The deformation and failure of hard rock: five case studies

Abstract [en]

This report is a compilation of underground cases with observed and documented field data, where rock mass failure has occurred and deformation has been monitored. The cases presented within this report were selected on the basis of the following requirements: - Failure has occurred in the excavation as a result of stress- induced failure, structurally-controlled failure, or a combination of both. - Measurement of deformation has been conducted before and during both the excavation and time of the failure occurrence. The information presented in this report is based on documented information such as papers and articles, formal reports, theses, and communication via email with researchers and consultants. Five cases are presented in five chapters within this report: - Mine-by Experiment - Chapter 2. - Heathrow airport tunnel collapse - Chapter 3. - Instrumented drift at the Kiirunavaara mine - Chapter 4. - Arlandabanan tunnel - Shuttle station 2 - Chapter 5. - Äspö Pillar Stability Experiment - Chapter 6. The first two cases are tunnels from Canada and England and the last three cases are from Sweden.
