Andreas Gryphius’ Sonette: Eine Interpunktionsgeschichte2018In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 90, no Supplement 1, p. 88-113Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Female Writing in Manuscript and Print: Two German Examples from the Cultural and Political Context of Late Seventeenth-Century Sweden - Maria Aurora von Konigsmarck (1662-1728) and Eva Margaretha Frolich (?-1692)2014In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 86, no S1, p. 9-28Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Aurora von Konigsmarck and Eva Margaretha Frolich, two noblewomen of German descent in late seventeenth-century Sweden, were both influenced by currents in contemporary theology and piety. Aurora von Konigsmarck, her sister, and two of their female cousins formed a circle around the Swedish queen Ulrica Eleonora (the elder). Together they wrote strongly emotional religious poetry in German, which is preserved in an exquisite volume in the Uppsala University Library.Eva Margaretha Frolich expected the Swedish king Charles XI to play a central role in the imminent apocalyptic drama and become the ruler of the world. After she had been exiled from Sweden, she propagated for these views in a number of tracts published in Amsterdam. The present article explores some important paratextual features in Nordischer weyrauch', the manuscript collection of religious poetry written in Aurora von Konigsmarck's hand, and in the works by Eva Margaretha Frolich. The discussion shows the importance of paratextual analysis for the interpretation of texts from the literary and intellectual culture of early modern Europe.

Notes Toward an Aesthetics of Violence2013In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 85, no 2, p. 119-132Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

Author's Preface. In trying to think about violence, aesthetics and the relation between the two, I found that I had to start over from the beginning. I had to allow my own preconceptions about violence and aesthetics - borrowed from any of a number of places, respectable (like Freud, Elias and Huizinga) and unrespectable (like my personal experiences of violence, and of Hollywood movies) - to be put into brackets, stored away for use at some other time. I had to submit my thinking to a kind of violence. And as for aesthetics, since I was sure that I was interested, precisely, in the subjective quality of experiencing violence in an artistic or ritualistic form, I had to put aside presumptions of a thesis, a vision of what violence was objectively, or a knowledge of what the artwork was in its objective, material condition. Hence these notes, where Freud, Elias, Huizinga, my personal experience and Hollywood movies all return, but in the condition of hypotheses and observations, from which, someday in the future, I might compose a real aesthetics of violence.

Outlandish Apocalyptics and Creaturely Life in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s ‘My Kinsman, Major Molineux’2016In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 88, p. 47-56Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

This article offers an analysis of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s story ‘My kinsman, Major Molineux’ in terms of Frank Kermode’s characterization of modern apocalypse. In Kermode’s optic, the transformation of apocalyptic narratives in modernity reflects a generalized move towards immanence, making them inherently self-falsificatory. The analysis highlights this double logic (immanence and self-falsification) in Hawthorne’s tale by indicating how it, on the one hand, sets up a series of contrasts between the protagonist Robin and the townspeople he meets during his search for his kinsman Molineux, and, on the other, highlights the self-falsificatory nature of the post-revolutionary social order by showing how it copies the legitimating rituals of the old regime. By drawing attention to this twofold dynamic of separation and self-alienation, the article complicates an established perspective in Hawthorne scholarship that approaches the tale as a parable of the young America. Rather than merely highlighting the transition from a monarchical system of entitlement to a voluntaristic republican order, Hawthorne’s ‘Molineux’ offers an astute reflection on how the symbolism of the former – what Eric Santner refers to as the ‘royal remains’ – survives in the latter.

The Graphic and Grammatical Structure of Written Texts2018In: Studia Neophilologica, ISSN 0039-3274, E-ISSN 1651-2308, Vol. 90, no Supplement 1, p. 24-36Article in journal (Refereed)
    Abstract [en]

From a linguistic perspective, punctuation relates to grammar and semantics as well as to pragmatics and stylistics. In this paper, I will focus on some grammatical aspects of punctuation in contemporary Swedish, or rather: how awareness of punctuation is necessary for understanding the structure of written texts; but also, how the understanding of punctuation requires an awareness of the partly specific conditions of written language. Punctuation defines entities and hierarchies that may or may not correspond to abstract linguistic categories like phrases and clauses. The graphic word and the graphic sentence, for example, are structural units that in actual written texts follow conventions independent from abstract grammar, as they are defined respectively by word-spacing and initial capital plus final period, exclamation mark or question mark. This makes possible an interesting interplay between grammatical and graphic units. The study is based on a qualitative analysis of the punctuation in three contemporary Swedish novels.

    Abstract [en]

Narratives in bilingual, intergenerational conversations offer an important site for examining how age identity is verbally constructed when language comprehension itself is also periodically in focus. This study investigates three conversational extracts of an older speaker (one woman, age 86) and her much younger friends (two women, mid-30s), who speak Swedish and American English. Analyses of the Swedish conversations locate where the older speaker accommodates to her listeners by providing glosses and sufficient details to be able to launch and sustain her narratives, while she simultaneously positions herself as older through themes concerning the distant past. The younger interlocutors nonetheless actively seek to accommodate to the discourse structure established by the older speaker with their responses. The article presents a taxonomy of rhetorical patterns that the elder speaker uses to accentuate the age difference between herself and the younger speakers.

    Abstract [en]

The relationship between perceived nativelikeness and scrutinized nativelikeness is examined in very advanced L2 French and L2 Spanish. First, native speaker judges are asked to evaluate the speech of non-native speakers and native speakers of both languages, determining whether they pass as native speakers. Four non-native participants from each language group are then analyzed in more detail. Interviews with these speakers are analyzed with respect to formulaic language use and morphosyntax. No obvious differences between speakers who pass as native and those who do not are found. Subsequently, the short excerpts used in the evaluations are closely analyzed, in search for other possible differences. It is found that speakers who pass as native speakers use regional variation to a larger extent. It is thus proposed that there is no necessary connection between perceived nativelikeness and scrutinized nativelikeness and that ‘passing as a native speaker’ may be more linked to sociolinguistic competence than linguistic competence
