The effects of environmental uncertainty conditions on organisational innovativeness and performance of SMEs.2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Innovativeness is considered to be an important factor for firm’s survival and their ability to compete in today’s market. Therefore, researchers have become more interested in studying innovativeness and its drivers. Studies have also showed that there’s a positive relationship between environmental uncertainty and innovativeness. Organisations are responsive to turbulent environments through innovativeness in order to stay competitive and improve performance. The purpose of this thesis is to rank critical environmental factor’s effect on organisational innovativeness of small and medium enterprises in Sweden, through investigating the impact of market/demand turbulence and technological turbulence on innovativeness. Additionally, we want to examine the relationship between innovativeness and business performance, as well as the indirect relationship between environmental uncertainty and performance. Based on previous literature, we have developed hypotheses and proposed a research model to study the formulated problems. Data for the study were collected from 50 SMEs in Sweden, through a survey with well-known scales and were analysed using regression analysis. The results of the study, reveal that environmental uncertainty has a positive effect on the innovativeness of SMEs. In addition, technological turbulence showed to have a positive significant effect on an SME’s innovativeness; however, contrary to general belief, market/demand turbulence did not have any prominent effect. Our findings also proved that innovativeness have a strong positive impact on business performance, and that only technological turbulence have an indirect influence on performance through innovativeness. This study aimed to contribute to the management a better understanding, of which conditions of environmental turbulences SMEs should adapt to, in order to increase their level of innovativeness. Keywords: environmental uncertainty, organizational innovativeness, performance, market/demand turbulence, technological turbulence, SMEs.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

Professor Philippe Aghion is the 2016 recipient of the Global Award for Entrepreneurship Research, consisting of 100,000 Euros and a statuette designed by the internationally renowned Swedish sculptor Carl Milles. He is one of the most influential researchers worldwide in economics in the last couple of decades. His research has advanced our understanding of the relationship between firm-level innovation, entry and exit on the one hand, and productivity and growth on the other. Aghion has thus accomplished to bridge theoretical macroeconomic growth models with a more complete and consistent microeconomic setting. He is one of the founding fathers of the pioneering and original contribution referred to as Schumpeterian growth theory. Philippe Aghion has not only contributed with more sophisticated theoretical models, but also provided empirical evidence regarding the importance of entrepreneurial endeavours for societal prosperity, thereby initiating a more nuanced policy discussion concerning the interdependencies between entrepreneurship, competition, wealth and growth.

    Abstract [sv]

Designing customer rewards programs for repeated purchase using optimization methods2015Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

A Customer Rewards Program (CRP) or a loyalty program is characterized by customers being rewarded for repeated purchases. The goal of these programs is to increase sales and profit through offering purchase incentives in the form of delayed rewards, as a result influencing customer behavior and in the end increasing company profit. It is an open debate in the literature if such reward programs are truly profitable for the company running it. This thesis therefore proposes a new approach to designing a CRP based on optimization methods with a focus on maximizing the expected profitability of the program. The key finding of the thesis is that such an approach can be applied to CRPs in order to increase the profitability of the companies running such programs. The approach offers promising results towards applicability to specific business segments and as a result towards maximizing the expected profits resulting from customer rewards programs. Since a largescale CRP may require significant developments on existing infrastructure and can pose high costs through the rewards redeemed during the program, the perspective of being able to maximize profits through fine-tuning the program parameters could be of great help. It can even be crucial to a company considering large investments on necessary developments or aiming to increase the returns on an existing CRP infrastructure. As part of the thesis we have analyzed the – at the time of writing – running CRP programs of several major companies present on the Hungarian market based on publicly available data in order to evaluate the applicability of the proposed optimization approach to real-world CRP designs. The analysis done on these real-world CRP designs indicates that the proposed optimization approach is applicable to a class of CRP designs witnessed to be popular among companies operating in various business segments. We have also investigated Hungary’s largest pharmacy-chain to gain insight into real-world CRP design considerations. Based on guided interviews conducted with the head of marketing at the aforementioned pharmacy-chain we conclude that the relevant information needed for our proposed optimization approach can be available to a company from business data (e.g. through billing and accounting information) readily available in an integrated IT infrastructure. We also conclude that the proposed theoretical results on CRP design are based on valid mathematical assumptions and correlate to accounting considerations related to the introduction of a CRP program.

Enabling strategic change through business and IT alignment: Challenges for an organization’s management and leadership2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

The main objective for this thesis is to identify a set of challenges imposed on an organization undergoing strategic change impacting their IT Landscape. Organizations most embark on strategic change initiatives in order to remain competitive and create business value. It is important to understand these challenges imposed during the change process in order to be prepared and able to minimize the negative impact they may have if not handle properly. For this purpose within the scope of this thesis the aim is to identify challenge areas and the specific challenges they may impose. These identified challenges can be used as a baseline for organizations in order to understand which areas to address in order to minimize negative impact during a strategic change related to their IT Landscape. A case study methodology was used in this thesis and relevant research through literature review in identified topics was conducted. Communication, leadership, business value and strategy realization, knowledge management and change management are examined through the theoretical framework and identified as areas in need of attention during a strategic change initiative. Also within the theoretical framework this thesis identifies Enterprise Architecture as an enabler for succeeding with the change initiative related to the IT Landscape. The qualitative empirical data for this thesis was collected through the interview of ten professionals within four different organizations. Based on the above approach, within the scope for this thesis, a set of challenge areas and specific challenges were identified and the conclusion was that these areas are important to address during a strategic change initiative impacting IT Landscape within an organization in order to ensure a successful outcome.

The why, how, and what of public policy implications of tourism and hospitality research2023In: Tourism Management, ISSN 0261-5177, E-ISSN 1879-3193, Vol. 97, article id 104720Article, review/survey (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

We synthesized policy implications of tourism and hospitality research by reviewing 12,269 articles published in 10 leading journals from 2011 to 2021. The most common rationale for policies (i.e., the why) is market failure, while the most typical role of policies (i.e., the how) is to create incentives. In addition, policies are typically hybrid and include suggestions for formal and informal institutional setups (i.e., the what). Because our review revealed that only 114 articles (i.e., 0.93%) included the why, how, and what of actual policies, we offer a theory-based research agenda on policy-making focused on making tourism and hospitality more inclusive and focusing on evolutionary dynamics, providing an understanding of the impact of crises and contemporary solutions, focusing on resilience and institutional complexity, and addressing the actors and time dimension. Our results, combined with those of our suggested research directions, will benefit organizations and society and simultaneously enhance the perceived societal value-added, contributions, and stature of tourism and hospitality research. © 2023 The Authors

Purpose: Purpose of this paper is to analyze the circumstances under which social marketing affect the consumer's priority of functional and symbolic values with regards to the consumption of beef.

Method: Written survey followed by interview session with focus on the three different segments of regular consumers of beef, flexitarians and vegetarians. These segments include both consumers and non- consumers of beef. All respondents who activly chose to restrict or refrain beef consumption has to base their decision on reasons which are other than religious.

Results: This paper found possible situations where social marketing influenced the consumer behaviour with regard to beef consumption. This conclusion is based on the fact that all segments included in this paper mainly based their consumer behaviour on social information sources. The result also showed a tendency for the respondents in the segment of flexitarians to both influence and to be influenced by each other's consumer behavior.

Human capital sorting: The "when" and "who" of the sorting of educated workers to urban regions2018In: Journal of regional science, ISSN 0022-4146, E-ISSN 1467-9787, Vol. 58, no 3, p. 581-610Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The sorting of high-ability workers is often advanced as one source of spatial disparities in economic outcomes. There are still few papers that analyze when human capital sorting occurs and whom it involves. Using data on 16 cohorts of university graduates in Sweden, we demonstrate significant sorting to urban regions on high school grades and education levels of parents, i.e., two attributes typically associated with latent abilities that are valued in the labor market. A large part of this sorting has already occurred in deciding where to study, because the top universities in Sweden are predominantly located in urban regions. The largest part of directed sorting on ability indicators occurs in the decision of where to study. Even after controlling for sorting prior to labor market entry, the best and brightest are still more likely to start working in urban regions. However, this effect appears to be driven by Sweden's main metropolitan region, Stockholm. We find no influence of our ability indicators on the probability of starting to work in urban regions after graduation when Stockholm is excluded. Studies of human capital sorting need to account for selection processes to and from universities, because neglecting mobility prior to labor market entry is likely to lead to an underestimation of the extent of the sorting to urban regions.

Role of ICT in Combating Corruption and Improving Public Service Delivery, A case study of Punjab Information Technology Board2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Governments in both developing and developed countries provide services to its citizen however some provide better services than the others. Public services generally include facilities of health, education, electricity and water supply, social welfare, transportation, communication and other services. Countries face many challenges while providing these services to citizens and many developing countries have failed to provide the public services efficiently and are facing issues while providing service delivery to its citizens. One of the issues is corruption. The developing countries need to adopt e-governance and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to overcome these issues. E-governance is a process of improving through Information Technology (IT), the way government works, shares information, interacts with clients (citizen, Business, Government) and provides services to clients. Our thesis will investigate whether ICT can combat corruption and improve Public Service Delivery (PSD) in developing countries. Findings of our study will help developing countries in combating corruption and improving public services. We have reviewed the literature related to public service delivery, corruption and its adverse effects, use of ICT and e-governance to combat corruption. We have adopted a case study approach to see what sorts of ICT initiatives are being taken by the government of Punjab to reduce corruption and improve the public services. In this regard we have explored the e-governance projects of PITB (Information Technology department of the Government of Punjab) including one of a recent project of PITB namely Citizen Feedback Model (CFM) which has got international attention worldwide for combating corruption and improving public services delivery. We have performed quantitative analysis on six months data set of CFM which was comprised of over one hundred and seventy thousand responses categorized in predefined categories of feedback. By doing the quantitative analysis of CFM data we have found that this particular e-governance project is reducing corruption of public officials and improving public service delivery. Further explanations are provided through information gathered by interviews. Finally we have tied our results to findings in the literature and suggested implications.

Effective Leadership in a Global Environment2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Leaders of today have the challenge to lead in a complex, rapidly changing, multicultural context. In most industries, leaders perform tasks on a global level and they are required to have the necessary competencies to be more effective. It is a well-known fact that organizations are still negatively affected in terms of competitiveness and growth, due to leaders` lack of capabilities to lead effectively. Furthermore, despite the previous academic contributions, global leadership still remains a developing field to be explored. Previous studies on the global leadership listed various competencies to lead to effectively in a global environment. However, a limited evidence was provided to support direct relationship between those competencies and the global leadership effectiveness. Moreover, previous studies have concentrated mainly on defining global leadership competencies, but there is still a gap to understand which of those competencies makes global leaders effective. There is also a strong need for conducting more empirical studies in the field. In response to this gap, the purpose of this research is to identify necessary competencies for global leadership effectiveness and test them empirically. Structural Equation Modelling was used as a research method with the data collected from a questionnaire of 175 respondents worldwide, mainly located in Europe. The results of the research showed that Cross-Cultural Experience, Cultural Flexibility and Stress Tolerance predict global leadership effectiveness. Furthermore, detailed explanation of each competency that predict global leadership effectiveness were provided. The results of this research have both theoretical and managerial implications. Firstly, it proves empirically and quantitatively the relationship between identified competencies and global leadership effectiveness. Secondly, the results of the research contribute to the existing literature where there is a limited amount of research that focus on understanding global leadership competencies and global leadership effectiveness.

Online shopping in different cultures and levels of technologies in relation to Customer Satisfaction: Accra (Ghana) and Stockholm (Sweden).2020Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background: This study examines online shopping in different cultures and technologies in relation to customer satisfaction in Stockholm and Accra; a developed city with a developing city respectively. In recent times, the use of the internet has rapidly increased around the globe and with it emerged online shopping as a means employed by which business organizations and individual sellers and service providers to maximize growth. Customer satisfaction is an essential element for attaining stability and growth in the business world and online shopping is no exception. Even though customer satisfaction is a universal phenomenon, it can be controlled by culture and technology.

Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to compare a developed city with a developing one and the interplay of culture and technology in achieving customer satisfaction in online shopping. This thesis therefore seeks to investigate the different cultures and technologies on satisfaction by ascertaining the degree to which factors relating to culture and technology affect customer satisfaction in online shopping.

Methodology: Quantitative research method is employed to conduct this thesis. By the use of the snowball sampling method, residents of both Stockholm and Accra were sampled and data collection was done by administering survey questionnaire. SPSS software package was used to analyse research data. The Spearman rank correlation and Mann-Whitney U test were performed using the SPSS software package to arrive at the research results and draw conclusions.

Results & Conclusions: This research demonstrates the existence of differences in the culture and technology of Stockholm and Accra. It also demonstrates the impact of selected factors for independent variables (culture and technology) on customer satisfaction in online by showing their inter-relationship. It also reveals the factors which most affected customer satisfaction in online shopping in this thesis. In general, the correlations demonstrated that culture had more impacts on customer satisfaction in online shopping as compared to technology. A good relationship was found between customer satisfaction and culture, and technology provided by the participants from Accra. For Stockholm participants, customer satisfaction in online shopping had a relationship with cultural factors. It was shown in the findings that all four factors measuring culture such as trust, moral, law, and knowledge, and only two factors measuring technology such as internet speed and tools affected customer satisfaction in online shopping in Accra with the most affected factors being trust and moral. In the case of Stockholm, only two factors measuring culture, such as moral and trust affected customer satisfaction in online shopping and moral most affected customer satisfaction. None of the four factors measuring technology affected customer satisfaction. All in all, considering both independent variables, we argued that culture (factors) affected most customer satisfaction in online shopping.

Recommendations for future research: Further research can be done by employing both qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques to know how these factors affect customer satisfaction in online shopping. In addition, to better generalize the results, further research could be done with the same concepts but with more factors used to measure the independent and dependent variables. Moreover, similar research could also be done by considering only one group of products or items bought online. Furthermore, the same or similar research can be done using more than one question to describe the factors or sub-variables. Last but not least, further research can deploy a larger sample size to facilitate generalization.

Lärande utvärdering: ESF-projektet Klara Livet : Implementeringsfasen 2013-20142014Report (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Följeutvärderingsrapport2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [sv]

Projekt Centrum för telemedicin: Följeutvärderingsrapport2014Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Kartläggning av chefers vardag i Karlskrona kommuns samlade verksamheter2015Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Measuring Disruptive Susceptibility: Insights from the ITS industry2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose. A small number of management theories have had as much influence in the business world as Clayton M. Christensen’s theory of disruptive innovation. Its key presupposition – that entrant companies with products or services that customers initially couldn’t use as it appears to have lower performance can supersede established companies – continues to create a significant impact on management practices and stimulate rich debate within academics. The goal of this thesis is to validate a specific framework available on the literature that assess the potential market entry of new companies as sources of disruptive innovations, named “disruptive susceptibility”, and gain new insights based on the findings of a qualitative study related to the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) industry. Trending topics on this fast paced evolving industry, such as “Connected Cars” or “Autonomous Vehicles” are creating a high source of inspiration and new technologies are emerging to address new ITS industry’s needs.

Methodology. Mixed methods research approach was applied utilizing convergent parallel mixed design. The research design process enabled an accurate confrontation of the disruptive susceptibility framework’s propositions against the target industry’s evidences collected from multiple relevant sources of evidences. Content validity and triangulation were applied to bring validity to the study.

Theory. Disruptive innovation, Disruptive Susceptibility, Industry life-cycle.

Conclusions. The disruptive susceptibility framework was validated for the ITS industry concluding that is a relevant instrument to identify and qualify the disruptive potential of new technologies. The results showed a high level of disruptive susceptibility in the ITS industry and the evidence gathered showed that conditional and accelerating propositions, when present, are most likely connected to an industry in a mature life-cycle stage. The study of the framework in further industries could provide more insights about this latter aspect. Furthermore, an additional proposition related to product life-cycles was proposed for the framework.

Applying the Technology Acceptance Model to AI decisions in the Swedish Telecom Industry2021Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    · Purpose

Artificial Intelligence is one of the trend areas in research. It is applied in many different contexts successfully including Telecom sector. The purpose of this study is to replicate the study done in application of AI in the medical sector to understand the similar challenges of using AI in the Telecom sector.

    · Design/Methodology/approach

Online questionnaire-based empirical study is used, and 190 responses were collected. First authors compare the general Technology acceptance model framework used in the medical sector and compare it with the non-AI users. Afterwards, this study proposes the improved TAM model that best fits into the Telecom sector. Later, this study uses the proposed improved model to compare the AI and non-AI users to understand the acceptance of AI-technology tools application in the Telecom sector.

    · Findings

Confirmatory Factor analysis revealed that the general TAM model fit is adequate and applicable in Medical sector as well as in the Telecom sector. Also, hypothesis testing using SEM concluded that the general supported paths between the constructs and variables related to PU, PEU, SN, ATU, and BI in the medical sector is not same as in the Telecom sector.

    · Research limitations

Results are based on the limited datasets from one of the larger companies in Telecom sector which could leads to inherent biases. Authors not sure if “AI-technology tools” in the questions have common understanding across all the respondents or not.

    · Results

TAM model cannot be generalized across the sectors. An improved model has been developed used in the Telecom sector to analyze the user’s behavior and acceptance of AI technology. An extended model has been proposed which can be used as a continuation of this study.

Förutsättningar för ökad omställningshastighet till elektrifierade transporter inom godstransportbranschen.: En kvalitativ studie kring adoptionen av elektrifieringslösningar för tunga transporter.2023Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

In an age where sustainability and reduced carbon dioxide emissions are highly prioritized, the transport sector faces one of its biggest challenges. Namely, reducing the environmental impact of heavy transport. In the search for solutions to make heavy transport more sustainable, electric roads and stationary charged trucks have emerged as promising alternatives. By replacing diesel trucks with electric alternatives, the solutions offer environmental benefits and contribute to Sweden's longer-term ability to achieve its climate goals. Increasing the speed of change is critical to accelerating the implementation of electrification and maximizing its positive effects on the environment and society. Therefore, it is of great interest to investigate the factors that influence the conversion process, as well as identify strategies and measures to promote a faster transition to electrified heavy transports. With this background, this study aims to investigate conditions and challenges for increasing the conversion rate of heavy transports. The study aims to gain a better understanding of the haulage companies' needs and preferences regarding the transition. Through semi-structured interviews with respondents from ten companies with varying needs, the results could be obtained, and several insights into the research question could be obtained. The analysis of the interviews, using Rogers' theory regarding the diffusion of innovation, gave rise to several barriers and driving forces for the change. The conditions that need to be created to increase the speed of the transition have then been based on the barriers and the respondents' answers. The results indicate that the speed of conversion to the electrification solutions in Sweden is controlled by the speed of adoption of the newly introduced technologies. Adoption, in turn, is affected by a series of driving forces and barriers. It is the barriers that prevent haulers from adopting the solutions. For electric roads, it has been established that the solution may be less interesting depending on the type of traffic that a company conducts. There is also uncertainty about whether electric roads will be built. Increased communication efforts by the authorities are required to spread knowledge about electric roads and address the uncertainty of potential users. When it comes to stationary charging, an electrified truck needs to achieve cost neutrality compared to a diesel truck. This can be achieved through financial support for the expansion of the charging infrastructure, subsidies, and financing services such as leasing. An additional prerequisite for increasing the adoption rate is forecasts and guarantees regarding electricity supply and electricity prices in the future. The technology for stationary charging needs to be developed further to meet the varying needs of companies in the market. The needs regarding the technology may differ from one company to another depending on the type of traffic and the goods being delivered. In order to speed up the conversion of the heaviest transports over 60 tons, the vehicles need to have reliable battery capacity. It is also necessary to offer a well-developed charging infrastructure to facilitate the electrification of all three types of transports, namely local, regional, and long-distance transport. Furthermore, knowledge-raising efforts by the authorities are required to counteract uncertainties regarding policies and future solutions. This study suggests initiatives such as the “effektkommissionen” of Region Skåne as a suitable communication channel between the actors involved. The initiative has the potential to address various uncertainties and make the solution more visible to potential users. By creating the proposed conditions, an increased rate of adoption can be achieved, which in turn, leads to Sweden fulfilling its climate goals.

The study aims to answer the question: How and why is thetemporary agency workers’ perceived fairness and motivation at work impacted by notreceiving any direct financial bonus from the user company?Method: We have conducted a qualitative approach and made the study within a chosencompany suitable for our purpose. The data have been collected through in-depth interviewsto be able to take part of the interview subjects’ opinions, attitudes and experiences. Results: The temporary agency workers experience a procedural and distributive injusticelinked to the financial bonus. However, no overall organizational injustice is experienced, which can be explained by the fact that the temporary agency workers as a whole experienceperceived fair treatment from the company. The perceived motivation is not affected by theexclusion from the financial bonus, due to the fact that the needs of the consultants associatedwith the work consist of the amount of work that is possible. The motivation is influenced bythe number of shifts and the opportunity to earn more money through more shifts.

Understanding the Impact of Rewards on Employees’ Creativity and Innovation: a Literature Review Study2016Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Purpose: The purpose of this master’s thesis is to study how organizational rewards; intrinsic rewards and extrinsic monetary and non-monetary rewards, affect employees’ creativity and innovation within an organizational environment, and to propose a new categorization of organizational rewards.

Methodology: A literature review of selected peer-reviewed studies from different countries and industries.

Findings: The results of this study support the following notions; (1) intrinsic rewards support employees’ creativity and innovation through their positive impact on intrinsic motivation; (2) extrinsic non-monetary rewards support employees’ creativity and innovation ; (3) extrinsic monetary rewards can support or hinder employees’ creativity and innovation depending on external organizational factors. This study suggests a new model which categorizes organizational rewards into two main groups; monetary and non-monetary instead of extrinsic and intrinsic, and the non-monetary one into intrinsic and extrinsic while the monetary group includes only extrinsic rewards.

Influencer advertising, sponsored, and non-sponsored: A study on how message types affect consumer purchase intention2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Social media influencer advertising is a fast-growing form of advertising. It has led to companies striking deals with influencers to benefit from the influencers’ big audiences of followers and social media users. Influencers promote the companies’ brands and/or products in exchange for a payment. Influencer advertising comes in two forms, sponsored and non-sponsored, factors that can have a significant effect on purchase intention when combined with different message types as pictures, text, and a combination of picture and text and trust.

    Objective

This report's primary goal is to study the effect of trust, message type, sponsored, and non-sponsored advertising on consumers' purchase intentions on social media and contribute to previous studies.

    Method

This study is a quantitative study with primary data. The method used for collecting the data is an online survey. The survey has been divided into two parts and sent out to the Swedish population who uses social media. One with questions on sponsored advertisements’ and another with questions of non-sponsored advertisements. In total, the surveys had 107 complete responses. The data was then analyzed using IBM’s SPSS program.

    Result

Tests for the first hypothesis found no significant difference in the mean values of sponsored and non-sponsored advertisements' effect on purchase intentions. The second hypothesis established that the use of a picture message-type in advertisements had a more significant impact on purchase intention then a combination of both text and picture. The last and final hypothesis result found that influencer advertisements, sponsored or non-sponsored did not affect consumers' trust in any significant way and therefore did not affect purchase intention.

    Conclusion

Companies should take into consideration the benefit of utilizing influencer-picture advertisements’ when it comes to the promotion of easily understood products, such as water bottles. Further work also needs to be done on more underlying factors that can affect consumers' purchase intentions.

How to turn innovations into value in a large manufacturing company2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years))Student thesis
    Abstract [en]

Large companies invest a vast amount of capital and time on R&D annually. With all this financial investment in R&D, it is important that the companies get value for their invested capital. By creating innovations, such as new products and services, involve high risk and will necessarily not lead to successful commercial ends. Many companies lack the competencies in selecting ideas and transform them into value. Knowledge in innovations is affecting companies, especially those that are investing heavily in R&D. The present study explain how value can be created from innovation around the topics of innovativeness, innovation protection and market efficiency, within a large global manufacturing company in Sweden with global operations. A four dimensional measure from a prior study has been the base for the structural theoretical model that has been tested. The authors have divided innovativeness, innovation protection and market efficiency into absorptive capacity (ACAP), open innovation, patents, secrecy, lead time advantages and complementary assets and studied modern literature to find relationships between these and how it affects firm performance. They have also done a survey and interviews to examine the present status in a large manufacturing company. The empirical findings show support for a relationship between ACAP and firm performance, ACAP and success of strategic alliances as well as a relationship between protection of innovation and success of strategic alliances.

Defect intention : the specific challenges faced by women in open source that may predict (or influence) their intention to leave an open source software project/community2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Open source is largely accepted as an important innovation driver in the technology industry. Even though inclusion and diversity is beneficial for the success of technology projects (including open source software projects), many statistics are pointing out that diversity in open source is even worse than in the technology sector in general. The unequal representation of minorities (in this limited scope study represented by women) has negative effects on the innovation potential of many tech-related companies and is a major cause of corporate companies’ concerns. To attract more women and increase their retention in open source software projects and communities, the understanding of reasons behind the decisions on why they leave/defect an open source project can be is essential for the development of the effective retention strategies in OSS.

    Objective

Based on the extensive literature review conducted by Trinkenreich, et al. (2021), only a few studies make a theoretical connection to why women leave (or avoid) open source software projects. This study aimed to explore the challenges faced by women in open source that may predict (or influence) their intention to leave/defect an open source software project/community. Thus, the following research question was formulated: What are the specific challenges faced by women in OS that may predict (or influence) their intention to leave an OSS project/community?

    Methodology

The initial in-depth literature review discovered a list of socio-cultural challenges faced by women when contributing to open source projects. Trinkenreich, et al. (2021) have grouped these challenges conceptually as follows: (1) Lack of peer parity; (2) Non-inclusive communication; (3) Toxic culture; (4)  Impostor syndrome; (5) Community reception issues; (6) Stereotyping; (7) Work-life balance issues, (8) Gender-identified contributions. Additionally, one of the authors of this study found an existing dataset on the state of diversity, equity, and inclusion in open source as of 2021. The survey ‘2021 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Open Source’ was developed and distributed by the Linux Foundation. The data for this survey was gathered in 2021 from 2,350 individuals, particularly, from the Foundation’s subscribers and community members, on questions about their sense of inclusion and belongingness in OS communities. The authors of this study made the initial mapping of the questions from the Linux Foundation survey against challenge-clustering developed by Trinkenreich, et al. (2021). This helped to isolate the following groups of challenges for this study: (1) Non-Inclusive Communication & Community Reception Issues; (2) Toxic Culture; and (3) Gender-Identified Contributions & Stereotyping, that are likely to contribute to women leaving/defecting an OSS project/community. Altogether, this helped to formulate two hypotheses: null  (H0) and alternative  (HA) which highlight the relationships between different variables in the dataset. The hypotheses were tested using multiple regression analysis. To test the hypotheses and answer the research question, the authors of this study did not design the survey questions themselves but rather observed them directly through the questions of the Linux Foundation survey. In the context of this study (viz., a small-scale applied research project) capitalizing on the secondary data made sense as explained further in the study. A multiple regression was carried out to explore whether any of the challenges (e.g., lack of response to or rejection of contributions or questions; experience of conflict or interpersonal tension between you and another contributor; experience of written or spoken language that made a women feel unwelcome; experience of threats of violence, stalking; experience of unsolicited sexual advances or comments; experience of stereotyping based on perceived demographic characteristics; experience of impersonation or malicious publication of personal information; experience of background-based harassment) could significantly predict (or influence) women’s intention to leave/defect an open source software project/community.

    Results

The results of multiple regression analysis reject the null hypothesis. The following predictors (i.e., independent variables): Q17_04_violence_stalking_experience, Q17_06_stereotyping_experience, and Q18_background_based_harassment are statistically significant and thus contribute to the regression models because their statistical significance (i.e., the p-value) is less than 0.05. Based on the findings of the study, the challenges that may predict (or influence) women’s intention to leave/defect an open source software project/community can be formulated as follows:

o   For the sample ‘North America (Unites States, Canada, Mexico)’

§  [Model 1] experience of threats of violence, stalking directed at women in the context of an open source project

§  [Model 2] experience of threats of violence, stalking and of harassment connected to their background directed at women in the context of an open source project

    o   For the sample ‘Europe’

§  [Model 1] experience of stereotyping based on perceived demographic characteristics directed at women in the context of an open source project

§  [Model 2] experience of stereotyping based on perceived demographic characteristics and threats of violence, stalking directed at women in the context of an open source project

    Conclusions

Women’s intention to leave/defect an OSS project/community can be explained by the following prediction models (i.e., regression equations):

o   For the sample ‘North America (Unites States, Canada, Mexico)’

    §  [Model 1]  Y = 0.892 – (0.413 * Q17_04_violence_stalking_experience)

    §  [Model 2]  Y = 0.991 – (0.328 * Q17_04_violence_stalking_experience) – (0.228 * Q18_background_based_harassment)

    o   For the sample ‘Europe’

    Contribution to theory and practice

Academic value: The findings of this study extend the knowledge about specific challenges faced by women in OS that may predict (or influence) their intention to leave an OSS project/community. Insights for adopting ‘Innovation by All’ workplace culture: The findings of this study provide OSS projects/communities with insights into the hindrances and determinants associated with women’s participation in OS. These insights, in their turn, can be valuable to understand and be aware of when an OSS team/community aims to adopt an ‘Innovation by All’ workplace culture and by doing so  - attain greater team productivity, more innovative and more revolutionary ideas, greater agility, and higher rates of ideas’ implementation, decision-making, and innovation. Internal analysis: The results of this study can be used to inform OSS teams/communities about the most critical aspects they need to address in order to attract more and retain existing female talent. Thus, the findings of this study can serve as an internal analysis for an OSS team/ community to take further actions on including and diversifying their project teams and ensuring that all members stay and keep on contributing to OSS projects.

    Recommendations for future research

The following research proposals are suggested: (1) An extensive quantitative study amongst female contributors of various OSS projects/communities and a comparative analysis of these communities based on different parameters. (2) A replication of this study that examines/explores the specific challenges faced by the representatives of other minority groups in OS that may predict (or influence) their intention to leave an OSS project/community. (3) A comparative study (e.g., women versus men; women versus binary/no-gender participants; and so on) about challenges faced by them in OS that may predict (or influence) the intention to leave an OSS project/community.

Breaking the Time Preference: A study of home delivery2022Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

Background. E-commerce is ever expanding, and with it, so is last-mile delivery. Last-mile delivery is the last part of any delivery from a retailer or etailer (online retailer) to a consumer. Last-mile delivery is one of the most costly parts of the supply chain for many etailers and as such efforts have been made to understand what drives preferences for last-mile delivery. To broaden this field, this study will introduce time preference theory to the last-mile delivery and examine if delayed payment of an online purchase has any effect on the last-mile deliver preferences.

Objectives. The objectives of this study are to examine if delayed payment of online purchases has any effect on the last-mile delivery preference for consumers, as well as broaden the knowledge on last-mile delivery preferences in general. This is done with the inclusion of time preference theory as an underlying theory.

Methods. The study is carried out through the use of an experiment study with an experiment survey. The survey was made into three different versions, distributed to three different experiment groups. The data was then tested with a non-parametric proportion test with varying values of proportion to see whether there was any significant proportion of the replies that were in favor of delay of payment having any effect on the consumer preference.

Results. The results of the study showed that consumers generally choose the last-mile delivery option with the lowest delivery fee. This is in line with previous findings which concluded that delivery fee and delivery speed are the two most important factors for consumers. The only case in which consumers indicated that there was any effect of the payment delay was in the case of an expensive product. Even then it is hard to rule out that it was not something else that brought this result.

Conclusions. The concluding findings of the study is that while time preference was added as an attribute for last-mile delivery, it had little to no effect. This may have been because of the study design of this study. For future research on the topic, examining time preference in a greater depth may give different findings from this study.

Proof That Voluntary Corporate Responsibility Investments Does Not Affect Financial Returns When in the News2017Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This paper presents the results of financial return analyses after 133 articles regarding social and environmental news were published in Svenska Dagbladet. During the period from 2006 to 2015 Swedish Large Cap companies were analysed after the news announcements, using the event study methodology. The study shows that abnormal returns were significant for only three events at the announcement date. A regression analysis shows that firms issuing ESG reports do not significantly have distinct returns from non-issuing firms when in the news. The study shows that firms producing consumer goods or services experienced 0.5 percent significant return differences compared to other firms in the pre-announcement period (two days). Findings also suggest that there are no significant differences between different industries when in the news regarding social and environmental aspects. An analysis of means shows no implications of differences regarding articles of: equality, employees, society or environment. This study concludes that voluntary corporate responsibility acts are not premiered when a firm is in the news regarding social or environmental events.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of our research was to make a comprehensive and comparative study. We wanted to examine the working men and women with and without children living at home and how they perceive stress at work and family demands. Perceived stress may occur when men and women with children are torn between work and family demands. We discuss the various coping strategies with focus on age and gender, and examine whether there are differences between full-time and part-time working women and men, and their perceived stress level. We also examine how women and men under the age of 40 use more coping strategies than women and men over the age of 40. To measure coping we use occupational health services Prevent due's stress test for employees. The results shows correlations between men with children and stress when it comes to family demands. Women with children living at home are experiencing more stress related to workload and the thought that it is harder to recover from stress than men with children living at home. When it comes to coping strategies, we found no significant relationship between women and men under 40 and women and men over the age of 40. Participants in the study were 53 women and men both with and without children living at home aged under and over 40 years old.

Kitting in an Autonomous Multi-Model Environment: A Descriptive Model and an Evaluation at Volvo Cars2020Independent thesis Advanced level (professional degree), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Many firms seek to embrace mass customization, a strategy that brings competitive advantages. Adopting mass customization impacts the area of assembly line feeding as it is a central point of the manufacturing process of firms. A research field on the line feeding has been defined as the assembly line feeding problem (ALFP), which addresses how different line feeding policies perform under varying circumstances. One of the existing line feeding policies, kitting, can be used to improve flexibility in production. There is today a lack of knowledge on how multi-model lines are affected by kitting, which this study intends to provide.

    Objectives

The objective of the study is to disseminate knowledge about the performance of line feeding policies. In specific, the thesis studies the impact that different levels of kitting have on multi-model assembly lines that operates in the automotive industry, when batch sizes are decreased.

    Method

Following the optimisation process, a descriptive model has been built to portray and react to the choice of line feeding method for firms utilising multi model lines. The descriptive model is then complemented with a ranking procedure called Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). This tool gives access to the importance of the impacts that a line feeding policy has on firms, without relying on monetary values.

    Results

The results of our study show that different scenarios are optimal depending on batch sizes. The results from the thesis show that kitting was preferable compared to line stocking when batch sizes are lowered. This by proving to be the optimal line feeding solution when batch sizes are decreased to cover ⅒ and ⅕ of the daily demand. If the batch size is ½ of the daily demand, a hybrid feeding approach showed to be a feasible option.

    Conclusions

This study highlights the superiority of kitting for large firms in the automotive industry, using multi-model assembly lines when batch sizes are reduced. A finding that is highly relevant in today’s manufacturing industry as they follow the trend of mass customisation.

    Abstract [en]

This study assesses whether student exclusions from PISA 2018 in Sweden followed the criteria set by the OECD. We do this using both qualitative and quantitative methods. Our conclusion is that the exclusions made in PISA 2018 in Sweden did not follow OECD criteria and were much too high. Furthermore, interviews with school coordinators indicate that many of them misunderstood the OECD criteria. We also conclude that the National Agency for Education did not sufficiently follow up on exclusions. A review of the Swedish exclusion rate made by the OECD did not present credible results but accepted the results. A recalculation of PISA 2018 scores for Sweden where we assume non-participating students to be low performers show that results are significantly affected.

    Abstract [sv]

Coliving - Transition towards sustainability: A comparable case study of coliving and single-living2022Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 credits / 30 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

    Background

Modern capitalist societies have consumption at the core of their social and economic activities. This is one of the underlying problems that sustainability is facing. In need of solutions and avenues for limiting our footprint and consumption, we turn towards alternative solutions such as coliving as a potential for facilitating sustainable lifestyles in their residents.

    Objectives

The overall purpose of this thesis is to investigate coliving impacts on the sustainability practices of residents within the Swedish urban environment. To do this effectively, the theoretical framework of this thesis will primarily utilize practice theory, as well as institutional theory and clan control theory to a secondary degree, to explore their interactions between coliving social structures and residential agents in terms of following sustainable activities and compare those with a single living household. Through conducting interviews with the residents of the Coliving and single living in line with these frameworks, this thesis aims to explore to a greater degree how the coliving housing model can contribute to more sustainable lifestyles.

    Methods

A qualitative research strategy was chosen for the study with a two-case comparative study design. To further explore the complexity of the interactions between agents and properties of social structures, data collection methods were utilized, such as semi-structured interviews with residents of coliving and single-living. The analytical approach was conducted through a thematic data analysis method.

    Results

The Coliving initiative stimulates sustainable lifestyles by creating a set of social structures and cultural rules that promotes interaction, diversity, and sustainable lifestyles. The design of the Coliving initiative activated the most evident and impactful change mechanisms. Specifically, the built environment that is diverse and flexible and facilitates variations of facilities and immense recourses accessible for the residents to interact and use for different moods and behaviors. The recruitment process facilitates a foundation of balance between diversity and like-minded individuals for learning potentials and collaboration. The governance structure of the community-based organization is nonhierarchical participatory, and consensus-based, and the community is self-organized. These features have shown to promote collaboration and interaction between individuals and stimulate sustainable practices. Last, the cultural rules of the community also promote interactions and collaboration, as well as many of the social sustainability principles and anti-consumption practices.

    Conclusions

The coliving, compared to the single-living, has much more quantitive, qualitative, and diverse set of structures with sustainable properties that brings the residents more or less into the situation where a greening of their corresponding lifestyles becomes a very convenient option.

Start-up rates, entrepreneurship culture and the business cycle: Swedish patterns from national and regional data2015In: Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the Global Economy: Knowledge, Technology and InternationalizationNew Horizons in Regional Science series / [ed] Charlie Karlsson, Urban Gråsjö, Sofia Wixe, Northampton: Edward Elgar Publishing, 2015, p. 162-183Chapter in book (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

It is often claimed that there are locally embedded values and attitudes towards entrepreneurship, exerting a strong influence on the rate and level of entrepreneurial activity in regions. The concept of regional entrepreneurship culture aims to capture such phenomena, and refers in a general sense to the level of social acceptance and encouragement of entrepreneurs and their activities in a region. This chapter discusses regional entrepreneurship culture as a source of persistent differences in regional rates of new firm formation, and presents a number of empirical regularities for Sweden to illustrate the empirical relevance of the main arguments. Using data on rates of new firm formation across Swedish regions over time, the chapter further explores the association between start-up activity and the business cycle, as well as how the geographic distribution of start-up rates changes during a major economic crisis.

R&D strategies and Entrepreneurial Spawning2012In: Research Policy, ISSN 0048-7333, E-ISSN 1873-7625, Vol. 41, no 1Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This paper analyzes how different R&D strategies of incumbent firms affect the quantity and quality of their entrepreneurial spawning. By examining entrepreneurial ventures of ex-employees of firms with different R&D strategies three things emerge: First, firms with persistent R&D investments with a general superiority in sales, exports, productivity, profitability and wages are less likely to generate entrepreneurs than firm with temporary or no R&D investments. Second, start-ups from knowledge intensive business service (KIBS) firms with persistent R&D investments have a significantly increased probability of survival. No corresponding association between the R&D strategies of incumbents and survival of entrepreneurial spawns is found for incumbents in manufacturing sectors. Third, spin-outs from KIBS-firms are more likely to survive if they start in the same firm, indicating the importance of inherited related knowledge. The findings suggest that R&D intensive firms spur fewer entrepreneurs, but their entrepreneurial spawns tend to be of higher quality.

Leaving the multinational: The likelihood and nature of employee mobility from MNEs2022In: Journal of International Business Studies, ISSN 0047-2506, E-ISSN 1478-6990Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

The mobility of workers from multinational enterprises (MNEs) to other local firms is increasingly recognized as an important externality mechanism. However, MNEs have strong incentives to curb this mobility to prevent leakage of firm-specific assets. This research note investigates the likelihood and nature of such mobility patterns. Using longitudinal, matched employer–employee data for Sweden with detailed information on individuals, establishments, and firms, we find that workers employed in MNEs are more likely to leave their employers compared to similar workers employed in non-MNEs with similar characteristics. This effect is particularly strong for high-wage workers and managers. While we find that workers who leave MNEs are more likely to move to other MNEs, our results identify significant mobility toward start-ups, thus leading to important industrial dynamics in the host country. We discuss the implications of these results for research on the externalities from MNEs, and international business theory. © 2022, Academy of International Business.

Spatial variations in financial constraints of SMEs-evidence from firm-level estimates of investment-cash flow sensitivities in Sweden2023In: Small Business Economics, ISSN 0921-898X, E-ISSN 1573-0913, Vol. 60, no 4, p. 1683-1698Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Plain English Summary We show that small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) located outside the main city regions are more dependent on internal cash flow in their investments compared to SME urban city regions. Our findings clearly show that, as access to agglomerated economies decreases, financial constraints faced by the SMEs increase. The investment ability of SMEs in rural regions depends on own cash flow more but revenues in smaller regions tend to be smaller too-implying that the cash flow is likely to be lower. As a result, SMEs in smaller and more remote places would find it harder to invest and, therefore, to grow or increase productivity. The fact that such a consistent pattern of increasing investment-cash flow sensitivity is clearly observable in Sweden, one of the least regionally unequal countries, only reinforces the importance of considering the spatial dimension in policies targeted at closing SME financing gap. It is well established that there is uneven availability of credit across space, in particular for SMEs. The evidence on whether this translates into differences in actual business investments remains scarce. We assess this question by using firm-level data for Swedish firms and estimate the extent to which the average investment-cash flow sensitivities of firms vary across the urban-rural hierarchy. We find that the world of financing is not yet flat for the majority of Swedish SMEs. Companies located in non-metro regions are most dependent on own cash flow in their investments. The results hold for all firms, firms of different sizes, firms operating in low-end services, unaffiliated firms and those belonging to domestic corporations. In contrast, investment-cash flow sensitivity of firms operating in high-tech services and those belonging to a multinational enterprise does not differ geographically. On average, regional investment-cash flow sensitivity is lower in bigger, denser and more educated local labour market regions; it is higher in regions with greater concentration of SMEs.

    Abstract [en]

There is no tradition in Annals of Regional Science that the editors write editorials. However, as of 2020, the editors will each year write an editorial in which we report as well as reflect on recent developments of the journal. We hope that this will be of interest for our readers. This editorial is the first one and marks the start of the strategy to write a yearly editorial. We, i.e., Martin Andersson (Sweden), Hong Sok Kim (South Korea) and Janet Kohlhase (USA), are by some standards a rather new constellation of editors-in-chief (EICs). Janet Kohlhase became an editor in 2011, replacing professor Roger Stough.1 Martin Andersson joined as editor in 2014 and replaced professor Börje Johansson. Hong Sok (Brian) Kim became an editor in 2019 by replacing profes-sor Euijune Kim. The former EICs continue to be part of the journal in the capacity as members of the advisory board of former editors. We are all delighted to serve as EICs and are committed to maintain as well as to further develop the journal’s tradition of publishing high-quality and influential research that pushes the field of regional science forward.
