The consequence of being mentally and physically strong : A study of masculinity norms impact on mental health problems and counselling (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Statistics show that the suicide rate amongst men is high and that men do not seek professional help in the same extent as women. Previous research suggests that the reason behind this may have to do with masculinity norms, expressing that men must be mentally and physically strong and have the ability to deal with problems on their own. The aim of this study is to investigate young men’s attitude to seek counselling for mental health problems and what impact they think masculinity norms has on the willingness to seek counselling.

Interviews with six young men show that our results are consistent with previous research in terms of the negative impact masculinity norms have on men’s general approach towards counselling. The young men’s attitude is however positive towards counselling. They suggested that counselling could be normalized through more information and expanded outreach strategies. Our conclusion is that men are positive towards counselling despite masculinity norms.
