”Fiona slår med en trumpinne och Rebecca sjunger kanske i mikrofonen”: Intersektionella perspektiv på språket i musikrecensioner2014Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

Det verkningsfulla språket: Bidrag i frågan om Maurice Merleau-Pontys retoriska relevans2020Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The following essay seeks to explore Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of expression in order to tease out a perspective on language and communication that might be of interest for contemporary rhetoric. The point of departure is located in Merleau-Ponty’s claim that language (in the way we use it) is inherently meaningful and a privileged aspect of the human being-in and orientation-towards the world. Furthermore, »what we do with words« cannot be reduced to the implementation of already constituted sets of meaningful expressions, ready-at-hand ideas or the obvious assembling of unambiguous words, but must, according to Merleau-Ponty, be acknowledged as a response to a particular horizon of possibilities within which the speaker finds herself. By employing the already established language at hand she is able to conjure a meaningful expression as a response to the (rhetorical, if you will) situation, with more or less creative astuteness. Consequently the speaker always already finds herself within a denominated world, a cultural-historically structured context – i.e. within »the nameable and the sayable« – yet this world bears within it an ever present possibility of renegotiation, and the as of yet unforesayable. To speak then, according to Merleau-Ponty, is to form an expression between the lines of repetition and invention. Or in his own words: »the operative Word is the obscure region whence comes the instituted light«.

Drawing most importantly from Merleau-Ponty’s distinction between »speaking« speech (parole parlante) and »spoken« or empirical speech (parole parlée), I approach some rhetorical notions of both classic and modern kind. I argue that the creative dimension Merleau-Ponty ascribes to our linguistic abilities, offers interesting perspectives on both Doxa and Topoi, as well as it problematizes the classical distinction between Inventio and Elocutio, and that the gestural dimension of expression that Merleau-Ponty is recurringly talking about can be read as an elaboration on Actio. From a more modern rhetorical perspective I argue that Merleau-Ponty’s philosophy of expression, and its modes of (or interplay between) institution and conquest, may offer a fruitful ground for understanding the creation and sedimentation of social meaning, taken in a broader sense. Lastly, if we wish to follow Merleau-Ponty’s account of how language is a fundamental part of the way in which we inhabit our world, rhetoric must recognize not only persuasion (in a shallow sense of the word), but the deep reaching, existentially (and culturally) transformative dimensions that are at play in our creating, exchanging and appropriation of meaning – linguistic or otherwise.

    Abstract [en]

This study discusses the tradition of ideal ageing, which emphasizes life-long virtue as an avenue to wisdom. In line with this tradition the senior members of society have been expected to take charge of and to organize their withdrawal from their social engagements, make themselves available to the younger generations needs without (openly) wanting to control them, and impart traditions without insisting that everything remain unchanged. Women have not been excluded from this tradition, but they have figured more in the margin. This is especially noticeable in the popular image of the ideal ageing man as a king in command of himself (but only in exceptional cases also in command of others).

The tradition of ideal ageing emerged during antiquity. Socrates held a central position in the formation of this set of values, Cicero’s De Senectute is a prototype of positive examples of ideal ageing, and Seneca’s texts on old age became, at the time, a model for how deterrent examples function as warnings to others. Traces of this tradition can, for example, be found in Shakespeare’s King Lear, and in texts by and about the ageing Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

In the beginning of the 19th century, the tradition of ideal ageing in Swedish literature dominated the portrayals of the relationship between young and old, especially in texts by Esaias Tegnér, Erik Gustaf Geijer, and Fredrika Bremer, who all wrote at a time when a new national ideology was emerging. Some of these writers though did attempt to break with the tradition by portraying themselves in old age as passionate and perpetually young. This shows the importance of studying how individual writers, instead of regarding the tradition of ideal ageing only as a limiting norm or discourse, have used the tradition in accordance with their own interests and perspectives.

”Og dog havde Barnets Død medført en stor Forandring i hans Moders Liv”: Mor-son-relationer i Alfhild Agrells Räddad (1882) och Adda Ravnkildes Judith Fürste (1884)2023Independent thesis Advanced level (degree of Master (Two Years)), 30 credits / 45 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

This thesis is a study of motherhood in Afhild Agrell’s play Räddad (first performed in 1882 at The Royal Theater in Stockholm) and Adda Ravnkilde posthumously published novel Judith Fürste (1884) with a focus on the relationship between mother and son. I study how the mothers wish to raise their sons, how mother and son interact with one another, the family dynamic’s influence on their motherhood and finally how they shape their identity as mothers when their motherhood is first threatened (often by their husbands) and then after the death of their sons. By analyzing two works by women authors of the Modern Breakthrough, I examine how motherhood is represented in literature from this period with a unique focus—mothers of sons. During this period, despite advancements in the rights of women including equal inheritance and increased access to education and professions such as teacher, doctor and dentist, many of the rights gained pertained to unmarried women—how an unmarried woman was to support herself was a central question. Literature from this period illustrates the struggles that woman faced upon marriage—often they had to give up their desire to work and focus on being wives and mothers instead. However, in the two works I have selected, the main female characters’ motherhood is threatened. Motherhood is a crucial part of both mothers’ identity and Agrell’s play and Ravnkilde’s novel follow the shaping of the main characters’ identity as mothers, the following threat to this identity and the crisis that arises after the death of their sons. I analyze this identity-arc and how being mothers to sons shapes and complicates this arc.

Manskampen: En undersökning av maskulinitetens konstruktion i Karl Ove Knausgårds Min Kamp2013Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [sv]

    Abstract [en]

This thesis examines the writings of Kerstin Ekman and focuses on twelve of her works. The first is her debut novel 30 meter mord (1959), a detective novel, and the last Knivkastarens kvinna, an epic-lyric story in verse, published in 1990 though written 1984. The works of Kerstin Ekman are of great significance in many respects: one is their concentration on the development of modern society and the place of women in it. At the same time a dark vein of violence can be discerned running through all her writing from the start. The persistent nature of this violence and the field of tension between that motif and the theme of female vulnerability and strength contain psychoanalytical processes from which a subject in process can be analysed, the main aim of this thesis.

The basis of my analysis is both Kristeva’s theory of “sujet en procès”, as presented in Pouvoirs de l’horreur, Histoires d’amour and Soleil noir, and her theories of literature and metaphor. In the early development of the subject Kristeva distinguishes three significant registers: abjection, narcissism and melancholia. Abjection is our most primitive attempt to separate ourselves from the mother by rejecting her, while narcissism is a concept of idealisation of an imaginary father. The idealisation and identification with this father works with abjection towards the essential break from the mother symbiosis. If this break is not fully carried through, the ego can be trapped in melancholia, but abjection and idealisation can be repeated and later carried through in other ways by sublimation in artistic form and poetical language. The literary text, seen in this perspective, is the trace of a renewed subject process.

“The empty room” is shown to be an important recurrent metaphor in the written oeuvre. This metaphor is analysed as a trace of a lingering mother symbiosis, also shown by the fact that abjection and melancholia are expressed in the texts. Gradually melancholia becomes more prominent along with the appearance of masochism. A fundamental change in the subject process is discerned in Knivkastarens kvinna, where a break from mother symbiosis can be analysed. The violence running through the œuvre concerns this need for matricide, first performed in Knivkastarens kvinna.

    A beginner's guide to Swedish academia2022Book (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

As new to the Swedish research system, one is faced with a series of questions, about what applies to qualifications, what the networks look like, but also practical issues. To make things easier, YAS has developed a guide for international researchers, to help navigate Swedish academia and remove time-consuming obstacles.

Exploring the animal turn: Human-animal relations in science, society and culture2014Collection (editor) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

Animals' omnipresence in human society makes them both close to and ye tremarkably distant from humans. Human and animal lives have always been entangled, but the way we see and practice the relationships between humans and animals - as close, intertwined, or clearly separate - varies from time to time and between cultures, societies, and even situations. By putting these complex relationships in focus, this anthology investigates the ways in which human society deals with its co-existence with animals. The volume was produced within the frame of the interdisciplinary "Animal Turn"-research group which during eight months in 2013-2014 was hosted by the Pufendorf Institute for Advanced Studies, Lund university, Sweden. Along with invited scholars and artists, members of this group contribute with different perspectives on the complexities and critical issues evoked when the human-animal relationship is in focus.

The anthology covers a wide range of topics: From discussions on new disciplinary paths and theoretical perspectives, empirical case-studies, and artistic work, towards more explicitly critical approaches to issues of animal welfare. Phenomena such as vegan sexuality, anthropomorphism, wildlife crimes, and the death of honey-bees are being discussed. How we gain knowledge of other species and creatures is one important issue in focus. What does, for example, the notion of wonderment play in this production of knowledge? How were species classified in pre-Christian Europe? How is the relationship between domesticated and farmed animals and humans practiced and understood? How is it portrayed in literature, or in contemporary social media? Many animals are key actors in these discussions, such as dogs, cows, bees, horses, pigeons, the brown bear, just to mention a few, as well as some creatures more difficult to classify as either humans or animals. All of these play a part in the questions that is at the core of the investigations carried out in this volume: How to produce knowledge that creates possibilities for an ethically and environmentally sustainable future.

The Nothing That Is: The Structure of Consciousness in the Poetry of Wallace Stevens2006Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

This is a study of the poetry of the American writer Wallace Stevens (1879-1955). Stevens’ poetry is often concerned with the relation between consciousness and world, the perceiver and the perceived. This dissertation takes the investigation of the very “structure” or “pattern” of consciousness as its main purpose. Influenced by the theoretical implications of thematic criticism, this dissertation regards Stevens’ collected works as a unified whole or as an imaginary universe in which the manifestation of consciousness and world is connected to the poetic utterance itself. In short, Stevens’ oeuvre provides a poetic world in which a cogito is inscribed, a cogito which offers itself to be manifested through the interpretative act as an independent ontological category. This cogito is upheld and ordered by a specific thematic structure which permeates Stevens’ entire imaginary universe. It is the fundamental aim of this dissertation to convey this thematic pattern, a pattern that is divided in three distinct yet closely interrelated aesthetic categories: the descent, nothingness, and the ascent. Supported by phenomenology and existentialism in general, and the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre in particular, this study offers “thematic close readings” of representative poems which all are argued to convey this thematic pattern in their own individual way.

Chapter I offers a survey of Stevens criticism and it ends with a discussion of the theoretical and methodological perspective of the present investigation. Chapter II, III, and IV correspond respectively to the three thematic divisions, and the study is brought to a closure in a Postscript that is framed by the poem “Notes Toward a Supreme Fiction.” Each chapter is in large chronologically arranged and attempts to show how each individual theme is manifested throughout Stevens’ oeuvre, and also in what way the different parts of the general thematic pattern interrelate.

    Abstract [en]

    Abstract

Autobiographies by politicians are growing as a genre in Sweden and since 1991 female politicians have gradually become active writers in the genre. This thesis is concerned with the effect of gender on how autobiographies by politicians are being received in editorials and reviews in Swedish daily press. By using theories by Judith Butler, Paulina de los Reyes, Raewyn Connell and John Chr. Jørgensen both a quantitative and a qualitative study are carried out.

Based on an analysis of editorials and reviews of all political autobiographies published 1991–2013, I find that male politicians get both a higher number of and longer editorials and reviews than female politicians. This difference is growing over time.

In addition to the quantitative study, the thesis also provides an intensive study of editorials and reviews from six selected autobiographies. The specific focus in this part is how questions of gender and gender-equality are treated; how and to what extent the background and personal life of the writing politician are described and if the autobiography is valued based on literary values and/or the reviewers personal opinions. I find that gender does have an impact on all these subjects and that it intersects with mainly class concerning the background and personal life of the politician.

    Abstract [en]

The Swedish TV-programme „Allsång på Skansen” has been very popular throughout the years and has established a special connection to its public. This paper analyses how the programme has changed through decades but it also aims to analyse the changes in the programme’s structure and how the programme has adapt to this new media landscape. Moreover, the paper analyses the songbooks (“allsångshäften”), and its selection of songs. This paper tries as well to answer the question on how the meaning of Scandinavian ballads (“visor”) has changed. To answer these questions five different seasons of the programme from five different decades have been chosen and compared with one another.

The result has shown that the amount of ballads has decreased and more time is spared on guest artists and their performances. The structure of the show has not changed drastically but it is more like a concert nowadays. The programme is also more interactive to engage and make programme more available to young viewers but, as the viewing figures shows, it is still mainly watched by the elderly and middle-aged people. Furthermore, as analysis of the songbooks has shown, there is a ten-year shift in the selection of the songs.

Rött eller grönt?: flicka blir kvinna och pojke blir man i B. Wahlströms ungdomsböcker 1914-19442001Doctoral thesis, monograph (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

One of the most widely diffused series of girls' and boys' popular stories in Sweden during the 20th century is "B. Wahlströms ungdomsböcker". Its most distinctive feature is the binding with red or green spines, red on books intended for girls and green for boys. The series is a token of the constitution of gender and reflects the notion of gender differences in our culture. This is not only due to the books' visible gender markings, but also to the content of the stories. The purpose is to demonstrate the interplay between stability and change in the stories, representation of gender. Literary tradition, didactic tradition, bourgeois culture and contemporary society influence the stories. This study examines the stories published in the series from 1914 to 1944.

The terms used in the analysis originate from social psychology, narratology and gender theory. The textual analyses of the stories focus on the narrative progression of the protagonist, the protagonists' development from childhood to adulthood and the presented ideals of femininity and masculinity. One important conclusion is that age and gender affects girls' stories and boys' stories in different ways.

The youngest girl protagonists deal with problems concerning the survival of the family. The teenage girls are confronted with ideals of femininity and learn to fully internalise the gender norms. All the girl protagonists are caught up in a heterosexual career, moving towards its fulfilment in motherhood.

The boy protagonists step into homosocial spheres and strive for the ideal of the hegemonic masculinity: a grown, white man and a leader of other men and women. The masculine ideal is the adventure man, making his own way. But the dutiful citizen is also seen in recognisable characteristics such as honesty, rationality and loyalty.

Both girls' stories and boys' stories respond to the image of the bourgeois family, with different gender performances for men and women.

    Abstract [en]

The following master’s thesis consists of an analysis of the narrative positions in the novel The Faculty of Dreams of Sara Stridsberg, a literary fantasy written about the life of the writer and radical feminist Valerie Solanas. Through my thesis I argue that the implicit author, the narratological position of the narrator, and the character called “The Narrator”, all three belong to, and constitute, the fictional character Valerie.

In order to conduct this analysis I use narratological theory, with Shlomith Rimmon-Kenan and Mieke Bal as primary theorists, along with theory concerning spatiality and temporality. The analysis is backed up with metafictional theory as well as research into physical and mental reactions caused by trauma, conducted by Bessel van der Kolk.

The analysis is sectioned into four parts, with every part focusing on a specific topic: “The Narrator’s” dialogues with Valerie, the novels five different sections (“Land of Bambi”, “The Oceans”, “The Laboratory Park”, “The Factory” and “Love Valerie”), the presence of the cursive fragments and finally the alphabetical lists which appear at different occasions in the novel.

The novel acts as a reclamation of power as Valerie recovers her stolen voice, giving herself the opportunity of narrating her own life. The fictional character Valerie salvages her autonomy and receives her rectification by rewriting conversations which have taken place in court rooms, psychiatric hospitals and between different people in her life. She is no longer an external spectator of her own life. Instead she is the one in charge. The narratological levels have collapsed. Only Valarie remains.

Vad ska bevisas?: En retorikvetenskaplig analys av matematisk bevisföring i svensk matematikundervisning2021Independent thesis Basic level (degree of Bachelor), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesis
    Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to contribute further to the study of rhetoric in science. The essay will work as additional justification for the significant role rhetoric has in the science field. Starting in the rhetoric of science and everything it has to offer, this essay then concentrates on a specific area of science: mathematics. Specifically mathematics taught in Sweden to students in 9th and 10th grade. With the help of Lloyd F. Bitzers conceptual apparatus and Kim-Erik Berts questions of proof, this work concludes that there has been a shift in the use of proof in mathematics and therefore a shift in the basic scientific view that is taught in school. The proof has lost its convincing role. This both speaks for the important part that rhetoric plays in scientific studies, as well as the shift away from factual proofs as the most convincing.
