Abstract [en]

Title: To prevent fatal overdoses

A mixed-method study on implementation of patientsafetyinterventions to prevent overdosedeaths following discharge from a multidisciplinary specialized treatment center.

Background: Overdose fatalities or drug- induced deaths are a serious health concern in Norway. Overdoseprevention following discharge from multidisciplinary specialized treatment centers is lodged as one of the national patient safety program measures in Norway.

Aims: To measure documented application and implementation of the patient safety program in a detoxification and a treatment clinic at The Bergen Clinic Foundation.

Methods:  A mixed-methods study was designed to explore documented application and implementation of the four interventions of the patientsafety program.  In the quantitative study 880 patient safety checklists registered in a two year period were collected and analyzed with chi-2 test. In the qualitative study five employees were strategic selected to undertake semi-structured interviews regarding their experience with the patientsafety program and the implementation process.  The interviews were audio recorded, transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically.

Findings: The quantitative results show a 88 % response rate. The documented application of the four interventions varies between 63 % and 99 %.  There are gender and age differences in addition to differences between the detoxification and the treatment clinic. The qualitative results show the importance of top- management support, presence of adequate promoters and thorough information and training.
