    Abstract [en]

Socialstyrelsen (2021) reports that 8300 children and young people in Sweden were placed on a so called HVB during 2020. HVB stands for hem för vård eller boende which in english terms is equal to a home for care or housing. HVB was during 2020 the second most common form of placement for children and adolescents. Socialstyrelsen (2018) reports that social workers working within HVB are responsible for meeting young people's care needs in the form of various treatments. Research done by Mattson (2010) suggests that HVB is a closed environment, which can result in social workers that are active in these care homes become identification objects for the young people who are placed in these care homes.

Treatment staff in HVB homes work with adolescents who are in need of support and help. Social workers are expected to work gender-consciously to meet the individual needs of adolescents. Previous research shows that HVB is a complex environment that requires flexibility on the part of treatment staff and that interventions do not always lead to the best results. Newly graduated social workers are expected to possess knowledge as critical awareness of how gender affects treatment work.

We have chosen to investigate how newly graduated social workers who are active in HVB homes reflect about the fact that gender is done in treatment work and how they act with adolescents as gender awareness is part of the newly graduated social workers' education. The results of the study showed that the reflections of newly graduated social workers confirm previous research's explanation that gender is made in the treatment work with adolescents and which in turn affects how the staff's treatment work is designed. The result highlights that norms, stereotypes and gender perceptions that society produces affect the treatment work despite the social workers' gender awareness through education. Through the study, we also see the desire to counteract these gender notions and its ability to influence treatment work but that it is difficult.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this paper was to study what impact sports participation has on young people and how nonprofit people and representatives of sports associations work to counter exclusion and how they contribute to inclusion. We investigated if, and if so how, participation in sports and physical activities can generate inclusion and counteract exclusion for young people. In this study we have completed six qualitative interviews with non-profit persons and representatives of sports associations. We interviewed two people who work voluntarily in sports and four people who have a leadership role in sports associations in a specific municipality. This selection was made in order for us to get a broader picture of how the strategies of non-profit and associations might differ in practice regarding exclusion and inclusion for young people. Based on our respondents' answers from the interviews, we have identified four main themes; expectations and demands, the socialization arena, working methods and the negative and positive factors of sports. We analyzed these themes based on previous research and theory sections and to our purpose and issues. The main conclusion we made was that sport contributes to community, belonging, joy, exercise, reduced risk of physical and mental illnesses and facilitates the integration of newly immigrated youth. Our conclusion regarding negative factors with sports are that young people might develop some form of eating disorder, overload their bodies if they exercise too much and that the risks of getting physical injuries might increase if they participate in sports too much. In response to our last research question, it emerges that economy might be an exclusive factor that sport associations try to prevent in different ways. The associations and the working methods of the non-profit people differ in terms of generating inclusion and counteracting exclusion.

    Abstract [en]

The idea of this study is based on the legislative process of the Swedish temporary asylum law. Due to an increasing number of request for asylum in 2015, the parliament appointed a temporary asylum law to create a more restrictive migration policy. This measure was criticized by several parliamentary committees which were emphasising different negative aspects that could possibly affect the refugees. The government responded to the critics by referring to the EU minimum level and by comparison with other EU countries. In 2019 the parliament decided to extend the temporary law even though the number of asylum seekers had decreased. The main argument for this extension was to prevent an increasing amount of asylum seekers as soon as the migration policy in Sweden were to become more generous again. Previous research has shown that not long after the first proposition of the temporary asylum law the law was implemented, indicating a rushed decision made by the Swedish parliament.

Thus is our purpose with this study to examine the political negotiations of the legislative process regarding the temporary asylum law and its extension. In addition to that the aim of the study is also to research if the extension of the law contributed to different discourses. Through a critical discourse analysis our main conclusion is that the underlying negotiations of the legislative process cover four main areas: economy and resources, EU, the asylum system and consequences. Within each field we discovered discourses that could be applicable in both the legislative process of 2016 and in the process of extension 2019. Nevertheless the result of the analysis also presented two discourses that became important parts in relation to the extension. These discourses were convention on the rights of the child and EU. Even though these discourses could be found in the first legislative process, they reach a remarkably higher state of importance in the extension of the asylum law and therefore are appointed as new since they did not held the same level of relevance before.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to examine the concept of “integration” within residential care homes for unaccompanied children. More specifically its aim was to find out how the social workers themselves within residential care homes for unaccompanied children understand the concept of integration and how they work for it. The study was based on a qualitative semi-structured interviews with seven social workers within four residential care homes for unaccompanied children. Six themes were identified that seemed to play a role in the discussions about integration: development-acceptance, learning process, communication & relationships, process, personality and common sense. The analysis was based on previous research in the field and the theory of action by Pierre Bourdieu called practical reason. As a conclusion the first three themes can be seen as an understanding of the concept of “integration”. The last three themes exemplify the practical integration work. Despite the lack of regulatory documents, the social workers show a common understanding of the concept and a similar implementation which can be explained by a dominant implicit doxa within the field.

    Abstract [en]

This studie explores how a promotive youth movement that aims to activate adolescents in economically and socially exposed areas, can affect the youth’s participation in society and oppose their experience of stigmatization. The youth movement, whom is being studied, uses urban art expressions as a mean to engage and motivate the adolescents. The empirism has mostly been collected by a limited participatory observation, and through qualitative interviews with staff and adolescents in the movement. The result has been analyzed through Pierre Bourdieus field theory. To summarise, field theory consists in the hypothesis that the individual is socialized in to his or her way of thinking and being (habitus), based on in which circumstances the individual is raised (in which field). Habitus affects the choices the individual makes throughout life. An individuals habitus is affected by three types of capital, which Bourdieu has named economical-, social-, and cultural capital. This essay analyzes how the promotive youth movement contributes to the adolescent’s social- and cultural capital. I have found that this largely happens by giving the adolescents different types of tools to be seen and heard, based on the concept of hip hop as a political instrument. The most prominent tool in the everyday activities is the opportunity to record music in a professional studio. Other tools that are used are the opportunity to host the movements own radio show, participate in the arranging of different types of events, and such. I have also found that the support from an extra adult and the connection within the movement are central providers of social capital.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to analyse how Swedish courts reason about the child's best in custody and access disputes. We have assumed different themes to analyse our empirical data, these themes were the child's best interests, perspective on the child's best interests, child's perspective, children as subjects or objects and finally the right of the child or the child's best interests. Our empirical data have consisted of 15 City Court and Court of Appeal judgments of the Swedish courts handed down in 2015. The study had a qualitative disposition and the selection was made strategically to make sure the empirical data would be relevant to our issues. We have used a discourse analysis where the intention was to study how the court reason about the child’s interests and what statements that gets preference and what gets excluded in the assessment. Our theoretical starting point was extracted from Foucault’s theory about power and his discourse concept. We have used the concept of his theory in our analysis, but also extracted the theoretical concepts from previous research. The result shows that the Court's assessment of what is in the child’s best interest is based primarily on a professional and adult perspective on the child's situation. The individual child's perspective was excluded and the Court was principally talking about children's needs and interests in general. The result also showed that children were seen as objects and not as participants in the majority of the cases.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of the study was to gain a deeper understanding of the administrative officials work with assessments in home studies of adoption. To answer the purpose, we chose to focus on the guidelines for administrative official’s assessments in home studies of adoption and what assessment areas that is fundamental to the administrative official’s assessments. The study is structured on the basis of a qualitative approach where we have used semi-structured interviews. We interviewed seven administrative officials in the social services which conducted home studies of adoption. The interviews were conducted in different municipalities in order to demonstrate that the result does not depend on local circumstances. We can however say that administrative officials in the various municipalities had close cooperation among themselves, which resulted in that the local factor could have some impact on the result. We have analysed the results based on theories of discretion and the street-level bureaucracy. We have in this study concluded that all administrative officials used the same guidelines and almost all of the administrative officials used the same investigation method. Even though all the administrative officials emanated from the same guidelines and though almost all of the seven administrative officials also used the same investigating method, we discovered in the results and analysis section that the implementation in home studies of adoption may differ between administrative officials in the various municipalities. We have interpreted this result as a consequence based on how each administrative official uses their discretion. Furthermore we found that the administrative officials did not think that there was one assessment area that was more important. There are a number of areas that are important to consider which depends on the applicant's background.

    Abstract [sv]

The Sounds of Silence: Making Sense of the Absence of Domestic Violence Victims Help Seeking During the COVID-19 Pandemic2024Inngår i: Violence against Women, ISSN 1077-8012, E-ISSN 1552-8448Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Increased concern was raised globally at the outbreak of COVID-19 that victims of domestic violence would be even more at risk when isolated with a violent partner and out of reach of support due to restrictions. Swedish staff in violence against women services prepared for increased calls for help. Instead, a worrying silence arose in a time and place of high uncertainty. This article analyzes the narratology of risk, when staff members in violence against women services, reflect upon their accounts, responses, and experiences, during the pandemic. The analysis is based on three themes, accounting for expected increased influx, making sense of silence and accounting for mobilization. The findings are discussed by applying the relational theory of risk.

Title: Disability policy program – a case study of a municipals implementation of UNs Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

    Supervisor: Marianne Westring-Nordh

    Assessor: Ulf Drugge

This study aims to examine how a small municipal in southern Sweden works with the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and examine the assistant officers knowledge about this work and user organizations inclusion and user involvement.

The study operates from a qualitative approach based on the results of nine semi-structured interviews with local politicians, assistance officers and representatives from three different user organizations.

The results show that the municipal has chosen to work with the implementation of the convention by creating policy programs for their departments through dialogue with user organizations, and by mapping the accessibility to public places. The results also show that the assistant officers have been given no information regarding the convention or the policy programs from their employers and instead operate from national legislations and prepositions. The user organizations feel that they were initially included in the process, but that their impact has later been removed due to structural reorganization.

    Abstract [en]

The study describes five autobiographies of women who have been victims of domestic violence, in order to then analyse the processes that enable women to leave a violent husband. The questions I wanted to look in too were: How do the women in the autobiographies describe the process when they free themselves from the man?  What are the difficulties women face in the process of getting out of a violent relationship and how to explain this process?  How experience and process the woman the relationship to the man after she left him? It appears that women are feeling great in the beginning of the relationships.  The men were loving and allure. This changed and the men exerted violence and tried to control and demanded the women's adaptation. Control and customization go hand in hand and are becoming gradually stronger. The process is gradually changing, not on a conscious level, that the destructive, violent relationship becomes normalized. The paper deals with the normalization process, emotional ties, breaking-up processes and exit process. The study is based on the hermeneutists perspective. Narrative analyse is also used in order to decode the autobiographies. For a woman to succeed with the breakup, she must recognize that she must leave the man and make decisions for herself. Insight gives women the strength to move on from the relationship. All the women in the autobiographies describe that they have broken free from the relationship and that they now lead a good life.

    Abstract [en]

Currently, eldercare has trouble with recruiting employees, which results in an increase in staff turnover. High turnover affects the quality of care and reduces motivation and job satisfaction. Raising motivation and job satisfaction would improve the well-being of both the staff and the elderly. The aim of this study was to examine hygiene factors and motivation factors according to Herzberg’s twofactor theory of care-home staff. This was examined according to which factors motivates staff to stay at their workplace. Data was gathered using a questionnaire, designed with the help of Herzberg’s 14 factors. The participants for the study were chosen because of availability to the study in terms of time and geographical proximity. 43 respondents participated in the study. The data of the study was analyzed through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Results showed that the most positive estimated hygiene factors were interpersonal relations (40%) and job security (37%). The most positive estimated motivation factors were responsibility (44%) and recognition (37%). The factors that the respondent thought motivated them to stay at their workplace were work itself (56%) and job security (49%). We did not find a significance of the inferential statistics, but we found a significance correlation between the estimated hygiene and motivation factors (r = .73, P <. 001). In conclusion, both hygiene factors and motivation factors were equally as important to staff’s motivation to stay at their workplace. The study enlightens the importance of understanding what creates job satisfaction of care home staff to decrease turnover among staff and increase the well-being and the quality of care for the elderly.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to investigate how family law secretaries in Sweden works with fulfilling the best interests of the child in collaboration talks and how they get children involved in the process. I have performed five semi-constructed interviews with family law secretaries from different municipalities. In order to achieve broader answers to my questions I have chosen to use a qualitative method. This method was also chosen to enable the possibility of follow-up questions. I gathered data from previous research in this area by searching after these keywords; child’s best, collaboration talk, custody, family law, children’s participation in investigations. The collected data was then analyzed with three different theories; Michael Lipsky’s theory about grass root bureaucrats, Svensson, Johansson & Laanemets’ theory about the social worker role and Roger Hart’s participation model.  The participants that were interviewed all stated that it was difficult to fulfill the child’s best as it is an open concept that can be interpreted differently depending on the secretary’s individual knowledge and scope. Among the participants there were some of them that had deeper knowledge concerning the principle of the child’s best. This knowledge had been achieved through further education which ensures higher certainty that the child’s best has been fulfilled, but also raises awareness on when participation of the child in collaboration talk is possible. For those secretaries that are lacking this deeper knowledge in this principle agree that there are difficulties to ensure that the child’s best has been fulfilled. Because of the difference in knowledge there were variances in deciding when it was possible for a child to participate in the collaboration talk. Some of the secretaries thought that it was important to get the children involved in collaboration talks, but some thought that collaboration talks were not a platform for small children to participate in. This means that children are encountered in different ways depending on which family law secretary they meet and in what municipality the collaboration talk is held in.

    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes and analyses in three substudies how home-based measures for children are expanding and why an open care idea are established as part of the Swedish child welfare. The first substudy describes the national increment of what today can be considered as a treatment policy – non-institutional care in child welfare. The results are analysed with Kingdon's agenda setting theory and shows that the factors of what Kingdon describes as problems-, politics- and policyflow influenced the national increment. Significant mechanisms have primarily been, the profession, the society's concerns for socially disadvantaged children, negative experiences of institutionalisation and a political position to deinstitutionalise all care. The second substudy focuses on how knowledge and research contributes to ideological, professional, and organizational change in child welfare by analysis of Research & Developments reports and articles from the professional journal Socionomen. Based on the neo-institutional concepts of organisational fields and isoformism the study's results shows that a consequence of adaptation strategies and "rationalized myths" are a number of similarities in how home-based measures are organized and which measures that are used. The third substudy, a case study, analyses how we can understand a local development of ideas in social services for children with concepts from neo institutional theory. Interviews and municipal documents are analysed and shows that the local translation of an open care idea is characterized by discretion, personal preferences and action and affects the choice of method and organization. The study also shows a political mistrust of institutional care while there is at the same time political confidence in the individual social worker's ability to find solutions that allow non-institutional measures to be an alternative to institutional care.

An overall conclusion of the thesis is that there is now a treatment policy in social services for the children, which involves extensive efforts at home and it has led to that more children receive support from social services. One result of non-institutional care increment is that it led to increased costs for municipalities for intervention for children and young people when out-of-home care has not decreased. Another general conclusion is that translation and adaptation of ideas to local contexts is something that generally fits street-level bureaucrats need for discretion.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to investigate how administrators of financial aid experience that legislation and municipal guidelines take a children’s rights perspective into consideration, and whether there, within the organizational structure and its norms, is room for maneuvering in order to meet the needs of children. A children’s perspective has since long been included in Socialtjänstlagen and has only gotten stronger since The Convention on the Rights of the Child became a part of Swedish legislation. According to research prior to this study the public debate has been lively as to what is an acceptable living standard for children and whether or not the conditions should be allowed to be affected by the limited recourses of the guardians. The results of the study show how the financial aids administration mainly focuses on an adult perspective where demands on guardians sometimes trump the needs of children. Furthermore, the study shows that there is no unanimous answer to what can be considered a reasonable standard of living for children. This causes administrators of financial aid to be caught between two contradictory sensations. On the one hand they feel relatively free in how they can maneuver within the guidelines given by the organization, on the other hand they are restrained by national guidelines. In summary it is apparent that the children’s rights perspective within financial aid is dependent on a large number of parameters ranging from the individual human standpoint to the national and formal ones, all of which need to be taken into consideration.

Osäkerhet i ärendehantering: En kvantitativ vinjettstudie om socialsekreterares hantering av barnavårdsärenden2019Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Social workers within child protection are faced with complex cases where they must comply with guidelines and regulations and at the same time also use the knowledge and experience that they as professionals have gained through the work. Research shows that there is also uncertainty among social workers in the management of child cases. The purpose of this study was to investigate, through a survey, whether there is an uncertainty in case management and decision-making regarding children who experience domestic violence. The purpose was also to investigate whether there is a variation regarding social worker’s education, experience and case management where children experience violence. The study is based on the concepts profession and institutionalization. The results of the survey show that the social worker feels confident in decision-making concerning child cases. However, a variation regarding social workers uncertainty in investigation is shown, where some are more confident and others not at all. Results also show that the majority of the social workers have a social science degree. The social workers consider that they have little or no knowledge and experience of children experiencing violence. The social workers had to handle fictitious cases where they all agree to open investigations to both cases. However, there was a variation regarding what intervention they recommend for the cases. Although the social workers have stated that the guidelines in their workplace provide support in case management, they consider that they have relatively large scope for action and self-determination. This may lead to that they choose different interventions when assessing. This can eventually result in the cases being handled differently depending on which social worker handles the case.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of our thesis has been to examine and establish an understanding for the working method that professional social workers have in the meeting with suicidal adolescents in regard to discovery and treatment. Further we were also interested in whether differences in the working methods exist depending on the sexes of the adolescents. The method has been qualitative in the form of semi-structured interviews conducted with seven professional social workers in Sweden and analyzed with help of two theories, empowerment and gender-theory. Results have shed light on the importance of relationship building that takes place in conversational context. Social workers rely highly on empathy and respect during supportive treatment sessions as well as having an eye out for detecting initial signals of suicidality, which require sensitivity and attention. In regard to adapting the working methods to youth gender, results have shown that the social workers rather adapt to the individual than the specific gender, hence providing a question whether further research in terms of help seeking abilities between the different sexes is needed in social work.

    Abstract [en]

Consuming alcohol can affect the mental and physical health, lead toaddiction and affect the development of the brain before the age of 25.Nevertheless binge drinking remains a widespread problem amongstuniversity students. Drinking norms in people's surroundings can affect theirdrinking habits. This study aims to understand why students consume alcohol and the apprehension of the drinking norm on a campus by doing semi-structured interviews with eight students who are living on a campus. The

data is analysed through Theory of Planned behaviour and the focal pointsare injunctive, descriptive norms and associations. The result shows thatcampus students consume alcohol because they think it is fun, it helps themsocialize and to avoid or let go of stressful things and negative thoughts. Wecan interpret from the interviews that the drinking norm on campus is thatstudents are expected to drink alcohol at social events. The result also showsthat students tend to value the positive effects of drinking alcohol more thanthe negative consequences. The interviewed students had more mutualpositive associations towards drinking than mutual negative associationswhich implies that drinking norms affects drinking habits and associationstowards drinking.

The Marginal Social Worker: Exploring how Namibian social work students perceive and implement knowledge from a study exchange in Sweden.2013Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (One Year)), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

This study explores how social work approaches and methods developed and practiced in one context can be interpreted, transferred and implemented in another. Additionally it focuses on how cultures and societies are organised both in individualistic and collectivistic societies and its effects on different approaches and conditions for social work. The data was collected from Namibian social work students that have participated in the Linnaeus Palme exchange program, which is an ongoing cooperation between the Swedish University West and University of Namibia. The results show that what the Namibian students foremost learn during their exchange studies in Sweden has to do with client interaction, critical thinking and dimensions of increased self-awareness. The assimilation of knowledge and possibilities to transfer and implement what they have learned in Sweden in a Namibian social work context is understood with the help of the theoretical concepts of the marginal man and transferability of knowledge. Shaped by the Namibian hybrid society, where the respondents are part of an ongoing negotiation between different antipoles and mediation between various cultural contexts, I argue that they are marginal social workers. Through their marginal experience they are in possession of qualities that are crucial in their process of transferability of knowledge and further create conditions for implementing new knowledge in the Namibian work practice.

"Det är ju enormt viktigt att finnas och inte lämna.”: En kvalitativ studie om gräsrotsbyråkraternas strategier för att motverka boendesegregationen2023Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how officials on a municipal level work to counteract residential segregation, to contribute with knowledge regarding which opportunities and obstacles the municipality's officials face. The selected municipality has four vulnerable areas, characterized by socioeconomic and ethnic residential segregation. Qualitative research methods were chosen as a data collection since much previous research on segregated acres have been quantitative. The study was based on semi-structured interviews with eight officials who work with residential segregation. A qualitative content analysis was used based on a coding scheme as a result of systematically explaining the content of the empirical evidence. The analysis was based on previous research and Lipsky's theory of street-level bureaucracy, specifically within the perspectives about discretion and the strategies to increase discretion. As a conclusion the four main teams that can be found in the results are: municipality Omega's work to counter residential segregation, the municipality's strategies during the work to counter residential segregation and the officials' description of both the opportunities and the obstacles they have faced in the work. Within these four teams we can find important key points such as segregation patterns and background in the municipality Omega's work to counteract residential segregation. The important key points in strategies were area based interventions, establishing meeting places, and early intervention towards children. In opportunities, the key points were improved information transmission between the municipality and citizens, improved cooperation and the authorities' presence in priority areas. In obstacles the key points were high due to relocation of residents in the priority areas, the influence of the media on the vulnerable area's image in the social debate, lack of time and lack of resources for officials during the work to counteract residential segregation.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to create an understanding of how unit managers and care workers work with user influence in connection with elderly moving to nursing homes. This study was delimited to analyze two nursing homes in a medium-sized municipality in southern Sweden. The study was based on qualitative semi-structured interviews from two unit managers and six care workers in nursing homes. To analyze the data, Michael Foucault’s theory about power, Pierre Bourdieus's concept of doxa and symbolic power have been used as well as client construction. The result of this study indicates that elderly are given the opportunity to influence through implementation plans, welcome talks, being listened to, relationship-building, feeling homelike, resignation and reluctance, adaption to the conditions that are available and rethinking. The results of the study also shows that elderly were transformed and adapted according to the nursing homes guidelines and routines when moving in. Therefore, there were opinions taken for granted and not questioned within the organizations. With this basis, situations that caused limited influence of the elderly were excused and justified according to the organizations´ implied logic, which was deeply rooted in the workplace structure including the unit managers and care workers.

Dialogue in a learning process: problematization of gender equality in higher education2017Inngår i: Reflective Practice, ISSN 1462-3943, E-ISSN 1470-1103, Vol. 18, nr 4, s. 474-495Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The overall aim with the study was to describe the knowledge building that was developed in a group of students who were trained nurses enrolled in a Swedish higher education programme. With a point of departure in an interactive research approach, the authors applied the dialogue seminar as method and pedagogical model. When the students in close to practice talks, shared their thoughts about how gender and gender equality could be experienced and understood, the dialogue seminar became useable. At the analysis of the stories which the students shared at the dialogue seminars, it became clear that most of the students had an ambivalent approach to gender equality. When they reflected on gender relations, they brought out the hierarchical and separate gender relations which they experienced as existing within healthcare. Furthermore, their professional lives seemed to be embedded in gender-related practices. An important conclusion is that the students’ reflections oscillated between critical reflection on conditions and critical reflection on processes within their own practice in healthcare. Another finding was that the students’ reflections in dialogue form became important in a learning process, not least in the light of that gender relations and gender equality only to a limited degree had been included in their nurse’s education at the basic level.

Kommunala chefers kommunikation via digitala verktyg: betydelse för arbetssituation och chefskap2018Inngår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv, ISSN 1400-9692, E-ISSN 2002-343X, Vol. 24, nr 3-4, s. 26-41Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [sv]

The emotion work of nurses in a person-centred care model2019Inngår i: International Journal of Work Organisation and Emotion, ISSN 1740-8938, E-ISSN 1740-8946, Vol. 10, nr 1, s. 28-49Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

With the departure in emotion sociology and caring science the aim of this article is to elucidate the emotion work as experienced by a group of nurses who tried out a customised form of a person-centred care model. Ten semi-structured interviews with following go-along were conducted. The most important empirical finding is the identifying of emotional caring as a specific part of the nurses' emotion management, comprising such knowledge that is specific to the competence of nurses. Emotional caring thus forms part of caring science, affected by the organisational structure, with bearing on the nurses' room for caring actions, that is, how, when and in what way emotional caring can be carried out. Moreover, in practice, person-centredness was compatible with the commonly shared values in caring science. The empirical material also shows that emotion management can be tied to profession, positions, status and power. The article contributes with an understanding of how working in a person-centred care model made it possible for the nurses to come closer to the patient's life world. Qualitative descriptions of the emotion management of a group of nurses in a certain caring context constitute another contribution, something that has not been investigated before.

The managerial position in a Swedish municipal organization: possibilities and limitations2018Inngår i: Economic and Industrial Democracy, ISSN 0143-831X, E-ISSN 1461-7099, Vol. 39, nr 3, s. 500-535Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this article is to explore how a group of managers construct their reality, more specifically what it means to work as a manager in a municipal organization. The empirical data for the study were obtained from a Swedish medium-sized municipality and the study takes as its research approach grounded theory, as developed by Glaser and Strauss. Consequently, the empirical data formed the basis for the research, which takes a multi-methodical and theory-generating approach. The methods used in the study include the use of a questionnaire study, interviews in focus groups, observations, reflective work diaries, and the creation of feedback sessions. The result shows that the managers work in an organization where conflicting and competing value systems act together. These can be interpreted as environmental factors and external bounds on a structural societal level, which cannot be influenced. A point of analysis is that these factors and external bounds to a high degree permeate the manager’s workday and can therefore be seen as a plausible explanation for the boundless nature of the managerial task. For most of the managers of the study, this was expressed as uncertainty as to how to define and interpret goals and as to what the managerial role includes with regard to areas of responsibility. It is interesting to ask, however, whether these conditions are not characteristic of the role of managers and work life in general. The results also show that the substantive theory of the study was not judged to be valid for the municipal companies. These managers do not express as ambivalent an approach to competing value systems as the managers in other sections of the municipality do. Nor do they appear to question their professional knowledge, the work content or managership. Another empirical important finding is that the managers believe that the organizational conditions limit ability to carry out the manager task, but that, despite this, they indicate, paradoxically, that they like their work and the social work environment.

    Abstract [sv]

The aim of this study was to examine how work integration social enterprise (WISE) established their enterprises. To reach the aim we collected data through qualitative in-terviews from six persons with experience of starting a WISE. Four managers, one exec-utive and one consultant. The research focused on their experience of the enterprises’ start up periods. The research shows that the enterprise is searching for legitimacy from its surrounding but in different ways depending who they are interacting with. The research presented in this study also shows four different factors important to WISE in the estab-lishment process; relations, needs, personal resources and the story about WISE.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This study examines the working role of active social workers in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in Sweden. The aim is to understand how they consider their work role to be affected by the medical domain in which they work. By interviewing eight active social workers in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry the three questions we aimed to answer were: How do social workers at Child and Adolescent Psychiatry perceive their work role? What experiences do social workers have of practicing their profession in a medically dominated workplace? How can these experiences be understood in relation to the sociologists' perceptions of their work role? In our analysis we used the theories of discretion, professional boundary work and the two power concepts power/knowledge and legit power. The results show that there are factors that affect the social worker's work role at individual, organizational and societal levels. The conclusion is that the social workers generally have a subordinate role whilst at the same time express a feeling of development while working with different professions. The social workers feel as if they have a holistic perspective unlike the other medical professions.

IMMIGRANTS’ INTEGRATION IN SWEDEN: Swedish young adults’ perceptions and attitudes2014Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 20 poäng / 30 hpOppgave
    Abstract [en]

Background: Integration of immigrants is an interactive process of learning a new culture, an obtaining of rights, access to a position and status and building of personal relations between migrants and the receiving society.  Their ability to reciprocally adjust to intercultural encounters is one of the most important factors of successful integration.

Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate Swedish young adults perception and attitudes towards immigrants and immigrants’ integration into the Swedish society. Furthermore the aim is to study their perception of social interaction of immigrants and the Swedish host society. How Swedish young adults perceive their country’s immigration policy.

Method:  A qualitative research, using an online open-ended questionnaire and in-depth telephone interviews were applied to collect the data about Swedish young adults perceptions and attitudes. The transcribed data were subjected to thematic analysis.

Result:  The results of the qualitative research helped to understand Swedish young adults perceptions and attitudes. The findings showed that two of the biggest reasons that Swedish young adults support immigration are: humanitarism and labor force. Swedish young adults are very aware of immigrants’ integration in Sweden. They socialize with immigrants and have contact with them in daily basis. Swedish young adults, have a negative opinion regarding Sweden’s immigration policy

Conclusion: Swedish young adults define immigrants as a people born in one country but move to another (particularly in Sweden) with an intention to reside there permanently. Regarding their acculturation expectations, they support integration as the best acculturation strategy. They think that immigrants in Sweden are “half way” integrated, geographically segregated, discriminated, prejudiced in different degrees and immigrant woman are the most excluded category.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to increase understanding of how older Syrian migrants experience aging in Sweden as well as their perspective on needs related to aging and how these needs can be met. The empirical base of the study was eight semi-structured qualitative interviews. In addition, theories about Maslow's hierarchy of needs and social support were applied to the study to enable a further analysis of our respondents' perspectives on aging, perspectives on Swedish elderly care and perspectives on relative support. The result of the study shows that our respondents feel that it is difficult to see how their needs as elderly people can be met. They live in a country with a different language and culture without having any knowledge about the new country. They also believe that the responsibility lies mainly on their relatives instead of searching for help or support from the public elderly care, because they think that the help offered by the elderly care is not prepared to their individual needs. The study concluded that our respondents think that aging in a foreign country does not give the same feeling as aging in their home country. Learning a new language is certainly not easy for them. It is also not easy for them to live in a new society with its norms, culture, and tradition. All of our respondents are dependent on their adult children and need help with various things. This help that children provide for their elderly parents is an obligation in their culture.

The co-design of an online support programme with and for informal carers of people with heart failure: A methodological paper2023Inngår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing, ISSN 0962-1067, E-ISSN 1365-2702, Vol. 32, nr 19-20, s. 7589-7604Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Abstract AimTo describe the co-designing process of an online support programme with and for informal carers of people with heart failure.DesignA co-design process built on core concepts and ideas embedded in co-design methodology.Data sources Our co-design process included three phases involving 32 informal caregivers and 25 content creators; (1) Identification of topics and content through literature searches, focus group interviews and user group sessions; (2) Development of the online support programme and; (3) Refinement and finalization which included testing a paper prototype followed by testing the online version and testing and approval of the final version of the support programme.Outcomes The co-design process resulted in a support programme consisting of 15 different modules relevant to informal carers, delivered on a National Health Portal. Conclusion Co-design is an explorative process where researchers need to balance a range of potentially conflicting factors and to ensure that the end users are genuinely included in the process.Relevance to clinical practice Emphasizing equal involvement of end users (e.g. carers or patients) in the design and development of healthcare interventions aligns with contemporary ideas of person-centred care and provides a valuable learning opportunity for those involved. Furthermore, a co-designed online support programme has the capacity to be both accessible and meet end users' information and support needs, thereby optimizing their self-care abilities. Additionally, an online support programme provides the opportunity to address current challenges regarding scarce resources and the lack of healthcare personnel.Reporting methodsConsolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research (COREQ).Patient or public contributionBoth informal carers and content creators were involved in developing the support programme.

Battling parenting: The consequences of secure care interventions on parents2023Inngår i: Child & Family Social Work, ISSN 1356-7500, E-ISSN 1365-2206, Vol. 28, nr 1, s. 108-116Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Secure care in Sweden is the most intrusive child welfare intervention, and children and their family members have restricted contact. For each child in secure care, there are at least twice as many affected family members and parents who must manage the consequences of this institutionalization. Clearly, it is just as important to understand how secure care affects parents as it is to understand how secure care affects children. To address this issue, we conducted in-depth interviews with 11 parents to eight children who had been placed in secure care during their childhood, focusing on the institutional and societal structures that affected these parents and their parenting. With a narrative approach, stories alluding to a metaphor of war are identified. These stories reveal how all parents (but especially single mothers) are affected by their diverse socio-economic positions and the rigid frames of family life presumed by child welfare interventions. In these narratives, parenting emerges as a social practice rather than a skill. Above all, the stories demonstrate a great deal of vulnerability and sensitivity of parenting. The findings raise critical questions about the meaning and overarching consequences of institutional interventions in a family life.

    Abstract [en]

Parents of children with a neuropsychiatric disorder faces a lot of difficulties regarding their role as a parent. The purpose of this study is to gain a better knowledge of the challenges and needs the parents experience due to their child’s disorder. The study was based on theories of stigma and salutogenesis. By analyzing autobiographies with a narrative thematic method, we studied the subject from the parents’ perspective. Earlier studies have found that parents of children with neuropsychiatric disorders faces a variety of challenges but also find ways to cope with the situation. We found two major challenges and a variety of ways in which the parents cope with this. The main difficulties we found was the stigmatization, including both general stigmatization as well as family stigmatization and self-stigmatization, and the lack of time and energy the parents experience. When it comes to handling the everyday life, we identified four key aspects: support, a general life balance, interpersonal traits and understanding and acceptance from others.

The findings indicate that there is a connection between stigmatization and how the everyday life is handled due to stigmatization interfering with all aspects of the parents’ life.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to search and analyze different logics that operators use in the work of helping juvenile delinquents to break their criminal behavior. New institutional theory is used in this study to analyze the results. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews of six professionals in two municipalities which work with juvenile delinquency. There are two questions that we want to address in this study. The first one is what methods the social workers are using in two middle large municipalities to help youth to brake there criminal behavior. The other question is what logics are behind the social workers work so that juvenile delinquency can break their criminal behavior. This study showed that different programs are used by social workers and that the social workers logics are important in choosing what program or treatment they are going to give the young adults so that they can break their criminal behavior. The result also showed that the social workers in two municipalities work with multiple operators such as schools and police to create a network around the youth in difficult situations.

Specialundervisning, identitet och stigma: En kvalitativ studie inriktad på gymnasieelever med specialundervisning gällande deras skolsituation2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 poäng / 15 hpOppgave
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

The main purpose of this study was to investigate how professionals working within the Swedish Church and the City Mission in a municipality in southern Sweden describe their work with individuals in financial crisis, as well as whether and, if so, how they perceive themselves as complementing or replacing the responsibilities of the municipal welfare agency. During the ongoing inflation, prices for essentials such as food, rent, and electricity have increased, placing additional strain on the welfare state and the efforts of social workers to meet the needs of individuals in economic hardship. There is a lack of consensus in the research regarding the role that the Swedish Church and the City Mission should play in social work and the extent to which they provide aid. In times of inflation, the question becomes particularly relevant as civil society actors become more relevant when societal resources are insufficient. To address our research questions, we conducted a qualitative interview study involving eight participants from the Swedish Church and the City Mission. We employed neo-institutional theory to interpret our empirical data. Our study revealed that the Swedish Church and the City Mission in a municipality in southern Sweden emphasize their multifaceted function and flexible approach, enabling them to address various forms of needs among individuals experiencing financial crisis. They described themselves as being able to complement certain aspects of the municipal welfare agency's responsibilities, but their resources were too limited to fully replace these functions. Our study demonstrated that they could provide limited amounts of food, financial resources, and create a sense of community and belonging inside their organization.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to understand how social workers deal with honour-related violence, with special focus on the processing from sheltered housing. Our qualitative interviews with social workers that work with this kind of problems show that there are both obstacles and opportunities in the processing from sheltered housing. On the negative side are the loneliness, the shame and the guilt that the girls may experience when they need to leave their families. The social services can both be an obstacles and an opportunity. When the girls need to create a new life in a new city they have a lot of opportunities and in the same time it is hard to get to know new friends when you don´t know the city or have much money. The culture in Sweden and the Swedish norms are governing in an unproblematic way according to the social workers. They also think the girls need to deal with two different macro systems, the culture that the family comes from and the culture in Sweden. To help the girls in this situation requires much energy, time and labour. The professionals think these girls are dreaming about a normal life, but the girls must learn to protect themselves for the rest of their lives. This means that they never will be able to tell anyone the whole story of their background.

    Abstract [en]

Transition to the labor market after serving a prison sentence can be a complex experience for former offenders. In this qualitative study, we interviewed eight individuals who have served time in prison and either initiated or completed their way back to the labor market. A criminal record resulting from a prison sentence not only impacts the job-seeking process but also subjects individuals to stigmatizing gaze from the society. The societal perspective can lead former offenders to internalize these views. However, seeking support from social contacts and engaging with helping organizations can act as coping strategies, facilitating the reentry process both emotionally and practically. These strategies play a crucial role in empowering individuals to embark on the journey back to the labor market.

    Finding a suitable object for intervention: On community-based violence prevention in Sweden2022Inngår i: Societies, E-ISSN 2075-4698, Vol. 12, nr 3, artikkel-id 75Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In Sweden, local municipalities, working in collaboration with the police, are assigned an important role in community-based crime prevention and the promotion of safer neighbourhoods/cities. The strategies adopted are supposed to be informed by the policies of national advisory bodies, which emphasize surveying the current situation, problem analyses, systematic planning of interventions and evaluation of efforts. This paper reports on a three-year research project that studied local crime prevention/safer community practices in four so-called ‘particularly vulnerable areas’ (PVAs) using meeting observations and stakeholder interviews. The analysis shows that when constructing intervention strategies, the actors involved had to navigate between different organizational logics and found it difficult to demarcate a suitable object for joint efforts. When they were able to find an object to be targeted, such as youth at risk of drug abuse or low-level criminality, they could rely on a collective mindset, but they struggled in situations where a joint effort was not possible, such as when dealing with the risk of aggravated violence or when the operations got close to more organized crime—both elements that form part of the definition of PVAs. This failure may partly be explained by competing logics dominated by idiosyncratic action in line with bureaucratic rules and routines. This finding raises questions about a putative but non-articulated limit to crime prevention and whether a predetermined approach aligns with the prescribed sequence of survey, analysis, intervention planning and evaluation when faced with more brutish violence.

Possible selves. Gang passages, projective imaginations, and self-transformations2024Inngår i: Nordic Social Work Research, ISSN 2156-857X, E-ISSN 2156-8588, Vol. 14, nr 1, s. 136-148Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Belonging to a criminal gang often strongly influences members’ identities, particularly their self-perceptions and social roles. Entering or leaving a gang may challenge members’ understandings of the meaning and structure of their lives and threaten their sense of control. The aim of this study was to explore how members narrate these transitions and whether such stages may be seen as liminal passages. This article draws in particular on the theory of possible selves, which suggests that people change through experiencing their present selves as incomplete versions of their anticipated selves. We analysed data from two qualitative research projects on gang exits using content analysis from interviews with clients and employees in one Swedish exit programme and clients at correctional facilities or probation services. In addition, data consists of interviews with employees from these. The analysis suggests that while gang members narrate entry as a continuation towards understanding themselves and their potential place in the world, leaving the gang implies entry into a liminal terrain with fewer role models and possible projective imaginings of their future selves. Such liminal passages are analytically linked to a need for role models and experienced guides to manifest a way forward and support defectors in the process of leaving. Gang leavers need ‘ceremonial masters’, in this case professionals with experience of exiting processes, to support them in imagining and creating new lives and new selves outside of the gang.

Required alienation?: The monitored self in a health promotion programme in secondary schools of three Swedish municipalities2020Inngår i: Pedagogy, Culture & Society, ISSN 1468-1366, E-ISSN 1747-5104, Vol. 28, nr 3, s. 333-349Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Promotion is an institutionally mediated effort to bolster or redirect a person’s health, strength, and other assets to build resilience. We analyse a Swedish version of the Life in Action promotion programme used in secondary schools in three municipalities. Focusing on types of alienation as framed in the programme, we argue that Life in Action’s treatment of the psyche as an object in need of conscious monitoring, nurturing, and enhancement of qualities such as positive attitude and self-discipline signals the teenage participants’ required alienation. Concluding the article, we discuss how this type of alienation may already be present in participating students, and also how it may be necessary for young people about to enter work-life in the era of late capitalism.

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

User participation within social work has caught more attention in the public sector of Sweden. The aim of this study is to gain understanding of how user participation as taking into consideration in the field of care for the elderly. The study is based on six semi-structured interviews with six social service officers, therefore the study is based on their perspectives and experiences. In order to gain qualitative data, the method of meaning categorization was used, which resulted in three association themes: user participation, limitations, relationships and approach. The results were then analyzed together with previous research, and through Lipskys’ (1980) theory “Street-level bureaucrats”. The results of the study indicate that user participation is complex in practice and therefore the social service officer have to find a way to manage and implement user participation in their work. Also, that there are some factors that affect user participation e.g. guidelines, relatives, users with cognitive impairment and furthermore the social service officer himself.

    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study was to better understand howLSS-officials within several swedish municipalities understand and handles their discretion in regard to children and guardians who has a certain form of physical or mental disability. If or how those LSS-officials shape the services they are responsible for to help the families as a whole with their parental abilities. We will try to illustrate how the LSS-officials reflects upon the guardians ability to care for their children and how they assess the services they are able to provide in relation to those children and guardians needs. We have used qualitative method and semi-structured interviews in the study. To help analyze our material we have used Michael Lipsky’s theory about street-level bureaucracy as well as Roine Johansson’s criticism and attempt to refine the theory. Our results showed us that the LSS-officials we interviewed have varying discretion in their work with children and guardians with disabilities due to the swedish law that supports services for disability. Moreover we found that the LSS-officialshad trouble understanding how some available services could function in regards to different forms of disability. We also found that they sought different services such as parental guidance for the parents in their homes to improve the work with the children and guardians.

The aim of this study was to analyse the experiences of social workers in addiction unit have of collaborative work with the children's unit on the issue of children in families with alcohol abuse. The method used in this study was a qualitative method and the empirical material has been collected through semi-structured interviews with five social workers in addiction unit in southern Sweden. The result of this study was analysed by framework three different theories: collaboration theory, system theory and organization theory. The study also builds on previous research that treated the same area. The results of this study show that more knowledge about collaborative work is needed. It also appears that there are various factors that hamper the collaborative effort between addiction unit and the children's unit regarding children of alcohol-abusing parents. This concerns for example, perspective differences, legislation and its constraints as well as budget and funding of joint efforts.

    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to explore and understand school counselors' experiences and work methods towards students in elementary school who identify as LGBTQI and experience vulnerability as a result of this. LGBTQI-youth are described by the Swedish government as particularly vulnerable in schools because of their LGBTQI-identity. Previous international research confirms that LGBTQI-students experience vulnerability, which affects them in their health, wellbeing and school experience. However the context in Sweden is quite unexplored, which implicates a research problem. A qualitative method was used to answer these questions by conducting eight digital semi-structured interviews with school counselors from different municipalities in Sweden. These interviewees were contacted by gathering their email addresses from school websites. Two theories were implemented in order to understand the empirical data, which include queertheory and the critical theory. Both of which are part of a social constructionist theory approach. The results of this study shows that Swedish school counselors have different opinions on the targeted group’s vulnerability and the possibilities, conditions and obstacles of their work. Therefore they also work in different ways. Still there is a consensus that this is an important issue that all schools should prioritize and that the responsibility does not lie solely on school counselors. These results are important because they shine light on the Swedish context and inspire further research.
