Youth workers experiences of how adolescence in the suburbs can be included in society2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to increase knowledge about leisure leaders' experiences of and opportunities to counteract exclusion and crime among young people in socially disadvantaged suburban areas, and what risk and protection factors they perceive to be important for exclusion and crime. The study is of a qualitative method based on hermeneutic theory of science. Four interviews were conducted with leisure leaders divided into three leisure centers. The correspondents consisted of three men and a woman of different ages and with varying work experience and varying ethnicities. The intention with the correspondents and the choice of a semi-structured interview guide was to gain an increased perspective on the chosen topic. The results indicate that the various systems in Bronfenbrenner's ecological system theory have a strong impact on young people in socially disadvantaged areas. The different system theories have protective and risk factors for the youth.

Borde svenska lärare bli mer franska?: En essä med reflektioner över lärararbetets gränser, structure och communitas2019In: Pedagogisk forskning i Sverige, ISSN 1401-6788, E-ISSN 2001-3345, Vol. 24, no 2, p. 70-83Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

I denna essä diskuteras lärarprofessionens gränser.

Early assessments in the Swedish preschool class: Coexisting logics2021In: Cepra-striben - tidsskrift for Evaluering i Praksis, ISSN 1903-8143, no 27, p. 38-49Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

In this paper, teachers’ work with the newly introduced assessment of six-year-old children in Sweden is illustrated using the neoinstitutional theory. The results show how teachers are guided by coexisting mix of logics, which are based on different values and lead to different assessment practices. The results show that more assessment implies less teaching, and the policy reform vision, to better support children in continuing education, is at risk of being lost when transformed to pedagogical practice. The formative focus on the assessments is reduced to a technical practice with focus on delivering results. Thus, the neoliberal focus and performativity is prominent.

Evaluating the practice in Swedish school-age educare: Issues and contradictions2022In: Journal of Childhood, Education & Society, E-ISSN 2717-638X, Vol. 3, no 1, p. 60-73Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article reports how teachers in Swedish school-age educare (SAEC) evaluate their practice. The study was conducted within a research- and development programme and is based on 47 teachers’ written reflections about performing evaluations. The reflections have been analysed using various neo-institutional logics. The results indicate that the teachers’ focus, regarding both the children and the practice, is directed differently when they are guided by different logics. When guided by the market logic, teachers focus on customer preferences and customer satisfaction. Guided by the professional logic, teachers focus the collective as well as the activities and the organisation around them. Guided by the bureaucratic and state logics, the teachers focus on the formal teaching, the individual child, and the school-age educare goal fulfilment. The results also show issues and contradictions concerning how to evaluate, what to evaluate, and when to evaluate. One possible claim is that the learning processes at the school-age educare are broad and complex, and thus difficult to “mould” to fit into evaluation schemes.

(Hur) Bidrar mer bedömning till ökat lärande?2021In: Barn, ISSN 0800-1669, E-ISSN 2535-5449, Vol. 39, no 1, p. 83-90Article in journal (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Markeringar av lärararbetets gränser: Territorium i omförhandling via införandet av lärarassistenter2020In: Pedagogisk forskning i Sverige, ISSN 1401-6788, E-ISSN 2001-3345, Vol. 25, no 1, p. 35-53Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Skolförberedda barn – barnförberedd skola?: Vårdnadshavares perspektiv på sina barnsövergång från förskola till förskoleklass.2018In: Cepra-striben - tidsskrift for Evaluering i Praksis, ISSN 1903-8143, no 23, p. 4-13Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

Transitions as a two-way window: separation and adjustment in transitions through the eyes of children starting school2019In: Listening to children’s advice about starting school and school age care / [ed] Sue Dockett, Johanna Einarsdottir, Bob Perry, New York and Abingdon: Routledge, 2019, 1, p. 42-54Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

When children make a transition to a new arena - a new school form or a new school house - they need not only adapt and adjust to the new context. The transition also involves a separation from the old. By this, a transition becomes a two-way window; a simultaneous process of adjustment and separation. This simultaneous process involves implications for practice. All teachers have a responsibility in enabling the transition process for the children, by helping them not only to adjust to the new but also to disengage from the old context. How can priming events in transition work in both directions? How can teachers be active in children’s disengagement and separation processes? These are questions this chapter address. The chapter has a practical focus and is building on children’s voices and narratives about the transition from preschool to school in Sweden. Special focus is put on children's separation processes since this is an area that seldom is in focus when discussing about or working with children’s transition.

Förändra praktiken genom imperativ policy? Lärares förutsättningar för arbetet med kartläggning i förskoleklass2022In: Utbildning och Demokrati, ISSN 1102-6472, E-ISSN 2001-7316, Vol. 31, no 1, p. 51-74Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study examines the conditions given to teachers in preschool class in order to execute the guarantee for early interventions and mandatory assessmentsof six-year-olds. The reform contributes an imperative policy that is to be interpreted literally to ensure equality. The study involves the analysis of survey responses from 792 teachers in 191 Swedish municipalities. The results reveal three gaps: 1) there is variety in the local preconditions and time spent on the assessments despite the standardization in this imperative policy, 2) the guarantee seems to be integrated into the local institutional culture rather than to be driving change, and 3) the reform seems to have become the teachers’ responsibility to implement within existing resources and timeframes. The conclusion is that the reform and its policy lead to large variation when implemented in local practice. Thus, national equality in education is difficult to achieve, even if the policy is imperative.

    Abstract [en]

This study aims to create knowledge about relational aspects in teachers’ descriptions of school-ageeducare teaching. With the support of the concept of pedagogical pace, the interpersonal aspectsthat emerge in the descriptions of the pedagogical meeting and the interaction between teachersand pupils are made visible. The empirical material consists of individually written reflectionswhere the teachers describe their teaching based on the didactic questions when, where, how andwhat. Based on a qualitative content analysis, three themes emerge that illustrate teachers’ pedagogicalpace in the school-age educare teaching; To lead the teaching, To follow and capture the teachingand To take joint responsibility of the teaching. The study shows that pedagogical pace is situational and immediate, and it creates different teaching situations. The descriptions illustrate how theteacher can choose to stop and respond to the pupil or ignore what happens in the joint meeting. When the pedagogical gaze is forward-looking and open towards the pupils, the school age educareteaching is described as a well-directed dance where teachers and pupils alternately lead and followand where a shared responsibility is taken through the openness and trust of those involved.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this article is to contribute with knowledge about how teachers in school-age educaredescribe their teaching. Teachers in school-age educare move between two different value systemsas they are in a field of tension between tradition and new educational policy intentions. Writtenreflections from 48 teachers at 31 schools in four municipalities have been analyzed based on whathas been described as necessary teaching elements; intentionality, interactivity and intersubjectivity. The deductive analysis resulted in four themes; Play-oriented teaching, Subject-related teaching,Situation-based teaching and Value-based teaching. The results, based on the study's analyzingconcepts, show that the teacher's control is central to whether the activities that the teachers carryout can be called teaching or not. The results also show that teaching in school-age educare stillcenters around a historical core of play, child focus and adaptation to the situation, even though thishas been supplemented with new educational policy intentions that emphasize teaching andevaluation of childrens’ learning. However, the analyzes also show that teachers in school-ageeducare can move flexibly between the two value systems.

    Abstract [en]

In 2014, a newly formed group of teachers graduated from Swedish universities. In addition to their qualification as leisure-time pedagogues, their degree includes teaching practical/aesthetical subjects in compulsory school. This group of teachers thus has to relate to dual professional identities and to maintain a balance between the socially oriented leisure-time centres and a goal- and results-driven school. In this article we describe their first two years after graduation, trying to get hold of their negotiation of professional identities and orientation in the professional landscape. Results shows that the graduates try to balance own ideals and hybrid professional intentions against traditional professional identities and labour market conditions and that position in a liminal phase might be crucial for the outcome.

Från den omogna sexåringen till den skolpliktiga förskoleklasseleven.: En dokumentanalys av sexåringen i det svenska utbildningslandskapet från 1940-tal till idag.2020In: Barn, ISSN 0800-1669, E-ISSN 2535-5449, Vol. 38, no 1, p. 71-87Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [sv]

The schoolarization of the preschool class – policy discourses and educational restructuring in Sweden2019In: Nordic Journal of Studies in Educational Policy, E-ISSN 2002-0317, Vol. 5, no 2, p. 127-136Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Our aim in this article is to examine policy discourses that promote positional changes for the preschool class in the Swedish educational system. The preschool class is currently going through a watershed period, which is characterized by uncertainty regarding its position in the education system. In this article, we explore changes in the Swedish education system by analysing policy documents from 1997 to 2017 with a specific focus on the positional shift of the preschool class. The departure point for our study is that policy relates to the concepts of subjectification, qualification and socialization. In addition, we examine how these goals in education are to be achieved and the educational restructuring required to do this. The findings show that policy discourses about the preschool class have shifted from pedagogical arguments about the benefits of pedagogical integration, consensus and the move of preschool pedagogy into school education, to more school- oriented, knowledge-economy arguments about increased goal achievement. Schoolarization describes a positional shift in the education system that contains two collaborative processes: an approach towards school content, goals and forms for teaching and a distancing to the content and goals formulated for Early Education and Care.

To be or not to be (a school child) - from national to global discourses about the child in the school start age.2022In: Evaluating transitions to school programs: Learning from research and practice / [ed] Dockett, Sue;Perry, Bob, Abdingdon Oxon: Routledge, 2022, 1, p. 27-36Chapter in book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This chapter takes a historical lens to ways in which transition to school has been conceptualised over the last 80 years in Sweden. Drawing on an extensive policy analysis, we analyse changing representations of the six-year-old child starting school, depending on how society has handled issues of the image of the child, school maturity, compulsory schooling, and the transition from home or preschool to school. The key idea is that every education system is about creating the person through education. The vision of the educated child is at the core of educational reforms. Historical discursive claims about the characteristics of the child, or the pupil, mirror the educational subject at a certain time and convey meanings of school maturity and transition to school. With this in mind, we analyse how policy documents describe the nature of the child and what the child should become in the educational institution.

    Abstract [sv]

Images of the child in the educational landscape.2019In: 29th EECERA ANNUAL CONFERENCE, Early Years: Making it Count, Thessaloniki, Greece 20th – 23rd August 2019: ABSTRACT BOOK, 2019, p. 240-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This study is a part of a research project, which aims to analyse consequences of educational policy change in Sweden. The overall policy change in Sweden is related to economy (Heckman 2000), to increase quality in education and to qualify children for further studies (Riddersporre & Persson, 2010). These changes are related to a global knowledge economy that enhances education for the youngest (Persson, 2010). Policies can be seen as narratives about progress and salvation, about ‘finding the better life’ and about ‘making’ the new citizen through schooling (Lindblad & Popkewitz, 2004). The descriptions of the child in the selected policy documents has therefore been analysed from the point of view of creating a new citizen as well as good education for children using Biesta’s (2009) concepts of subjectification and qualification. In this study, focus is to examine descriptions of the child, the school start, school readiness and mandatory school attendance through analysing national policy documents from 1940-2017. Even if document analysis includes limited ethical issues, the results may implicate consequences in educational practice. The most prominent and recurring description of the child is school ready child vs the immature child. Descriptions of power and control over children and the obedient and silenced child appears in almost all policy texts. The process of learnification in an individual performative school culture is an overarching and still standing theme. Societal ideas of children and how these are expressed in policy can be assumed to influence educational practice.

    Abstract [en]

The preschool class has been subject to several policy reforms, which principals and local education authorities are responsible. for implementing and evaluating. The aim of this study is to contribute with knowledge about how principals and local education authorities make meaning of the position and organization of the preschool class in relation to these policy reforms and to the existing practices. The method used in the study is interviews with principals and local education authorities and shows how they reason about and relate to various regulatory, normative, and cultural-cognitive elements of governance. The analysis shows that the principals have arguments for three basic positions for the preschool class: a bridge between preschool and primary school, a knowledgeoriented position, and a socially oriented position. A key argument put forward by the principals is that the preschool class should be integrated into a continuous primary school organisation. The local education authorities, on their part, interpret the new policy as an ongoing qualification and homogenization process, which affects the preschool class’s position in the education system.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Human resource management: A Nordic perspective2019Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Sweden has one of the lowest national debts in Europe, a well-educated workforce, and the country consistently ranks in top positions of the best places to live and work in the world. Human Resource Management: A Nordic Perspective offers a unique and valuable insight into the working practices of HRM in Sweden, which has been explicated for an international audience. The book offers readers outside of the country alternative methods for improving efficiency and well-being in their own workplace.

A team of experienced contributors based in Sweden discuss and analyse the Nordic tradition of inclusive and participative management and present different perspectives on creating a work-life suitable for every person involved. The first part of the book includes chapters on general issues in HR work such as development and learning, selection, teamwork, career paths, and cooperation within organisations. The second part addresses diversity, inclusion, and how discriminatory practices can be avoided.

This book will be a valuable resource for students of: HRM, business, management, education, psychology, sociology, as well as human resource management professionals who are seeking new ways to balance economic and human values.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to examine in what aspects the interactive whiteboard (IWB) has contributed to the digitalization of our schools, and how it may have changed the actual teaching in the classroom. This research explores this question from a didactic perspective, as well as from the perspective of the teachers’ reflections. The main research questions are: What do teachers use the IWB for? How do teachers use the IWB? Why do teachers use the IWB? These questions have been analyzed within a didactic framework, which is based on the expanded didactic triangle (Hudson & Meyer 2011) and the logic of events (von Wright 1983). Data was collected by interviews and surveys. The analysis was done abductively, based on a mixed methods approach. The results show that the IWB has the function of a digital hub in whole-class teaching, being mainly used as a computer projector, film projector and digital whiteboard. The main value of the IWB according to the study is that it provides the teacher access to digital information during a class. In their response, teachers express a wish to vary and adapt the teaching to include the IWB, in order to increase student motivation and participation. The study shows major differences with regards to the extent and the ways that the IWB is used in relation to teacher and school, leading to differences in pupils’ learning. Moreover, the complexity of teaching increases with the introduction of the IWB, as it requires the development of the teacher’s knowledge and skills. The study indicates that the use of the IWB implies a shift of the norm in school’s whole-class teaching to become more digital. The results are further discussed through four aspects of education: classroom practice, teachers, the school as an organization and society as a whole. The results imply that in order to develop teachers’ didactic repertoire, teachers need to be given clear assignments as well as opportunities for investigating the possibilities and limitations of digital tools, including developing and describing different methods and their advantages and disadvantages. This is proposed to be an area for further research in general and subject didactics, through action and participatory research.

Biblioteksutvecklares lärande i praktiken: så beskrivs integrationen av formellt och informellt lärande i två regionala biblioteksverksamheter2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to look into the learning environment and learning conditions of regional library employees. The study has a qualitative and deductive approach. The theoretical position of the study is Fuller and Unwin’s continuum for expansive versus restrictive learning environments, which is drawn upon Lave and Wenger’s theory of situated learning and Engeström’s expansive learning theory. Fuller and Unwin’s conceptual model of expansive and restrictive learning environments is used as a lens to collect and analyse data. Six semi-structured interviews have been conducted with regional library employees at two different library development units.

The results, based on the perspective of the regional library employees, show that the learning environment can be seen as both restrictive and expansive. The findings indicate that the learning environment is expansive when it comes to the individual's opportunity to learn and develop within their role and restrictive when it comes to learning that challenges the organisation of work. The findings also indicate that the integration of formal and informal learning is facilitated by the supportive learning climate in a workgroup, by teamwork and cooperation, by group learning through dialogue and by group attendance at formal learning activities. Furthermore, the integration of formal and informal learning seems to be impeded by current standards of best practice and social structures which emphasize learning as transfer. The integration also seems to be impeded by a limited scope of action due to multiple learning environments represented by multiple contexts such as the regional library, the individual public libraries in each region and the municipalities that those public libraries belong to.

Evidence-based practice for adolescents with substance abuse disorder: Challenges in the implementation of evidence-based practice2022Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor of Fine Arts), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this scientific research is to investigate how social workers in social service agencies that are determined to work in line with the critical appraisal model make decisions on treatment methods for adolescents with substance abuse disorder. The research is also intended to investigate the challenges involved in the implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). It is a qualitative study with semi structured interviews. The study results reveal that social workers in Sweden do provide evidence-based treatment methods for adolescents with substance abuse disorder but they do not go through scientific research before deciding on treatment methods for clients. The National Board of Health and Welfare National guidelines (socialstyrelsens nationella riktlinjer) suggest evidence-based treatment methods for social work practitioners and all they need to do is to select treatment methods that match the needs of clients from a list of evidence-based treatment methods. The study also reveals that case officers make decisions on treatment methods for clients but therapists must not implement the treatment methods if they do not find it useful for clients. In addition, Swedish social workers to a greater extent are provided with resources that can lead to a successful implementation of evidence-based practice. Out of seven participants in the current study, only one participant mentioned lack of financial resources as an obstacle to the provision of evidence-based training to social workers in the institution where he works.

    Abstract [sv]
