    Abstract [en]

    Flora, vegetation and land-use history of Greenland are briefly described. The species-poor flora is Arctic. Thirteen endemic taxa may have survived the glacial period on Greenland.

    The latitudinal vegetation zones extend from High Arctic deserts to Low Arctic heaths with erect shrubs. A small area in the SW is Subarctic with elfin forests and meadows. A corresponding altitudinal zonation is also described.

    Greenland was colonised 1000 years ago by both Inuits and Norse settlers. The latter practised animal husbandry in the Subarctic SW. Hay-making was extensive on fertilized and irrigated fields. Extensive deforestation and land degradation took place, until the Norse population disappeared in the 15th century. It is argued that the decreasing population on Iceland during late medieval times made it possible for the Greenlandic Norse to move there. Modern sheep holdings have again caused land degradation. Notes on small-scale forest plantation and on ethnobotany are given.

    The late 19th and early 20th century was a time of intensive geological surveys, carried out in an atmosphere of national romanticism. This period has been described in a recent book by science historian Christer Nordlund, which is here presented and commentd on. Of special interest in Sweden was the issue of posglacial land upheaval and its consequencies for the development of the Baltic Sea. Special emphasis in the book is put on the importance of the geological results for plant geography and archaeology. The two botanists Gunnar Andersson and Rutger Sernander were active in this borderland between botany and geology. As scientists they represented very different mentalities and they soon became enemies. Andersson remained sceptical of the postglacial climate scheme developed by Blytt and Sernander, which he considered founded on too few data. A major scientific schism developed which culminated at the International Geological Congress in Stockholm in 1910. Nordlund is probably right in his view that the interdisciplinary work in the late 19th century relating to historical plant geography and geological development had an impoartant impact on early ecology and its formation as a science.

    Transects covering 90 km inan area south of Linköping in the province of Östergötland, SE Sweden, were relocated and reinventoried in 2013 using the same methodology as in the first national forest inventory of 1927. Data for land-use, forest type and species-specific tree sizes were obtained and compared with values from 1927. The results show that arable fields and pastures have decreased, while forests and areas covered by roads etc. have increased considerably. Picea abies has increased more than Pinus sylvestris. The reasons for the changes are discussed.

    Abstract [en]

    The dinoflagellates constitute a group within the protistan supergroup Alveolata, and can be referred neither to the plant nor the animal kingdom. They swim about using two flagella and are able to orient using various stimuli. About half the living dinoflagellate species are capable of oxygenic photosynthesis, but most of them complement this with capture of prey. Some live ebtirely by capturing small organisms, others are parasites. Some species are able to emit light. The group has a long evolutionary history, and almost as many extinct species as extant ones have been described. Most remarkable is the way the photosynthetically potent dinoflagellates have aquiered their chloroplasts by endosymbiosis with photosynthetic organisms from many different groups. In some cases repeated endosymbiontic events have taken place.

    Abstract [en]

    This article briefly describes the success of the knowledge-transfer reform within medicine known as evidence-based medicine. In this field, the idea is that any decision about an intervention, or lack thereof, should be based on the best available knowledge. The current move towards a similar reform within nature conservation is reviewed, and its differences with medicine discussed. If "evidencebased conservation" is broadly accepted among researchers, practitioners and NGOs, it might lead to a more consistent protocol for reporting case studies trying interventions and, in the long run, a more efficient use of limited resources for conservation.

    Många har engagerat sig för att hjälpa den hårt trängda mosippan, exempelvis genom att bränna eller genom frösådd och plantering. I den här artikeln får vi veta vilka åtgärder som verkar ha fungerat och vilka som fungerat sämre. Författarnas förhoppning är – förutom en ljusare framtid för mosippan – att framtida naturvårds­åtgärder dokumenteras väl, och att vi får se en mer evidensbaserad naturvård växa fram.

    Abstract [en]

    The bay of Lövstabukten is located in northern Uppland, E Sweden. Land uplift is c. 6 mm per year and strongly influences the landscape, giving rise to expanding seashores and the gradual transformation of shallow water bodies into lakes. The various habitats that are formed give rise to a diversified flora. The vegetation is also favoured by the calcareous moraine. We describe the plant communities on the shores and on soft bottoms in the bay. Several notable species have been found of which 13 are redlisted. It is notable that all 9 charophytes that have been found in the Bothnian Sea are present in Lövstabukten. We conclude that because of its high natural values, the Lövstabukten area must be protected.
