    Abstract [en]

One of the most original voices in British post-revolutionary philosophy belongs to the third Earl of Shaftesbury (1671–1713). Rather than supporting the Hobbesian and Lockean idea of modern political society as an artificially formed creation, Shaftesbury perceives society as a beneficial outcome of nature and natural rationality. Shaftesbury’s understanding of natural society is furthermore entwined with aesthetic matters. The aim of the following article is twofold. First, due to the fact that Shaftesbury’s ideas rarely are analysed in any detail by Swedish scholars, it offers an introduction to Shaftesbury’s take on the complex relation between society and poetry to readers of eighteenth-century intellectual history in general, and readers of the history of literature in particular. Second, given that Shaftesbury is frequently regarded as the first modern advocate of aesthetic autonomy, I wish to problematize such an account by showing how Shaftesbury opposes the idea that poetry holds an instrumental value for society, while he simultaneously maintains the inseparability of poetical truth, artistic whole, and political naturalism. As this article shows, the Promethean myth of creativity is central for Shaftesbury’s understanding of the relation between society and poetry.

    Abstract [en]

The need for university reform. The educational commission’s description of the problems in Swedish higher education 1745-1751.

During the so called age of liberty in Sweden (1721-1772), demands were promptly made for concrete applications of the rather elusive idea of 'utility'. One grand expression of these claims was the educational commission appointed in 1745 to investigate whether and in which ways the Swedish educational system, including the universities, should be reformed. Previous studies have primarily focused on analyzing the commission’s reform proposal; its content, potential consequences and the response it received from Uppsala University in particular. The relationship between the commission and the universities has, moreover, almost exclusively been considered as a struggle for influence over Sweden’s higher education. This article focuses instead on the ideas of the commission regarding the need for university reform. The article aims to suggest alternative approaches for subsequent studies, however I wish to also indicate the contours of a more nuanced understanding of the intentions of the commission. The article takes as an analytical starting point the assessment made by the commission that Swedish universities failed in reaching their legitimate goal: to educate students for positions in government offices. As this failure was considered harmful for the country it was believed to be in the state’s interest to regulate the influx of students into higher education as well as the knowledge and qualifications these students should have acquired upon graduation. Previous studies have considered the commission almost exclusively as a manifestation of the principle that universities should contribute to the economic utility or welfare of the country. This article brings to the fore that while the economy was indeed important, additional attention should be given to broader political interests of the commission.

Abstract. The Thymus Controversy. Elis Sandberg and the controversial cancer drug THX in Sweden 1952 – 1989

This article explores the controversy surrounding Swedish veterinary Elis Sandberg and the alternative cancer drug THX from the early 1950’s up until Sandberg’s death in 1989. THX was an extract for injection made from calves’ thymus glands, as Sandberg − contrary to the medical community − was convinced that the thymus gland was an important agent in the body’s defense against cancer. The aim of the article is to outline the key themes and turning points of the conflict, but also to explain how and why it erupted and continued for decades. The controversy is examined in connection to a broad range of contexts, such as conventional medicine, health care policies, medical jurisdiction and political change. Thereby, the article shows how a lack of legislation on pharmaceutical trials, government attempts to delegitimize alternative medicine, a reformed health care system and a group of cancer patients in desperate need of effective treatment, created a cultural and structural space for THX. Further, it is discussed how early attempts at closing the controversy using scientific arguments failed, and later ones created public outcry, resonating with the growing critique of medicine and authorities in general in the 1960’s and 1970’s. Analytically, special attention is paid to the roles and changing meanings assigned to patients during the course of the controversy. It is suggested that the closure of the conflict may, at least in part, have been due to an increasing cultural relevance of patients as advocates for individual choice in medical treatment in the 1980’s.

The time-space of the archive: on the shadow texts of Sara Lidman

As a place for scientific research the archive may be stationary or mobile – or even a virtual site. Alongside its function as a source for empirical study, the archive holds several other crucial qualities which highlight the complexity of all epistemological endeavour, including its metaphorical or symbolical aspects. Thus, ”archive” or ”archival” has been frequently used keywords in recent debate and research, from feminist theory to art theory. Jacques Derrida’s striking metaphor of ”mal d’archive” – archive fever – has been followed by several more or less related thought figures, such as Sara Ahmed’s image of  ”the Unhappy Archives of Feminist Theory” och Ann Cvetkovich’ ”Archive of Feelings” has been most influential.

However, among archives, an author’s archive always holds an exceptional position, located as it is on the treshold between private, personal and public. Remaining objects, imprints of intimate articulations of emotions in diaries and letters are systematized side by side, often in chronological order, with manuscripts, drafts, articles etc. As such, an author’s diary never tells just one story – but shelters the potential of many, written and unwritten; manifest or hidden. In this way an author’s archive can be said to form a ”time-space” of its own, where the material layerings of memories, narrative patterns and lived experiences which both resists and challenges archival ordering principles.

Taking its departure from the archive of Swedish novelist Sara Lidman (1923-2004), the aim of this article is to reflect on the encounter between the researcher and the author in an archival context. The methodological and stylistic approach is experimental, making use of personal diary writing as a means to enfold the tactile and sensual aspects of the ”archival experience”. The article thus wants to argue that archival research must be recognized as an emotional as well as epistemological and intellectual practice.

    Abstract [en]

In the mid-nineteenth century, the ancient notion that genius is a form of insanity suddenly became the topic of intense medical interest. Beginning with the French physician Lélut’s 1836 study of Socrates, Du démon de Socrate, a number of prominent nineteenth century doctors developed theories that sought to explain genius with reference to various medical conditions. The most important and controversial of these theories was Cesare Lombroso’s attempt in L’uomo di genio (1888) to show that genius, just like the innate tendency to commit crime that he claimed to observe in the majority of the criminals, was a form of masked epilepsy. Lombroso’s opponents, in particular the followers of the French Lyon school, developed an alternative theory according to which genius was a higher form of reason and a future, more highly developed form of human appearing in advance. The paper seeks to demonstrate that the medical theories of genius were in fact an important scientific topic in the late nineteenth century. It aims to show that Lombroso’s notion that genius was a positive counterpart to the born criminal, whose intuitive insights can be put to use by science and solve the very problems that the born criminal causes, meant that the theories on genius were in fact an aspect of criminal anthropology that was much more important than the previous research has noted.

    Abstract [en]

Sublime place, subaltern space: Railroad workers and female cooks on the subarctic railroad 1898–1902

The purpose of this article is to articulate the lived experience of the workers who built the Subarctic Railroad 1898–1902. The article explores how worker’s experi- ences relate to conventional histories of the industrialization of the Swedish far north, arguing that said industrialization was not only capitalist, but also colonial. In particular, it examines ideas and practices related to the spatial conditions along the railroad, and the social practices, aesthetic values and nationalist mythologies those conditions inspired. In order to express a counter-narrative to patriarchal-colonial representations of history and to discover previously excluded subject positions, rail- road worker’s accounts have been analyzed through a theoretical and methodological framework informed by feminist postcolonial theory with a focus on space and materiality. The article finds that colonial tropes are frequent in texts produced by elites, but rare in railroad worker’s accounts. Instead, the latter are characterized by the violence that colonial and capitalist practices have in common. For female work- ers, the ambivalence of rural colonial space enabled a certain degree of boundary transgression, yet at the cost of abjection.

    Abstract [en]

This article uses the yearly reports written by Swedish provincial doctors between 1840 and 1900 to discern these doctors’ view of their main patient group, the peasantry. It shows that the doctors habitually portrayed the rural population as fatalistic and ignorant. This description appears dubious, however, in the light that the peasantry was said to be ignorant due to their practice of hiring quacks to treat disease, and fatalistic since they did not care to treat disease at all. On accounts that a fatalistic population hardly could support extensive quackery, this portrayal of the peasantry is partly understood as a strategy with beneficial effects for the provincial doctor. Four different functions have been discerned. If the peasantry was seen as ignorant and fatalistic, any resistance towards unpopular interventions enforced by the provincial doctor, such as forbidding large funerals for those who died in contagious diseases, could be disregarded. All difficulties the provincial doctor had with establishing the trust of his patients could be understood as struggles against ignorance rather than personal failures. The demands the provincial doctor would make to his superiors in his yearly report for increased funds would seem reasonable in the light of his daunting tasks. And in contrast to the peasantry, the doctor could present himself as a rational and active figure, struggling against difficult conditions in order to bring health and cleanliness to the countryside.

    Abstract [en]

As most historians are well aware, an archive is always founded with the future in mind. Even though most archives do not exist for the historian, they have a bureaucratic function directed towards guaranteeing a "recollection" of a certain institutional organization and societal status quo. However, even the most radical and social constructivist of historians tends to foreclose this obvious notion in her quest for hermeneutical understanding. Through a critical analysis of a quote from the art exhibition "Lost and found. Queering the archive", this article suggests a problematization of the common use and definition of the archive based on a radical (non-)historiography where neither the future, nor history, can serve as legitimate ontologies for research or identity claims.

    Abstract [en]

Chronic carbon monoxide poisoning as a contested disease 1944–1961. By Helena Ekerholm. During World War II, wood gas became the primary fuel for Swedish motorists. Although reliable as an emergency fuel, wood gas caused concern due to its high percentage of carbon monoxide, leading to acute and chronic carbon monoxide poisoning mainly among workers in the transport sector. Chronic carbon monoxide poisoning became an intensely debated diagnosis within the medical community. The article discusses this controversy with specific regard to Thomas Gieryn’s boundary theory and the concept of culture-bound diseases in Sweden primarily associated with Karin Johannisson’s research in the field of the history of medicine. Source material includes medical scientific publications and archive material from a state research centre handling chronic carbon monoxide poisoning. Politically the diagnosis reached high credibility, but within the medical profession the diagnosis and its clinical practice were criticised. Symptoms were diffuse and included general fatigue, headache, vertigo, sleeping problems, apathy and decreased libido. Doctors diagnosing patients with chronic carbon monoxide poisoning had primarily to rely on patients’ own descriptions of their ailments, although some clinical tests were also executed. The first clinic specifically aimed at carbon monoxide poisoning, Sabbatsbergs gengasklinik, received criticism for over-diagnosing. The clinic was accused of creating a wood gas scare in the Stockholm region and causing an epidemic of imagined chronic monoxide poisoning, spurred on by extensive writings in the popular press. The controversy concerned problems of discerning those who were considered to be “objectively ill” from those who through fear had induced chronic carbon monoxide poisoning upon themselves. Notions of working-class masculinity, boundaries between physical and mental illness as well as a clash of interests between the labour movement, national social insurance offices and private enterprise are some of the facets within a complex controversy ultimately focused on drawing boundaries between legitimate and illegitimate patient demands and achieving epistemic authority.

    Abstract [en]

<h1>Neurosis. Patients, diagnoses and therapies in Seventh-day Adventist health care 1935-1985</h1><p> </p><p>The international non-conformist denomination, Seventh-day Adventists (SDA), have since their foundation in North America in 1863, had a distinctive health care model for their members. They have also pursued an extensive international health care system, in line with their Christian mission. In Sweden, SDA were in charge of Hultafors Sanatorium between 1926 and 2002. According to a sample of 164 patient records from 1939-1985, a relatively large amount of the patients throughout the whole period were diagnosed with neurosis of some kind or other mental disorders, often in combination with (other) physical ailments. In many cases, a combination of physical, psychological and social problems, difficult to handle, are displayed in the patient records.  The special treatment offered at Hultafors mainly consisted of diet, hydrotherapy and other physical therapies, combined with a psychotherapeutic approach, positive thinking and an offered Christian pastoral cure for those interested. Some patients were also treated with insulin injections, and from the 1940s onward, more psychopharmacological drugs and in some cases electroshock. Women, especially, were given psychopharmacological drugs without having a diagnosis categorized as a mental disorder. The article discusses how and why these different explicit psychiatric treatment technologies were used in combination in this specific medico-religious context. Among the proposed contributing factors discussed are the Adventist non-dualistic and holistic view of mind-body, their ambition to offer the best and newest treatments possible outside psychiatric institutions and their strong links to American medicine. The development of Swedish public health care and health insurance from the 1950s also influenced patient categories at Hultafors Sanatorium.</p><p><strong></strong> </p><p> </p>

    Abstract [en]

In the fall of 1978 Michel Foucault went to Iran to study the revolutionary movements first handedly. Largely ignoring the scholarly debate regarding whether his observations were accurate, reasonable, embarrassing, critical, naïve, consistent or not, I wish instead to turn the attention of Foucault’s encounter with Iranian protests in a different direction. A closer study of Michel Foucault’s observations in Iran as published in the Italian newspaper Corriere della sera at the time will reveal his strong interest in the media technologies used in the revolutionary struggle. Foucault is particularly keen on tracking the informal infrastructures of cassette tape trading. He reports of an entire communications network based on cassette tapes and players with participants from commercial, religious and other social communities parallel to the government’s broadcasts. According to Foucault in 1978, these grass root technologies will ultimately determine the outcome of the revolution. To be sure, the usages of the cassette tape were no novelty to Michel Foucault. For years, his series of lectures at the Collège de France had been overcrowded not only with listeners but with tape players spinning on his desk by the dozen, like some intellectual counterpart to the bootlegging of rock music performances. In this article, I argue that Foucault did have something explicit to say about the power of media and that it was insightful yet limited in scope. In the process of this argument, I find it necessary not only to ask about the role of small media in political battle but also about the status of the lecture – taped or not – in the body of work of an author. From the vantage point of the compact cassette tape, I try to demonstrate how this technology ended up supporting profoundly different uses among activists and audiences in Paris and Iran in the seventies.
