Abstract [en]

The purpose of this report is to clarify whether the current control program of the coordinated recipient control of Ume and Vindel Rivers are following the quality elements for watercourses and its relation to the emissions from industries along the two rivers. To accomplish this, the program was compared with current legislation, the Environmental Protection Agency’s manuals to investigate if the program is following the quality elements for watercourses. The program is also compared with the emissions reported in the environmental reports from industries within the Ume and Vindel Rivers water conservation association, to determinate if the analyses within the program are related to these emissions. The results in this study show lack of analyses for the biological quality elements diatoms and fish. Analyses for metals were performed on unfiltered samples within the program, while the assessment criteria and limit values require filtered samples. Despite the lack of some basic data in the control program, the performed analyses can be used for expert assessment of environmental conditions of the rivers. However, I proposes a number of changes and additions to ensure comparable results. For example, the program is to a majority adapted to the industries within the Ume and Vindel Rivers water conservation association, but analysis of PFOA/PFOS should be added for monitoring emissions.
