Bråvalla Music festival : The estimated economic effect that a music festival might haveon a community in relation to the free rider phenomena (English)
Abstract [en]

This study was brought forward to highlight the estimated economic effect that a music festival might have on a community, but also the local businesses. To make this possible, we chose to approach the subject with both a survey and interviews. This allowed us to get a more holistic perspective, with both data from people visiting the festival and surrounding businesses. The survey-data collected from the consumers is meant to fill in gaps from the interviews and display the pattern of consumer expenditure. The phenomena named free rider will be brought up and defined, a major part of this study in which perspective we base the study on. With our research we want to show how the local business in a community stands in relation to the event and the term free rider. Our study shows that an event of this magnitude generates a great revenue to both state and businesses in the area. The tourist who visit the city is bound to spend money and businesses who benefit from this, though no involvement in organizing the event, is seen as a free rider in theory. An event creates great opportunities for a smaller city, not only with an economic injection but also as an opportunity to strengthen the local identity. The result of this study shows that all business, who took part in the interviews, benefits from the event Bråvalla Festival. Defined by theory, these businesses could be considered as free riders.
