    Factors Affecting Ethical Leadership: Final report of Task Group HFM-3042023Report (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    "Factors Affecting Ethical Leadership” shows that the ethical behavior of leaders is the most important factor in shaping an organization’s ethical climate. Representatives from ten countries, Canada, Australia, Czech Republic, Finland, Greece, Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom and United States of America participated in the research, with six (Canada, Australia, Finland, Netherlands, Sweden and the USA) able to collect data. The goals of RTG HFM-304 included identifying the individual, situational, and organizational variables predictive of ethical leadership, developing a model of ethical leadership, and collating best practice in military ethics education amongst NATO and Partner for Peace (PfP) countries. Findings evidence that ethical leadership is strongly associated with values, in particular with value achievement (e.g., setting high standards and striving for excellence) and person-environment fit. Leaders who have the ability to address an ethical dilemma tend also to be those with high standards, a firm foundation in values (such as helping others and generosity) and belief that their institution shares these values. To engender ethical cultures and attract, train and sustain principled leaders, there is a need for military institutions to emphasize values, reinforce ethical decision-making and promote and value-informed ethical leadership from the beginning.

    Abstract [en]

    This thesis examines the abortion debate in Brazil within the context of Catholic and Evangelical belief systems. Using a systematic literature review and thematic content analysis, the primary objective is to illuminate the intersection of religion and the often taboo topic of abortion. Given the widespread poverty in Brazil, abortion becomes a profoundly critical issue that directly impacts the health and safety of women as it affects their ability to access medical care in safe and regulated settings, thereby reducing the risks associated with dangerous and illegal procedures.

    The findings underscore the substantial role played by Catholic and Evangelical belief systems in opposing the legalization of abortion, driven by their deeply held values. This influence is deeply rooted in historical opportunities seized during Brazil's democratization process. Moreover, Catholic, and Evangelical movements have demonstrated remarkable mobilization efforts, engaging in grassroots activities, and fostering mobilization within private spheres. The polarization of the abortion debate has intensified the visibility of these religious groups and mobilized their supporters in various ways.

    In conclusion, this study reveals that Catholic and Evangelical belief systems have emerged as influential political actors, significantly shaping public opinion and resistance to abortion legalization, even in cases where it is legally sanctioned. Given that religion's influence shows no signs of diminishing but rather continues to grow, further research in this context is crucial to understanding its profound impact on society.

    Abstract [en]

    In Argentina, Pentecostalism had a breakthrough in the early 1980s, and today more than 10 per cent of the population are Pentecostals. The revival coincided with a socio-political transformation of Argentinean society. After half a century of dictatorships and Peronism, democracy was restored, and structural changes paved the way for a certain “autonomisation” of politics, law, economy, science and religion. The "new" form of society that developed resembles what in this study is called a Western model, which to a large degree is currently being diffused on a global scale. This work examines the new religious sphere and how Pentecostals relate to society at large, and the political and judicial sphere in particular.

    Social systems theory and an idea of communication as constitutive of social spheres, such as religious, political and judicial ones, form the theoretical foundation for the study. Methods that have been used are fieldwork, interviews and analyses of written material. It is concluded that evangelisation and transformation are of major concern to Pentecostals in contemporary Argentina and that this follows a global trend. Evangelisation has always been important to, even a hallmark of, Pentecostalism. What has become as important is the urge for transformation, of the individual, the family and society. This leads to increased socio-political engagement. However, Pentecostals do not have a “fixed” idea of how society should be organised, i.e., they do not yet have a full-fledged political theology, a public theology or what could be called a Pentecostal ideology. This is mainly because they experience a lack of “compatibility” between the Pentecostal and the political communication. Their approaches to socio-political concerns seem to be based on an understanding of certain “values” as the fundamental building block of society.

    This paper addresses a design exploration focusing on interactive jewellery and wearable computing that could affect sexual harassment in social contexts in everyday life. Drawing on a design inquiry study that lead to the creation of an interactive and digital necklace named Sunshine, which is a personal alarm connected to an emergency center, this paper focuses on how a piece of digital jewellery can contribute to women’s empowerment in relation to sexual harassment. The functionality of Sunshine is based on a device that will be activated when the user presses a button on the necklace and an alert with the location of the user will be sent to an alarm center. The users press the button when in danger or exposed to violence and/or abuse. This study so forth addresses a design exploration of a piece of jewellery that can be seen as a symbol for women’s safety, unity and equality. The combination of digital technology and fashion design demonstrate that people can be brought together and especially be empowering in social contexts where sexual harassment might be a part of women’s everyday life.

    Plato´s Republic is maybe the most widely read philosophical work of all times. It is the earliest surviving, systematic utopia in Europe´s history and continues to inspire people today. But who did Plato want to address with his work and why? In this paper I will discuss these issues. My thesis is that Plato wanted to direct his Republic to people, men and women, who have a good character and love wisdom in order to make them to think radically differently from the traditional norms. If these would-be philosophers could challenge the old-fashioned way of seeing things they could take the lead to establish a just society. I will also discuss critically two alternative approaches from other philosophers.

    Abstract [en]

    This text examines the sovereignty concept in Sayyid Qutb´s final book Milelstones, with a focus on the political and non-political aspects of the concept. The analysis also examines potentially radical and extreme aspects in the concept. The findings show that Qutb´s sovereignty concept is a practical theology focused on what God´s sovereignty means for Muslims in belief and practice. God´s sovereignty is an encompassing concept to Qutb, which means that His exclusive right to sovereignty should permeate through the souls of Muslims and guide their actions in all spheres of life, including in politics. In a concrete form, this means that God´s law and principles should be implemented. Qutb´s sovereignty concept is not extreme, but radical because it challenges established secular orders and the hegemonic assumption in modern discourses that human beings have a right to sovereignty.

    Svenska medborgare har anslutit sig till terrororganisationen Daish. Många av dessa individer kommer från Göteborg. Syftet med denna forskning är att undersöka hur det kom sig att göte-borgare är överrepresenterade bland svenska Daish-medlemmar. Många av Daish-resenärerna har återvänt till Göteborg. I denna forskning undersöks också Göteborg stads strategi för åter-vändande Daish-medlemmar och hur radikaliseringsprocessen ser ut för individer som ansluter sig till våldsbejakande extremism.

    I denna uppsats tillämpade vi kvalitativ metod med semistrukturerade intervjuer. Materialet i uppsatsen grundar sig på intervjuer med två göteborgare som har anslutit sig till Daish och sedan återvänt till Göteborg. Intervjuer har också hållits med tre poliser och två so-cialarbetare som arbetar mot våldsbejakande extremism i Göteborg.

    Resultaten visar att Göteborg sticker ut i listan bland Sveriges särskilt utsatta om-råden, och att orsaken till att Göteborg är överrepresenterat beror på segregation och utanför-skap. Resultaten visar att vissa stadsdelar i Göteborg har hög arbetslöshet, låg utbildning och dåliga skolresultat. Klyftan mellan utsatta områden och övriga Göteborg växer. Invånarna i dessa områden upplever detta som orättvist, diskriminerande samt att det väcker frustration. Undersökningen visar att klyftan utnyttjas av individer med religiös, klan eller patriarkal makt som ersätter den demokratiska strukturen i de segregerade stadsdelarna. Terrororganisationen Daish är en av aktörerna som har utnyttjat övriga samhällets frånvaro i utsatta stadsdelar. In-formanterna påpekar att Daish-rekryterare överöser religiös propaganda på individer som redan är frustrerade på samhället.

    Abstract [en]

    Public debate about Islam and Muslims often focuses on contradictions, conflicts, and contrasting value systems. Since 9/11, the bombings in Madrid and London and the recent rise of ISIS this debate has to a large extent included a fear that Muslim immigrants will be disloyal to their new Western countries, and thus requires increased surveillance and control. Conversely, others argue that Muslim populations in the West have wrongly suffered from the increasing intolerance and suspicion resulting from terrorist acts committed by a small number of radicals. Such voices point to a need to safeguard religious freedom and the right to equal treatment regardless of a group’s ethnic, cultural, linguistic, or religious background. In many European countries, these discussions have directed attention toward places of Islamic education such as Muslim schools, mosques, and Islamic organizations, focusing on the sometimes controversial manner in which they have been depicted in the media, public discourse, and, within Muslim communities themselves (Aslan 2009; Birt 2006). Religious education is both an essential and a challenging objective for minorities since the “transmission” of religious tradition to future generations is crucial to the survival of any religion. In Sweden as elsewhere in Europe many Muslim children and teenagers and even adults attend privately-run, extra-curricular Islamic classes. Some attend Islamic schools or are taught at home. Publically funded Islamic education options provided by the state are an emergent option in several European countries. These classes lie not only at the heart of debates over religious freedom, equal rights to education, and integration, but are also connected to matters of securitization and the state control of Islam. This paper will present an overview of publicly funded, mainly pre-university Islamic education in Sweden, a European Western secular Christian majority country with a Muslim minority population. Firstly, I will establish a definition of Islamic education and a description of the state funding of education and religion in general. Then, the paper will move on to describe different types of Islamic education that are available in Sweden.

    Ethical Issues in the Adoption and Implementation of Vision Zero Policies in Road Safety2023Doctoral thesis, comprehensive summary (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    The aim of this doctoral thesis is to analyze ethical issues in the adoption and implementation of Vision Zero policies. 

    The first article analyses criticisms against Vision Zero goals and measures promoted to reach them. We identify and assess “moral”, “operational”, and “rationality-based” arguments against Vision Zero. In total, thirteen different criticisms are analyzed. 

    The second article seeks to reconcile the two major decision-making principles in road safety work, i.e., Cost Benefit Analysis and Vision Zero, which are often viewed as incompatible. We argue that the two principles can be compatible if the implementation of Vision Zero accepts temporal compromises intended to promote efficient allocation of resources, and the results of Cost Benefit Analysis are viewed not as optimal and satisfactory as long as fatal and serious injuries continue occurring. 

    The third article uses Vision Zero as a normative framework to explore and analyze road safety work in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The ensuing analysis shows that there are significant differences between Addis Ababa road safety policies and Vision Zero in terms of how road safety problems are understood and in their responsibility ascriptions for improving road safety problems. It is argued that enhancing road safety in the city requires promoting a broader view of the causes and remedies of road safety problems. Moreover, given the magnitude and severity of road safety problems in the city, it is vital to emphasize the moral responsibility of actors responsible for the design and operation of the road system, and entities that procure and own large number of vehicles. 

    The fourth article analyses equity and social justice considerations in Vision Zero efforts in New York City (NYC). Moreover, this study seeks to understand and assess how the city accounts for equity and social justice implications of road safety work. The result of the study shows that equity and social justice considerations played important roles in the initial adoption of Vision Zero policy in the city. Nonetheless, the study also shows that the adoption and implementation process gave rise to important equity and social justice issues which are primarily related to the method of prioritization used in road safety work in the city, equity and fairness in the distribution of life saving interventions, the socioeconomic impacts of road safety strategies, and the nature of community engagement in policy design and implementation. The findings of this study, among others, point to a need for Vision Zero practitioners to give due considerations to equity and social justice implications of Vision Zero policies and strategies. 

    The fifth article analyzes the nature and moral acceptability of risk impositions from car driving in a low-income country context. It is shown that car driving involves an unfair and morally problematic risk imposition in which some stakeholders, namely those who decide on the nature of the risk in the road system and benefit the most from car driving, impose a significant risk of harm on others, who neither benefit from the risk imposition nor have decision-making role related to the risks they are exposed to. It is argued that addressing moral problems arising from the unfair risk imposition necessitates the promotion, on the part of beneficiaries and decision makers, of certain types of moral obligations related to the nature and magnitude of road crash risks. Importantly, those who benefit the most from car driving, and actors who decide on the risk level in the road system, have the moral obligation to implement effective risk reducing measures that protect those unfairly risk exposed, obligations to know more about road crash risks, obligations to compensate victims, obligations to communicate with the risk exposed and incorporate their concerns in policy making, and obligations to bring about attitudinal change.

    Road Safety Policy in Addis Ababa: A Vision Zero PerspectiveManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    In this paper, the Addis Ababa city road safety work is examined and analysed based on the Vision Zero approach to road safety. Government policy documents and available research on the state of road safety in the city are explored and assessed in terms of how they compare with Vision Zero, concerning how road safety problems are conceptualized, the responsibility ascriptions promoted, the nature of goal setting with regards to road safety objectives, and the specific road safety interventions promoted. It is concluded that there is a big difference between the Vision Zero approach to road safety and the Addis Ababa road safety approach in terms how road safety problems are framed and how responsibility ascriptions are made. In Addis Ababa, road safety problems are mainly viewed as individual road user problems and, hence, the responsibility for traffic safety extended to other system components such as the vehicle and road design is very limited. It is argued that in order to find and secure long-term solutions for traffic safety in the city, a paradigm shift is needed, both regarding what are perceived to be the main causes of road safety problems in the city and who should be responsible for ensuring that road fatalities and injuries are prevented.

    The Morality of Driving Cars: An Ethical Analysis of Risk ImpositionsManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)
    Abstract [en]

    This paper provides an ethical analysis of risk impositions from car driving in a low-income country context. To this end, a model of ethical risk analysis is used in which stakeholders and their corresponding roles in relation to a risk imposition is used to identify the nature and moral acceptability of risk impositions. I argue that car driving involves a risk imposition in which some stakeholders who decide on and benefit from the risk impositions, impose an unfair risk of harm on other stakeholders who are neither beneficiaries from the risk imposition nor have a decisionmaking role related to the risks they are exposed to. Mainstream ethical theories lack feasible solutions to the moral dilemmas associated with the risk impositions. I argue that addressing the unfair and morally problematic risk impositions requires the promotion certain types of moral obligations associated with the nature and magnitude of the risk impositions. Accordingly, actors who decide on risk level in the road system and, those who benefit from the current risk impositions have the moral obligations to know more about the nature of the risk imposition, to communicate with the unfairly risk exposed, to compensate those who are harmed, and to bring about attitudinal change with regards to the causes and remedies of road safety problems, and to improve safety of those unfairly risk exposed. Most of all, enhancing the safety of children, and pedestrians requires a political and societal commitment to promote effective road safety measures that eliminate major risk factors affecting these groups of road users.

    Abstract [en]

    This licentiate thesis discusses moral issues associated with road safety work, with a particular emphasis on the Vision Zero (VZ) goal and its interventions. The licentiate thesis contains three articles and an introduction that briefly discusses issues and arguments presented in the articles.

    The first article, identifies, systematically categorizes and evaluates arguments against VZ. Moral, operational, and rationality related criticisms against the adoption and implementation of VZ are identified and discussed.

     The second article in this thesis seeks to reconcile the methods of Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) and VZ in road safety decision making. CBA has been and still is a major decision making tool in road transport and traffic safety work. However, proponents of VZ question the use of CBA in road safety and transport decision making on methodological and ethical grounds. In this paper, we locate the philosophical roots of the conflicting views promoted by proponents of CBA and VZ. Then we try to identify ways through which the two methods can be made compatible.

    The third and final paper uses VZ as a normative framework to explore and analyse the Addis Ababa road safety work. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, the paper seeks to examine how road safety problems are actually understood by those responsible for road safety at the local level. To this end, government policy documents, reports and other relevant sources where consulted to identify how road safety problems are framed, who is assigned responsibility for addressing road safety problems and through what interventions. Second, the paper aims to examine road safety work in the city from a normative point of view, i.e., what is the best, or most adequate, way of framing the problem, and who should be given the responsibility for addressing the problem and by what measures. It is argued that enhancing road safety in the city requires adopting a broader view of causes of road safety problems, and emphasizing the responsibility of actors that shape the design and operation of the traffic system and the safety of its components.

    Equity and Social Justice Considerations in Road Safety Work: The Case of Vision Zero in New York CityManuscript (preprint) (Other academic)

    This paper analyses how Vision Zero (VZ) efforts in New York City (NYC) account for equity and social justice implications of road safety work. VZ policy documents, research literature, popular science and opinion articles on road safety work in the city were studied with a prime focus on equity and social justice. Twelve semi-structured interviews with stakeholders involved in road safety and transport planning in the city and at national level were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of policy design, the adoption process, and the role of equity considerations in the city’s road safety work. The results show that major equity and social justice issues arise in the adoption and implementation of VZ. These issues are primarily related to equity and fairness in the distribution of life saving interventions, the socio-economic impacts of road safety strategies, and the nature of community engagement in policy design and implementation. The findings point to a need for VZ practitioners to give due consideration to equity and social justice implications of VZ policies and strategies. Among others, it supports the need for understanding the nature of past equity and social justice problems in road safety and transport planning in the VZ policy design process. Moreover, the findings suggest the need for empirical studies on the socio-economic implications of VZ strategies and interventions.

CBA is an expression of the reasonable principle that the resources available for improving traffic safety should be used as efficiently as possible, and Vision Zero expresses the equally reasonable principle that deaths and serious injuries in road traffic are always unacceptable. The two can be reconciled, if due attention is paid to the fact that Vision Zero accepts temporary compromises, albeit not end-goal compromises, and the efficiency analysis of CBA is disassociated from claims of optimality. We propose two ways to reconcile the two approaches. First, the results of a CBA can be presented not only for the currently used life-value but also for alternative, higher life-values. Secondly, essentially the same information can be presented in the form of cost-effectiveness safety analysis (CESA), which reports the economic costs per life saved. We propose that a CESA should be performed for all road traffic projects, not only those that have safety improvement as their main objective. In this way, an economically informed total overview of the impact of Vision Zero in traffic safety can be obtained.

    Despite Vision Zero’s moral appeal and its expansion throughout the world, it has been criticized on different grounds. This chapter is based on an extensive literature search for criticism of Vision Zero, using the bibliographic databases Philosopher’s Index, Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, and Phil Papers, and by following the references in the collected documents. Even if the primary emphasis was on Vision Zero in road traffic, our search also included documents criticizing Vision Zero policies in other safety areas, such as public health, the construction and mining industries, and workplaces in general. Based on the findings, we identify and systematically characterize and classify the major arguments that have been put forward against Vision Zero. The most important arguments against Vision Zero can be divided into three major categories: moral arguments, arguments concerning the (goalsetting) rationality of Vision Zero, and arguments aimed at the practical implementation of the goals. We also assess the arguments. Of the thirteen identified main arguments, six were found to be useful for a constructive discussion on safety improvements.

    In this essay, Ingeborg Wikander's book Fem år i Kina has been examined through a thematic analysis method. The result showed three distinct categories, each with their own subcategories, which are: Wikander and the women, Wikander’s piety and Wikander, homesickness and national romanticism. When the theoretical framework was applicated onto the study it showed that Wikander generalised and grouped all Chinese women into one category. A category Chandra Talpade Mohanty refers to as “third world woman”, which was a way for Western women to distance themselves from women of another ethnicity, which also can be referred as “othering” a group, creating an Us and Them. Drawing on Malin Gregersen’s reasoning about paternalism and social motherhood, one can see how Wikander took on a nurturing role in the relationships she engaged in while in China. Shirley S. Garrett’s liberation ideology in relation to missionary work is also visible in the letters and works from Wikander.

    This study is about the principle “Responsibility to Protect” and its implementation in several countries. The purpose of this study is to examine why the implementation of “Responsibility to Protect” has been used differently in similar situations. To limit my study I have chosen to examine two countries that have two different results on similar issues. I have chosen to study the conflict/civil war in Libya and Syria. The reason why I have chosen these countries is because these conflicts have similar causes and similar history, but how the international community responded differently and has argued various. This study will also highlight and observe the difficulties that the principle faces. For example the veto right in the united nation security council, and also the principle of sovereignty. At the end of this study I discuss the principle in general, what I think about it and how the principle “Responsibility to Protect” can be improved itself and develop to be more powerful and fulfill its purpose, to Protect civilians from genocide, crime against humanity and towards war crime.

    Abstract [en]

    The main purpose of this study is to make a critical examination of Rudolf Bultmann´s (1884–1976) and Wolfhart Pannenberg´s (b. 1928) interpretations of the resurrection of Jesus. Bultmann is best known for seeking to demythologize the miracles of the New Testament. Pannenberg has gained much attention for arguing that the resurrection of Jesus is an event in chronological history.

    In this thesis I first present Bultmann´s and Pannenberg´s interpretations of the resurrection of Jesus. In order to help the reader understand the context in which these interpretations were made, I give a brief sketch of the German theological setting. Second, I compare the theologies of Bultmann and Pannenberg from the concept of background theory, principles of interpretation, exegetical reasoning, the meaning of the resurrection and what it means to accept the resurrection. Third, I categorize different ways that the resurrection could be interpreted today. Fourth, I critically discuss the way that Bultmann and Pannenberg argue and give some proposals for how their theologies can be developed. Developing the theology of Bultmann I give more attention to chronological history than he does. I also make alterations in the way he understands God´s action. Concerning Pannenberg I discuss the importance of rational arguments in his theology. I argue that the resurrection should be interpreted from the perspective of a faith or an interpretation which seeks understanding.

    The purpose of this Master thesis is to give an account of and review the ideology yhat King presented through his preaching, speeches and other sources. The metod I have chosen for this purpose is to systematize King’s ideology and the to critically analyze it. When doing so I have discoverd that King’s non-violent ideology is coherent, but that his argumentation is somewhat defective, especially when examing its plausibility.                      King’s non-violence ideology was based on a theocentric wordview and a natural law pholosophy. He tought that all men are created in the image of God and that all humans have the possibility to do good. King’s non-violence ideology is based on active resistance where people use love and civil disobedience as tools to enforce subversive changes. King was against all types of violent actions and stated that violence never leads to sustainable change, that violence is immoral and unworthy of any human. King also said that non-violence is the only way to combat societal problems in a long-term perspective.

Rapporten ämnar ävenundersöka vilka faktorer som kan ligga bakom eventuella skillnader i hanteringen. Genom struktureradeintervjuer av 29 olika samfund i Karlstad, ämnas följande frågeställningar besvaras; Hur hanterar deolika samfunden corona-pandemin? Finns det skillnader mellan samfundens hantering av coronapandemin?Vad finns det för skillnader mellan samfundens hantering av corona-pandemin? Samt; Vilkafaktorer orsakar skillnader mellan samfundens hantering av corona-pandemin?Studiens resultat visar att samtliga trossamfund som intervjuats i någon utsträckning har ställt inoch/eller anpassat sin verksamhet för att hantera de begränsningar som den rådande pandemin inneburit.Skillnader mellan trossamfundens hantering av corona-pandemin har synliggjorts på sådant vis att dettydligt visar skillnader kring i vilken utsträckning trossamfunden har stängt ner aktiviteter och offentligasammankomster. Graden av anpassningar och hantering av pandemin grundas på faktorer så somförutsättningar i form av ekonomiska resurser, lokaler och tidigare erfarenheter.

    The aim of this qualitative study is to examine how teachers comprehend and interpret the subject of Religious Studies in Sweden; and how these interpretations manifest themselves practically in their teachings.

    The theoretical framework of the subject Religious Studies can be perceived and interpreted in different ways. This interpretation, as well as its practical implementation, is a process that is largely determined by a teacher’s knowledge of: pedagogical content knowledge, subject matter knowledge and curricular knowledge. The examination is based on eight semi-struc-tured interviews with Religious Studies teachers. Perceptions and methods were explored with each of them, the output of which has been analysed and themed.

    The result of the study clearly demonstrated that the main purpose of Religious Studies teaching was to increase the acceptance and tolerance of its students. It also revealed that due to the breadth and complexity of subject matter, the practical implementation of their teaching approaches varied significantly. Furthermore, its effectiveness is not only influence by the teaching approach itself, but also by individual’s own personal development.

    Denna studie syftar till att undersöka lärares förhållningssätt till begreppet mångfald så som det skrivs fram i ämnesplanen för religionskunskap i LGY11. Fem kvalitativa intervjuer genomfördes med lärare i religionskunskap på gymnasiet. Dessa intervjuer har tolkats med hjälp av en narrativ analysmetod och relaterats dels till olika filosofiska perspektiv, normkritisk pedagogik samt fältet för kontroversiella frågor i undervisning. Resultatet påvisar att det finns såväl likheter som skillnader mellan lärarnas förhållningssätt. En likhet var att många av dem intog ett elevperspektiv i sin undervisning och berättade om hur de anpassar sin undervisning till olika elevgrupper. En skillnad berör hur man uppfattar själva religionsämnet som sådant; vissa av lärarna talade i termer av att motverka fördomar, andra om att ämnet kan bidra till en ökad förståelse hos eleverna själva.

    The aim of this essay is to examine the significance of the concept of sanctification in biblical theological reflection on economics through a comparative textual study. The theologians analyzed are Albino Barrera, Wayne Grudem, and Kathryn Tanner.

    In what way are their biblical and systematic theologies of economics related to their understanding of the concept of sanctification? What is the relationship between sanctification and the Bible’s words on economics? In a broader perspective, the essay aims to reflect on how the concept of sanctification can be viewed and enunciated in the light of a capitalist economic system.

    The theologians used in the essay all have their origins in disparate theological discourses, Christian communities, and academic disciplines. Barrera is a biblical scholar, economist and a priest in the Catholic Church. In Biblical Economic Ethics, Barrera writes an economic theology with an emphasis on social justice. Grudem is a Calvinist Baptist biblical scholar and systematic theologian, active in conservative evangelical theological discourse. In Politics according to the Bible, Grudem presents his biblical theology on politics and society. Tanner is a systematic theologian in the Episcopal Church, active in the disciplines of feminist and constructive theology. In Christianity and the New Spirit of Capitalism, she critiques the economic paradigm she describes as the new spirit of capitalism.

    Barrera, Grudem, and Tanner all make different readings of what the Bible has to say about economic life. Grudem actively endorses the economic system of today, while Barrera and Tanner have a more critical voice. Barrera sees sanctification as a gift of divine friendship from God. Grudem views sanctification as what comes after conversion from sin and the blessings granted by God. Tanner means that sanctification takes place through the work of the Spirit and by Jesus’ gift of a life in holiness.

    Through the essay a connection has been established between a person’s view on sanctification and their biblical theology on economics. Barrera’s, Grudem’s, and Tanner’s biblical theology on economics is closely connected to their understanding of the concept of sanctification. There seems to be a connection between the biblical material that is being analyzed, how it is analyzed, and what is being left out. A central finding in the essay is the connection between the understanding of sanctification as either a gift or a reward.

    År 1998 tillkallades en kommission för att utreda giftskandalen i Hallandsåsen som inträffat ett år tidigare, projektet präglades tidigt av såväl organisatoriska som tekniska motgångar och slutade i en miljöskandal. Kommissionens främsta uppgift blev att kartlägga händelsen och ta fram både orsaker för de inträffade och åtgärder för att det inte skulle kunna ske igen, arbetet resulterade i två statliga utredningar. Mängden tillsatta kommissioner hade ökat stadigt under 1900-talet och stor tillit tillskrevs utredningsväsendet som en arena för samhällsforskning. Denna rapport undersöker hur kommissionens syn på teknik och tekniska misslyckanden uttrycks i de statliga utredningarna om händelserna i Hallandsåsen. Undersökningen belyser hur tekniksyn kan påverka vad som blir samhällsforskning och hur detta i sin tur kan användas som politisk resurs. Statliga utredningar är ett slags gränsland mellan politik och vetenskap och ses ofta som en frizon för kunskapsproduktion. Det blir på så vis högst relevant att undersöka de omständigheter som råder när en statlig utredning blir till, både för att förstå dess roll som gränsorganisation men även för att nyansera bilden av vad en SOU är.

    Abstract [en]

    This paper develops a puzzle about non-merely-verbal disputes. At first sight, it would seem that a dispute over the truth of an utterance is not merely verbal only if there is a proposition that the parties to the dispute take the utterance under dispute to express, which one of the parties accepts and the other rejects. Yet, as I argue, it is extremely rare for ordinary disputes over an utterance’s truth to satisfy this condition, in which case non-merely verbal disputes are extremely rare. After examining various responses to the puzzle, I outline a solution using the framework of truthmaker semantics.

    Abstract [en]

    According to the Kripke-Putnam orthodoxy, a term like 'water' refers to samples of the same substance as the items on the basis of which the term was introduced. However, observations due to Needham (2000) and Leslie (2013) cast doubt on the idea that there is a uniquely privileged notion of substance relevant to the determination of reference, in which case it would seem at best indeterminate what the word `water' refers to. In response to this problem, Gómez-Torrente (2019) has argued that there is a privileged notion of substance that plays a role in the determination of reference, namely, the ordinary notion of substance. This paper argues that Gómez-Torrente's proposal is not successful. Contrary to what Gómez-Torrente supposes, there is no uniquely privileged ordinary notion of substance; rather, there are many notions of substance compatible with the meaning of 'substance' none of which seems privileged over the rest.

    Year 2015, Sweden received approximately 163 000 refugees, whom almost half of were children. To combat these, according to the Swedish state overwhelming numbers, a temporary law was put in place in 2016. The law came to be extended and valid until 19th July 2021. This was a hard hit primarily towards children. 

    The purpose of this thesis is to critically analyze how children rights and human rights are interpreted when judicial judgments are passed within the context of asylum. To conduct this study, the work of inter alia, Louise Danes thesis has been studied, which gives us insight of the jurisprudence and the application of human rights in Swedish public right. Sweden outright implemented the “Convention on the Rights of the Child” into its own laws as is, without skewing or reformulating it in 2020, which is analyzed in this study. This study observes the first judgment made after the installment of this law, within an asylum case, regarding a 14 year old girl. What is also analyzed are documents of policy, from the Swedish Migration Agency regarding their understanding of human rights and application of it. The material in this study is analyzed from an ethical and critical standpoint, based on the thoughts of Ronald Dworkin and Elena Namli. 

    The study shows that the interpretation of human rights and children rights within public right is ambiguous. What has been shed light on based on this study, is that the authority uses certain laws to nullify the principle regarding the best interest of the child. In “hard cases” the state tend to apply laws to justify the compromise of a child’s human rights.

    This study is based on a qualitative content analysis that problematizes views on controversial issues in teaching. The purpose of this study is to analyze the pedagogical strategies proposed by research in the teaching of controversial issues. The qualitative method gives me the opportunity to describe and examine the content of the text. This study is based on eight scientific articles and the information on these articles are not meant to be generalize controversial issues in teaching, since the articles do not represent all researchers' opinions on which strategies are most suitable in a classroom. This study problematizes the articles in relation to terms of prejudice, multiculturalism and diversity. These terms will help to explain why controversial issues occur and why it is important to have an open and inclusive environment in the classroom. The result shows that some teachers, in the research in question, discuss controversial issues from an ethnocentric perspective and conflicts are explained by ethnic diversity. The result also shows that some teachers embrace different strategies to meet the controversial questions that occurs in the classroom. One strategy that the articles highlight is the teacher’s willingness to raise different perspectives for nuancing the image of Islam and Judaism. Another strategy that the articles highlight is to tone down the conflict perspective by highlighting similarities between the Abrahamic religions. Furthermore, the results show that there is a controversial perception among the students in the research that Muslims are portrayed as terrorists, religious fanatics in the media. For this reason, students need to be taught controversial issues to balance the one-sided picture of religions that the media provides, where the teachers uphold an intersectional perspective in their teaching.

    It is not surprising that the massive Syrian and Afghanistan immigration three years ago, has changed their view towards Islam rules in their new identity creating. But what has been changed? That was my first question in this essay and the answers I got was rules concerned alcohol, prayer, mosque visits and food rules. All this rules requires someone to influence them to take a stand, which lead us to the next question, about how hegemony was exhibited as a factor in how my respondents answered the first question. The theory of hegemony was the analysis instrument of this study and gave me a hypothesis that hegemony probably had something to do with the change of rules, and it had. All these things that I mentioned as changed rules in their new land demands a personal asset and to be legitimized by someone who represents the hegemony.  In order for the hegemony to continue it has to be anonymous and lead for example friends or teachers. It is visible how my respondents talked about matters that had to do with how the changes where in their common sense, where probably hegemony has the strongest attachment, but also how they thought that they made own choices, was also the choice that the hegemony had done before them. Although I took into account the need to be a part of a group, here it showed how the Muslims was included in a group that only had premises from hegemony standard points. The answers for my result was given to me by six secondary school students by semi structured interviews.
