Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

About 30 percent of Swedish high school students fail to complete their education within three years. Not completing their high school education can result in major consequences for the individual but also for the society. This thesis is a sociological study of a qualitative nature where eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with individuals who did not complete their high school studies. The purpose of the study is to contribute to a greater understanding of why high school students do not complete their education, how it can be prevented and how the individuals are affected by the drop out of school. As theoretical framework of reference, we have used school culture, stigma and empowerment. The results show that large classes, messy school environment and lack of support from school staff are reasons why the individuals who participated in our study, ended their education prematurely. They feel that people around them judge them, that they have lost much of their social life and that they feel socially isolated. They request a personalized education, smaller classes and more support for each individual student.
