    Somebody by your side

A literature study of nurses experiences of bedside report.

BACKGROUND: With change of shift in healthcare, the need for shift-to-shift handover between nurses emerge.  Good communication is important to ensure proper information exchange and good patient safety. The main cause of health injuries is due to lack of communication. Bedside reporting is an alternative to traditional reporting.

AIM: The purpose of this literature study was to lighten the nurse experiences of bedside report.

METHOD: A literature study with results from eight qualitative articles. The articles quality was reviewed and analyzed. Searches were conducted in PubMed and CINAHL.

RESULT: Bedside reporting can reduce risk of harm and promote communication, but also compromise privacy and be time consuming.

CONCLUSION: Bedside reporting can definitely have a place in Swedish healthcare. However, it is not implementable in all healthcare departments and more research in the field is required.
