Identifying design issues related to the knowledge bases of medical decision support systems2010Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The modern medical diagnostic systems are based on the techniques using digital data formats – a natural feed for the computer based systems. With the use of modern diagnostic techniques the diagnosis process is becoming more complex as many diseases seem to have the same pre-symptoms at early stages. And of course computer based systems require more efficient and effective ways to identify such complexities. However, the existing formalisms for knowledge representation, tools and technologies, learning and reasoning strategies seem inadequate to create meaningful relationship among the entities of medical data i.e. diseases, symptoms and medicine etc. This inadequacy actually is due to the poor design of the knowledge base of the medical system and leads the medical systems towards inaccurate diagnosis. This thesis discusses the limitations and issues specific to the design factors of the knowledge base and suggests that instead of using the deficient approaches and tools for representing, learning and retrieving the accurate knowledge, use of semantic web tools and techniques should be adopted. Design by contract approach may be suitable for establishing the relationships between the diseases and symptoms. The relationship between diseases and symptoms and their invariants can be represented more meaningfully using semantic web. This can lead to more concrete diagnosis, by overcoming the deficiencies and limitations of traditional approaches and tools.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this essay is to examine how children’s language is supported and developed at the kindergarten and how it is done in reality. This study has its focus on gatherings. The content of the gatherings is analyzed with the Vygotskij’s theory in mind by interviewing kindergarten teachers and observing gatherings while focusing on the three theoretical expressions involvement, participation and autonomy. The result shows that teacher use the principles of involvement, participation and autonomy by activities like reading, songs etc. The study shows even that kindergarten teachers follow two different models consisting of the Bornholmsmodel and an own model. The main function of a gathering is to involve children into a social society. It shows that gatherings have a mixed status amongst kindergarten teachers because of having different opinions about gathering’s function and relevance for developing children’s language skills. It shows that gatherings using the Bornholmsmodel do have more content than gatherings done by kindergarten teachers with their own model. To examine if this occurs because of the mixed status or because of planning-issues would be a good start to begin with in future research.

    Abstract [sv]

Nonrandom pattern of aberrations in 17β-estradiol-induced rat mammary tumors: Indications of distinct pathways for tumor development2007In: Genes, Chromosomes and Cancer, ISSN 1045-2257, E-ISSN 1098-2264, Vol. 46, no 5, p. 459-469Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Estrogens play an important role in breast cancer etiology and the ACI rat provides a novel animal model for defining the mechanisms through which estrogens contribute to mammary cancer development. In crossing experiments between the susceptible ACI strain and two resistant strains, COP (Copenhagen) and BN (Brown Norway), several quantitative trait loci (QTL) that affect development of 17b-estradiol (E2)-induced mammary tumors have been defined. Using comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), we have analyzed cytogenetic aberrations in E2-induced mammary cancers and have found clear patterns of nonrandom chromosomal involvement. Approximately two thirds of the tumors exhibited copy number changes. Losses of rat chromosome 5 (RNO5) and RNO20 were particularly common, and it was found that these two aberrations often occurred together. A third recurrent aberration involving proximal gain and distal loss in RNO6 probably defined a distinct subgroup of tumors, since it never occurred in combination with RNO5 loss. Interestingly, QTL with powerful effects on mammary cancer development have been mapped to RNO5 and RNO6. These findings suggest that there were at least two genetic pathways to tumor formation in this rat model of E2-induced mammary cancer. By performing CGH on mammary tumors from ACI rats, F1 rats from crosses between the ACI and COP or BN strains and ACI.BN-Emca8 congenic rats, which carry the BN allele of the Emca8 QTL on RNO5 on the ACI genetic background, we were able to determine that the constitution of the germ line influences the pattern of chromosomal aberrations.

    Abstract [en]

A general opinion among teachers in school is that a lot of time is spent on conflict handling. In the study, teachers opinions about conflict and conflict handling will be discussed though the purpose is to study conflict handling in two classrooms. The purpose is also to see what opinions teachers have when it comes to preventing and handling conflicts. The study is built on observations and qualitative interviews with two teachers. The opinion among teachers in this study is that a school without conflicts gives the pupils advantages and is something that the school teaching take benefits from. The interpretation is that the handling of conflicts in school is unavoidable and time is taken from planned education to conflict handling. The result of the study shows that different opinions of pupils benefits from conflict handling. Earlier documented research shows, unlike the result of the study, that conflict handling may give pupils valuable tools to handle social problems they may experience now and in the future. The results even presents conflicts of different type of character, some of them can be constructive and some destructive. Focus of the result in the study is also that the same pupils often end up in conflicts and that there are a common denominator among them. In the study the result is discussed. Subjects that are in focus are the lack of conflict handling in the classroom, why it is relevant to discuss conflicts in the classroom and also that children need a security to be able to handle conflicts. Finally, are the chosen methods of the study discussed.

Pattern Parameterization with Granules in Ship Movements: Describing identifying aspects of movement patterns with varying levels of granularity2010Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This report aims to explore a possible transparent alternative to the black box approach of machine learning in identifying a ship’s type from simple movement data, consisting of a set of coordinates with timestamps. This is achieved by an application that converts the set of coordinates to vectors and assigns them various traits, such as turn radius, speed and distance traveled, and then identifying the correlation between collections of different values of these traits, called granules, and different ship types. The results show a definite connection between certain kinds of granules and certain ship types and lay the foundation for building a more well defined syntax for ship identification.

Sociala kognitiva arbetsmiljöproblem (SKAMP) inom datorstött samarbete2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

A good self-esteem of students will often coincide with good academic performance, but it has also shown that students do not have low self-esteem due to low academic performance. Students' self-esteem is both a complex topic and concepts. We want this study to draw attention and to discuss teachers' efforts to enhance students' self-esteem in school. Encouragement and support of the school adopted in the study contribute to strengthening students' self-esteem. The study examines whether and how nine pupils in a sixth class is that they get encouragement and support of / from their teachers in school subjects and in learning situations. Of the results revealed that some students feel that the teacher encourages them through praise, it may be both written and oral. It further appeared that some students feel the support of teachers by allowing them to practice more on what they think is difficult and some students expressed that they do not receive any encouragement or no aid from their teachers. The results show that students have different difficult to perceive what is aid and what is encouragement from the teacher. The results illustrate the discussion we pupils statements in relation to the concept of self-esteem and our thoughts.

TREATING HORROR WITH ECSTASY: Neurobiological Rationale for Treating Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder with 3,4- methylenedioxymethylamphetamine2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a disabling condition that afflicts 1-10% of the general population, with twice as high lifetime prevalence for women than men. Treatments exist, but none have proven reliable and consistent efficacy. A large minority of patients remain treatment-resistant despite undergoing several different types of treatment over extended periods of time. Recently completed studies in the U.S. and in Switzerland have demonstrated the potential of 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA)-assisted psychotherapy for treatment-resistant PTSD. One of the major problems of treating PTSD is the patients’ fear state and inability to form a therapeutic alliance. Both these issues can be facilitated through administration of MDMA; the psychological effects - such as heightened empathy, increased openness and diminished anxiety – seem well-suited for therapeutic purposes. The rationale behind treating PTSD with MDMA has been indicated in neuroimaging studies; MDMA affects some of the neural structures altered in patients with PTSD, most notably the amygdala and the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Using the Schedule 1 substance MDMA for this purpose is however controversial; animal studies have indicated that MDMA is neurotoxic, although no adverse effects on humans related to incidental use of MDMA in a controlled setting have been found. In conclusion, the data support that MDMA may be an efficient tool for treating PTSD, as well as safe and effective to use in a clinical context.

IT-supported knowledge repositories: Increasing their Usefulness by Supporting Knowledge Capture2008Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Organizations use various resources to achieve business objectives, and for financial gain. In modern business, knowledge is a critical resource, and organizations cannot afford not to manage it. Knowledge Management (KM) aims to support learning and to create value for the organization. Based on three levels of inquiry (why, what, how), work presented in this thesis includes a synthesized view of the existing body of knowledge concerning KM and hence a holistic characterization of KM. This characterization reveals a strong dependency between KM and Learning Organization (LO). Neither of them can be successful without the other. We show that a KM project resulting in an IT-supported knowledge repository is a suitable way to start when the intention is to initiate KM work. Thus, our research focuses on ITsupported knowledge repositories.Large numbers of KM projects fail, and organizations lack support for their KM undertakings. These are the main problems that our research addresses. In order for an IT-supported knowledge repository to be successful, it must be used. Thus, the content of the repository is critical for success. Our work reveals that the process of capturing new knowledge is critical if the knowledge repository is to include relevant and updated knowledge. With the purpose of supporting the capture process, this thesis provides a detailed characterization of the capture process as well as guidance aiming to facilitate the implementation of the capture process in such a way that knowledge is continuously captured, also after the KM implementation project is completed. We argue that the continuous capture of new knowledge which can potentially be stored in the knowledge repository will, in the long term perspective, have a positive influence on the usefulness of the repository. This will most likely increase the number of users of the repository and accordingly increase the number of successful KM projects. All the work presented in this thesis is the result of a qualitative research process comprising a literature review and an empirical study that were carried out in parallel. The empirical study is a case study inspired by action research, which involved participation in the project Efficient Knowledge Management and Learning in Knowledge Intensive Organizations (EKLär).

    Abstract [en]

Knowledge forms an important asset in modern organisations. In order to gain and sustain competitive advantage knowledge has to be managed. One aspect of doing this is to build knowledge repositories. In this paper we extend the strategic knowledge management framework to betters suit the process of constructing knowledge repositories. The extended framework highlights, for example, the impact of organizational culture and the importance of distinguishing between the individual and organizational knowledge processes and relating them to each other. The application of the extended framework to analyze a case in the public health care sector revealed a number of important aspects in the preparation and implementation of a knowledge management project. In particular we highlight the importance of having a strategic vision and making the dual relationship between usage and design explicit when implementing a knowledge repository.

Supporting Knowledge Evaluation to Increase Quality in Electronic Knowledge Repositories2010In: International Journal of Knowledge Management, ISSN 1548-0666, E-ISSN 1548-0658, Vol. 6, no 1, p. 23-43Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Knowledge forms an important asset in modern organizations. In order to gain and sustain competitive advantage knowledge has to be managed. One aspect of this is to use Electronic Knowledge Repositories (EKR) to enhance knowledge sharing, reuse and learning. The success of an EKR is dependent on the quality of its content. For knowledge to be stored in an EKR, it has to be captured. One crucial part of the capture process is to evaluate whether the identified knowledge should be incorporated in the EKR or not. Therefore, to increase quality in an EKR, the evaluation stage of the capture process must be successfully carried out. Based on an interpretive field study and an extensive literature review, this paper identifies and characterizes Critical Success Factors (CSF) in the evaluation stage and presents guidance aiming to support implementation of the evaluation stage with the purpose to increase the quality of an EKR. In particular, the guidance supports the decision whether identified knowledge should be stored or not and it highlights the importance of performing evaluation addressing correctness, relevance, protection and redundancy. The characterization of the capture process contributes mainly to KM theory, and the guidance to KM practice.

    Abstract [en]

IT-supported knowledge repositories are an important part in Knowledge Management (KM) work. The success of an IT-supported knowledge repository is dependent on what is stored in the repository and hence the ability to capture the right knowledge is a key aspect. Therefore, to increase the quality in an ITsupported Knowledge Repository, the identify activity, which starts the capture process, must be successfully performed. While Critical Success Factors (CSF) for KM and KMS are frequently discussed in the literature, there is a knowledge gap concerning CSF for this specific knowledge capture activity. Based on an interpretive field study and a literature review, this paper proposes and characterizes CSF for the identify activity. For example, we highlight the importance of having organizational knowledge about what knowledge to capture and where to find it, i.e. having knowledge about potential sources of knowledge.

    Abstract [en]

When information systems (IS) are developed and implemented, in any context, a number of success factors determine whether or not the effort will succeed. Attention to success factors helps to avoid some costly mistakes, and speeds up the way change is managed. This paper is focused on how to manage critical success factors (CSF) in organisations involved in standards-based Business-to-Business (B2B), with a focus on organisational CSFs. An existing CSF framework in IS planning is applied theoretically to a B2B setting. Activities in a B2B standards implementation model are compared and matched against the framework. Results show that the framework is suitable for planning B2B implementations, essentially for strategic planning. Based on these results we have developed concrete guidelines to be used in the planning phase by strategic planners. Future work will consist of empirical validation, further detailing the guidelines in order to develop a practically useful ”tool” for managing CSF in a B2B standards implementation.

Seven Types of Knowledge Loss in the Knowledge Capture Process2010In: Proceedings of the 18th European Conference on Information Systems (ECIS 2010), Association for Information Systems, 2010, p. Paper 13-Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Society is based on knowledge and the availability thereof. Access to knowledge empowers people, and organizations must reuse knowledge to be competitive. The right knowledge to the right person at the right time is important for success, and IT plays an important role in order to achieve this goal, for example in the form of Electronic Knowlege Repositories (EKR). The success of an EKR depends on what is stored therein, and the ability to capture the right knowledge is hence a key aspect. This, however, is a complex issue. The goal of this paper is to identify and describe different types of knowledge loss, seven of which have been identified and characterized. As an example, one knowledge loss shows that not all knowledge can be stored, and critical knowledge elements may therefore be lost when attempting to store it. Some knowledge loss may be desirable, since an organization should not want to store everything. The results contribute to capturing the right knowledge, and hence to successful EKR. The results thus contribute to elevating the competitive power of an organization.

How to Successfully Apply Critical Success Factors in Healthcare Information Systems Development?: A Story from the Field2012In: Proceedings of the 20th European Conference on Information Systems, Barcelona, Spain 2012, Association for Information Systems, 2012, article id Paper 220Conference paper (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Many studies have focused on retrospectively identifying critical success factors (CSFs) for healthcare information system (HIS) development projects. In this paper the central question is how in advance selected CSFs can be applied in the best way. An action research study has been carried out in a large Swedish healthcare organization during 2010 and 2011 where the application of four CSFs has been planned, documented and reflected upon. Challenges are identified that may arise when tailoring general CSFs to situational circumstances. For example, the self-evident CSF of ?having a clear and accepted objective? becomes tricky and complex in practice when facing 15 autonomous boards that all need to support the project. Similar insights are gained for other CSFs. More research is needed to illuminate the complexities of how to apply CSFs. Another important observation is that different CSFs strengthen one another, which implies that they should be applied and analysed in concert rather than isolated. Finally, healthcare practitioners need to be aware that CSFs are very helpful, but that tailoring general CSFs to the unique situation of the HIS development project requires much effort and continuous reflection from a holistic perspective embedded in systems thinking.

Attityder till teoretiskaoch praktiska läxor: En elevstudie i årskurs 82008Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This is a study about attitudes to theoretical and practical homework. Our interest in the

subject emerged during our practical teacher training but is also influenced from our own

VFU "practical teacher training" and our own time in school. All students have different ways

of learning and as pedagogues we ought to try to individualize the education. We believe a

practical homework could stimulate the students' different ways of learning. This is both a

qualitative and a quantitative study. Our study is also experimental because we got three

groups that did theoretical homework and three groups that, in addition, did a practical

homework before a test. Both groups are important to our study. Then we examined which

attitudes the students had to theoretical and practical homework by the means of a

questionnaire, which measured the students attitudes to practical and theoretical homework.

The study will be made in eight class. We are well aware that you can not generalize. We also

compared the test with a test the students did previously, before are study took place. We

completed the study with an interview with the students teacher in order to ask what she

considered about the test results and practical homework. And if she believes the practical

homework affects the result of the test. By this study we try the hypothesis that practical

homework can stimulate students in their different ways of learning. The study shows that the

students prefer a variation of both theoretical and practical homework.

Är skolans mål möjliga att nå för alla?: Hinder och förutsättningar för elevers måluppfyllelse i kärnämnen ur ett lärarperspektiv2008Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The importance of education and lifelong learning are essential factors to ensure and stimulate economic growth in our country, to secure welfare and counteract polarisation of social classes. During the last five years statistics from the Swedish Board of Education shows a constant number of approximately 10 % of the students in year 9 who have not qualified for upper secondary education. This is because they have not attained the goals of the syllabus which require a pass in the core subjects of Swedish, mathematics and English. This fact is the reason for our investigation in which we illustrate teachers’ assertions and lines of arguments concerning impediments and preconditions for attaining the goals of the core subjects.

In this qualitative study we have used interviews as our main approach. We have interviewed six teachers at five different schools in a medium size municipality in the south-west of Sweden. The study is divided into three levels, organization, group and individual level. On the organization level the key issues are school policy, school administration and the steering documents of the school. On the group level the key issues are the class/group and the working team and on the individual level the study focuses on the individual pupil/student and the individual teacher.

The result indicates that the teachers’ lines of arguments were focused on his/her own role of importance for the pupils’/students’ attainments of the goals. Furthermore it appeared that the steering documents play an important part because they can be interpreted in many ways. Other factors shown in the study are that pupils/students are not motivated enough to do schoolwork and thereby reach the goals. There are pupils/students who are less talented and others who have a different cultural background and get enrolled in the Swedish school system late. They might therefore have difficulties attaining the goals. Thus our conclusion is; no it is not possible for every pupil/student to attain the goals of school!

We use both the words pupil and student because we sometimes mean the younger children (pupils) but also the older ones (students).

Kreditbedömningar och Data Warehouse: En studie om riktlinjer för insamling, transformering och inladdning av kreditbedömningsinformation i Data Warehouse2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish school has got students in special educational needs since elementary school was introduced 1842. How the education was designed and performed has been different from time to time. We wanted to take part of the teachers' experiences of special educational groups in a process of change over a thirty-year period, and if this process was propitious for the students in special educational needs. The study is qualitative with narrative research interviews as method. The narrative method aims to interpret and understand the teachers' stories. The result of the process change shows that the special educational groups have not changed during this period of time, according to the teachers, despite the organisational changes that has taken place. But however the approach against the students has changed, which we experience has favoured the students in a positive way.

Användandet av web services inom 24–timmarsmyndigheten2005Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor)Student thesis
    Abstract [sv]

Gemensamma mål bland främlingar i en komplex virtuell miljö: En kvalitativ studie kring spel och samarbete2011Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Artificiell intelligens - ANN och evolution i shooterspel2012Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Behavior-based artificial systems, e.g. mobile robots, are frequently designed using (various degrees and levels of) biology as inspiration, but rarely modeled based on actual quantitative empirical data. This paper presents a data-driven behavior-based model of a simple biological organism, the hydra. Four constituent behaviors were implemented in a simulated animal, and the overall behavior organization was accomplished using a colony-style architecture (CSA). The results indicate that the CSA, using a priority-based behavioral hierarchy suggested in the literature, can be used to model behavioral properties like latency, activation threshold, habituation, and duration of the individual behaviors of the hydra. Limitations of this behavior-based approach are also discussed.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

Decision-making in the Requirements Engineering Process: A Human-centred Approach2005Licentiate thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering and the need for improved decision support for requirements engineers has been identified by a number of authors. A first step toward better decision support in requirements engineering is to understand decision-makers’ complex decision situations. To gain a holistic perspective of the decision situation from a decision-makers perspective, a decision situation framework has been created. The framework evolved through a literature analysis of decision support systems and decision-making theories. The decision situation of requirements engineers has been studied at Ericsson Microwave Systems and is described in this thesis. Aspects of decision situations are decision matters, decision-making activities, and decision processes. Another aspect of decision situations is the factors that affect the decision-maker. A number of interrelated factors have been identified. Each factor consists of problems and these are related to decision-making theories. The consequences of this for requirements engineering decision support, represented as a list that consists of desirable high-level characteristics, are also discussed.

    Abstract [en]

Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering (RE) and the need for improved decision support for RE decision-makers has been identified by a number of authors in the research literature. Decision-supporting features and qualities can be integrated in RE tools. Thus, there is a need to evaluate the decision-supporting capabilities of RE tools. In this paper, we introduce a summative, criteria-based evaluation method termed DESCRY, which purpose is to investigate to what extent RE tools have decision-supporting capabilities. The criteria and their related questions are empirically as well as theoretically grounded.

    Abstract [en]

Complex decision-making is a prominent aspect of requirements engineering (RE) and the need for improved decision support for RE decision-makers has been identified by a number of authors in the research literature. A first step toward better decision support in requirements engineering is to understand multifaceted decision situations of decision-makers. In this paper, the focus is on RE decision-making in large scale bespoke development. The decision situation of RE decision-makers on a subsystem level has been studied at a systems engineering company and is depicted in this paper. These situations are described in terms of, e.g., RE decision matters, RE decision-making activities, and RE decision processes. Factors that affect RE decision-makers are also identified.

    Abstract [sv]

Generisk Affärsmodell för E-tjänster2009Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
