This study looked at language difficulties as a functional obstacle in the work place. The
purpose was to examine whether language problems were an obstacle (hindrance) in the
working place itself or a disability.
The study was carried out through interviews in Gothenburg, where both I and my
interviewees live and work.
My interviewees consisted of 8 individuals, 6 of them were of an immigrant background, with
working experience in Sweden. The other 2 were of Swedish background, one of whom was
an employer, the other a teacher.
I chose to interview both Swedish and immigrant interviewees, because it was important for
me to listen to differing groups with different perspectives.
I chose a qualitative study, this method enabled me to analyze the interviews. The result
shows that language, culture and other ethnic difficulties can have similar effects as functional
The obstacle with the person, but time is a factor throughout. To invest in immigrants can be
favorable, and establishing rules or actions for people with immigrant background means that
they can be integrated in society, contribute to the development of their own society, and
maintain psychological health which would improve life quality for them, especially those
who have benefitted from an education and thereby improve their competence within the workplace.
