Once upon a time... : A survey about how reading aloud at home effects story writing among children in school (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

In this survey I aim to find out if adults’ reading aloud at home to their children has an impact on children’s story writing in school. The survey is based on a questionnaire, interviews with six children, and the children’s written stories. I’ve made a deliberately choice when it comes to my informants. I’ve chosen children in the 4th grade to be a part of this survey because they are supposed to have come further with their story writing than children in the 3rd grade. The result of this survey is analyzed in relation to earlier research on the subject.

My survey shows that reading aloud at home has a big impact on children’s story writing in school. The children who participated in this survey and who had someone reading aloud to them at home, did write better stories containing lots of fantasy. The children who didn’t have anyone at home reading aloud to them wrote stories based on reality and their own experiences and reached lower grades.
