Abstract [en]

In recent years a comprehensive digitization has been implemented in Swedish schools, and Sweden, according to the National Agency for Education (2015), is actually one of the countries participating in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) that has the most access to digital tools such as computers, tablets, interactive whiteboards etc in school. How this affects school activities is a question that many ask, and some researchers believe that digital technology can thoroughly transform learning and teaching. Can these tools perhaps help students who are struggling with reading and writing?

In this study I will examine how some students, whom teachers think are struggling with their reading and writing, use digital literacy aids in the subject of Swedish. I will also examine how teachers perceive their opportunities and obstacles regarding the use of digital tools in teaching children who are struggling with reading and writing. To answer this I prepared the following questions:

  1. What are the opportunities and obstacles experienced by teachers in the use of digital tools for teaching students who are struggling with reading and writing?
  2. How can a struggling student make use of the support/scaffolding that a high performing classmate and the iPad gives?

The study is based on a qualitative method with six interviews with teachers and two observations of students writing a detective story on the iPad. The theories this study is based on are emergent literacy, zone of proximal development and scaffolding.
