellawere known from the Sheinwoodian to Ludfordian of Bohemia, the Czech Republic, Gotland, Sweden and the Carnic Alps of Austria.

    The Early Cambrian helcionelloid mollusc Anabarella australis is described from North-East Greenland, representing the second occurrence of the species outside of Australia. Other Australian molluscs of this age are known from many localities including North China, Siberia, Altai, Transbaikalia, southern Kazakhstan, Mongolia, eastern Germany and Spain. These records, supported now by A. australis, demonstrate the close proximity of continents in the Early Cambrian.

    The Silurian myodocope ostracod Richteria migrans is reported from Arctic Russia, from Kotel'ny Island (New Siberian Islands) and the Taimyr Peninsula in strata of Ludfordian (late Ludlow, Late Silurian) age. These occurrences extend the biogeographical range of R. migrans from tropical to mid latitudes of the Early Palaeozoic Rheic Ocean in the palaeo-Southern Hemisphere, into subtropical regions of the palaeo-Northern Hemisphere on, or adjacent to, the Siberia Palaeocontinent. The new records reinforce the idea that R. migrans had wide dispersal capacity and probably possessed a pelagic lifestyle. It also endorses the use of R. migrans as a biostratigraphical marker fossil for the Ludfordian Stage, Ludlow Series, Upper Silurian.
