Gender roles in the game : a study in recreation center students' views on gender (English)
Abstract [en]

In this study we examine the students' own views of gender roles and how they are portrayed in the students games. The study aims to create a greater understanding of our work as recreation center teachers and give us an insight into the students' perspective. The methods we used are observation and interview and these are analyzed from a gender theoretical and social constructionist perspective.

In the study, we saw that the traditional gender patterns are portrayed in the games at the recreation center but that the students often not are aware of it. Students choose games and roles in the play that follows the given norms and beliefs. We could also see that the students were aware of the positions the educators put the students in and that girls and boys react differently to the realization of this. Where the boys reacted with jealousy and a sense of injustice the girls showed more of an understanding. We also saw the importance of the teacher's role and participation in the game as a tool for creating a better climate and prevent a division between the sexes.
