Energy audit in the bleachery at Domsjö Fabriker AB (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this Master Thesis was to investigate the energy flows in the bleachery at Domsjö Fabriker AB and to create a calculation model that could be used in the future for energy audits. The main goal with this energy audit was to identify energy savings suggestions.

To investigate the energy flows data has been analyzed from different measuring devices in the bleachery. The measuring devices measured mass flows, temperatures and the amount of solids in the flows. Assumptions where done together with knowledgeable engineers at the factory when data was lacking. To validate the energy flows a balance of mass flows where done to ensure that no unknown filtrate had been income or outcome from the bleachery. When the energy flows where determined a deeper investigation was done for the steam flows to identify energy savings. It resulted in two suggestions: recycle the steam condensate to reduce the steam flows and to liquidate the adding of lye in three big pumps to save electric energy.  

The idea to recycle the steam condensate is to buy a heat exchanger that exchanges the steam condensate toward a flow with resin. Today the resin flow is heated with steam and the steam condensate leads to a drain. To determine if this was possible two cases where done. One case was when the pressure of the steam condensate was atmospheric and one case when the pressure was 7 bars. The result shows that this suggestion was possible for both cases. When the pressure was atmospheric extra steam needed to added but still the saving was around 200 000 SEK/year. When the condensate flow was 7 bars no extra steam needed and the savings was more than 485 000 SEK/year.

The idea to liquidate the adding of lye in three big pumps is instead to lead the mass flow past the pumps. Instead the lye will be added in an existing centrifugal pump (MC-pump). To ensure that enough mixing obtained a chemical mixer could be purchased. This suggestion would increase the steam flow but save a lot of electric energy. The saving would be at least 1,06 million SEK/year.

The conclusion would be that if Domsjö Fabriker decide to recycle the steam condensate and liquidate the pumps the saving would be 1,5 million SEK/year.
