Abstract [en]

Social media has revolutionized how people communicate with eachother. It’s been used by a lot of people in the world and people sharing everything from pictures, videos and information. Personal information has become the new economic value, where authorities and companies can sell it to third party. The aim of the study has focused on how students perceive their own use with regard to privacy on social media and what they feel about privacy settings. To answer these questions data collection has been conducted through qualitative interviews where the participants explain how they use social media. The intreviews has been developed by three themes in this study and are presented as, thoughts on their own use, their relations to privacy settings and sharing standards. Furthermore the interviews has been analyzed and discussed. Accordingly to some of the students, they are aware when sharing personal information on social media, but they do not understand the consequences by sharing that information.

More importantly some of the participants are not aware of the privacy settings, its purpose or its function. With or without the privacy settings, information can still be collected. This is something the students does not seem to be aware of or concerned about. Furthermore students are both aware and unaware of the information they share, while claiming it is up to each individual to decide what is okay to post on social media and that they are concered about relinquish information.
