    Abstract [sv]

The article analyzes how people in late modern society charactarized by de-traditionalization and individualization, use moving images as a cultural resource for the construction of meaningful subjective world views. The article makes use of empirical data to illustrate and theoretically develop perspectives on how the audience uses fiction film in every-day life to elicit self-reflection and how film engagement is interconnected to spectator's creation of self images (Giddens 1991, Axelson 2008, Vaage 2009), but also how cinematic experiences could be a resource for the construction of more profound and long-lasting ideas of being part of a moral community (Brereton 2005, Jerslev 2006, Klinger 2008, Vaage 2009). Some empirical findings support a conclusion that moving images create a transitional space for the human mind helping the individual with an ongoing process ot transforming the self, dealing with who you actually are, and who you want to become (Axelson 2008, Vaage 2009). Other case studies show how the audience experience meaning in watching films, providing insights about meaning in life and general lessons of life value (Oliver & Hartmann 2010).

    Abstract [en]

Narratives about Europeans entering so called premodern cultures have a long tradition, and “tribetv” based on arranged visits from Europeans to “the world’s remotest tribes” has become a growing genre today. In the documentary Tribal Wives, six British women where described as experiencing cultures that had “hardly changed in centuries” and getting one month to reflect over their habits and priorities in life. In search for contrasts between female lives, love and heterosexual contracts the program turn into self-representations based on Eurocentric imaginations. Tribal Wives become a therapeutic journey (set by BBC) aiming to heal modern souls, an adventure to pre-historic land with forgotten truths for the modern woman to bring back to the future.

    Abstract [en]

This article traces overlaps between cultural studies and science studies, suggesting the migration of knowledge and culture as a common theme. Both fields have addressed travelling cultures and shared the idea that transportation also always means transformation. Knowledge and culture are both local and global. The article also indicates how the two fields have understood power and non-elite groups differently. In closing, the article suggests that a future challenge for both fields is to understand the effects of migrating western technoscience to future generations.

    Abstract [en]

The article highlights themes and paradoxes foundin the issue’s articles about everyday academic“savoir-faire”. One paradox concerns the oxymoroniccharacter of the topic: is academic savoirfaireto be seen as hands-on theory or as theoreticalsleights of hand? The second paradox depictsacademic life and routines as intensely individual, even narcissistic, and social and altruistic. A thirdparadox concerns the high prevalence – and evennecessity – of emotions in what are supposed to berational academic practices and environments. These paradoxes can be seen as containing an implicitmoral diagnosis of the current state of affairswithin Swedish academia.

    Abstract [en]

    A Proper Wedding

A proper wedding, according to popular expectations in contemporary Sweden, should be large and carefully planned, and take place in a church. This paper describes how such elaborate weddings can produce mixed feelings among clergy in the Church of Sweden, and how the organisation promotes the idea that a small and simple wedding is a good wedding. Furthermore, the paper shows how the wedding service has been discussed and reformed in the current process of revising the Book of Worship of the Church of Sweden, and finally reflects upon some alternatives when it comes to presenting, performing and perceiving the ritual. The paper can be read as an experiment in thinking about ritual form, but also as a window into current challenges and processes of change in the former state Church of Sweden.

    Abstract [en]

Ingmar Bergman’s name is virtually synonymous with intellectual European films and high culture but lately scholars have been trying to show that Bergman worked in a variety of fields, including popular culture, and that his work often was commercial, popular and more easily accessible than his auteur image would suggest. This article explores some of the soap commercials that Bergman made in the early 1950s, which still remain a little known part of his oeuvre. The focus also lies on the publication of Bergman’s scripts as serial “filmnovels” in the weekly women’s magazine Allers Familjejournal (1959–1967) and on the transformation of the image of Bergman by his popular later works Scenes from a Marriage (1973) and Fanny and Alexander (1982) and through famous images that reappear throughout the spectrum of popular culture, most notably the image of Death from The Seventh Seal (1957).

    Abstract [en]

This article discusses the construction of death in popular media's use of surveillance footage, and more specifically images depicting the time before death occurs. There are many explanations why these kinds of images of death seem to fit the media format: They are assumed to be authentic; they potentially produces a point of identification for spectators; and finally they represent the time before it is all too late – before death occurs. Hence, they paradoxically represent also hope.

    Abstract [en]

From realism to post truth? News, museums and higher education against fake news and fact resistance

Recently, the problem with fake news, fact resistance and the growing digital, global circulation of disinformation have caused debates and worries, and posed a challenge for several institutions of knowledge in society. In this article, we discuss how the news industry, museums and higher education confront the challenges of the ‘post truth’ era. We can see a mobilization by these institutions in Sweden: The news industry has initiated so-called fact checking sites, the major museums create exhibitions about false news and educate youth in digital literacy and many universities have launched initiatives to legitimize scientific knowledge production, thereby safeguarding professional authority. However, these initiatives are faced with dilemmas concerning how concepts of knowledge, truth and facts are negotiated and understood. This article discusses such epistemological issues in general, and focuses in particular on the risk of falling into the trap of so called neorigorism.

    Abstract [en]

The Averted Woman – Subjectivity in Interpretations of Pictures

Having collected seventy-six photographs and paintings of women seen from behind the author is reflecting on the meaning of this motive. Why have the photographers and the painters, mostly men from four centuries, chosen to represent the women by their backs? Are the women just (secretly) observed from behind, or are they actively turning away from the gaze of the onlooker? The author decides for the second interpretation and makes a connection to experiences of averted women in his own childhood and marriages. The conclusive question is: How subjective may a cultural researcher be doing reflexive interpretations?
